Dupes[edit]

Your delete request is done. Whenever you have one, tag it and let me know because the dupes category has thousands of images in it and the dupes tool starts at the beginning of the alphabet, so the zebras will likely be in there awhile. RlevseTalk 09:59, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help[edit]

I'm sorry about this unfortunate mistake. Thanks for fixing it. Please accept my apologies and assume good faith in your edit summaries in the future if you will. Thanks, Poeticbent talk 18:08, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Norfolk and Western 611.jpg[edit]

I this a composite image? The quality of light between the locomotive and the background look too different to me to have been taken at the same time. The whole train and the two rails in the track all look flat and faded like it was taken from an older image while the foliage around it is crisp and shows a much higher dynamic range of colors. Looking very closely at the image, it almost looks like a black line around the locomotive's smokebox reinforcing my thought that the result looks like a composite image. Slambo (talk) 17:28, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Slambo, you have a good eye. It's one photo, but I did retouch it to lighten the shadows of the loco and train. If it doesn't look too good, I can upload the un-retouched version so you can compare them. Let me know what you think. JGHowes talk - 20:02, 23 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maps[edit]

I'm a bit stumped here. I did not render anything in dark brown, only in black, white and some shades of grey. Could it be something on your end perhaps? Pacific Coast Highway {springahead} 22:53, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, JGHowes!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:Waldorf Astoria foyer.jpg. What a great photo! I have used it for The Pennsylvania Society, an article I just expanded and nominated for GA. Are those your folks by the Christmas tree?--Blargh29 (talk) 03:24, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What a nice message to get when I logged on today! Yep, those are my folks by the tree. It took awhile to get the photo early on Christmas morning, when the lobby wasn't filled with people as it usually is. I used ambient light only (no flash) and slow shutter speed (steadying the camera on a railing), to get the desired result. JGHowes talk - 15:21, 12 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

JGHowes, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

This seems to be premature as there was an irregularity in the counts. -- User:Docu at 18:05, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What??? JGHowes talk - 20:36, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The count was 9-3, what are you talking about? I saw your post on Kanonkas' page claiming some people can't vote or shouldn't be counted but that's hogwash.RlevseTalk 21:39, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, did either of invite these two to vote on the RfA? -- User:Docu at 23:57, 19 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Certainly not. I would not stoop to such chicanery. Genuine community support is of utmost importance to me. JGHowes talk - 01:04, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DC[edit]

R say you go to DC meeting. He hopes he can go too. JoJoTalk 17:25, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, JoJo, I'll definitely be at the DC meetup on Jan. 9, unless we get another blizzard like yesterday's! I hope you'll be there, too, as I plan to visit Thailand in October and would like to hear all about it. JGHowes talk - 20:36, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I not going. R and I can answer questions though.JoJoTalk 21:26, 20 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

please rename these[edit]

File:AIAA_plaque.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

RE:Attribution licensing[edit]

The permission section on the image page reads "© by James G. Howes, September, 2006". Kindly update the same to CC-BY-SA (I take it thats what you meant). AroundTheGlobe (talk) 14:25, 12 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, Attribution is a different free license that CC-BY-SA, but it is equally acceptable at Commons because it allows for all free use, including re-use without limit, commercial use, derivative works, etc., the same as CC-BY-SA. By the way, even when an image is freely licensed, the original photographer remains the "copyright holder" and can require attribution, as I do for the hundreds of images I've taken and uploaded to Commons over the years. Thank You for the Wikipedia Picture[edit]

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:BDA_Bermuda.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA
