Photo requests[edit]

Hi, Jean! Do you do photo requests? WhisperToMe (talk) 11:18, 30 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As long as it's local to Redwood City area I can look into it. Jeanjung212 (talk) 18:15, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WhisperToMe (talk) 03:11, 10 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! For the post office category I think "Post offices in Redwood City, California" is the best title. WhisperToMe (talk) 17:18, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Are you interested in photographing elementary schools in Redwood City and/or places in other municipalities? WhisperToMe (talk) 17:36, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@WhisperToMe: I received quite a bit of negative attention from parents and security the last time I tried to take photos of schools. People are very paranoid sadly. I'm going to wait to take photos of schools until summer when the schools are empty and there is no one there. I can take photos at places between Redwood City and as far south as Sunnyvale/Cupertino as I am often in cities such as Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos on weekends. East Palo Alto is a fairly high-crime area so I won't go there to take photos. -Jeanjung212 (talk) 18:34, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's fine to wait until the summer! If you want I can post a list now but it just means you'll use it later. When I'm in the Houston area I prefer photographing schools on weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) as there are usually no children present. I guess in some ways there's an element of luck too, as I haven't faced much opposition when photographing public schools (there was a private school in which a guard turned me away even though I told him clearly I wanted to photograph the school sign and not the security gate). WhisperToMe (talk) 19:56, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@WhisperToMe: Are there other things in the meantime besides the schools? I'll be able to get around to the remaining libraries that you listed. -Jeanjung212 (talk) 14:29, 15 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I might add some libraries, post offices, and city halls in Santa Clara County if they haven't been added already. How's that?
WhisperToMe (talk) 10:05, 19 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greyscale PNG compression[edit]

Hello! When optimizing a greyscale PNG file's compression, please retain (or add/re-add) the gAMA chunk. In its absence, a known bug can cause scaled versions of an image to render either too dark or too light. (To see an example of the latter, compare the three uploads' thumbnails at File:FrankWild.png.) Thanks very much. —David Levy 04:12, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@David Levy: Bizarre, I didn't realize Wikipedia uses ImageMagick as an intermediary for images like PNG. Certainly adds a ton of chunk data and doesn't optimize the resulting image very much. I'll keep an eye out for this in the future and just re-add the gAMA chunk after compression/optimization. Thanks for pointing this out since I had missed it! --Jeanjung212 (talk) 14:31, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome!
Yeah, re-adding the gAMA chunk at the end (as needed) probably is the easiest solution. (If Windows is your OS, you might be familiar with TweakPNG, which I used in the instance mentioned above.)
Thanks again! —David Levy 04:29, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Please keep this issue in mind. I just noticed File:Richard Mansfield Jekyll.png minutes before today's featured article at the English Wikipedia appeared on the main page, with this file used as the accompanying image thumbnail (though I also switched to a JPEG version). Thanks again! —David Levy 00:14, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@David Levy: Sorry for any confusion, but the original uploader image that I optimized from did not have a gAMA chunk in it, so there was none to copy. Just to check for clarity, do you want me to add gAMA chunks into the files I optimize even if the original image didn't have a gAMA chunk? I can easily do that going forward if desired. --Jeanjung212 (talk) 13:54, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The confusion was entirely mine, as I overlooked the chunk's absence from the file originally uploaded. My apologies.
Yes, it would be very helpful if you could add a gAMA chunk to any greyscale PNG file lacking one (unless and until the bug is fixed).
Thanks very much! Sorry again for muddying the waters. —David Levy 21:49, 9 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Jeanjung212,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.
