First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

Image deletion warning Image:Pochuetam.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Hello, Iflwlou!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Heraldry[edit]

Hola!

(Online translation: Hi. Analyzing your coats of arms, I wonder, do you know of heraldic?, Your shields honestly confuse me, so I searched the official images of some shields to see where this inconsistency and I noticed that the colors of your versions not match the colors of the official versions. For the monochromatic representation of the shields (prints, sculpture, etc.) the colors are represented by conventional scratched.)

(Online translation: For example, this is the official image of the shield of Bishop Francis Hsu Chen-Ping, and according to the Convention, the shield should look like this (I got to Test.SVG), unless you have other images that indicate the contrary.) --SajoR (talk) 07:50, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hola!.

(Online translation: Interesting information, I now understand. This ecclesiastical heraldry variant in China is documented in a book or website? this information should be in the encyclopedia and must be supported by a reliable source. I also want to know if this variant ecclesiastical heraldry China is properly regulated or if each bishop decides the color of the hat. External ornaments are secondary, the most valuable is what is on the inside of the shield, each inner element has its meaning, which along with the other elements form a message, for example the Bishops of Hong Kong like to put on their shields as a reference the city and the sea, indicating the close cultural and historical relationship of the city with sea, this combined it with elements such as a traditional boat or the wall, to indicate their Chinese roots, along with religious elements. In the end everything is a message.
I recommend you to add a note explaining that for cultural reasons, some Chinese bishops do not wear green hat, also add the web address that served as a source, as in this example.

Hola!

Coat of arms problem[edit]

Hi Iflwlou!

I've noticed that you've been making SVG Simplified Ecclesiastical Heraldry. I just wanted to say that can you please stop extending or making the whole coat of arms wider. Please use the templates properly and don't make changed to the template. It makes it very unorganized. I've re-done the coat of arms you've made to make it more organized.

Creative Commons LIcense Infringement[edit]

As a person who loves the Creative Commons, I am disappointed to see someone who is such a copyright advocate infringe on the rights of the creative commons. I found http://www.amazon.com/dp/B007XVW50C/ infringing on your image http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Female_model_A_04.JPG he does not cite you as the author and he also is not releasing his work in the creative commons as per your sharealike. I would hope that you request a DMCA takedown notice to Amazon to let him know that being a copyright bully means also obeying copyright.

Why I am concerned about your images[edit]

First, I want tell you that I think you are a good editor. Please do not be upset with me. This is not personal. This is about files, not you. I am just trying to do what is best for the project.

Now, about your coats of arms images that you created. I see issues here:

1. The sources are sometimes blogs. Those may not be reliable sources.

2. Some sources show black and white. You made colour images from them. How did you know what colours to choose?

3. Some parts of the images are different from the source images. In some cases, the differences are great. What you have produced in some images seems very inaccurate.

Best wishes,

Anna Frodesiak (talk) 20:01, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I has a litte bit upset, but not because of you, because I fight for long time have no results. You are a good editor too, although you are some style, I do not appreciate, I guess you have the same thought of me.

1. Because this sources is only sources I can found, and the blogs is maintained by Catholic priests.

2. Some colour is told by pattern provider, some reference by this.

3. How can I explain to you the concept of Heraldry in my pitifu English, no. I learning Heraldry from User:SajoR, you can ask him, if his say I make mistakes, so I make mistakes.--Iflwlou (talk) 14:55, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your coats of arms image creations[edit]

Ping: Yann, Jmabel, Jeff G., Wikicology, Philg88, Underbar dk

Hi Iflwlou. I am posting here to engage you and others in a discussion about your coats of arms creations. The problem is that many are quite different from the source. Many sources are blogs. There may also be copyright issues.

These emblems now appear in a lot of articles. I do not want to see incorrect content in this Encyclopedia, whether it is text or imagery. I worry that, over time, these emblems will be used in more and more articles.

Here is an example:

The source is a blog. The emblem differs from the source in that the bishop's hat is different. The "L" thing to its right becomes a swirly thing.

Here is a list of the roughly 100 emblems. Many are sourced from non-blogs, so that is good.

Extended content

So, thoughts? Is the blog-sourcing a problem? Copyrights? The difference in appearance? Should this be ignored and we move on to other things. Should the blog-sourced ones be removed from articles, and a caveat added to the description? I just would like the community to help decide.

  • As I already said at the Village pump, "if the user is creating his/her own graphics and correctly following a blazon, that should usually be unproblematic." Two renderings of the same blazon will not look identical, and in fact if they were identical that would be a copyright problem. As I continued, "...I don't read Chinese... so if [the] references include a blazon, I can't read it. If the relevant part of the references are just the images, it's hard to determine whether these uploaded images faithfully follow the blazon, because just from one artist's representation of a coat of arms there is no way to know how specific the blazon may be (e.g. if it just says "bishop's mitre, goules" that leaves the artist a lot of latitude)." But offhand, the images I checked look like perfectly plausible renderings of the same blazons as the images referenced. - Jmabel ! talk 04:21, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Anna, you say "The emblem differs from the source in that the bishop's hat is different. The "L" thing to its right becomes a swirly thing." It is very unlikely that the blazon is more specific than to specify a mitre (hat) and crozier (hook), their approximate location and orientation, and their color (in broad terms, e.g. "goules"). Different artists' renderings will inevitably differ. - Jmabel ! talk 04:24, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough Jmabel. Thank you. If you and the community think this matter should be dropped, I would be more than happy about that. I just wanted to be sure. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 04:51, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Its too far for my English ability, it's very difficult for me to understand this discussionsthis discussion at the village pump. It took me a whole day to understand. I'm sorry, but I still don't quite understand. Can anyone simply tell me what this discussions are about? --Iflwlou (talk) 15:27, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to be about two things. (1) Whether your sources are reliable. (2) A point on which I think Anna was simply confused: two artists working from the same blazon will inevitably draw a coat of arms differently, and judging by her remarks she didn't know that. - Jmabel ! talk 16:18, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jmabel. --Iflwlou (talk) 12:27, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Jmabel. Yes, I was confused. I understand now that #2 is not a problem. As for #1, I have responded about that below. Best wishes, Anna Frodesiak (talk) 16:44, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Iflwlou, again, I am so sorry. And I am sorry that communication is so difficult.

I just tagged the following files with Template:Lacking insignia source. This is because the source was either a blog, a forum, wordpress, another questionable source, or own work.

If you can please find better references to show these emblems are correct, that would be wonderful.

File:Sagara Chotsuna.jpg[edit]

Hello, Iflwlou. Is the person of the photo File:Sagara Chotsuna.jpg you uploaded is definitely Sagara Nagatsuna (zh:相良長綱) ? From the appearance and wearing medals, this person looks like Kabayama Sukenori (zh:樺山資紀, see also File:Count Mr. Sukenori Kabayama, the Minister of State for Education.jpg). The Elongated cloth hanging on this person's shoulder is for wearing 1st class of the Order of the Rising Sun (zh:勳一等旭日大綬章, see also File:UsgovrisingsunGC.jpg). However, medals given to Sagara when he was alive were lower than 4th class, and these were supposed to hang on the chest.--庚寅五月 (talk)

Thank you for your response. To rename, please add Template:Rename to the file like (new file name).jpg.--庚寅五月 (talk)
I confirmed that the rename has already been done and a same photograph (image quality and the shape of frame are different) was published in Taiwan Taikan (臺灣大觀, Nihon Gōdō Tsūshin Sha, 1932) as Governor-general Kabayama.--庚寅五月 (talk)
