Deletion of Comments

Why do you feel it appropriate to delete/move my comments? There is supposed to be a discussion on deletions, isn't there? Is there some rule that I don't know about that only certain people are allowed to participate in discussions? Is there some reason why it is ok for someone like THOR to attack me, and I am not allowed to respond? You noted that there was some sort of violation in my comments. I am happy for you to let me know if there is some "violation", but the link you provided had no information of what this supposed violation was. Looks like you and Thor will get your wish and the template will be deleted (even though nobody has been able to prove the information false, "Jimbo said so" seems to be the only reason needed). That's fine. I don't really care anymore. I do care that I am not allowed to participate in discussions. Nut-meg 19:54, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

I moved your comments of 24 June 2007 (UTC) to your user talk page from Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Abeerh.jpg because the deletion discussion there was already over for a week. Note "Please do not make any edits to this archive" in the transclusion of {{Delh}} at the top of this edit. You made four edits to that archive, and I considered those edits to be violations of {{Delh}}, so I moved them out. Where/when do you feel that THOR attacked you? You may participate in deletion discussions before they conclude, not after. You have my permission to separate my comments above, but if you do so, please attribute the separate elements. Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 04:11, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

My discusion page

Hi I would like to see where it is writed that users can't clean there user pages actualy I don't understand why it is usefull too keep old warnings even more if the problems have been solved. Regards --Kimdime69 20:52, 30 June 2007 (UTC)

Do you really believe that the problem with Image:Comte de Vaublanc.JPG has been solved? It still lacks a source that can be believed.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 04:23, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Hi, as you can see in Image:Comte de Vaublanc.JPG i'm not the first uploader of this file, I've just changed the format of the picture and his orientation so for this problem you should contact User:Aymeric78 which is the uploader of the file. I've tried yet to explain him what to do but it seem quite dificult for him to understand the copyright policiy as it is for many young users. Regards --Kimdime69 14:59, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
He explained to me that this file is from is family archives witch must be true because he is a member of the family of this person but probably I can't put it by myself cause I'm not the owner, so if you can please wait some weeks before erase the file cause he is not a regular user of commons and wikipedia as you can see and probably will not see my message or yours before quit a long time. Regards --Kimdime69 15:11, 1 July 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, he has seen it and changed the source to "family archive".   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:25, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

I did not upload this image. It was User:Xgeorg. I just checked its license at Flickr some time ago. --Dodo 21:31, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

Yes, but you could have noticed that it was a photo of a recently-created statue, in violation of COM:FOP#USA.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:54, 1 July 2007 (UTC)

New IP on CU

Hi Jeff & thanks - blocked already as part of the Saddam/Osama issue rather than the Italian nazi one! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:22, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Hi Herby & you're welcome! Please stop by any time!  :)   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 07:26, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Jeff is there anything recent on the Kazzo series, if not this was done by Larry (at my request) when they occurred and IP blocks placed. This is a well known cross wiki vandal. If it's recent fine and let me know (I will customarily check the blog log for vandal accounts and follow them up - Books have no system so I got used to doing it there - I've checked a couple already today!) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:38, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
No, nothing recent that I could find, but there's still some history that could be scrubbed clean. What were the images anyway? You may email me, via Commons or outside via SpamMotel.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 10:00, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Mail --Herby talk thyme 11:04, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Can we update the case records with this info as well please? Would be a shame to lose it, thanks. 11:25, 2 July 2007 (UTC)
Yes, probably. But I haven't gotten Herby's email yet, so I just sent him one.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 11:58, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Should have had two mails from me by now to the address you mailed me from, cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:48, 2 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, I've been somewhat busy with RL. OK, I got 3 emails from Herby. The first was delayed over 4 hours at SpamMotel. The second, sent some 2 hours later, was delayed over 9 hours at SpamMotel. The third, sent some 14 minutes after that, was delayed over 10 hours at SpamMotel. Those three points suggest a very scary trend (as "you get what you pay for" rears its ugly head). In any case, I have replied via email using a return address at Herby's MSP (Mail Service Provider). The more info on this vandal we can muster and send to the ISPs of the various open systems it's abused, the better. IMHO. YMMV. HAND.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 03:20, 5 July 2007 (UTC)

Usurpation

No I can't. You need a bureaucrat for that. Not just a normal idiot like me. - Andre Engels 21:19, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Sorry, with reference to this edit, I meant that User:Helios89 probably could usurp User:Helios. I didn't mean to imply that you, User:Andre Engels, could make that happen. I regret any confusion.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 04:29, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

Please be more careful when tagging images for deletion

Speedy deletions

It is good that you watch over copyright infringements. But please be careful not to nominate images where there are doubt about their copyright for speedy deletion. Thanks. Bertilvidet 13:03, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Image_talk:PermanentRevolution.jpg

I have updated the Talk page and removed the tag. The image is my copyright, I have cleared stated the GNU license. --DuncanBCS 11:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

New York City Subway Maps

Please see the discussion of these maps at Commons:Undeletion requests/Current requests#Image:NYC subway simplified map 50pct-optimized.png.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 20:56, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Answer

Hey Jeff. The picture I have imported is not a copyright violation. It's only a this picture [1] that I translated, complying with the following permission: This image is copyrighted. The copyright holder has irrevocably released all rights to it, allowing it to be freely reproduced, distributed, transmitted, used, modified, built upon, or otherwise exploited in any way by anyone for any purpose, commercial or non-commercial, with or without attribution of the author.

Please don't delete it. I spent much time working on it, so I hope I won't have to do it again. Thank you for your understanding. --Jonathan71 13:18, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

I didn't delete Image:PlanMetroNY2.png, I only nominated it. Polarlys deleted it per this log.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 20:11, 9 July 2007 (UTC)

Speedily deleted image

How was that image a copyright violation? As the image was speedily deleted before I got your message, I have no idea what was wrong with it. If you do not respond, I will be re-uploading the image as it was used in a few pages and those pages are now broken. —Locke Coletc 04:06, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Image:NYC subway simplified map.png

Image:NYC subway simplified map.png was clearly not a copyvio. Thanks. --SPUI 14:17, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

see also here ++Lar: t/c 14:53, 10 July 2007 (UTC)
As I said at the deletion discussion, I like the idea of putting something together to put on the images (and I speculate SPUI won't do it) but I am not clear on what exactly you were suggesting... surely not my long exposition verbatim! If you have any hints, let me know and I'll see what I can do... thanks! ++Lar: t/c 19:42, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Your reasoning was sound. Why should it not be represented on the image description page or talk page, rather than being forgotten in Commons:Undeletion requests/Archive/2007-07?   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 19:49, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
OK, I'll try to boil it down. Terseness is not a strong suit of mine (dunno if you've noticed :) ) Anything else from that thread that you think merits mentioning? Thanks! ++Lar: t/c 19:53, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I don't see anything else that jumps out as needing inclusion, but then I also don't think you need to "boil it down". Copy/paste should do. And I may not have been as thorough as normal when extrapolating the 33 and 25 percent image file names, I was rushed at the time.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 20:19, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Well I was thinking at least maybe losing the "with me so far?" and "so if you disagree..." parts. :) And I'll try to find those images in SPUI's upload log or whatever if the obvious things to try don't work, no worries. ++Lar: t/c 20:35, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

Take a gander at this, Template:NYC Subway map (it's a template so the link can be fixed once the discussion moves) and tweak it, tell me why it's no good or whatever: Once it's good to go I will add it as a template to all the relevant images (I confess I have not yet found the 25 and 33 images... any idea who deleted them? ) Thanks! ++Lar: t/c 01:51, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

I edited it, comments? I can't say for sure that those 25 and 33 images ever existed, they may have to be made anew or just forgotten.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 10:36, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
Good edits, thanks! As for the "mystery images" I think I found them! see Image:NYC subway map.png, toward the bottom there are some clickable links (25% 33% and 50%) but those lead directly into the internal directory structure. I'm not sure that the images were actually separately uploaded... I think SPUI found a small quirk. Not sure what, if anything to do, I'd say probably just leave it be and not worry about it... thoughts? ++Lar: t/c 10:55, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome for the edits. Thanks for finding the "mystery images", sorry if I just assumed that since the 50 existed as a separate image, the 25 and 33 would too, and then compounded my error by not previewing and sending you on a wild goose chase. I'd say leave the links be, but consider deleting Image:NYC subway simplified map 50pct-optimized.png because it is a lower-resolution duplicate of Image:NYC subway simplified map.png.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs|Flickr review status nom) 11:08, 14 July 2007 (UTC)
I've a mind to delete it as you suggest, but I think SPUI had some technical reason for creating it... there has been trouble with thumbnaining really large images if I recall correctly. It's beyond my technical expertise. Perhaps I'll ask on the pump. ++Lar: t/c 12:43, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

BYU TV

I guess this wasn't for me, was it? But anyway, how can you advise that guy to license TV logo under CC or PD? Do you think that, say Ted Turner would do the same with en:Image:Cnn.svg? --Robek (talk|contribs) 20:53, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

No, it wasn't exactly "for you". I find requests for help in the oddest of places, and try to reply where I found them (or in the directly associated talk pages). Anyway, he expressed an intent to use that logo on Spanish Wikipedia, which I had already found does not accept non-free images, as a matter of policy decided in a vote there on 21 June 2006 and only reinforced by the WikiMedia Foundation Licensing Policy Resolution of 23 March 2007. I felt I had no choice but to make the suggestion, if I were to comment at all. It appears that BYU Television International's fundamental mission is adding to the faithful of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, widely known as the LDS Church or the Mormon Church, via television, internationally. Giving a little of their intellectual property in order to further their goal of evangelism on Spanish Wikipedia would not be inconsistent with the evangelical nature of the giving of their bandwidth, programming, and other goods and services. Note that he wrote "I have permission from the creators to use it" and "How do I upload it correctly and how can I use it on the Spanish language Wiki?", not "Should BYU Television International, a for-profit enterprise, let other for-profit enterpises and its critics steal its hard work in the form of it its intellectual property in the copyright of this image?".   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 21:31, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
I thought, it's customary to post replays on other users' talk pages, like I did on his User talk:Mhamilton624 I don't know much about evangelism of the Mormon Church but I know a foundation that gives bandwidth, programming, and other goods and services and at the same time keeps it's trademarks copyrighted, here's just one example Image:Commons-logo.svg ;) --Robek (talk|contribs) 00:01, 14 July 2007 (UTC)

Flickr

I found the Guinea pig image you were asking about from a search for completely free images (i.e. those who fit the explicit Flickr download instructions and prohibitions for Commons). I had trouble using the tool to upload the complete history of the image, but the license is correct. VanTucky 21:23, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. I assume you are writing about Image:2006 TN State Fair- Guinea Pig.jpg and my question about it on User talk:VanTucky#Image:2006 TN State Fair- Guinea Pig.jpg. I found the page 2006 TN State Fair: Guinea Pig on Flickr - Photo Sharing!, corrected the text (including the license) using flinfo, self-reviewed, and uploaded the original size image to Image:2006 TN State Fair- Guinea Pig.jpg.   — Jeff G. Flickr Images

After reading Wikipedia's rules for image uploading, I found a user, oldonliner, who provided the photos. The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.188.80.197 (talk • contribs) at 22:12, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

What photos?   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs|Flickr review status nom) 22:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC)
You want me to go through all 2,001 of oldonliner's photos, looking for one that you may have uploaded as a logged-in user? Are you serious?   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:49, 15 July 2007 (UTC)

The image was the correct copy right to upload, but the uploading procedure for anything other than ones own work has progressively gotten more difficult to understand. Anyway the quality of the photo was so bad that I desided to talk to another flicker member who had her images used by the national media. CNN picked up her images and all of them still had a tight copyright, but she agreed to register here and uploaded all new images for the page. You may delete Image:Angora Wild Fire.jpg at this time.

How r u doing, Jeff?

Please do not delete my picture "Colégio Santa Teresinha". I've studied there all my life and I won the pic from a sister (It's a catholic High School). If u want, u can cantact the webmaster. She's my friend and She'll talk about it. Well... that's it. I'm looking forward to ur answer.

The decision is not up to me, it is up to the community. Why is the pic so small?   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 10:11, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

  • I won't remove deletion request tags.
  • The original pic has a bigger size, but I reduced the size to put in the Commons and Colégio Santa Teresinha web site. Crespus2006 00:07, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
Please upload the original pic and put the Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.5 License at or near http://santateresinha.net/resultado/escola/institucional/1940.jpg on :CST: Colégio Santa Teresinha :: nossa escola além de ABC tem WWW. Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 10:14, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

Thanx for the PG-images...

...I have an additional question, I have scanned in an old (1912) PD book published by National Geographic. Would Commons want these images and if so, could you upload them? I scanned the copyright page as well as the text so it can be clearly proven that it's legally PD, have compressed the page scans into 3 archives. Thanx one way or the other. 68.39.174.238 00:02, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. Commons would probably want the photos and other artwork, WikiSource would probably want the text, and The Gutenberg Project and Textual Collections would probably want the entire set of images. You may email me to discuss this further.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 02:35, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
I can't, I don't have an Email addr. If you want (could?), they're on my websvr in compressed files untill sometime tomorrow in this manner:
  • /ng1of3.zip
  • /ng2of3.zip
  • /ng3of3.zip
Thanx! 68.39.174.238 05:23, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Why don't you have an email address? There are many available for free, and many more for a pittance.

Having your own e-mail address is considered an essential part of life in cyberspace and is required for almost everything other than viewing pages. Making online purchases, subscribing to paid content, posting in web logs or Internet forums, participating in Usenet newsgroups and many other tasks will require a valid e-mail address. Despite once being considered part of "geek culture", not having an e-mail address can seriously disadvantage a person. For this reason, many governments in modern countries are undertaking initiatives to give e-mail addresses to public servants and school children.[2]

The first file is 842.8 MB, the second is 854.2 MB, and the third is 738 MB. Together, they are is predicted to take many hours to download, I've been having some intermittent IP connectivity issues, and I have to sleep, travel, and work during some of those hours. Please hold off on deletion. Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 07:59, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
It's not a matter of deletion, but rather power, etc. here. Anyway, I'll leave them up for the benefit of Commons, et al. Also, I notice that comment about Emails has been removed from the current articel on the subject. 68.39.174.238 13:04, 23 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. The first three downloads were corrupt, so I'm doing one at a time now. If it helps, I'll only be attempting to start downloads between 09:30 and 19:30 UTC (05:30 and 15:30 EDT) thru Saturday this week, extending through the rest of the weekend, but then my schedule will get less predictable. Yes, that comment that "Having your own e-mail address is considered an essential part of life in cyberspace" was Original Research (or needs better sourcing), but I agree with it, and have given friends email addresses on my domains. And yes, power can be expensive and unreliable; thankfully, I have a UPS, a battery-backed laptop, a power-included lease, and a power supplier (PSE&G) that isn't too bad at keeping the power on most of the time.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:26, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

You have moved the contents of Category:Record labels to Category:Audio by brand on your's own initiative, and I think it's a glaring mistake.

I propose you to revert yourself your move, so I'd not speak about that publicly, and we'll save a lot of time. --Juiced lemon 17:46, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

To the contrary, I think "Record labels" is a US-English-centric term that is out of step with all of the other types of branding for audio, and that photos of labels of actual records should go in Category:Gramophone records and its subcat.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 18:04, 25 July 2007 (UTC)
I am not fixated on Category:Record labels, but your category name is much worse. I think that a “pure” English category name would be Label (brand), or something like that.
If you don't want to revert your move, open a new section in Commons:Categories for discussion, and we'll discuss about the best name for this subject. --Juiced lemon 18:38, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

--museo8bits 22:12, 26 July 2007 (UTC)

You were the one who added the copyvio tag, so you cannot just pass the blame to Polarlys. Why did you think the incidental use of a portion of a magazine page was a copyright violation? The image shows how a record could be bound into a printed magazine. The magazine was arranged to limit the exposure of the contents.
When valid images are deleted it causes extra work for others and if not detected it harms the Commons and Wikipedia. -- Swtpc6800 15:05, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
The entire contents of that magazine was copyrighted 1977, including the text on the ad, the text on the face of the FloppyRom, and the artistic work of embedding computer code on a plastic gramophone-type disc in a magazine, making it ineligible for the Public Domain under the US implementation of the Berne Convention for at least 50 years, or until 2027. Therefore, any publication of a photo of it before 2027 is a violation of its copyright.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 17:22, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

  • I untagged it as a {{Badname}} because it was not an exact duplicate and uploaded by two different people. However, something about the way the Commons handles Javascript differently than wikipedia make it not work. I have only seen it work on one user account on my computer, and nowhere else. It's very strange. --Digon3 talk 01:05, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
Thanks! Please see what I've done with collapsing generic navigation boxes on my English Wikipedia user page.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 03:05, 29 July 2007 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/Template:PolishPresidentCopyright

The community did not agree to close this request and to delete images. I am the comunity, tsca is the community and plenty of people against deletion - they are the community, too. Aren't they? Julo 17:27, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
