First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: correct name
 • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote.

If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Thank you for your understanding.  Herby talk thyme 18:20, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JackPotte!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hello. Thank you for uploading Image:Dictionnaireprov00honnuoft.djvu, however the license that you have uploaded it under has been deprecated. Please could you select a new free license that describes the rights of the image correctly? If you are not able to do this, the image will be deleted in 7 days.

For more information on licenses that can be used on Wikimedia Commons, please see Commons:Licensing. If you have any questions, please ask at the village pump. Thank you for your patience and consideration. This is an automatic message by Nikbot.--Filnik 23:02, 18 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Fr-soucoupe.ogg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Pay attention to copyright
File:France.fr.JPG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Merci d'avance,

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you.—레비Revi 16:28, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

JackBot blocked[edit]

Dear JackPotte. I just blocked User:JackBot as it is uploading files without license and fair-use material that cannot be stored on commons. Please check all recent bot uploads. Thank you. --Krd 19:19, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Krd, did you please read this message which was left on every wikis in June?
It was the origin of my bot job, because we don't have neither the tools nor the people to check all these files legality like here. And that's why Pywikibot added Category:Files moved from fr.wikibooks to Commons requiring review into them. JackPotte (talk) 19:26, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If I get it right, the mentioned note is about disabling local uploads, not about transferring mislicensed files to commons. Please point to some bot approval other other concensus discussion at Commons or stop your transfers until such concensus is achieved.
Also, please recheck all your uploads to avoid them getting deleted soon. Thank you. --Krd 19:34, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PS: Transferring files that are obviously mislicensed and must be deleted in any case, and so causing a lot of unnecessary human work, is not at all acceptable. --Krd 19:36, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you're right these files shouldn't be on Wikibooks too. I'll try to recheck them but it's not my profession so I may not have them finished this week-end. JackPotte (talk) 19:39, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I checked, none of them, not a single one, has a correct license. I can offer you to mass delete them, if you agree. --Krd 19:44, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Krd, if the bot CommonsDelinker can clean fr.wikibooks I agree with you. JackPotte (talk) 19:45, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going ahead accordingly. Thank you.
If you need assistance getting images bot-deleted and unlinked at fr.wikibooks, please let me know, maybe I have the appropriate resources to help. --Krd 19:54, 5 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
PS: I don't know at all what other possibility we could have, like pasting the Wikibooks license on all these images. Actually I've never treated Category:Files moved to Commons requiring review before, and even if it seems to take at least a few weeks, I trust you if you decide to remove all today. File:Métabolisme-Image072constituants.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Commonstransfers again[edit]

Dear JackPotte. Sorry if I'm getting on your nerves a bit. Yesterday we talked about not to transfer files to Commons that have invalid licenses, today we have to address transfer of files that are probably out of project scope at commons due to low quality. Could you please explain why these files have to be moved from frwikibooks to Commons although likely nobody else will be going to use them? Please advise. Thank you. --Krd 18:37, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You do a great job and thank you for that.
These uploads are just because the poor quality is something very relative, and I didn't even think about it for File:Métabolisme-Image116constituants.gif which doesn't have an exact equivalent here as far as I can see.
And the message I mentioned yesterday, which had been posted on every wikis, says that special:upload will be reserved only to the admin soon (except on Commons obviously). Apparently we will be responsible for our own fair uses, but what could be brought here should be brought according to it. JackPotte (talk) 18:41, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that disabling local uploads to frwikibooks is a good idea, anyway that does under no circumstances mean that all files that are already laying around at frwikibooks must or shall be moved to commons. Existing files shall only be moved _after_ individual review, and problems with local files shall be resolved locally or _after_ gaining concensus with the Commons community. --Krd 18:51, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would like to import the 200 remaining images from fr.wikibooks to finish the review here together.
And after if you think that it's possible, those from fr.wikiversity. JackPotte (talk) 18:55, 6 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
At fr.wikiversity I hardly see any file that can stay at commons. Additionally, for a _review_ you would need to keep the original file online so that the reviewer can judge if the uploader at fr.wiki... likely was the creator or only the uploader. Having the source file deleted there is no real review possible.
Again, I'd prefer to have this discussed _before_ any action and not with myself but with the Commons community. I appreciate that you take care of the problem, but I don't see a need to hurry which causes even larger problems. --Krd 06:11, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now I understand how much these _unfollowed files_ could be a real problem here. JackPotte (talk) 06:49, 7 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello JackPotte/Archives2008-2014, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:Wiktionnaire-UL.png

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
 • use in any work, regardless of content
 • creation of derivative works
 • commercial use
 • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Yours sincerely, JurgenNL (talk) 08:59, 15 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't run a bot without flag on your main account![edit]

Hello JackPotte! I noticed the bot-edits via your account dated 7/19/14. Please don't run a bot without a flag here! Regarding your blocked bot account: Why don't you explain that Com:BRFA? That way the whole mess is contained on one page and we can go from there. Thanks for all your work! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:56, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I agree with you but my bot is currently blocked and as it concerned a small amount of pages an admin invited me to proceed with my account. JackPotte (talk) 09:08, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
JackPotte, although I asked twice, see above, I'm still missing the answer why these images must be transferred to Commons and cause other people's work an having them deleted at the worst, instead of keeping them where they are. Please advise. Thank you. --Krd 10:37, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I thought I had answered to you: according to the post we've received, because here are the templates and people.
So I'm not asking you to do my job of poor quality judgment, just organizing it better as it was asked by some others (and even better since I've stopped to import any unlicensed file here when you told me to, but the bot is still indefinitely blocked). JackPotte (talk) 10:42, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We still have the situation that nobody here can reproduce if the 2005 uploader who just said "GNU FDL" is the creator or only the uploader.
Example: File:Arrosage bois mort.jpg. Who is the photographer?
Example: File:Jap paysage.png. Is it protected? Who is the copyright holder?
Old files shall not be moved unless all problems can be resolved _within today's standards_, or, besides creating unnecessary work, you risk to lose them at both sides. --Krd 11:03, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done The first file contains in French the mention that the uploader was the photographer, and that the landscape was in France, so I could categorize it easily.
The second one has been created by the uploader (as he told) with Inkscape, so I could treat it too as anyone else.
Now as I told I've just got 200 similar remaining licensed images from the French Wikibooks and 200 from the French Wikiversity to import here, in order to finish the one shot migration which will allow Special:UploadWizard to preserve us from these maintenance tasks in the future. And for now that's precisely the maintenance for which Commons is dedicated. JackPotte (talk) 11:16, 20 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

And also:

Hi JackPotte. Some of your uploads are listed in Category:Pages using Information template with incorrect parameter. Could you please have a look and try to fix the syntax errors? Thank you. Leyo 22:20, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OK. JackPotte (talk) 22:24, 1 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Information brute.jpg.

Thank you.

Wikibook metabolism images[edit]

Bonjour,

Faut-il restaurer ces images ? Ce n'est pas très pour moi si c'était une demande pour une restauration temporaire ou permanente ? Cordialement, Yann (talk) 05:27, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

JackPotte (talk) 14:27, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Yann: resterait juste celle-là File:Métabolisme-Image072constituants.gif pour nettoyer b:fr:Catégorie:Pages avec des liens de fichiers brisés stp. JackPotte (talk) 14:33, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome, Dear Patroller![edit]

Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi JackPotte,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons. --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:29, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Danke schön, I've just tested and it's working perfectly. JackPotte (talk) 12:30, 26 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

discussion[edit]

Excuse my english, I'm french (and you, also, I think).

Don't be afraid : I'm just K800i without his nickname.

Bien reçu. JackPotte (talk) 10:49, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!
