Jim,

I am not sure this is the correct place to comment. the talk button does not open a window to type so i am not sure this is correct.

The slide of the month is a article from Boy's life magazine was started by Mr. Ben Hunt, under the pseudonym Whittlin' Jim. It ran from the 1950's through the late 1990's. It was published on a monthly basis (mostly) until the mid 1970's when Mr. Hunt died. It was continued for some time by other folks at a less frequent interval. The article was a instruction / construction article on how to make a neckerchief slide, typically with a verbal explanation of the slide and information of making the slide. typically it also had a drawn graphical image of the slide, and perhaps detail views to help explain the shape or construction method. is was written for scouts and scouters to make these slides, for inspiration. That is what I was hoping to do here.

The Kit slides are purchased by Scouts to be carved into slides. The more modern ones are typically flat pieces of wood, carved in a flat relief style, like the boot and the bear and the fish. The older kits, like the eagle, and the Sioux Chief are from kits sold in the 70's when I was a Scout. All of these kits are a block of wood with a graphic silk screened on the face. Some have paints and a brush included. The block is carved away to make the slide. I and the finished slide is not the same as the original block. I am not sure these are copyrighted in the final states?

As far as the number of slides I have photographed, I have made or modified these. I still have most of them in my collection. I have been involved in Scouting in the USA for almost 50 years, and if one makes several a year, it is not long before one has several hundred hand made slides. I also was a Scoutmaster for some time, and am now involved in that troop as an assistant leader still. I make a slide for each scout when they reach their first class rank. It is a design of their choosing, typically we have 4-8 scouts per year earn First Class - that is 4-8 new slides per year, plus any I wish to make for myself. Since 2014, i have made 25 slide for the scouts of troop 396 in West Linn OR.

If you are questioning if I actually made the slides I claim to have made, I see no way to prove to you of that. If you think I have not taken these photos, I can not convince you of that either, but I assume you can verify the location of some of them, and track it back to my residence. (I did not realize my phone was attaching location data at first) One time I clicked on an image on the wiki and was shocked to find a map of my house attached. So I did start deleting that data before uploading them after that. I also believe that if you look for these images on the internet, you will not find most, and if you do, they should all be linked back to be or be linked back to the wiki after November of last year. Most of all the these are not posted anywhere else. John Reynolds from California has a website that as far as I know is the only other location with postings of some of these slides (not as many). On john's site, he clearly attributes them to me.

I am not sure how I can prove these are original work? As I stated earlier, I made or assembled almost all of these (other than the Purchased ones listed). I can tell you what they are made from. The Divers helmet is one of the oldest I have. it was made when I was 16 from a piece of mahogany my dad got me, because he said it was better wood for carving than the Pine I was trying. The rowing shell is maple, because the first try was bass, and it was too soft and broke about 70% through. The wooden knots are Bass. A great soft wood with very even grain and a wonderful wood to carve. The Triforce slide was the first time I used gold leaf (although this is a modern artificial gold leaf). The pineapple is a wooden egg, with a hole on the top and green Gimp or lanyard cord for the foliage. The Burrito is bass wood, with FEMO clay wrapped in foil. The eagle has a stick in it's feet, to provide a structural element. the first few i carved, the toes broke off because the thin toes are across the grain, and very susceptible to breaking off if bumped. The life ting is made from a wooden curtain ring sanded smooth on the sides, and with first aid tape and a bit of rope. Cherry pie is a single use jelly tin from restaurants, the pizza is a lid from an orange juice concentrate cardboard can. The Lantern top is a thread spool. The basketball net is hand tied as are the snowshoes. Fox hand carved bass wood. Butterfly 1/64th inch thick plywood for the wings, and horse hair for the antenna, on a wooden carved body. The lacrosse stick is hex brass rod for the handle, the hop is soldered wire, and the net is hand ties, just like the full size ones (per the internet instructions I found) The Cradleboard is 13/o Czeck seed beads and antique 4/o Italian beads sewn on leather, just like a full scale cradleboard. it was inspired by articles in Wispering Wind Magazine, which I made for my wife when my son was born.

The Prius, turtle and lacrosse stick were the three slides I made for scouts in the troop for last winters Court of Honor.

I am still not clear about copyright. If I post picture of a bike, that is a copyrighted machine, and therefor not allowed? But there are thousands of photos of bicycles on wiki commons - most with people riding them? Copyright would require the bike manufacturer to allow permission, unless the bike is unrecognizable?

I suppose in the end you will do what you are going to do. I do not know how to delete photos posted. I tried to remove a photo last fall and could not figure out how. It appeared to be impossible.

For your consideration, I request you keep as many as you can. I took the photos, I made the slides, and many of them I am the copyright holder, there is no other second or third party.

John
