Admin news[edit]

Hello,

If you consent for statistics to be published about your actions as an administrator, please sign here: Commons:Administrator permission for statistics. (I expect that most people will not have a problem with it unless you are especially concerned with privacy.)

Also, please be aware that we now have a Commons:Administrators' noticeboard. Please put it on your watchlist, if you haven't already!

Re. Category Changes & Size[edit]

I notice you have changed the categories of images I have uploaded. I don't particulary mind, but could you give me some idea of the logic behind this? Thanks. User talk:W. L. Tarbert

Understood - thanks. W. L. Tarbert 17:48, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As you may have noticed I am not much of a photographer, but I have a few more images I intend to upload soon. I am concerned that the ones I have created so far seem to be quite large (>1Mb), but I can't see any obvious guidance. If you think this is a problem can you advise or direct me to a suitable Help page? Many thanks. W. L. Tarbert 21:23, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jeremy this is a very nice image worthy of COM:QI status but with the current horizon tilt I'd be inclined to decline the nomination, do you think you could fix Gnangarra 09:20, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reelfoot_Lake.jpg[edit]

I'm sorry for being so dry in my comments. Next time I'll watch my manners...

As for your picture I'm afraid the new scan didn't help much, see for yourself: Image:Reelfoot_Lake_detail.jpg. I think it is a good, "by the book" composition, but technically very poor by today standards. Should be a quite old (or spoiled)negative. Maybe a downsampling can minimize the flaws. Regards, - Alvesgaspar 21:41, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did you try to scan the paper copy, or it is too small? Alvesgaspar 22:51, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Album covers[edit]

Apparently Skurlik2120 (talk · contribs) uploaded a couple of album covers, one tagged as {{Attribution}} and the other without license. Do these qualify for speedy deletion as per {{Albumcover}}? Could you check them out (note that the artist site is in Japanese). Thanks! -- ReyBrujo 03:16, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dialetti italiani 1935[edit]

Dialetti italiani 1935

Jeremy, the map is from an italian elementary school book of 1935 and was done by Tagliavicini, an italian linguist who died in the late twenties. Anyway, In Italy all the map works are copyrighted by law for twenty years only (with the exception of the artistic photographic map works, that follow the 70 years rule of the EU). I have checked the commons legal section and I have found that this is what is written in "Commons:Licensing" about "Country-specific laws:Italy" : "Italy. In compliance to Italian copyright law term of copyright expires according to law of 22 April 1941 n. 633, revised by the law of 22 May 2004, n. 128 article 87 and article 92, all non artistic photographs enter the public domain after 20 years counted from the beginning of the following calendar year (ie. as of 2006, prior to the 1st of January, 1986) after they were first published, this rule is valid also for italian film's screenshot. Artistic photographs enter in the public domain after 70 years." There is no copyright in Italy for any map done before WWII. Sincerely, Bruno --Brunodambrosio 03:39, 26 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jeremy, the map has been made by a linguist who died in 1928, so I believe in this case should apply the rules of PD-old. I have read the discussion about PD-Italy and I wish to be allowed to stay out of all these "problems". I believe Wikipedia should be a "friendly" place without such a disturbing discussion.

Anyway, in the EU copyright law there is :"Duration of protection: The principal goal was to ensure that there was a single duration for copyright and related rights across the entire European Union. The chosen term was 70 years from the death of the author (post mortem auctoris, pma) for authors' rights (Art. 1)". I believe that the same rule should apply to Wikipedia. Sincerely, Bruno --Brunodambrosio 03:45, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Jeremy. I have modified the image information with your requests. I hope it is totally OK now. Sincerely Bruno.--Brunodambrosio 15:09, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK. I'll do it. Bruno--Brunodambrosio 03:54, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

question about funtimenews.com deletion[edit]

i am new to this and i don't understand why funtimenews.com was deleted - please explain if you have time - also what did i do wrong - is there another place for entering the page funtimenews.com ? - thank you very much for listening the preceding unsigned comment is by 67.82.230.97 (talk • contribs)

(replying here as IP may be dynamic)
I deleted your article because it was exactly that, an article. The Wikimedia Commons is a media repository, and does not host articles—see Commons:Project scope for more details. —JeremyA 23:59, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

'L' pictures[edit]

Thanks for uploading some of my L pix that I posted on Flickr! I have more L pix available and will post the best ones here too! LHOON 12:39, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, did you never experienced problems in taking pictures on the L? I remember being told by CTA staff at Ashland/63 that permission was needed. However, the picture was already safe and is on here now :-) LHOON 13:13, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you![edit]

Thank you for moving my Gallery to wherever it ought to have been before - I'm very new here and Wiki is not very user-friendly IMHO. Luckily we have people like you...

Kind regards

Hello Jeremy, the gallery was created 10 minutes before deletion. I think it is fair for a new user when he get a little more time to improve or finish his work. Do you don't think so, too? --GeorgHH 20:18, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Suspicious contributions[edit]

Hello there! While uploading some images, I noticed Jeo (talk · contribs) uploaded several watermarked images without really demonstrating they are free. The fact that he uploadead a poster at Image:Evan2a.jpg as free and that he was blocked for uploading without license tags makes me think an administrator should review his contributions. Hopefully you can do it (or contact someone else to do it). Thanks! -- ReyBrujo 21:45, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have already seen that you have deleted the steifer page. Could you please explain me why have you done that without looking on whatlinkshere page? Please fix the links (adding [[user:steifer|steifer]]) or leave a redirect there. Thanks, -- odder 11:39, 20 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

more[edit]

Yes, please delete Image:Blue angels chi 2004.jpg from the commons. It's not the best picture and when I get around to it, I'll upload a better one. Right now I'm trying to standardize names, resolution, and am busy moving my files from en.wikipedia to the commons. If you are an admin for the en.wikipedia site, there are plenty of my photos which have been moved that are waiting to be deleted. Thanks.

Jcrocker 20:22, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

more please...[edit]

Hey Jeremy,

Could you delete three more of my images from the commons for me. I took the time and went through the non-english wikis and replaced the images with the updated versions. Other admins are giving me much trouble.

The three that should be deleted are the following:

Image:Old north saint louis stl 2006.jpg

Image:Sears bldg jc01.jpg

Image:Aon building Chicago looking up.jpg

Goto my main user page on the commons to see what they were replaced with if you'd like: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Jcrocker

There is one more lingering on the Russian wiki... I'll deal with that later, ughhh too bad I can't speak Russian:

Category:Chicago Picasso[edit]

Hi, JeremyA Sorry that I removed your link to Modern sculptures. It was intended to give space in this category to sculptors who have contributed to the modernist movements and their works as well. Pablo Picasso is of course already listed, his works can be admired in his category and the media repectively. I made a link myself to COR-TEN-Steel with Pablo Picasso, but not with Chicago Picasso (no matter how much I do enjoy this sculpture).--Gerardus 07:56, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

JeremyA, I transformed and reorganised category Modern sculptures. All names of modern sculptors have gone now, space is now created for special Undercategories like: Chicago Picasso, which I have relinked already. Thanks to you ,I look different at it now. --Gerardus 12:08, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool Globes[edit]

Thanks so much for the spindle reference, that really helped me understand how to use fair use in this instance. I'm a part of the Chicago project and having been taking photos whenever I'm downtown to upload. I was wondering about photos of the "Great Lakes" sculpture outside of the Art Institute? It seems to me that would still be under copyright. Ah well, photos of buildings and parks are still fun.--I'm nonpartisan 01:12, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

usage of images on a website[edit]

Hello! - I have a question: I am gathering images of places around the world to be used as thumbnails/clues to find them on googlemaps. This belongs to a microsite done for a paying client, for whom we are building this online website/game. The images are quite small in size, and we are using (so far) public domain and free royalty images. There are a couple (specifically, Bale Street, Memphis) of images which I would like to use.. however, the license states that proper credit needs to be included. Since they are going to be small thumbnails, i would prefer not to include text on it.

Is it possible to use the images, or is it absolutely necessary to include the credit? Can I make a particular request for the usage of images? How does it work? // thankyou!

Marcoantoniomorales 15:23, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Marco Antonio August 1st.

Hi Marco, thanks for your inquiry. The images that I have uploaded here are only free to use if they are used within the terms of the creative commons licence that I have specified. If you wish to use them outside of the terms of that licence then we will need to negotiate royalties. Thanks —JeremyA 02:18, 2 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
