First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

Hank Gans images question[edit]

Hi Jay... on Image:Kane Street Courtyard.jpg and the other Hank Gans images, you tagged them CC 3.0 unported for licensing, but his site seems to be tagged as copyright/all rights reserved accross it. Where did Gans release these images under CC licensing? I wasn't able to easily find a lot of the images you uploaded on his site, either, for the source URL. Thanks (love the one I highlighted, by the way). rootology (T) 16:24, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

These images aren't on his website. He took them for Wikipedia, and sent them to me, and I uploaded them on his behalf. Jayjg (talk) 01:51, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, no problem. You should probably tag them with that info just in case anyone comes along later to tag them as no license/source. His stuff is great. rootology (T) 01:56, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Images licensed only for Wikipedia are not permitted here (COM:L). Can we get an OTRS release stating that he freely licenses them for all purposes? —Giggy 01:56, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I said he "took them for Wikipedia", I didn't say they were "licensed only for Wikipedia". Jayjg (talk) 02:05, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photos[edit]

I hope that deleting my photos make you sleep better at night. Stupid.Ekarfi1313:25 Thursday 19th August 2010 (UTC)

They weren't your photos; that was the whole problem. They were photos you copied from other websites in violation of copyright laws, and falsely claimed as your own. Saving Wikipedia from copyright violations does make me sleep better at night. Jayjg (talk) 22:05, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Files you uploaded may be deleted[edit]

The files listed below, which you uploaded, have been tagged {{OTRS pending}} for more than 30 days. This tag indicates that an email setting out permission to use the file was sent to the OTRS team. Unfortunately, we cannot find any record that such an email has been received, and accordingly the file remains without permission. Unless the OTRS team receives evidence that permission has been granted within 15 days of today's date, the file will be deleted. If you have not sent the permission, please send it to "permissions-commons@wikimedia.org" now. Please quote the file name in your email. If you have, please leave a message at the OTRS noticeboard, quoting the file name, so that a volunteer can follow this up. Alternatively, you can contact an OTRS volunteer directly. Please note that this message is being left by an automated bot, whose operator is not an OTRS volunteer, therefore please do not send this information to me, as it will not save your images from deletion. Thanks for your time! Please help translate this message! HersfoldOTRSBot(talk/opt out) 01:49, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
