Photo of the week[edit]

Hi :) Great idea!! Thanks for adding them and featuring them this way. I might do something similar with my images or ones I find on Flckr if I can get my act together. Take care, FloNight 18:30, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Truck-nerdy like-to-know[edit]

I asked a question on a picture talk page and Jeff G mentioned Your name; please read below: G®iffen 13:14, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image talk:Truck in a tree after Hurricane Katrina.jpg

Is this a Volvo? It sure looks like a Volvo cabin from the FL series, but I have no idea how it ended up anywhere near Katrina...? G®iffen 15:04, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
It appears from the image that the truck was owned or operated by Roko's Oysters & Seafood Inc., (985) 657-5344, Empire, LA, and carried a THERMO KING TD-II MAX refrigeration unit. However, it appears from at least five google hits that Roko's is currently at 112 Bowers Ln, Buras, LA 70041, very close (about 0.7 miles driving distance) to the middle of Empire, LA, and may have had "Empire" on its truck for advertising reasons only. You could, of course, call them and ask (they don't seem to have email), but that could be expensive from Denmark, or you could ask Infrogmation to call or stop by. — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 05:20, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
That is a couple hours from me. I could make a telephone call-- what specifically do you want to find out? I'll note that I don't know anything myself about the truck in the photo, but that Volvo vehicles are sold and not unusual in the United States. Almost every building in lower Plaquemines was either destroyed or so damaged that ith had to be rebuilt gutted to the frame, so it isn't so unexpected that some businesses may have moved their address when they were able to reopen at all. If I remember correctly (I've only been down there a couple of times, and not since the disaster) Empire and Buras are part of a long narrow stretch of community along the highway on the lower Mississippi, rather than discrete towns. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 14:26, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, more than one hour is a long way to a dane, more than a half is only when you have other things to do there anyway. The main topic is to find out what truck it is, and if Volvos are sold there, I'll just categorize it as such. I just thought Volvo were only sold in the White brand except for a few hooded models. I've only herard of the Volvo FL series in Europe ans Asia before. G®iffen 17:23, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'll just copy these last parts back to the picture talk page. G®iffen 17:25, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Roads and road signs[edit]

Category:Road signs in the United States has gotten way too big so we're orphaning it and splitting it up into the road categories. See Category talk:Road signs in the United States. Since road signs are placed for the benefit of the users of the road, and also because road signs are most frequently used in articles about the road itself, nobody so far has had an objection to placing them in the same category. I suppose we could do a category of just signs for Louisiana.—Scott5114 19:21, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Creating state road sign subcats sounds fine by me. -- Infrogmation 20:01, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The OTRS claim for Image:Kelly_Madison_7.JPG appears OK. (Good grief, you should have warned me it was NSFW. :/ ) However I am going to ask around for some opinions about it because I don't think it's acceptable regardless of the license. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 11:16, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! You've blocked this user and, watching his historial, I can see you're right. This user has asked me for help and I've talk with him and I explained to him their mistakes and how to do to load their photos in commons without problems. I ask you to give him a second opportunity and myself would guard him in their next actions.--Lohen11 10:02, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. That user has not merely had a problem uploading, but has also repeatedly uploaded copyright violations with false claims of licence and authorship. Messages have been left on users talk page and image pages many times since March without reply or improvement. I think the user has been given many chances far beyond a second. Thank you for your offer to mentor the user. On your reccomendation, if the user asks for an unblock on their user talk page, I'll consider it. But given Gabino's actions, what more can we do? Gabino uploaded some images on which the licence and authorship claims were clearly fraud. Thanks, -- Infrogmation 18:08, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! He seems to be regretted about his uploads and he left a message at his talk page: User talk:Gabino#Blocked. Besides, he requested our help at ca.wikipedia. I think he should have an other opportunity. Thank-you!--Iradigalesc (talk) 18:58, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Please, consider his unblock, now he knows the rules. He's a good user in ca.wikipedia and I think you'll not have any problem again with this user. If it's possible, answer me in my user talk. Thanks.--Lohen11 22:24, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Unblocked per requests. Thank you for helping the user, and reccomendations to help keep this type of problem from happening are welcome. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 22:30, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

using images as sources[edit]

Hi, on Image:Ford Motor Company assembly line.jpg you removed the literal link to the source image. I thought that would be handy so people could directly see where the image came from, and also for people viewing the source image to see what other images use that image. Out of curiosity more than anything else, why did you change the link to plain text? Cheers, Jayvdb 05:20, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ah. Actually, that didn't link directly to the other image page as it was malformed, which is why I removed the wikilink brackets. I see what it was intended to link to, and so have fixed the link. Thanks! Cheers, -- Infrogmation 14:00, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification[edit]

An image that I uploaded was deleted. However, I followed the example of the way another non free magazine was uploaded. Can you please explain the difference between why this has not been deleted, but mine was? Did I need to clarify something? Thanks. Bherbert 17:32, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use of copyrighted material is allowed on en:Wikipedia, but not here on Commons. If you see other copyright violations on Commons, they are not supposed to be here, please tag them as copyright problems or otherwise point them out. Thanks, -- Infrogmation 17:38, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Goud.png is correct ? ---- OS2Warp discussão 01:59, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I also noticed that this image is being removed from many articles on enwiki. Your deletion log indicates that there may be a replacement image? I can not find any link to one, can you please clarify? --After Midnight 02:51, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
What has happened. Many many many articles on the Dutch wikipedia are automatically replaced because of this deletion.... Rudolphous 05:11, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello there,
I guess this image is removed while there is a svg format available now. Personally I don't find it necessary to delete the png types but at least if you do so, replace it on the wikipedia's that use this image and don't be satisfied with just deleting the old version. This will not stimulate the people to see commons as a trustworthy place to store media. Theun 08:10, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
(By the way the replacement images are Image:Med 1.png,Image:Med 2.png and Image:Med 3.png)
Hello Infrogmation, it would save many people many hours of unnecessary work if you could undo all your deletions you made concerning this goud.png. At the same time you could make the replacement of the image goud.pgn by med 1.pgn, which would lead to the same result, but would give many people bring back a smile on their face on this beautiful sunday morning. Copyright problem[edit]

Hello Infrogmation,

you marked one of my uploaded pictures (Image:Booth-Bluff 2.jpg) as deleteable due to some copyright problems. Actually, the only reason why I uploaded this picture is, that there is another picture, which looks like a screenshot from the same show to me (Image:HansenHSP.jpg). There doesn't seem to be any copyright problems with the last picture. Why that? Nintendere 09:40, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. See Commons:Licensing for details of what is and isn't allowed here. HansenHSP.jpg is a screenshot of a broadcast television show as well? Thank you for the alert; I will so tag it. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 13:10, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Could you review the deletion of Image:James McGrory.jpg; it and a few others have been transferred here from enwiki, with original license of GFDL by w:user:Winterbottom (w:Image:James McGrory.jpg). See also Image:Patsy Gallacher.jpg, Image:Pat Crerand.jpg, Image:Danny McGrain.jpg and Image:Brian McClair.jpg‎. John Vandenberg 23:38, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The licencing on all of them seem to be quite dubious-- it looks like en:User:Winterbottom has been putting bogus self-GFDL licences on commerically made photos of UK footballers of previous generations. You might wish to get feedback from someone with familiarity with footballers of half a century ago. -- Infrogmation 23:56, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, on en:Wikipedia Winterbottom was challenged on some of his images on WP:PUI -- scans or snapshots of old magazines, not own work-- and stopped contributing to Wikipedia at time of first deletions. Sounds like we should list the lot of them for deletion unless they're sourced. -- Infrogmation 00:06, 30 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete this category? I thought we rename them all to "Music in"? Regards, Code·is·poetry 07:52, 5 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted it because I created it before I realized that a Category "2005 in music" already existed. It was after I deleted it that I realized that the "Music in [year]" format seemed more appropriate. Thanks for your feedback. I have already standardized the pre-2000 categories in the "Music in [year]" format, and if there is no objection soon, I will request a bot fix of the more recent cats which are in the "[Year] in music" format. I still don't get the procedures here on Commons for dealing with a dubious (but not blatantly problematic) image. The process, insofar as I thought I'd learned it, seems to keep changing, and I can't find any clear guidance. So I'm hoping that as an admin here you can help me sort things out. Image:Javelins.jpg has a claim of "own work", but there is no further explanation and it is an obviously posed photo from the 1960s. I frankly doubt the claim (though, of course, I've uploaded a couple of photos I took that long ago myself). Anyway, I have no idea how to proceed other than... by contacting you! - Jmabel | talk 02:15, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. My first thoughts: Check on the original uploader. Seems to be nl:Wikipedia, so maybe ask an admin also active there about the user, or the user who uploaded it here. If not satisfied by that, list on deletion requests. -- Infrogmation 03:59, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I sent a copy of the correspondence to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, as requested in the template. I can obtain any additional permission (e.g., with specific wording) as required. In that case, just give me a bit of time, because I have 5 other photos from the same source to upload (for 2 articles, maybe more in that group), and I'd like to get any additional specific permission all at once. I'm also still trying to figure out how to rotate those photos which are sideways.

This is for this photo.

Also, this photo.

I'm new to the Wikimedia Commons, so I'm on a learning curve here.

This media may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Panhard28.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-3.0}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. I don't recall what I scanned that from for en:Wikipedia 4 years ago nor if I still have the original. So I guess go ahead and delete. -- Infrogmation 23:20, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm concerned that this image was deleted without any discussion. I remember adding it to a couple of categories and it seemed to be properly licensed. It appeared to be a piece of artwork for a small independent movie uploaded and licensed by the filmmaker. --Simonxag 21:08, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That seemed to me to clearly be a commercial dvd cover, not a self-created poster as claimed. However if you think it should be undeleted or go through some other procedure, I am open to suggestions or discussion. Thanks, -- Infrogmation 21:47, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the image is clearly being used for the DVD cover which doesn't mean that it's not a self produced poster. The image will be owned by Steve Balderson or his company and an upload by the man himself or an employee ought to be quite legit. Another movie poster Image:XPepSquad-poster.jpg purports to be uploaded by his PA, but has a missing-permission tag. For once I am not struggling to assume good faith: the motivations, (independent artists are pro-freedom and desperate for any publicity), seem to add up. We need to hang on to these images if they are legal, Category:Movie posters is hardly overloaded. --Simonxag 22:56, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. I have seen so many dvd covers uploaded with (generally obviously false) "self made" claims that perhaps I was too swift to act with that one. I will undelete and ask for clarification. (If none is forthcoming, I may list it for deletion discussion in the future.) Cheers, -- Infrogmation 23:08, 26 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've been in touch with the uploader (Ella) on the Wikipedia en:User talk:Pipistrello2004 and she has replied on her talk page that Steve Balderson has sent an email. She has added "Will this work?" and I haven't a clue. Could you help us out? --Simonxag 23:01, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Replied on your talk page. Thank you for your work. -- Infrogmation 23:11, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's sorted now. Thank you for your help. --Simonxag 20:16, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

images[edit]

give me a hand, man. i'm uploading images to improve portuguese articles i'm creating, but the images are always deleted. see that i just upload: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:World_Baseball_Classic_Logo.png has something wrong? the preceding unsigned comment was added by Wild rover (talk • contribs)

Yes, as the message left at User talk:Wild rover explained, it was not a free licenced image. Commons only accepts free licenced images. This has been explained on your talk page more than once, in both English and Portugese. I think you saw the messages, since you blanked the page more than once. If you need to see the messages again, you can look at "page history" on your talk page. See Commons:Licensing (in English) or Commons:Licenciamento (Portugese). What else can I give you a hand with? -- Infrogmation 23:04, 28 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

so, how can i put the "wbc logo" on the portuguese article? why the english article about the "world baseball classic" have? --Wild rover 05:58, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That would be because English Wikipedia allows fair use pictures, whereas Portuguese does not. It was an editorial decision by the people at the Portuguese encyclopedia. It looks like you're simply out of luck. Patstuart 15:44, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

An image you deleted was re-uploaded.[edit]

Just letting you know that Image:SsBB_mx.jpg was re-uploaded after you deleted it. I nominated it for speedy deletion. Ipankonin 00:32, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. -- Infrogmation 01:02, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, The Source in Agência Brasil's workings must be a URL. You can read "To the uploader: You must provide a link (URL) to the original file and the authorship information if available.".--OsamaK 04:17, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the explanation. -- Infrogmation 20:53, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infrogmation:

Oooops, on that Great Goddess Teotihuacan photo. I neglected to include the Flickr link for that one. I have in the past and will hopefully remember in the future. Flickr is an honest-to-goodness goldmine, although perhaps it's more like panning for gold: you spend a long time sloshing for a single nugget.

Anyway, glad you like them. To me, an article's not complete without images. Keep up the good work, Madman2001 02:36, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Nothing new. It seems the contact section of the web is abandoned. The author doesnt answer my messages. ---- Fernando Estel ☆ · 星 (Talk: here- es- en) 10:25, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Bonsecours Market Montreal Quebec Old Postcard.jpg[edit]

Hi. Image:Bonsecours Market Montreal Quebec Old Postcard.jpg looks like a useful image very likely to be in the public domain. However I note that you listed the author as "unknown" and that the "author died more than 70 years ago". That doesn't seem to make much sense-- you don't know who it was, but you know when they died? Puzzled, -- Infrogmation 03:49, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm sorry, I don't have much information and the way it is written it is in fact strange, but I did not upload this image first and I am not the one who wrote that. The original uploader and the one who wrote this information is User:RedAndr. I tried some research on google and found an ebay link [2] showing the same image in black and white suggesting that S. J. Hayward published it, but I don't know if it's related to the photographer Sydney Jack Hayward. Beyond that, I can't really find anything more, I hope someone could find more information about the author, but apart from that I also think this is very likely to be in the public domain. --DarkEvil 05:11, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I see you uploaded a cleaned up version, my mistake; I will ask the original uploader. Sorry to bother you with irrelevent question. Cheers, -- Infrogmation 05:20, 7 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
