Seeking your counsel about images

Hello, you wrote on the Commons administrator talk page about possibly uploading images to Wikipedia instead of Wikimedia Commons. I tried clicking on pages of the rules but my head spins with terms like "non-free content", so I'm wondering how I can get images of people I write about in Wikipedia into the articles. I've run into this situation repeatedly: I write a wiki-bio article but there are no suitable images of the person on Commons; I've tried emailing some of the subjects and if they respond (most don't) they won't have photos of themselves, or if they do, it's practically impossible to track down the photographers for permissions purposes; there are images on the web and in YouTube videos, but even faithful derivatives are not allowed. So, what to do? I thank you in advance for any possible advice you might give me.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 11:52, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

@SuperTomwsulcerWIKI: Hi. Have you read en:Wikipedia:Finding images tutorial?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:42, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
No I hadn't seen this guide before, thanks. While I still don't understand terms like "non-free content" and "fair use rationale", what I get is that there are numerous hoops and hurdles to jump through, and that it is probably a huge waste of time to even try anything. It's just how it is.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 14:10, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
@Tomwsulcer: consider also reading the first several paragraphs of w:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-08-11/Dispatches. Эlcobbola talk 14:23, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
@Elcobbola: thanks for the link. I tried reading it -- sheesh -- it's complex -- maybe if I had an advanced law degree I might even begin to decipher it. What I'm coming down with is this: that my way of contributing is with my own smartphone camera, and it's okay to shoot buildings and landscapes, and people if I get their permission, also food, public sculptures, tourist sites, creatures in the woods, and such. Stuff from the Internet if its pre-1926. Pretty much that's it. I think I need a new hobby.--Tomwsulcer (talk) 14:42, 1 November 2021 (UTC)
@Tomwsulcer: It takes practice. At a high level, copyright attaches to every tangible man-made thing as long as it is original (meaning not a copy, owing its origin to its author, and having a "creative spark") and is not a useful article (like a chair, pencil, car, etc.). Considering only that will generally make your assessments about whether an image is a derivative correct. Note then, per the foregoing, that even "public sculptures" would be problematic (see COM:FOP). Also problematic is that a great many works from the 1800s are still under copyright, as copyright terms generally consider date of author death or date of publication, which are very different from date of mere creation. If you have an image you'd like to upload, you can always ask about its status Commons:Village pump/Copyright before you do so. Эlcobbola talk 14:57, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

File:Rkennedy02 (flopped).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hdepayns and MajorTom52

Hi Jeff, on reviweing wiki and google policy on images derived from google maps I have learnt that they are indeed copyright. Thank you for clarifying this and sorry for mistakenly re uploading the queens gate image. My account seems to have been blocked as a sockpuppet for User:Hdepayns. I know this user and on reading the blocking reasons on their talk page they have clearly been in violation of wikis policies. Could you please help me unblock my account? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MajorTom52 (talk • contribs) 17:56, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Thank you for signing correctly in this edit, but you need to do it with every post.
Commons does not accept CVs or personal histories per COM:NOT, you would need a Wikipedia article that satisfies en:WP:BIO or cs:WP:VL first.
Pizza is delicious, I like mine hand-tossed or Brooklyn style with extra cheese, chicken or ground beef, and bacon.

Unapproved derivative works

Just now noticed the mention in this discussion. Thanks anyway. As a matter of fact my imaage is a bad example because even though the modification was created and uploaded to some comedy site without my consent and (absent the attribution) in breach of the license, I uploaded it to the commons myself. Assuming that the fact that I published the original under CC implies that I can in turn use the derivative work under that license ;-) So as far as the commons are concerned, I retroactively "approved" the derivative work, I guess. Musée Annam is back

Could you please request a global lock 🔒 for this account? It's another Musée Annam sock. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 17:39, 12 November 2021 (UTC)

@Donald Trung: Reported in this edit. When will you pursue unblocking on Meta?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:09, 12 November 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for reporting. I am 100% (one-hundred percent) confident that if I would attempt to appeal that someone who hates me will just revoke talk page access, so by requesting an unblock I have everything to lose and nothing to gain, I only wanted this sock globally locked because he started yet another insult spree. It is kind of funny, I have been the only person defending his edits in many uphill battles which I have all won and have defended the good things he did, yet when he made a few edits I simply asked him for a source he started to relentlessly insult me, that is literally the only thing I did, ask him for a source to verify his claims as he believes himself to be an unquestionable authority.
I believe that collegiality and verifiableness should be deemed important, two (2) qualities he seems unwilling to acquire (or based on the LTA he has committed, likely unable to acquire as he has been informed about this many times). Again, thanks for reporting. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 00:22, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
@Donald Trung: I see. What would you consider putting in an unblock request there?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:53, 13 November 2021 (UTC)
I thought about requesting to be allowed to edit all non-stewart related pages, but then again I wouldn't be able to report global vandals.
Anyhow, usually Musée Annam doesn't really use the same sock in multiple Wikimedia websites, he specifically started doing it to insult me, which is odd, especially since all I ever do is add "Citation needed" to his unverified claims while others outright delete them, I just find it odd that he gets more enraged over "Citation needed" tags than the actual destruction of his work. But then again, there is a reason why he hasn't been able to keep any friends on-wiki or get any supporters, I genuinely believe that he could be a productive user if he would reform his ways, but after over a decade of the same incompetence that belief is being overshadowed by my distrust of him. He often gets accused of adding misinformation but he never spreads self-made hoaxes, unlike vandals that I consider worse. --Donald Trung 『徵國單』 (No Fake News 💬) (WikiProject Numismatics 💴) (Articles 📚) 21:32, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Thanks for the revert and explanation. I didn't see the {{Shortcut}} on the page, as it didn't occur to me it could be above the title and categories (and it is much more discrete than what I am used to). I now spent a lot of time searching for it (as I saw it in the wikitext) before I found it. –LPfi (talk) 10:38, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

The problem was I had no idea what shortcut lead there. I could of course have guessed about other text in the shortcut box, but as I assumed the text had to be just where I was staring, I didn't start thinking about such options. –LPfi (talk) 16:46, 16 November 2021 (UTC)

My problems in VPP

Hello @Jeff G.. Hope you're having a nice day.

I request to please please list all the problems in my recent VPP proposal, so that if all the problems you list is solved you would support the proposal.

I think this proposal is important because an admin needs to be conversant with the all policies, in order to become an admin. If we bifurcate the admin into two parts now the admin needs to be conversant of the policies of the part he's being therefore increasing the numbers of them therefore solving the commons backlog into 0. Suppose if there is 500 del sysops, the DR backlog will be a piece of cake. Please, help me to find the problems so that this proposal will be into action. Question

Do you think File:1946 Kurdistan et groupements Kurdes isolés.jpg belongs in the category Category:Old maps of Kurdistan? I think so. Do you think repeatedly and baselessly removing categories is vandalism or not? To me the answer is only common sense. GPinkerton (talk) 13:56, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

@GPinkerton Yes, but not "Maps of Kurdistan" because it is too old. It should also be in "Maps of Kurdish-inhabited regions" but not "Kurdish inhabited regions" because it is a map. Please read COM:OVERCAT.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:05, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
OK, so the idea is that This map does not represent neither "Kurdistan" nor "Kurdish inhabited regions" and Thus it should include only relevant categories: 1946 in Egypt (date, place), Kurdish nationalism (ideology). are groundless expressions of POV right? These ideas don't represent how categorizing works on Commons and edit warring to include these categories at the expense of any relating to the maps actual subject is disruptive right? Also, what should the category Category:Kurdish inhabited regions contain if not maps and other categories, as at present? GPinkerton (talk) 14:14, 17 November 2021 (UTC)

Warning IP vandals

Jeff, it does not make sense… Especially when they use a dynamic IP which is virtually sure thing in this case (in fact in vast majority of cases). --jdx Re: 04:46, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

@Jdx: Typical practice for dealing with anonymous vandals at en:WP:AIV has been to accept a full series of escalating vandalism warnings issued within a 24-hour period as justification for a vandalism block, and Twinkle's programming reflects that. I thought that was the standard here for COM:ANV.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:39, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
Well, according to our COM:BP Accounts and IP addresses used solely for severely disruptive purposes such as automated spamming, serious vandalism or harassment may also be blocked without prior warning. Also our policy does not require a vandal to be warned multiple times (I don't know what "multiple" means in case of WP:VAN, I didn't find a definition there), it only requires the user to be appropriately warned. Anyway, the point is that an IP vandal almost for sure will not read the warning message due to technical reasons, so warning such users is just waste of time. Let them vandalize a bit more and then just block them (or not if they stop). And yes, I know that there are commited IP vandals who actively watch their talk pages and immediately "respond" to any messages. --jdx Re: 13:37, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
@Jdx: Sadly, this community has not yet judged me fit to "just block them". :(   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:48, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
