So if your "amateur" system of control and contributors does'nt work, it's not our responsability! I wont come and do the same permission documents three times per month...!!!!!!!! Hello, Hersfold!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Opt out page[edit]

FYI - I made this edit. I think it is important to emphasize that one point. I also added BetacommandBot who received a couple of notices. - Rjd0060 (talk) 21:33, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Oh. Yeah, that would be an important thing to point out. :-) Thanks for adding BetaBot, too. Hersfold (talk/work) 21:35, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notify the right user[edit]

Your bot left me this message. This is strange because the notice should be left at User talk:Trouble022. Multichill (talk) 18:04, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You're half right - it should have gone to User:Andrew c, since the bot was leaving a note about the OTRS received template rather than the status of the image itself. I think I know what was causing the problem, so I'll look into fixing it shortly. Thanks for the note. Hersfold (talk/work) 19:40, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Re: File:Ryan Key - Lights and Sounds 06.jpg[edit]

I sent the author of the image a message regarding the image's use. I also ask that the author verify the permission to permission-commons. Also, I did sent the e-mail permission to commons, but was told to contact the author of the image. I missed the e-mail and barely read it today. Maybe that can solve the problem. Re Aedas files detected by your bot[edit]

I have seen the messages left on my talk page regarding a number of Aedas files. Aedas were happy with the licensing as it stood prior to the creation of the commons, however, they are now not happy and would like the images removed. So please go ahead and delete all of the pages marked by the bot, the sooner the better as far as I am concerned. I would have requested a deletion my self but am unsure of the procedure. An email was sent with an alternative form of wording bus as I expected it was returned with a request that they use the workding prescribed by wimimedia commons. This is still being debated at Aedas but I feel the best thing is to remove the pages and I will start again when they can provide me with some images that we can use or I am able to go and take some photographs.

Sorry[edit]

I am italian and i do not understand your message...--Alador (talk) 09:15, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I don't speak Italian, but I will work on getting someone to translate the bot's messages in the future. The notes my bot left you say that our OTRS team has not received information about the copyright for some images you uploaded. Unless they receive this, the images will be deleted soon. Please send that information to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org as soon as possible. I've translated this using Google to try and help.
Hersfold (talk/work) 15:58, 1 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
ok but i am the only creator and i have the copyright... if this images are not ok can i cancel them? i uploaded right images with right copyright.. i was not very good with this things--Alador (talk) 11:17, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As I said, you will need to send this to permissions-commons for verification. I don't work with copyrights here, and don't have these answers for you.
Come ho detto, sarà necessario inviare questo a permissions-commons per la verifica. Io non lavoro con i diritti d'autore qui, e non si hanno queste risposte per te. Hersfold (talk/work) 15:15, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot edits[edit]

Hello!

As I commented here, I think it would be a good idea (if possible) to have just one edit at the users talk page when the bot need to notify about OTRS pending.

What do you think about it?

Have a nice week! ;) Helder 11:53, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

I will look into it - as Stifle indicated, you're not the first to ask. The major concern I have with this is that should the bot crash or encounter some other problem forcing it to quit (i.e., someone leaves a permission notification on its talk page despite several notices not to), a bunch of notices won't get handed out. It should be possible to correct this, but with my college classes starting I've only so much time. I will start looking into it, though. Hersfold (talk/work) 15:01, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok! Thanks and good classes for you! =) Helder 21:16, 3 September 2009 (UTC)

Request[edit]

Hi there, I've a request about those "File:XXX may be deleted". Could you make it so that the section title includes a link to the media file? like "File:XXX may be deleted". It would greatly help identifying a user having used a large number of false OTRS statements. Thanks in advance! --Eusebius (talk) 14:45, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, that's not hard. Hersfold (talk/work) 02:19, 4 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HersfoldOTRSBot[edit]

Hi, could you make the delay 60 days instead of 30 days, for a while at least? There is a huge backlog in OTRS and many files are in danger of deletion whereas e-mails might have been sent for them. Thanks in advance. --Eusebius (talk) 22:17, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That would require recoding the bot, and it's already mostly through the backlog; it's only got about 10 days' worth to go at this point. Sorry. Hersfold (talk/work) 01:30, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You know that we are currently unable to process tickets in a timely fashion, and yet you keep running your bot. Please stop for a while! --Eusebius (talk) 06:58, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I noticed that there is some permissions from 2009. Did the bot skip those or why are they not nominated for deletion? --MGA73 (talk) 10:21, 13 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Glancing at a few of these at random, it looks as though they're all marked with OTRS received - these files have had some sort of information sent in to OTRS, but it wasn't sufficient (for whatever reason) to confirm the permission status. The bot does notify the OTRS volunteer who added this template about these images once - when it does so, it adds a comment to the image so it knows not to pester them again, but takes no further action. To get these cleared out, you'll need to talk to the OTRS volunteer who added the template to see what's going on with those images. I don't have access to the system, so can't look into this myself. Hersfold (talk/work) 23:54, 15 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Then perhaps we should split up category so files with OTRS received and OTRS pending does not end up in the same category. The text at the top of Category:OTRS pending tells that the bot does the job. Either that or that you make your bot to take care of OTRS received :-) --MGA73 (talk) 08:01, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I can't do the latter, as I'm not an OTRS volunteer so have no way to check up on those images to see if any progress has been made, and even if I were, the bot has no way to make that judgment on its own. As for the former, that is an idea, but again, I'd rather not do so myself as I'm not very active on this project and I don't want to interfere with how the OTRS team runs things. Hersfold (talk/work) 01:46, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I have split up the category so OTRS pending and OTRS received goes in seperate categories. I think that makes it easier to manage.
It looks like I misread your answer. My intention was that the bot should inform uploaders if OTRS pending remained on a file for 30 days and inform editor that added OTRS received if nothing happend within 30 days. It does that which is perfect.
The reason I asked originally was because there was some files from 2008 and may 2009 that still had a OTRS pending or OTRS received. I first thought that such old files was nominated for deletion automaticly.
Only problem is files without a timestamp. It would be nice if a bot could fix that. --MGA73 (talk) 09:47, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is one, I think - it's not mine, but I've noticed some bot edits adding a timestamp to pending templates. Hersfold (talk/work) 20:09, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Neil Young[edit]

I'll inquire about an email, but the user did mention that he/she sent in an email - there's nothing at all from the creator, Per Ole Hagen? Connormah (talk | contribs) 02:28, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't know, I'm not an OTRS volunteer. You should try asking at the OTRS noticeboard, making sure to mention the file name. Hersfold (talk/work) 20:58, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'll put in a note - thanks. Connormah (talk | contribs) 03:37, 11 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:Fredericka_Mendelbaum2.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Request to restart HersfoldOTRSBot[edit]

Hi Hersfold. Could you please restart your bot (HersfoldOTRSBot (talk · contribs)? It stopped working in December 2011. See also here. Thanks! Trijnsteltalk 11:04, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'll see if it needs any updates and (if not) fire it off shortly. Hersfold (talk/work) 01:00, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, done! Fortunately it looks like the backlog wasn't too long this time. Hersfold (talk/work) 01:53, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Hersfold. Thank you for the quick reply! I noticed you forgot one (maybe more), so I impersonated your bot. :-) Perhaps you could check Category:OTRS pending again? Many thanks. Kind regards, Trijnsteltalk 09:31, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Now that's very odd - the bot said that it had finished its run without any errors. Unfortunately I don't think that problem is recoverable; it gets the list of users to notify from the images it tags. Since they're already tagged (and thus not in the category any more) it has no way to locate them. I'll try to scan through things and try to figure out if it missed any other notifications and (more importantly) why. Hersfold non-admin (talk) 14:13, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, so it turns out that particular case actually wasn't a problem with the bot. It looks like that particular file was marked for deletion manually some hours before the bot was run (file history); when the bot ran, it no longer had OTRS pending on it, so it wasn't processed. I'll still take a quick look, but since this wasn't a bug after all, all should be well. Hersfold non-admin (talk) 14:18, 12 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please give a more descriptive reason[edit]

I see that you have blocked one of the accounts out. You have reviewed the request for 1YlGC6dsynvm but your reason was "No.". Would you please tell me what you mean by "No" and what reasons you declined the request because I did not make the disruptive edits?

Commons bot inactivity[edit]

Hello! Your bot User:HersfoldOTRSBot has been listed at Commons:Bots/Requests/de-flag_3 as being inactive for over two years. As a housekeeping measure we'd like to remove the bot flag from inactive bot accounts, unless you expect the bot will be operated again in the near future. If you consent to the removal of the bot flag (or do not reply on the deflag page) you can rerequest the bot flag at Commons:Bots/Requests should you need it again. --Dschwen (talk) 19:51, 3 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
