copyright permission has already been sent to permission-commons wikimedia.org. Since the files were uploaded literally hours ago, they have not had time to be processed yet. Instead of being so trigger happy, maybe check the date and times for submission first. Just a thought. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bhedenberg (talk • contribs) 05:26, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Obvious copyright violations don't get a grace period. A screenshot from a movie (and identified as such) is an obvious copyright violation on its face. Obviously evidence can be presented, and there is a process in deletion to object and send the picture to a regular deletion request where that evidence can be considered. But even if the picture was deleted before that happens (or after), COM:VRT would still eventually process the evidence and undelete the image if the proof was valid. Once I saw that one of your other images had a valid permission tag, I removed the speedy deletion notice promptly. I see thousands of images by thousands of uploaders. I did not notice or remember that one of your images that I previously tagged for speedy deletion happened to have been given permission until I checked your other uploads. Hello and thanks for the response, how do I change the license of the football club logo? so that the logo is not deleted. siddicq 03:08, 11 November 2021 (UTC)

You can't, unless you can demonstrate that the works are freely licensed or in the public domain. Wikimedia Commons will not host unfree images. Some Wikipedias (English Wikipedia for example) allow for limited fair use uploads under strict rules. That would be your best bet if you want the files used in articles. IronGargoyle (talk) 07:46, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

it's been deleted can i re-upload with the correct license? --Siddicq (talk) 14:23, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

I am not sure what specific image you are referring to. Looking at your recent contributions, I would say most likely not (unless you can demonstrate with clear evidence that the image is free). Better to upload them to the individual Wikipedia projects you want to use them on under terms of fair use. IronGargoyle (talk) 14:34, 15 November 2021 (UTC)

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. PETA deletion listings

No comment on the underlying merit of the deletion nomination right now, but "tag" is a rather inadequate edit summary for the action of tagging an image for deletion. Please be more explicit next time. Cheers, Postdlf (talk) 00:45, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Ah, sorry about that. I will keep that in mind for next time. Given the number of pages I was tagging, I wanted to keep it short to keep myself from going insane. I've been having trouble getting any software to speed up the process to work on my new computer. IronGargoyle (talk) 01:02, 23 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi! You are wrong with Your statements about "no freedom to public panoramas in Ukraine". According to the Law of Ukraine, pictures can be freely taken in public places without any prohibition. It is my picture which was waken yesterday by me on my phone, and now issued according to common license. It is used as the illustration to the wiki-page which memorizes my cousin who was killed during Russian invasion in 2014. Dimitaru (talk) 18:34, 15 July 2018 (UTC)

I'm sorry, but noncommercial-only licences are not acceptable. The link you have added to the image does not change that. Response to Deletion Request

Hi IronGargoyle: You left the following message for me:

Files uploaded by WikiAccuracyEditor (talk · contribs) Collection of pictures of former NFL player and current attorney Shawn Stuckey. As a former NFL player, these images are definitely within scope, but I question whether the uploader has the rights to release all of these images. Some are professional head shots which reverse image search back to Stuckey's law firm pages, but others are professional sports photographs and others are red carpet pictures (none of which seem to show up on reverse image searches). It seems odd that one person would hold the copyright to all these images. Clarification and permission is likely needed via COM:VRT.

I am Shawn Stuckey. These pictures were either taken by me or for me at my request. I have had them in my possession for a while and have posted some of them on my personal Facebook page but I decided to include them on my wikipedia page since I needed to update numerous things that have taken place in my legal career of which the originator of the page was unaware. I have lots more pictures similar to these that were taken by me or by my handler at various charity events. I also have football pictures that I took or directed be taken for me. If you need anything else let me know. Thanks!

I guess why u wanna block my photo: this photo realy was made by photographer and of course he has copyright. But my page in Wikipedia needs photo of me, thats why i download this photo, as its me and ive paid for this photosession and the idea of the photosession is totally mine. I have no wish to assign copyright, just put photo of me on my page to identify myself.

also i saw that other people downloaded on their pages also professional photos not selfies, means these photos are made not by themselves. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 79.142.201.208 (talk) 21:59, 14 August 2021 (UTC)

As you note, you were not the photographer for the image and thus do not have the copyright (unless there is some written agreement with the photographer that transfers copyright to you). Wikimedia Commons requires that all media must be released under a free license (or must already be in the public domain). You cannot do this unless you hold the copyright. The fact that other problem photos exist does not mean that this one should be kept. The other ones should be deleted as well. IronGargoyle (talk) 14:28, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

Maud Gatewood and others

These photos are all in the public domain based on my research.

How do I show public domain in the future? Have I been not ticking something upon upload?

In my view, if no author is given and/or no copyright is stated, the work is freely given. Are you going by US copyright law or international copyright?

Thanks for your concern and hard work. Peabodyb (talk) 19:46, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

Why are they public domain? It's not an issue of ticking a box. You need to supply evidence. Your statement that "if no author is given and/or no copyright is stated, the work is freely given." is wrong in most cases. Anonymity does not eliminate copyright in the United States and it doesn't eliminate copyright internationally either. IronGargoyle (talk) 19:50, 4 September 2021 (UTC)

I take your point that there exists a world in which these photos in question are violating copyright but it is not my job to be the copyright police and to investigate who has copyright or not if it is not stated and presumptively given freely. For the Max Drake photo earlier that was removed, the photographer himself submitted consent but it was denied or just not taken care of. I am of the assumption, to be honest, that if it really offends someone that a work they feel is their copyright is on Wikipedia or what have you they can just submit a takedown request. Most people are honored to have their work on this site and would be dismayed that it is taken down in a lot of cases due to legalism and policy, which often is arbitrarily enforced at least in my experience, though I highly appreciate all that volunteers do. We all make this happen. I have put so many hours into all I have done with thousands of edits. Only every now and again have I ever been thanked. Instead, I am threatened when I make an unintentional error. It is not my job to be a copyright attorney. I did the best I could. Take care Peabodyb (talk) 23:50, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

I can't speak to particular cases where permission has indeed been given by the photographer. I would suggest contacting COM:VRT if you are able to provide evidence of free licencing for one or more of the images you have previously uploaded. I don't doubt it is frustrating to have files taken down, but would be far more disruptive to the goals of the project if insufficiently free media was allowed to remain on the site. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:S.A._Sozina.jpg

--Smithjulia (talk) 10:12, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

In spite of the fact that I'm not the author /photographer of this photo I kindly ask you not to delete it. This photo was taken 32 years ago at an unknown studio. It's a simple ID photo (2x3 cm) made for a pass card. I reshot it and enlarged with my phone camera. It's impossible now to know the name of the author because in fact the picture itself doesn't present some certain author's peice of work, it doesn't have the author because it's a product of a certain company that can't be defined now. If my arguments are not convincing enough, please recommend another solution of the problem. I'm Mrs. Sozina's daughter and I have some amateur photoes of my mother but they don't correspond to the official style of the article. So I would like to leave this one Hope for your understanding. --Smithjulia (talk) 10:30, 5 September 2021 (UTC)

If you have personal photos that you own the copyright to (and are willing to freely licence them), those would be preferable to a photograph with uncertain provenance. Photos taken 32 years ago are still copyrighted in most jurisdictions and this is true whether or not the author is known. IronGargoyle (talk) 04:03, 6 September 2021 (UTC)

¡Buenas noches! ¡Muchas gracias por los avisos! Me gustaría saber como agregar imágenes de Internet sin violar los derechos de autor. @Fatimawik: Copyrighted images in Wikipedia are likely "fair use". They can sometimes be uploaded to Wikipedia, but they can never be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Most pictures you find on the internet cannot be uploaded here. Only very old images (for example, those published in the US before 1926) or images that are deliberately released under a free license by their creator can be uploaded here. Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Geneviève de Paris

Hello, I would like to add, on this subject, that when the photos come into possession of INAH through the Mediateca (which is a physical place where these photos, as well as songs and even books, such as you can find in https://mediateca.inah.gob.mx/islandora_74/islandora/object/libro%3A843 under the same license), all copyright is immediately given to them as a government institution. Thus, as they are the legitimate copyright holders, publishing the media under the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, it should be free from any possible trouble, wether the author is still alive or dead, or if he's known or not. I'll agree in the museum case over it being deleted, since the only indication of a license is the one at the bottom on the page, which indeed makes unlikely to know if they're talking about the page as a whole or its contents. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Geneviève de Paris (talk • contribs) 02:03, 12 October 2021 (UTC)

Possible deletion of image "Sinsabores Corea.jpg"

Hi,

I'm constructing a wiki page about flamenco artist Valeria Tejero Navas. I'm new in all what is related with wikipedia edition. Valeria is an international artist and has done shows all over the world.

While I'm finishing the main wiki page in my own space before make it public, at the same time I'm just trying to upload photos with Valeria's representations and participations in International Theater Festivals, to use them in Valeria's Wiki page. The most of the photos are our own work, and perhaps we can have a few of them that have been send us by the proper festivals.

I have the same problem with the other photos you have requested me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RafaJimenezAguilar (talk • contribs) 10:25, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Possible Deletion due to copyright violations/Files uploaded by Artexposure

Dear IronGargoyle,

I am writing to avoid any of my work being deleted. Just to make sure I have submitted the images that you listed to upload wizard and have had communications with two volunteers about Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International. I have sent the letter with release statement to him in order to provide the proper release so that I can use these images on my Wikipedia page. I am waiting to hear back from either volunteer to make sure I have done this correctly. I have also submitted my POA for the artwork which gives me the right to use any and all images.

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

@Bakhshizada, any evidence that you are the copyright holder needs to be sent following the instructions at COM:VRT. IronGargoyle (talk) 02:34, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
In open sources, I cannot send documents, it is insecure. If they receive these documents, they can use them for their own benefit. Bakhshizada (talk) 02:39, 28 November 2021 (UTC)
I do not consider wikipedia and its structures to be protected. Bakhshizada (talk) 02:42, 28 November 2021 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

IronGargoyle, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

You write "deleted per nomination", but the second file has not been deleted. C.Suthorn (talk) 09:04, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

The other link on the DR did not go anywhere, but I see now the file you are talking about by going into the history of the uploader. Deleted. IronGargoyle (talk) 13:40, 24 April 2022 (UTC)
It was still in "what links here". And as far as i know, it should not have been renamed during DR, and clearly not without a redirect. --C.Suthorn (talk) 14:18, 24 April 2022 (UTC)

Hello IronGargoyle,

it seems one of the two files you decided to delete with this DR was not actually deleted. Please take a look. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 20:04, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Got it. IronGargoyle (talk) 20:10, 20 May 2022 (UTC)

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

VGrigas (WMF) (talk) 17:46, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

Hello IronGargoyle,

could you please have another look at this deletion request? You closed it in March, deciding to delete the files, but the uploader had changed it quite a bit, removing several files from the original DR. So these files are now still in Category:Deletion requests February 2022 awaiting a decision. Regards --Rosenzweig τ 17:52, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Got them, thanks. IronGargoyle (talk) 18:50, 23 July 2022 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:Lejolly Manfred 2012b.jpg

Thank you for your intervention about that deletion demand.

Can you apply it now ? (no other point of view since April).

The photographed person asked it again.

Thanks. Lucyin (talk) 11:36, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

I would prefer not to close a discussion I commented in. I would suggest making this request at COM:AN. IronGargoyle (talk) 05:28, 30 August 2022 (UTC)

Deletion requests/File:JimLondos.jpg

Hey IronGargoyle, just noticed you have closed the discussion with the closing comment saying "A dated press photo is evidence of publication". Can you please say which "dated press photo" you are referring to? AFAIK, no such a thing was provided during the discussion. --Mhhossein talk 05:02, 12 November 2022 (UTC)

The links provided by User:LM2000. Distribution of press photos is publication. It does not have to actually appear in a newspaper. IronGargoyle (talk) 13:44, 12 November 2022 (UTC)
Then how can you prove using this link that the photo was "distributed"? --Mhhossein talk 06:42, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
It is stamped with the name and address of the photographer on the back. IronGargoyle (talk) 22:43, 13 November 2022 (UTC)
Then it should not be interpreted as "distribution". We really don't know when the work was published or distributed and, with all due respects, I don't find your explanations at Commons:Deletion requests/File:JimLondos.jpg supporting your closure. Would you please re-open the discussion? --Mhhossein talk 06:31, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
There is no logical reason to stamp the back of a photograph with the name and address of the photographer unless it is being or has been distributed. The stamped date indicates that time of distribution. This is a prototypical example of a publicity press photo. COM:PRP mentions that a file should be deleted if there is "significant doubt" about freedom. Based on the points and evidence in the discussion, I do not believe that there is significant doubt in this case. I'm sorry you don't agree, but I will not be reopening the deletion request. IronGargoyle (talk) 20:04, 14 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the response, honestly I don't see how the stamp should be taken as 'distribution', rather it can be a common practice by the photographers so that their name is recorded. --Mhhossein talk 07:04, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
The only likely reason to want your name attached is if the photo is leaving your possession. The photographer does not need to remind himself that the photograph is his. Also note that there are two date stamps. There is no plausible reason to stamp something with multiple dates unless it involves publication/distribution. IronGargoyle (talk) 08:01, 16 November 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the responses. I have also opened a discussion at the COM:ANI so that other admins reflect their opinions. Best. --Mhhossein talk 05:24, 19 November 2022 (UTC)

Hello. Is this diff a mistake? Cheers. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 05:15, 22 November 2022 (UTC)

Did you see?

Hiya ! Did you see Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Ploreky comment at the bottom? Best wishes, Ellin Beltz (talk) 20:30, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

Yikes. IronGargoyle (talk) 07:52, 7 December 2022 (UTC)

Rather than me filing a lot of DR's could you evaluate this category directly, updating licenses as appropriate? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:11, 19 December 2022 (UTC)

Eh. I think your DRs have been a fine way of dealing with these. There are a few odd cases, but most are straightforward. IronGargoyle (talk) 03:08, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
@IronGargoyle: The concern is that the DR process might be seen as overly bureaucratic, and more direct curation would be more efficient.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 08:09, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

The reasoning should be obvious. I don’t want anyone else to have to see this affront against decency, nature and people with eyeballs. Dronebogus (talk) 13:48, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

It’s fine to claim a consensus for keeping this file, but that doesn’t change the fact that it seems to violate the licensing policy. I have started a discussion at Commons talk:Licensing#Hosting the text of free licenses on-wiki, where that text is non-free. Please comment there. Brianjd (talk) 05:38, 27 December 2022 (UTC)

How did you knew the photo had Facebook metadata? Trade (talk) 12:47, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

@Trade: If you go down to the bottom of an image and click to show extended details, there will sometimes be a string of letters and characters (instead of the normal camera information). Something like "FBMD” down there indicates that it was downloaded off Facebook. IronGargoyle (talk) 13:56, 3 January 2023 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Sts. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church (Ljubljana)

Hi, IronGargoyle. I see that you have closed a DR, but some images have remained tagged. Can you please check Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Sts. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church (Ljubljana) and delete the ones in the section 'Paintings'? Thank you. --TadejM (t/p) 06:48, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Done. Got confused because they were in two separate sections and the DR closing gadget only showed the first discussion closed. IronGargoyle (talk) 17:03, 12 January 2023 (UTC)

Not meant to be kept. I did have errors with a couple of images tonight where they look like they are deleting but it doesn't complete. This may have been one of them, but it seems to have deleted ok now. IronGargoyle (talk) 04:47, 24 January 2023 (UTC)
