First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Ok, I know now that I am not a reviewer

I just realized what "trusted user" meant, and I realized that I have been uploading images from Flickr and saying that "trusted user J.delanoy has reviewed them. I apologize for accidentally lying, and if any of my images are questionable, please yell at me and/or delete the images. Thanks. J.delanoy 17:10, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, everybody makes mistakes. To get trusted user, you will need to show you know our policy regarding copyright, and licensing. --Kanonkas(talk) 14:21, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, you have a chance. First try to review/tag some images, do some deletion discussions nominate images to COM:DR. You have already uploaded some pictures. Do it for some time so we know you know our licenses. You know when you see a copvyio? Well you'll get more experienced as time past :) Best regards --Kanonkas(talk) 11:57, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

About the footballer

That was just me being way too trigger happy. I saw a footballer, I saw low resolution, I didn't read that it was cropped from something else so I was like "DELETE IT". I realised my mistake a few seconds later and undeleted it. Sorry about that. Lewis Collard! (lol, internet) 15:14, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem at all. ;) Lewis Collard! (lol, internet) 15:25, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Many thanks for adding OTRS permission to this file. Please could you check that the same email doesn't also cover File:Clarence Crafoord.jpg, File:Arne Larsson.jpg and File:First pacemaker (Siemens-Elema 1958).jpg? Best wishes, RupertMillard (talk) 20:44, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It did cover them, I just didn't notice. Pages updated now. J.delanoygabsadds 21:18, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Very many thanks. I'm so pleased! A few years ago a company released some pictures to me for Wikipedia, and because all the Is and Ts weren't dotted, they've since had to be deleted. So I'm really grateful people like you are ensuring everything's in order. RupertMillard (talk) 21:58, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, J.delanoy!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

OTRS info needed

I had a look at File:Yad Mordechai Products.jpg, which was uploaded to the commons on April 4, 2009. According to Commons:License Migration Task Force/Migration, files first published under the GFDL somewhere other than a Wikimedia project, must have been uploaded to Commons or to some other Wikimedia project before November 1, 2008. I just wanted to make sure that it was never published with a GFDL license before it was uploaded here. Guy0307 (talk) 07:33, 23 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What do you suggest we do? Guy0307 (talk) 12:23, 25 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there's this, and the fact that you could not possibly have come up with that username if you were a new user. J.delanoygabsadds 05:09, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. If you see the comment here, the copyright holder is releasing the image under CC-BY-SA; can't the image be kept as we already have the appropriate copyright permission in writing right there? In any case, I've asked Anna-Jane N to change the actual license tag on flickr, but that might take time. (The upload was requested by en:User:Anna-Jane N) SpaceFlight89 (talk) 17:09, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of course. I apologize for the confusion. J.delanoygabsadds 18:50, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

J.delanoy, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Hi! You have deleted that image based in the Flickrreview template. OTRS ticket request

makes conflicting statements about a specific set of images: it says that such images are (1) available under CC-by 3.0, and (2) in the public domain. Could you check the ticket to see which is correct, and then correct the permissions template? Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 19:04, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, All images published on the pages above were either taken by a Bureau of State parks employee or on behalf of the Bureau of State Parks and the copyright transferred to the Bureau of State Parks. These images are considered to be in the public domain." is taken verbatim from the email, so I really don't know what they mean. J.delanoygabsadds 19:37, 8 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

OTRS: Could you?

Could you please take a look at Ticket 2010011910007482? User:Stifle said that he was facing some error while opening this ticket. What can be the reason? -- Legolas from Mirkwood 09:48, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I apparently don't have permission to access that queue. Sorry. J.delanoygabsadds 22:02, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Joe. Did you verify the above ticket and send a mail to me? Coz I got a mail from Joe Daly, figured it must be you. The mail mentioned some problems like
"We have not been able to validate this authorization at this time, because we are unable to be sure that the email address which you have used is indeed that of the site where the content was originally published.
To confirm this authorization, you may:
 • Resend this email to us from an address listed in the contact page on your website (please ensure that you include the ticket number in the subject, so that our system will associate the new email with this one).
 • Amend (temporarily or permanently) the contact page on your website so that this address appears on it, and reply to this email saying you have done so.
 • Add a notice on your website specifying that the content is released under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license (or, in the case of an image, any other acceptable free licence), and reply to this email saying you have done so and linking to where we can see the notice."
I was not able to understand which email address are you referring to. I have previously also got permission from them to upload the images, from their site. Do you want the website to send any mail? Please revert back. -- Legolas from Mirkwood 03:41, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure who Joe Daly is; it's not me. I didn't send you any emails (unless I did it while I was sleeping :P ) J.delanoygabsadds 03:48, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh god, how to find out? -- Legolas from Mirkwood 04:04, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The ticket in question is Ticket:2010011910007482. Please can you help me to understand what the above means? -- Legolas from Mirkwood 04:08, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think what he's asking for is, can you have the owner of the website send a letter from an email address that is connected to his site? Like if his site was foobar.com, have him send a letter from xxxxxx@foobar.com, where xxxxxx is anything at all. The idea is to prove that he actually owns the site, because ideally, he wouldn't let just anyone associate themselves with his site like that. J.delanoygabsadds 04:44, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Question about a mistake I made

Hello J.delanoy, I put a request for speedy delete on a page for the STS-134 mission patch, but I didn't do it right. I wanted it to be for this one and not this one. I am new at all this stuff, and was wondering if you could tell me what I should do. The 2 files are the same, only one is smaller and in PNG format (should be kept) and the other is in JPG and larger (should be deleted as duplicate). Any help/advice you can give is much appreciated! We need your help at the Wikiproject medicine

Hello, Sorry for spaming your talk page, but this is very important. On the behalf of the Wikiproject medicine at the en.wikipedia, I am inviting you to be a part of the discussion going on the project's talk page about Patient images, The discussion started after I obtained a permission to more than 23000 dermatology related images, and about 1500 radiology images. As some editors of the Wikiproject medicine have some concerns regarding the policy of using patient images on wikipedia, and regarding patient consents. Also they believe that common's policy is not so clear regarding the issue. Unblocking Kuiper

The block of Kuiper was not to prevent him from edit warring, it was because he had edit warred, and had been warned about it before by Adambro. It's not that no one noticed it, it's simply that it wasn't relevant. -mattbuck (Talk) 07:11, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, why is your talk page edit-protected? -mattbuck (Talk) 07:12, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Also, experience has shown that once one Latuff image pops up on the radar of some of those wanting to edit war over categories, that same disruption soon spreads to other images. The way to deal with that problem is not to protect every Latuff image, it is to block those who, for whatever reasons, can't resist the temptation to play around with the categories when they should be know they should instead be discussing it. I trust if Kuiper does continue this behaviour you will quickly reinstate the block. Adambro (talk) 08:57, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have restored the block.
The block was performed for a documented reason and an unblock was denied.
The unblock was performed without any report on the Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and could be seen as a Wheel War. Furthermore, I fail to understand the reason for the unblock.
Please report on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard if there are concerns with this block. This is a copy of the message on Kuiper's talk page. Rama (talk) 10:02, 6 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I also find that your unblock without discussion or explanation was not appropriate given the circumstances, PK was clearly blocked for performing an action that he knew would cause disruption and further inflame an ongoing dispute. Gnangarra 02:41, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry you feel this way, this issue has been a big bone of contention and you wouldn't be the first person to quit commons because of it. However, I encourage you not to. I agree that if PK is such a problem he should be banned, but the community is very split on his actions, between those who think that his work excuses his attitude, and those who believe otherwise. -mattbuck (Talk) 10:56, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

De-adminship warning

Dear J.delanoy. I am writing to you to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2011 within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

Autopatrol given

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Morning Sunshine (talk) 16:08, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Declaration of State of Israel 1948.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
