First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

Your DRs[edit]

Hi, you entered a lot of DRs to images of Icelandic people i.e. File:Brynjólfur Bjarnason.jpg. The DR page for them is not existing. Second these are Images of people. That has nothing to do with Freedom of panorama. If you are the opinion that all these Images are not free, you should perhaps open an DR on the Template first and not to all images using it. OK. You forgot to include the DR into the day's page. I did it now see here. Otherwise the DR will never get discussed or decided because nobody realising it. In the most of the file the DR-Template is still in with an incorrect (red) DR-Page. I.e. here. Could you pls. correct the link or remove the DR-Request outof the files. I know its a lot of work but it should be properly handeled. PS: I don't know of the details of the icelandic laws. PD-IcelandAlthing deletions[edit]

Hi Jabbi,
I have deleted out of your mass-DR Commons:Deletion requests/Template:PD-IcelandAlthingProfilePictures all images that are likely not PD. However, the remaining few seem to be so old, that they should be PD-old as per general standards. For example, an image of somebody who died in 1912, such as File:Bjorn Jonsson.jpg, should be PD. However, as all links to Iceland copyright law in your DR are dead, I'm not sure whether the general PD-old terms are also true in Iceland. Hi,

{{Duplicate}} should be used for exact (or scaled down) duplicates only. If two images are not exactly the same, that does not mean we need to keep both, but the community should discuss the two and decide which is better: In other words send it to a full deletion request.

Value judgements such as "this version is better than that version" are not something that speedy deletion - such as via {{Duplicate}} - is designed to handle.--Nilfanion (talk) 19:37, 26 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Jabbi. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Jabbi~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.

Template:ICE-nonartisticphoto[edit]

Please note that I have modified this template. Notably I removed the Creative Commons 4.0 license tag because there is no legal basis for it. The Icelandic copyright act does not mention it, it does require an existing copyright to be granted and it is never automatically applied but needs to be granted by the copyright holder.
