Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Jason M. C., Han,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

Commons categories[edit]

Hi Jason M. C., Han, ran across some of your images from Vienna, Austria. And then, had a look at all your images. May I please ask you to change your categorization strategy a bit, there are IMHO some general flaws.

  • Category:Wikiversity is dedicated to images related to the Wiki project Wikiversity (logos, screenshots, wikiversity meetings, wikiversity courses, etc.), not for individual images of flowers, buildings, etc. If there was a project under the hood of Wikiversity to collect images on a certain topic, I recommend to create a hidden project / event category for that. See the subcategories of Category:Wikiversity to get an idea of the intended content.
I have now removed the Category:Wikiversity from your images.
  • Likely, Category:Impressionism is a category intended for a specific painting style, not for general impressions (whatever that is). I also have removed that category from your images.
  • Same with Category:Visualization.
  • Please try to add at least one specific category to each image. A specific category is something that is not obvious (like general high level categories like autumn, building, color), but sometimes only is known by you, the photographer: the location (a town, a street, a specific building, a park, a species, which kind of food). You didn't understand something quite well what 3more years I insisted on doing... Like, my major is education, which only wikiversity and volunteering can explain my daily or weekly collection for wikiversity's photograph-accumulation and possession non-profit sharing with many teachers and students locally or online. All my behavoirs are online for this dream. Meanwhile, as a piano bilingual teacher, I really created 12 more educational portals in Wikiversity. They need to sellect photos for musicality-inspiration and art creations. I submitted many photos regularly, from which i chose good ones into those wikiversity portals for online and local use. Therefore, I used this category 'wikiversity' mainly for each pictures are very reasonable. Meanwhile, my photograph and music represented a creative style called Impressionism and visualization, which weren't only in painting but life and philosophy...Therefore, I am very sorry to hear your operation. It's commons' artist dream and life fashion, not what your mentioned... However, your words I will think. But before making responding, please better not directly change, it will be hard for others... Jason M. C., Han (talk) 07:20, 29 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, You need to think a case: I used to use SAMSUNG smartphone, mainly for making my daily or travelling photography, which cannot provide the information of geographic locations. Then, many years got pass that one day - just earlier in this year (around February to March), so lucky that I can have a chance changing my phone to Vivo smartphone... Currently, you can find that location information were added. Depending on my situation (No one but my small family supporting me to change my technology), that's already great that location information can be provided... Now, you critiqued my past photos made by smart-phone without the function of geographic information. Do you think it's relevant? If so, many other common people's phones without geographical information, like my past one, can also not be used... How a pity it would be... ! In conclusion, please try to understand my case from both a daily & active piano teacher in Wikiversity (such as educational privacy), and also a common people in Wikimedia Commons, I didn't want to find troubles to others and also myself and my family, meanwhile, if possible, absolutely, I would like to use new technologies... but it's depending on my conditions somehow I cannot totally control... Regarding with many pictures, I did think for long time then submitting... Okay, try to make a consideration, and I also would think of your words...Jason M. C., Han (talk) 06:56, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jason M. C., Han, I try to understand your concerns. Please try to understand mine. When I say that the location is missing, it is not necessarily about coordinates and geolocation, but simply about adding the right and most narrow category for the town, the village, the place, etc. I know it is difficult after some years. It was not about technology. Each category has a purpose transcending the mere name, often this is not described correctly. But Category:Impressionism is. Category:Visualization is about data visualization. And Category:Wikiversity is dedicated to the project Wikiversity. Not for images intended to be used or actually being used in Wikiversity (this definition would be by far too wide). I had a look at some of your Wikiversity contribs, mainly v:Portal:Aesthetics from Vienna School (Musicality) and v:Portal:Piano-kids' Corner from classroom and virtually online, can you think of project specific categories for the images used in these pages? I can try to add them for you, but first I need a sound proposal. regards --Herzi Pinki (talk) 06:43, 4 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Responding: 1. Herzi, you still didn't understand Educational Privacy and Protection, which Wikiversity (if online as a virtual college or university or educational community) should achieve. This point is in my major. Firstly, you shouldn't push out my picture 'Mountain series in management' and use the language 'object type quarry?, location?' (Especially your language)without any understandings! You can see the hill, green trees... were hurt very much, but many years there were no one pay the responsibilities! 'Quarry?!' Did I really want to quarry with some people? If you are a teacher who would like to teach students what are right - 'Eco-friendly'? Then, directly behind your residential place, everyday, your family members (in and out) need to face a situation like in this picture, would you feel happy? How could you find good sample to teach your students? Could you feel be hurt!? Therefore, I put it into a Live Educational Case-study with Wikimedia Commons' technologies and conditions. It was moving and developing in time, if every better changes happened, I all updated new picture in this 'growing tree'. During this procedure, I need to keep myself and my family members' safety, meanwhile, push out this fact & problem? It, if being seen, must make some managers and organizers not happy, how can I provide the real information of evenly its real name and the names of 'the town, the village, the place...' This operation was from 'Educational Privacy' and also culture I had learnt and discussed many years. I can only give the category 'Wikiversity', as it's Wikiversity's Case-study and observation, and as Wikiversity's belonging and possession. From Psychology and education to say (I have this researching and learning background), most readers' first impression after watching its category-Wikiversity (not as your statement)is: this picture is a thing used in the real Wikiversity, or this picture is from a project in Wikiversity. In addition, in the description of this picture, I have already give enough information I can give. Something I cannot give, I didn't give. That's my rights, as a common people and also a teacher... All in all, from language you have written below 'object type quarry?, location?', I cannot see any constructive meanings , but something like 'laughing at...' Based on above, I think 'Category: Wikiversity' should be kept.

2. 'But Category:Impressionism is. Category:Visualization is about data visualization.' This sentence wasn't correct. My researching fields including 'Impressionism in music'. Impressionism is a movement and philosophy, not only in painting, but also music, photography and life fashion... Now, it comes to Post-impressionism. Meanwhile, my postgraduate fields also included a field called 'Visualization'. It's not only a data-analysis way, but one approach of art-creation and education... Therefore, some photographs which can represent two approaches of art creation, I did all title them as Impressionism or Visualization, including music. From Psychology and Education to say: readers, in their first time watching those pictures or sound files, they will think - those files have a style or fashion called Impressionism or Visualization, rather than your statements. That's a philosophy in photograph, rather than only several simple impressions... In Wikiversity, I did also have an Educational portal about Impressionism and Visualization in life style... which has been pushed onto Wikiversity News (with many other experts and teachers...)

3. Wikiversity has its own inductive and deductive working ways for many years (from I joined, it's 3 - 4 years). One of my real Wikiversity friend push some well-built portals of mine onto News in this year 2019, which made my small family very happy... Their good expressions can be felt directly from their languages, not like... and I really not only have two portals but 12 more... and projects and languages, translations in it. They were also from my own daily educational accumulations - such as my postgraduate university, and the supports from some global educational platforms, such as British Council, Future Learn, Open University... I used those materials here created by my own hands to take my courses or teachings on them... Therefore, I think it's not necessary to break those well-running recycling systems.

4. It's another aspect in the real life that 'really about technology' (especially the conditions of Mobile phone and its camera) it is very important for 'Location-identification' and photo-makers' mind-clarification (in the first glance), which depends on objective and 'hands-holding' conditions. If can, already given... (I really attempted to provide objective and subjective information I can give, depending on my training and educational background...) We all hope technology can make life and art-creations of commons simple rather than difficult...

5. Herzi, please... this case has already wasted me much time and energy to deal with (Association should also be for making things simple and freely, giving others helps, and making things better, rather than making out some disorders...). It didn't make people happy, and I am very busy with many issues... It's not constructive... You have your matters to do something, but I did also have my educational & reasonable responsibilities and rights (long time, insisted on)... That's quite right, sorry... Jason M. C., Han (talk) 15:14, 4 July 2019 (UTC) Jason M. C., Han (talk) 01:26, 5 July 2019 (UTC) Jason M. C., Han (talk) 01:48, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Jason. You have uploaded some good photos. Would you like more people to be able to use them? It is difficult to find your photos because of the lack of specific categories. This is not a request for private information. In many cases, the name of the most important category is mentioned in the title or description already. But many people start by finding the category, and if your image is not in the category, then they will not find your image. For example, I have added Category:Mixed vegetables to one of your photos. That should make it easier for people to find it. Please feel free to add these obvious categories when you upload images. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:03, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Responding: Thanks,WhatamIdoing . It is a constructive suggestion... I will think more, regarding with adding photos' categories...Jason M. C., Han (talk) 10:31, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Dear Jason M. C., Han,

To place an image in a category, you don't need to modify the category. You just need to add [[Category:Example]] in the source of your image. Like this. But not like that.

Category (2)[edit]

Thanks for your contribution. I would like to remind you again that COM:OVERCAT is a violation of commons rules: when categorizing your files: generally, the category you put for the file uploaded should answer the question "what, where and when", and "always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those". Thanks for you understanding. MNXANL (talk) 16:02, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Responding: Here are many discussions and arguments can make, especially about 'Overcat'- its own definition, which has problems. I thought you made an absolutism about this problem. Every main category must have its sub-category. In the world, no one can say they 'always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those'... especially to the commons people... Even, the questions ' what, where and when ' also have many 'sub-categories' and elements and their higher deductive one... 'What- maybe two or more equal-value things are under, and for higher composition; where maybe after traveling to many places-can get, and when maybe in two or more time-periods- just realize in another'. Meanwhile, different peoples also have their own minds, how can you unify them in an absolute way? Indeed, in making my own works, I have already made a thinking of its categories included and what most likely things they were for... Maybe my view is wide, but it's not my faults, but knowledges regarding with it in my educational background is wide... No one can say something is only for one exact meaning 'to be', without some higher or lower or relative ones... My suggestion to you is: Don't play this absolutism game, even some unsure thing (category),you, yourself, didn't sure what the 'most specific categories' are and for ... In the world, there are no ' the most' but 'more likely'...Yes, you can give some helps to make things clearer, and you can also do your own businesses, but that's not the limitations to people's creations and freedom, especially someone have already thought this question.... 'Choosing category'- this problem is only depending common people's own mind, their life impressions and experiences ... different lives, countries and values of life and world, and knowledge ... If in your judgements to make only 'the most', many categories may don't appear, and the world will lose many interesting colours... That isn't for commons... Therefore, I heard your opinion, but I didn't think it's right... 'To be constructive...Be careful to treat others like that-giving many limitations to commons' innovation and creative publishes...Thanks! Jason M. C., Han (talk) 02:13, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

COM:PS clearly points out that the files on Wikimedia Commons should be "educational", which makes the most significant difference from other photo-sharing platforms like Flickr and Instagram. Commons do appreciate users upload files that are "beautiful and meaningful" in terms of their formal qualities, but please provide titles, descriptions, and categories that are practical, "educational", easy to identify and understand for the files uploaded. COM:C states that categories are the "primary way to organize and find files on the Commons" and the categories given to a file "would be enough to guess the subject". If you don't know how to categorize, see here for more information. Thank you for following Commons rules. MNXANL (talk) 16:42, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Responding: Thanks, yes… That's constructive...I understood this point-To be practical in education. That's why I usually added very detailed structurized aspects, composes, elements, and purposes...of categories under... and also titles, captains and descriptions following... I am always willing to follow the clearly and practical rules. But you know... adding it sometimes depends on people's knowledge background in life... which varies quite differently. I would try to think it in much careful way... Jason M. C., Han (talk) 02:15, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Jason's Presentation of Mozart in Dalian Library (Local) - Series 4th.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

File:Pachelbel's Canon in Pop Variations (Geoge Winston Notation) Player Jason, Han.ogg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
