I don't understand pinging so I guess I'll ask questions here.

I can't find a Sormovich photo there on riverships.ru, but I can understand why. I was able to use a cyrillic translator, but the thing I'm looking for is a 1970s forgotten hovercraft. Where I have been to find it is DuckDuckGo, where I have found plenty of photos. I just don't know if they are copyright free because if I need to ask for permission, I can't. I am too young to have an E-mail to message them "Hey, can I use your photo for commercial use on Wikipedia?" I feel like this needs to happen. I specialize in making articles about forgotten things that have been overwritten in history, and this thing is too beautiful to be forgotten. KingAviationKid (talk) 12:45, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

@KingAviationKid: It does not always have to be via email, please see m:WP:FIR. There are also many free webmail services. If a parent, teacher, guidance counselor, or older friend can assist you in your search or provide access to an email address (that they can monitor for your safety), that can help too. See also mw:Extension:Echo#Usage.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:59, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but I don't really understand these things and I don't have time to understand them. I am gonna look for an Image and then ask for you to maybe message the author and tell me how to upload it. KingAviationKid (talk) 13:19, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
@KingAviationKid: Ok. It would help to know what grade and country you are in.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:25, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
USA and Grade 7. PS I am at least a year ahead of most kids. I have also found Two photos. I see one in Flickr that says all rights reserved and I see one here https://hague6185.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/hovercraft-e2809dsormoviche2809d.jpg. The latter has an author that I cannot copy and translate and I believe that he is deceased.
Which one should I choose? KingAviationKid (talk) 13:29, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
@KingAviationKid: Thanks. The one on wordpress.com, what page is it on? Do you have the URL for the one on Flickr?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:09, 29 July 2022 (UTC)

Just say when I can upload it on talk page I would prefer the wordpress photo its better quality KingAviationKid (talk) 14:51, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
@KingAviationKid: In which article or draft do you want to display such a photo?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:46, 29 July 2022 (UTC)
I am planning to make an article on the Sormovich once I find a good time to do so. KingAviationKid (talk) 18:28, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Hope you're well

Hey Jeff, I am appreciative of the thanks. What i've been doing since my block/ban from enwp is try to work effectively on Wiki commons, wikisource etc. and try to get into the good shoes of the admins and community. As a result, i've been doing some investigation to delete any false information files. Its a lot of fun and i think if I can do this, we can make Commons a better place. How are you though? --Nim Bhharathhan (talk) 14:54, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

@EurovisionNim: I'm glad you are better. Please read en:Template:Unblock.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:05, 1 August 2022 (UTC)

Question

Hi. Do you know if there is a way to have a new version of an image deleted without having to nominate the original image for deletion also? Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 03:34, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

In the upload history on the file description page there are "revert" links for the different versions. Revert to the older version and request "revision deletion" of the offending version. Read the linked page for the policy. –LPfi (talk) 09:15, 2 August 2022 (UTC)

File:Sam Fender MTV 2019 3.png

Hi Jeff G. Are you able to verify the license for File:Sam Fender MTV 2019 3.png? It's a MTV screenshot and there's a source url provided, but the video requires registering for an account in order to be seen. None of the videos on that particular MTV YT channel seem to be released under a Commons friendly license, which is making me wonder about the licensing of this file. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:47, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: Sorry, I can't. For me, that video shows as "Video unavailable" and "This video is private". I think the uploader could do with a final warning. What do you think?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 09:25, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
I don't know if a warning is needed, but I didn't look deep into the uploader's contributions. It would just be helpful to find someone (including the uploader) who could verify the file is licensed as claimed, but I'm not sure how that works with YT since I've never come across a private video like this before. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:21, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: I found some more information. http://web.archive.org/web/20200420063432/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CgBiZie_5k says "Content warning", "If the owner has given you access, sign in.", and "The author has restricted access to the video." http://web.archive.org/web/20191127154207/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CgBiZie_5k shows no free license. However, a CC-BY-2.0 license is archived here in Russian. If I can't view the video, I can't pass the review.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:51, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
Thank you for continuing to try and sort this out. One thing about the archived Russian MTV link you found: if you move your cursor above the video play progress bar and then slide your cursor along the bar, you can actually see the video that was uploaded. It looks like the screenshot comes from somewhere between the 2:00 and 2:20 time marks of the video, but I can't be for sure because it's a thumbnail image. I don't know if that helps you verify the file's licensing, but perhaps it's enough. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:11, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@Marchjuly: ✓ Done, that's enough, thanks.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:57, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

Question 2

Not quite sure how the Ping works so I'll ask here. I read the message you posted in my user talk and I apologize for any misunderstandings. I had named this account as NewsRadioKMAN as I noticed some of our station's Wikipedia pages were not current (KMAN/KXBZ/KACZ/KMKF/KBLS). I only had picked out this username to make sure that it was known it's coming from the right source, as I work for Manhattan Broadcasting Company (the owner of those stations).

I also received a message about not advertising in commons, and I did not intend to do that as I'm new to Wikipedia and am still trying to learn fully how to do things around here.

Do I need to change my username? If so I'm more than happy to submit a username change if required, and can provide proof that I work for Manhattan Broadcasting Company if needed.

I do apologize again for any inconveniences and any help is welcome! NewsRadioKMAN (talk) 18:28, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

@NewsRadioKMAN: Did you read this?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 18:52, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
Yes I did, I appreciate that. In terms of the two pages KMAN and KXBZ, how do I go about getting the COI alert at the top removed from them? I am editing them in an unbiased way as I'm just updating programming information and their logos.
Thanks again for the help so far I do appreciate it! StevenAtKMAN (talk) 19:43, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@StevenAtKMAN: Thanks for getting a new username. Please only edit their talk pages, per en:WP:COI.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:02, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
Okay thank you! StevenAtKMAN (talk) 20:05, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@StevenAtKMAN: You're welcome. We also like sources, etc. - see en:WP:42.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:19, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
I see, thank you very much! Real quick it appears that my home IP was blocked? I think I submitted my appeal correctly on my talk page however I did not leave my home IP cause I didn't want it out in public. I attempted to use the tool that was linked but it isn't working. If it helps the block reason was "for being a web host" however it's not. It's a new ISP in the area so maybe that has something to do with it? StevenAtKMAN (talk) 20:23, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@StevenAtKMAN: Can you tell if it was a local block on enwiki or here, vs. a global block?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:25, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
I believe it was only on enwiki? Here's the message "This IP address has been blocked from editing Wikipedia.
This does not affect your ability to read Wikipedia pages." StevenAtKMAN (talk) 20:27, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@StevenAtKMAN: Please see en:WP:UTRS.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 20:29, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
I attempted that before trying the template, however the UTRS tool spits out this error when I try to use it: "Uh-oh. UTRS has suffered an internal exception and can't continue to serve your request." StevenAtKMAN (talk) 20:32, 3 August 2022 (UTC)
@StevenAtKMAN: You could try to email utrs-admins@googlegroups.com with the full message. I've never needed to do that, so please let me know how it goes.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:02, 3 August 2022 (UTC)

re: You may be blocked soon

hello Jeff G. You have posted a notice that you may be blocked soon. You have reported that I am infringing the copyright in the images. Please note that I do not own the copyright of only 3 of the files I uploaded. And those logos have been deleted. And this happened more than 1 year ago. I am the copyright representative of other files I upload. I am the photographer of some of them. I am the designer of some of them. And so none of the files I uploaded have any copyright infringement. And after uploading some of those files, I contacted Wikimedia Commons and just told the photographers of those files and asked them to write an email to Wikimedia Commons. And I proved that the copyright of the logo was not violated by writing some emails with corporate email. If there is currently a problem, please support me in solving it. Because I have not violated the copyright of any file at this time. And I am the designer of the last uploaded files and I own the copyright. Thank you for your attention. Atakhanli (talk) 05:31, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

Hey Do I Have Permission To Upload

Hey it's me about those Sormovich photos again, Do I have permission to upload the wordpress file now since you most likely talked to him in the past 9 days? KingAviationKid (talk) 17:55, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

@KingAviationKid: The Wordpress photo is 'СВП "Сормович" (с) Архив В. И. Тихонова' or 'SVP "Sormovich" (c) Archive V. I. Tikhonova', is from englishrussia.com, and is in many other places too. I emailed contact@englishrussia.com, but I have not yet gotten a response. The Flickr photo is from https://www.rbth.com/history/334817-giant-soviet-hovercraft-sormovich , which got it from "Vladimir Voytenko/TASS". I am having nothing to do with the Russian News Agency TASS, as it is beholden to Putin, sorry.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:49, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Upload 14th century artwork

Hi Jeff G, can I upload this artwork of Minamoto no Yoritomo from the British Museum? It says copyright, but it's from the 14th century. - Artanisen (talk) 23:20, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

@Artanisen: If you have any exposure to British courts, or anything ruled by the British Crown, don't risk it.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:47, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

deleting a photo

Hello Jeff G I uploaded one of my photos here 2 years ago as a joke with my friends so that they could find my photo by searching my name on the Google. But now I want to delete it and I don't know how to work with the site. Can you please help me? Asal Maya (talk) 22:00, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

@Asal Maya: Hi, and welcome. Please see Commons:Deletion requests/File:مریم میاحی.jpg, now that you have made your intentions known.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:28, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Subjects regarding block-issue

@Jeff G.: Greetings. This is to address the issue from my talk page (final warning). The only thing I've done throughout the time was cropping them through CropTool. I've been cropping pictures with the inbuilt plugins offered for months now, and I've gone through hundreds of them for article edits in Wikipedia, and I've never personally uploaded copyright-violated images that I know is a copyright violation (barring from my early uploads). But since this is the case, then I sincerely apologize for doing so. I have definitely no intentions for such actions.

Since I have cropped a lot of images, I feared that there might be more than a few cropped images out there that are copyright violations. It might need some time for me to clear them out and request possible deletions permanently. A block on my account would severely hamper my editing works in Wikipedia. What should I do to prevent a block? How should I solve the issue with the hundreds of images I've cropped? Thanks in advance and for reminder in the warning. PenangLion (talk) 00:30, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

@PenangLion: Please just be more mindful of what you are cropping from. By the way, what do suffixes like "(3to4)" mean to you?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:05, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
@User:Jeff G. Thank you for the response. The suffixes represent the ratio of the size of the image (3to4 would be 3 in width and 4 in height). PenangLion (talk) 01:09, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
@PenangLion: Have you considered using Template:CSS image crop, available on some 76 projects?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:15, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G. I've never heard of it. I'll experiment with it. Thanks for the help. Cheers, PenangLion (talk) 03:26, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

File:Police Tents Mardi Gras After Party 2020.jpg

Hi again Jeff G. Would you also mind taking a look at File:Police Tents Mardi Gras After Party 2020.jpg? I can’t find a license on the Twitter account given as the source. It might be there somewhere, but I’m not seeing it. — Marchjuly (talk) 22:07, 16 August 2022 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: this one is more egregious, I tagged it as a copyvio.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 00:00, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Just confused

Hi @Jeff G.. I need your help on File:Ahan-Shetty snapped-promoting-Tadap-at-the-GM-Modular-store-3.jpg. I just reverted my license approval after reading the last VRTS response and some of your messages on some related threads. This is so much lengthy and I feel tired. How do we deal with this one? @Jeff G., not so far but looks something very interesting. Thanks for the link! ─ The Aafī (talk) 16:24, 15 August 2022 (UTC)
@Jeff G., Given all the discussions related to BG, I'd just add a failed license tag to the file page. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:27, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Bulk download tool

@Jeff G. are you aware of any tool that would let me do a bulk download of all my photos (or photos by user)? I asked before on one of the forums and it was a script driven tool, hoping for something automated for PC. thanks --Don (talk) 23:35, 21 August 2022 (UTC)

What to do with this?

Hello Jeff, noticed your userpage has been vandalized. Good idea to haved it protected. :-) BTW, what would you do with these images? Is it self-promotion, copyvio? I wouldn't have a clue. thanks. Lotje (talk) 11:02, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

The winning flag in the competition for the Kociewie flag

Sorry, I just answered a request by Swiãtopôłk at Graphic Lab/Illustration workshop. He wrote "copyright will not be a problem as it has been approved by official representatives of the local government" and I (possibly naively) trusted him (or her?). Sorry again, I'm usually cautious but errors could happen.--Carnby (talk) 18:50, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Trophies

I'm asking you for help. A commons user raised a problem about the Eurovision Song Contest trophy in Village pump/Copyright but received no answer.
