Question

You have worked on the case of user TheRoyalMonarchy. Do you know why he was able to edit his discussion page (https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:TheRoyalMonarchy&action=history) after he was blocked indefinitely? Pierre cb (talk) 03:15, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

@Pierre cb: By default, blocking on wikis is complete except for the user's talk page, to allow them the courtesy of filing an unblock request. That user has abused such TPA (Talk Page Access), and should be reblocked to remove TPA (IMHO).   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 03:21, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks. Another question: I wonder how this user can be prevented from creating a new account to do the same thing? Pierre cb (talk) 03:38, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
@Pierre cb: You're welcome. If memory serves, there are cookies involved in block evasion technical countermeasures.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:13, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Help?

Sorry but I think you dont understand your role. This site is made by people and many need help.... maybe you can so domething more polite than only revert.... Thank you! --SurfAst (talk) 07:46, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

@SurfAst: I'm sorry, I was trying to be helpful and polite. I regularly help users at COM:HD and COM:VP. This edit was neither helpful nor polite? How many edits did it take for you to indicate exactly why you wanted Category:Montenuño - Proa deleted? First, you used an incomplete {{Delete}} tag. Then, you blanked the page. Neither of those actions was acceptable. Then, I woke up and it was gone.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 10:09, 2 May 2021 (UTC)

Seeking a second opinion

Hi Jeff G. Would you mind taking a look at this editor's uploads? I found one in which the claim of "own work" seems questionable at best. The photo can be found being used online prior to both it's upload date and the date given it is claimed to have been taken, and the EXIF data also doesn't match up as well; so, I tagged with npd. The other photos might be OK, but they span a period from 2003 to 2017 and are all being claimed as "own work". It's possible that the same person took all of these photos, but I'm not sure that person was the uploader. Since your an OTRS volunteer, I thought you'd be a good person to ask for a second opinion. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:38, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

@Marchjuly: The user appears to be a near-SPA, mainly interested in creating and illustrating articles on Archaeology & Anthropology related people associated with Oxford University and the University of East Anglia's Centre for African Art and Archaeology. I agree that they appear to be up to some funny business with the photo info and metadata. That should be enough doubt to tag all their photos.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:18, 6 May 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for taking a look at this. The SPA and possible COI issues are probably things that can be resolved over on Wikipedia; I was mainly concerned here about the images uploaded to Commons. The one I first tagged can be found online (in a lower res version) prior to it's upload to Commons; I think that one probably needs OTRS verification. I also just tagged two more that seem to be questionable per their EXIF data, but the other ones I wasn't too sure about because they don't pop-up in a Google image search and the EXIF data seems to match the file description. I saw that you've posted a message on their user talk, and I've also posted a bit more. Perhaps they will see these messages and further clarify where the images came from. This could just be a simple misunderstanding of COM:L. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:12, 6 May 2021 (UTC)

Pregunta

Question

Thanks for making me a license reviewer, and the question I have is, can I upload this logo if I remove the white background it has? https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/871/692/e4f.png, the image has a phono, if I remove it, can I upload it with the pd-text logo license?

A Favour

Hello Jeff G.

I am the guy who did this: Edit kind: User self-published a fraudulent coat of arms. Heraldic appropriation is not to be tolerated to maintain the integrity of Wikipedia. Tried removing the image but was blocked by the abuse filter, two times now. Please delete https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Imperial_Coat_of_Arms_of_the_Mughal_dynasty.png and remove its presence from the internet as much as possible. Comments: Thank you to whoever will be managing the situation! 70.50.120.178 17:31, 12 May 2021 (UTC).

At the time I was logged out of my account, so my IP shows. To answer your questions: What makes you so sure it is fraudulent? Where may we find the real thing? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 19:56, 12 May 2021 (UTC).

I know it is fraudulent as it is a slightly edited form of the Pahlavi Coat of Arms, as well, the Imperial Crown used in it is for the Imperial State of Iran (1925 to 1979), though in its proper form it is mainly red in colour, not green as it is in this edited form. The real thing is used in Wikipedia, here is its link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Imperial_Coat_of_Arms_of_Iran.svg. I hope that you can now see what I meant, I should have explained it more in retrospect, my apologies. I ask that when you do delete the fraudulent form you also remove any mention of my IP address on Wikipedia. It was my mistake as I thought I was logged-in at the time but I was not. If you want to still attribute those edits to me please put it under User:SRV2021. I am not really sure how to use most of Wikipedia so that explains my mess-ups, but when I saw how that file was so blatantly wrong I decided that I must fix it and I rushed into the whole ordeal way too fast. So to sum it all up: please delete "File:Imperial_Coat_of_Arms_of_the_Mughal_dynasty.png" and remove my IP address from the few places that it shows up in on here (either removing it from Wikipedia entirely or changing it to be attributed to User:SRV2021), lastly please delete this comment when all is done. I contacted User:HJ Mitchell to do this too, so if you do it before him please let him know to remove my comment from his talk-page as well. I will try to permanently leave my Wikipedia account now. Thank you for the help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by SRV2021 (talk • contribs) 18:35, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

LR permission request discussion invitation

Dear Jeff G.:

I'm sorry to bother you!

Hello, I'm BureibuNeko. I send the message to invite you to participate in a discussion about whether I can obtain LR permissions. I think the current vote is unfair, at least relatively. Therefore, if you can participate in this discussion, I will be grateful. ( Whether you support or oppose )

Sorry to bother you again !

In addition, I invite you because you have expressed your opinions on LR permission request page, so this is not canvassing! And thank you again!

Regards,

Regarding Deletion requests/File:Maria-Amalia-Revelo-Raventós Ministra-de-Turismo.jpg

Hi Jeff. Sorry, but I don't understand the logic of keeping open a (spurious) delete request from a user banned by the WMF. He is forbidden to edit, and he opened the request to annoy me because I blocked all his evasion attempts on es.wiki. The Casa Presidencial of Costa Rica publishes its content under a CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 license, as I stated when I uploaded the file. Therefore, the delete request does not make any sense. --LuchoCR (talk) 04:13, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

@LuchoCR: You are not allowed to nominate a DR subpage for deletion, or remove a delete tag when the DR subpage exists. Please just explain the situation in the DR subpage, and report the user to m:srg.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:17, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks for answering. I did report the IP, but it hasn't been blocked. Now, I don't think it makes any sense to keep pages created by vandals and users banned by the Foundation. I affirmed in the delete reason that he created it, and it was enough to see the reason for which he created the delete request to confirm it. In any case, I am notified that this is the process to follow for future incidents of this type. Thanks again. --LuchoCR (talk) 04:22, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
@LuchoCR: As a Bureaucrat on eswiki battling a WMF banned user, you should have some leeway; you could also explain at COM:AN and have an Admin here undo the damage. You might also want to apply for membership in the "Global rollbackers" group so you can use en:User:Writ_Keeper/Scripts/massRollback.js to full effect against prolific vandals.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:41, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
@LuchoCR: I think you are slightly mistaken, I see no "NC" on that page.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 04:45, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: Thanks for the advice and yes, I made a mistake transcribing the license here. My apologies. --LuchoCR (talk) 04:46, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
@LuchoCR: You're welcome, and I forgive you. Also, pinging one on one's own user talk page is overkill.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:09, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Oh well. I'm definitely stupid! :) --LuchoCR (talk) 05:30, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Re: reminder

Hi.
Thanks for solving it.
I guess you mean the caché? I was going to, but I was worried about messing it instead. Thanks. :)
--Lost in subtitles (talk) 07:29, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

@Lost in subtitles: You're welcome. You did not create the DR subpage Commons:Deletion requests/File:Bistas dani el rojo.jpg, you did not transclude that DR subpage in Commons:Deletion requests/2021/05/22, and you did not notify the uploader JulenPela.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 11:59, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Damn, I thought it was more authomathic there and that it wasn't generated by some mistake. :( Thanks!--Lost in subtitles (talk) 12:02, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
@Lost in subtitles: If you want automatic, you can click the "Nominate for deletion" link in the left sidebar, under the "tools" section, which does all of the work for you. If you don't see that "Nominate for deletion" link in the left sidebar, you can use the JavaScript method of enabling AjaxQuickDelete on Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets once and then refresh once.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 12:17, 22 May 2021 (UTC)
Ah, I guess that was what I was looking for. Thanks! If you don't mind, I'll copy the message later on my discussion page to have it at hand as a reminder. --Lost in subtitles (talk) 12:21, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

Deletion Request

Hi Jeff, I'm still unable to delete my photo from Wikimedia 😖. There's no nominate for deletion option. And I also deleted the pic from the draft that I had created. But the image file is still there. Ho3inyahel (talk) 14:53, 22 May 2021 (UTC)

response for "Reminder"

Greetings. I got the notice in my eMail with your comments (03:18, 22 May 2021) about my deletion request (actually, it was a request for a deletion discussion, as I didn't feel it was right to delete the image myself). I always appreciate notices about what I might be doing wrong, as it is never intentional, but still happens as I am a novice. First of all, I followed all the instructions I could find about how to start a deletion discussion. Then, after I got your note, I tried to figure out what I might have done wrong (you called it a "malformed deletion request") and I couldn't see the problem, so I wasn't able to do anything. I don't even know if you're going to get this note, but thanks anyway. I'm not going to pursue it, as it's not important enough to me to spend the time on it. Seauton (talk) 01:33, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

@Seauton: You appear to have decided not to: add a reason in the template; include the year, month, and day in the template in the proper format; create the subpage, transclude it, give due notice about it; or read Commons:Deletion requests/Listing a request manually. Surely, you must have noticed that en:Template:Ffd requires follow on steps like adding a reason, creating a subsection, and giving due notice per en:Wikipedia:Files for discussion.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:51, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
We also have automated tools. At COM:D, you can find info about tagging for Speedy deletion with the {{Copyvio}} tag (manual for 1 file), QuickDelete (semiautomatic tagging for speedy or standard deletion for 1 file), and Mass deletion request (manual tagging for standard deletion of a mass of files), which links to VisualFileChange AKA VFC (semiautomatic tagging and other operations for 1 or more files). All but the manual methods require JavaScript, and the semiautomatic tools work better when the user is logged in and has them enabled as gadgets, including custom settings, higher limits, saving of preferences, and custom tagging.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 08:58, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Greetings, again. I see now what you must have meant by "malformed deletion" request. You listed the specifics, noting that I failed to "add a reason in the template; include the year, month, and day in the template in the proper format; create the subpage, transclude it, give due notice about it". The problem (for me) is that I do remember doing all those things, according to the instructions I found. Obviously, I did something wrong so that these actions didn't follow through and get done correctly. I continue to learn about Wikipedia, and your attention helps me learn more. For now, I'll repeat what I said at the end of my last message: I'm not going to pursue it, as it's not important enough to me to spend the time on it. Until next time . . . 47.145.63.61 18:13, 25 May 2021 (UTC)

Hello Jeff G. Someone created the Category:Liquidators and I was wondering if a rename to Category:Chernobyl liquidators would be more appropriate. Though, I am not sure if and how to do this. Should this question be asked at the village pump maybe? As Vysotsky did not come back to me on that, I guess he doesn't know eighter. Could you take a look into this. Thank you ever so much. Grts. @ Jeff

There is no chapel of this name in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris, see Google search "chapelle du sacré-cœur cathédrale notre-dame"

Of the three photos that had been listed there, two showed en:Sacré-Cœur, Paris on en:Montmartre hill, and one showed a panorama, seen either from the hill or from a tower of the basilica.
