Blocking my account[edit]

Hello! Because I have left the project, overwrote my password with something unidentifiable and deleted my email address, it would be nice if you or another admin would block my account and protect the rest of my former pages against writing (just the source template for the climate diagrams needs to be edible in future as long it is needed). Thanks --89.55.153.243 06:04, 18 May 2008 (UTC) (JörgM)[reply]

Thanks for the message. I don't think I can do this as I have no proof that the IP is "you". Equally protecting pages because someone is not around would not be something that is done but I will keep an eye on them. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:14, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Because it's impossible to make an edit using my account to give you an identification, the only way I can give you something like that is to make you look here where I asked a de-admin to lock my current de-account (sorry, of course in German – and I know that he does not speak English). Former de-account has been locked at my own instigation, too. Regards -- 89.55.139.175 09:33, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. In light of your suggesting I do, and others agreeing, I've submitted an RfA. Thought I'd let you know and thank you. -mattbuck (Talk) 17:33, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

user:78.31.68.74 - Open proxy[edit]

Hey Herby, could you please block that proxy? link -> proxy site, here is the proxy in action: example on en Wiki. If you could block it on En Wiki and Commons. --Kanonkas(talk) 13:25, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok - some views on Open Proxies. First - it is against policy to edit from them BUT many folk do....
I used to block them without a thought BUT many people edit constructively from OPs (look at some of the edits from these).
So now I only block if they are disruptive somewhere (even if they disrupt en wp I may not block them on Commons etc). If named users vandalise from them then I'll block them anywhere.
On that specific IP Luxo is timing out at present but it does not appear to have been used to contribute (nor vandalise) the project. Blockable in policy but few experienced admins would block in practice. Hope that helps. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:39, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I thought you blocked open proxies right away here. I just didn't see it on the block policy , my mistake. Thanks for the info, and good luck with your RFB ;) --Kanonkas(talk) 13:47, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As to policy I think this is one area where Meta "over rides" local policy. As I say I used to block them but on Commons as well constructive edits come from Open proxies (& some parts of the world have no choice but to use them) and "thanks" :) --Herby talk thyme 14:14, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Giggy's RfB[edit]

G'day

I just wanted to say a huge thanks for your support in my RfB. It just closed, and I'm now a bureaucrat. If you ever want to discuss any of my actions, as a 'crat, admin, or plain old user, please don't hesitate to leave a note on my talk page.

Looking forward to you joining me! Cheers, giggy (:O) 10:48, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, the Flickr user changed the license fast. I left her a message about having uploaded her image to Commons. She didn't respond, but she must have not have liked it. :-/ Thanks for the speedy deletion. Arria Belli | parlami 15:18, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I request that image to be restored. I reviewed it and clearly saw a free license, which then got changed to a non free license. Instead the uploader on flickr should contact us and hold a deletion debate. See this template {{Flickr-change-of-license}} thank you Herby for your time. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:37, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflit with Kanonkas) Looks like it's a case of a photographer antsy about her work being reused. :-( The odd thing is that I left her a message on another of her Flickr photos that I uploaded, but she's left the CC license on it and didn't nominate it for deletion here. Weird. Arria Belli | parlami 15:39, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To Kanonkas - looks like the license was changed after you reviewed it - given that do you really want it undeleted? It is a copyvio after all. --Herby talk thyme 15:53, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I do herby, I belive the image should be through a deletion debate before getting deleted because it's a "copyvio". All images which have been licensed under a free license, can not be withdrawn. So unless the flickr uploader comes here and makes a deletion debate, til then the image should stay because it was licensed under a free license, which you can not change to a non free license. Thank you, best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 16:06, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Last word[edit]

Over two months ago you blocked me (March 8th), for telling Cecil to fuck off.

I come here not to reason with you, because I know that this is absolutely futile. I will not waste my time talking about fair use, copyright law, the potential of wikipedia ruined by editors like Cecil, etc.

I am simply here to clear my head. To be perfectly honest, whether you read this or not is irrelevant.

My "fuck off" comment overshadowed Cecil's abusive deletion labels. Not surprisingly, no one seemed too care. Unfortunately you can't see the 10 or more photos that Cecil deleted, but all of them are clearly from the late 1800s. The deletions of those photos was yet another contribution destroyed by lay editors who know little law and love the power rush when they use their little authority against other contributors.

What if I would have never said "fuck off"? A prolonged fight over copyright would have not changed the harmful behavior of Cecil or any of the other editors who zealously delete material on the wikipedia projects. One year later, another Cecil, who knows as much intellectual property as little as he does, would come along and re-label the same images.

The only possible good that could come out of the "fuck off" comments though is that at least one editor, Cecil, will think twice before abusing wiki tools and deleting works which are clearly not copyrighted, but I doubt it.

The longer I spent on wikipedia projects, the more time I had to spend policing my contributions from editors like Cecil. I spent less time contributing, and more time bickering with people I despised.

On a side note, Cecil's temper tantrums and threats of leaving the project are typical. Users usually do this to garner sympathy.

Because of abusive editors like Cecil, I stopped adding anything to wikicommons a long time ago. So if you were offended at the least by these comments, ban away. I already walked away months ago anyway. Odessaukrain 06:19, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough - you have had your say & I understand what you say. However I will not put up with abuse of people on Commons (or other wikis when I see it). My user page states that & I will continue to deal with abuse in that way. --Herby talk thyme 09:27, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Closed, access revoked (White Cat requested it). I would have hoped, and hope that in future, you would/will contact the bot-op for this sort of thing. This has also been raised (not by me) at your RfB. giggy (:O) 11:32, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If they hadn't "retired" as stated on their talk page it wouldn't have been an issue anyway in my view. As they had not responded to other messages there I could only surmise that they had actually retired I'm afraid.
I hope it will be a long time before any other de-admin requests are required but I agree that anyone active should be contacted. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 11:38, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help I need a Bureaucrat[edit]

Would you be able to upsur an account that has no current edits only deleted edits? I'm about to create a global account and I'd like to use User:Grey Wanderer as my user name as that is my name on Wikipedia. I currently have an account here under User:Wanderer which has no uploads. I'm about to go through the task of transferring a pictures from Wikipedia here and this would help me keep things straight. If this is the wrong place to request things of that nature sorry. Thanks for anything you can do. 68.187.143.123 19:39, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - can you post a diff link here (To do this got to your home wiki (en wp) and on your user page there make an edit stating something along the lines of "I am user:Wanderer on Commons and I confirm I want to change my name to my name on this wiki". If you then go to the "history" of your talk page and "compare" the edit with the previous one you will have the "diff" (difference). Copy the url from your browser and post that here. I'll then do the rename - thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:16, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Errors incurred in my Gallery page[edit]

Hi Herbythyme

I encountered a problem when I click the button of the gallery under my login name in Wikimedia Commons. The screen says; "Database Error: Unknown error", and "Failed to connect to database!". May I ask this is a Wikimedia Commons problem or my computer problem?

I am looking forward to hearing from your advice at your earliest convenience.

Hi Herbythyme

Thank you so much for your wonderful help. Your advice 100% works. By the way, may I have another question, which may be not belonging to your duties as an administrator of Wikimedia Commons.

I encountered another problem just two or three days ago that I cannot enlarge the images when I click "Full resolution‎" under an imgae in Wikimedia Commons. For example, under my gallery page, the first photo is Image:Yarra River and Fish Boats.jpg. However, after I clicking "Full resolution‎", the screen tells me: The image http://uploadwikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/00/Yarra_River_and_Fish_Boats.jpg cannot be displayed, because it contains error This only is happened when I use the explorer Mozilla Firefox. I can enlarge images when I use Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer. Do you have any easy solutions to my question? It would be greatly appreciated if you may help.

Many thanks in advance--Donaldytong 12:46, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Herbythyme

Thanks for your message left in my talk page. Now I think it is a problem of the explorer Mozilla Firefox because I also cannot enlarge any images in another website (www.panoramio.com). I try to get support from Mozilla Firefox.

I waited until the 'admin in' crowd completed their congrats to say congratulations for whatever you were just promoted to -- you are the only user on my watchlist that is involved much with that stuff. Do you get swag now? -- carol (tomes) 12:42, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The increase in pay was staggering :)
It allows me to rename people - there has been quite a rise in requests given SUL. I also get to change people rights to admin or flag a bot account. Just more janitor tasks really. I keep trying to get stuck in to categories where I see much work but there is never enough time. Thanks Carol & regards --Herby talk thyme 13:00, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The 'colorful' user names -- to watch them become involved and then lose the colors and just be contributors, some of them. Is it that ant article that I read turned into a research project? There is one here on your talk page like that, it makes me think about that. "Lars" is a name from my first free software get together and the recent movie I saw had some strong personal things that cross that event, things that would not cross like that for everyone -- although I would have enjoyed the movie much more without the way in which it became so personal, it was a really great movie. I guess I saw that Lars got administrative privs as well. This is about 'swag', eventually. Since that event, I have been almost always comfortable -- with shelter and without too many real concerns. Not too much swag came my way though and I had been kind of working for that when I first became involved with the freesoftware stuff.
I understand that it takes a hacker to know a hacker, my few hacks in recent years were usually accidental -- and I am not much interested in policing nor would I be very good at it. Having the feeling that writing articles at wikipedia is selling wrong information depending on what reference I cite was an incredibly bad feeling. Citing online books from the early 1900s, was a different feeling, mostly good -- but that can be hacked as well.
That the English did not use real women to be the actors in their theatre -- this was very very wrong and should have changed.
It should be okay to just use your real name online. I think it should be okay that is the reason I use mine. You can be Herbythyme though, it is a great nick in many ways. I nominated an image of a volkswagon that I drew for my website at FPC, is 'Herby' that kind of herby or is it another? -- carol (tomes) 13:26, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Strange isn't it - I've never seen the "swag" aspect of tools that you refer to. When I deal with vandals I found I needed to be able to block them (& delete some rubbish) & so asked for the tools. When dealing with particularly difficult vandals Checkuser allows me to see where they are from & deal with them better so I asked for the tools.
I've let go some 5 or so rights in the past 6 months as I was no longer using them - they really don't matter to me - they are tools to be used.
The name comes from the fact that I like cooking & I like gardening. Thyme is one of my favourite herbs (I have quite a few in the garden in flower now). The signature came from this one! --Herby talk thyme 15:51, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thyme is my favorite herbaceous flavor and odor as I have smelled it in a cosmetic product and liked it there. In Michigan, I grew little shrubs -- borders of it where I was living. Here in California, I pass a house that has large shrubs of it. To reduce the relativity of the language, in Michigan, they are like deciduous small shrubs, sprawling and about eight inches tall. The shrub of them I have seen in California are clipped so I don't know how high they are naturally but they are four foot tall or taller and they never lose their leaves. When I was gardening, I rarely read about things that would not grow in Michigan so I have no idea what the variety is that does that. Since I have been writing articles on English wikipedia I should say that I have no idea what the species is that does that. It is two different languages and I am comfortable with how they don't join together very well.
The mention of the movie -- reviewing movies on my web site seemed to hurt me; literally not get me to where I wanted to be. The overlap I saw in the recent movie was a flaw, its removal would improve it. I am looking at the giant V in the new image review mechanism the one thing about that movie that I thought about was if the number of masked people in that really large ending was equal to the number of people I had encouraged to read the tutorial that had helped me. The fact that my ATM card did not work here was not my doing and to the best of my estimation, just another example of how creatively depraved and insecure the California machine/system is. Almost all of the rest of it is shared imagery -- like in XMen, when that one mutant was controlling the weather; I really really did think about my home (where I want to be so that is not a big deal) and how much I liked to see the weather, but not to control it -- just see it. Its not here like that. I hardly think that this is either unusual nor is it incredibly personal just to me. I think that a good movie, especially one made of a comic book character, is an exaggeration of things that many people feel and all three of these movies had that.
Here is another thing. While working -- the "day job", I had to eliminate entertainment like seeing movies and such because I could not afford to live where I was working. My idea about the swag back in 2003 was that if it existed that it should probably go to people who were able to 1)work with it 2)able to knowlegibly promote it 3)had contributed time and effort.
The involvement at the new image review thing -- as soon as I pasted that logo in the review system at English Wikipedia, the people who had used the nomination process to get approval for the image that was being displayed as the Picture of the Day for 1 June 2008 which was a repeat took over that review system. It makes me question the administration. One of those users erased their talk page which was filled with tutorials and what should have been positive things if the 'administration' of the wiki were being done honestly.
Making movies and then making fun of the people who see them is possibly not the best way to run a world. Making fun of a loquacious girl who really found herself in isolation is sad. And by the way, one of the people who helped to cause that isolation liked that movie(V) much more than I did. They stole her money, if I remember correctly and then just set her 'free' into a world which requires money and did not give any back to her. Kind of a stupid plot when the details of it are looked at closely; as if the people who took the money 'knew' how to handle it better? This scenario is not actually playing itself out that well if this is to be the case.
Anyways, congratulations and mostly, I never had the sense that you were part of the problem here and I appreciate that sense. It should be interesting to see if California could ever come across as an area which is not creatively deprived and destitute of real experience. It will be five years soon and it has not happened yet. -- carol (tomes) 23:06, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Whitelisting[edit]

This - good idea? I think it is very likely the images on these sites comes from elsewhere, so I'd love if we could get a different source for the images. But if not, whitelist the exact URL for the image? – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 18:37, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Admin Questions[edit]

Hello Herby, I was wondering if you could help me when to block someone and how long the duration should be, for example. --Kanonkas(talk) 16:10, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK - bear in mind despite what some people say I'm not the expert I've just been an admin here & there longer than some. Given the fact that I've had the rights here for around 18 months & CU for 12 months something like 1000~ blocks does not seem that much :)
The first block I placed (not here) scared the hell out of me so I asked a crat if I'd got it right - they told me I had not & not that pleasantly... Since then I've learnt some things.
Vandalism by an IP - maybe a day or two up to a week depending how much over what time for a first offence preferably after a warning but you can tell some people will not bother listening. Not there is a link at the bottom of the IP contribs page to their cross wiki record - if you have time, use it, it is useful.
Vandalism by a named user - probably indef without a thought. I'm talking page move, offensive words/pages etc etc. They created the account for one reason alone to me.
Named users not complying with policies. Far harder as I deal with little of it (though more recently). They should have had warnings, they should have had a welcome template - if so a week maybe first. Depending on the outcome the next would be a month or indef based on the volume of the disregard I guess.
Please remember these are purely my thoughts - others will have valid & different views - in the end you probably need to come up with your own guidelines & change them as you learn. Be consistent though. Hope it helps - regards --Herby talk thyme 17:24, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regards Kelson 11:35, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(after ec) There is an ongoing deletion request which seems to me to be likely to be closed as deleted. In practice it seems to me that you were incorrectly removing the speedy deletion tag. That said I will restore the page I think & protect it fully pending the outcome of the deletion request so that no one removes any tags --Herby talk thyme 11:43, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for restoring the page. I have removed the tag, because the deletion reason was not explicitly based on a policy and only for this reason... and in facts, it seems to be impossible for me to get the policy justifying this deletion-request !? If I'm allowed to ask for page deletion only with personal reasons (=not based on a policy)... I have to admit, that is something new... Regards Kelson 11:56, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
However you are a sufficiently experienced Wikimedian to know that the removal of a deletion request tag (a number of times in this case) is wrong. Unfortunately your behaviour may suggest to people that your motives are suspect. Frankly had I not known who you were I would have placed a far stronger warning on your page --Herby talk thyme 11:59, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I really don't want to be agressive nor to impose my views. I just try to explain that my contested views on some point may not be a problem as an admin. Also, I'm just trying to react to what I'm accused of by commenting votes. Isn't that normal? --TwoWings * to talk or not to talk... 14:52, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

indeed and also you should understand that we as administrators are very very busy people we have months of backlogs to deal with and then when we delete something people are like "WHY DID YOU DELETE MY IMAGE YOU IDIOT" and even when we don't delete things we have people going all like "WHY DIDN'T YOU DELETE THIS IMAGE YOU USELESS RETARD" and we get sad at them shouting at us and have to take time to respond to them that and still try and keep our cool and the fact that we have real lives to deal with as well means that sometimes were too busy to capitalise or punctutate or even spell properly like right now i should be outside cleaning the car but i'm not and i havent even had breakfast yet because commons stuff takes priority and im not saying i dont enjoy it but it can just get way WAY too much at times you know so anyway it all just makes us really busy please dont get on his case about this hes a really nice person really hes just very stressed out and doing a very difficult job very well and probably isnt even sleeping right like i go for days and days without getting more than two hours sleep a day and i make up for it with caffeine and nicotine and loud music and then after a few days of that im like BOOM crash and i go for twelve hours or something like that this happened yesterday by the way then i go several more days without sleep anyway have a nice day and please be nice to our admins thank you Lewis Collard! Help![edit]

I tried uploading this file four times, but it doesn't show up on its preview! Can you help? - Amog |Talk 10:13, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Honest answer - no idea. If you click on it it is fine - just no preview. I tried re-uploading it but that didn't work. Could be an svg issue? I could delete it & you try again? Try clearing your cache etc? Try re-editing & re-saving it? --Herby talk thyme 10:20, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I re-edited and saved it three times. Cache-clearing didn't work either. Could this be a resolution issue? - Amog |Talk 10:29, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes there are just these weird glitches & I do know "preview" can be affected. I'd maybe try later/tomorrow - if it still happens try the help desk maybe to see if others have ideas? Sorry not to be more helpful :( --Herby talk thyme 10:37, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem! SVG is weird that way. Go ahead and delete the file. I'll upload it in png. - Amog |Talk 10:41, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks / Request[edit]

Hi Herbythyme! Thanks for renaming me! Recreating and blocking my old username was a good idea. I was wondering if you could do the same thing on the English Wikipedia, where you are an admin as well. Is that ok? Cheers, Face 12:35, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nope - sorry I'm an admin there not a 'crat. Looks to me like you need this page. Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:37, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ehm... I think you misunderstood me. As I said in my request, I had my name changed on the English Wikipedia from Face_zz to Face by means of usurpation. Consequently however, the name Face_zz became available there, so it could be used by vandals to impersonate me (or just to annoy me). Recreating and blocking the name could thus be good idea. While I am able to create an account, I am not able to block it, so I figured I asked you. Is this allowed? Cheers, Face 12:53, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Weird - I always assume that en wp has extensive foolproof etc practices. I guess if they did it for everyone they'd have tooo much work. No idea if I can do it but I have done it :) Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:59, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uncat[edit]

Hi Herbythyme, please dont subst {{Uncat}}, the template is not supposed to be on a page forever ;-). Multichill (talk) 09:35, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not actually sure about that - if you do not subst it you do not get the instructions to remove it after it has been categorised? Given that those instructions exist surely the intention is to subst it? --Herby talk thyme 09:37, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How to use one image you have previously deleted[edit]

Hi, You have deleted one image I had uploaded on Wikipedia

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Log&type=delete&page=Image:Ezana_Stela_large.jpg

The resaon was that the image was created from on an image on Flickr with not the right licence.

The original image can be found here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/herr_hartmann/415941451/ with the corresponding licence: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/2.0/deed.fr

  • Question 1: I have contacted the author of the picture, and he tells me that:
"You can use the photo on wikipedia, that's ok with me, but I wouldn't want to change the license."

Can you tell me how I can do to use this image then?

Is it sufficient with his written permission? Or should I ask him to modify the licence, if so what modifications should be done?

  • Question 2: There are several images I want to upload from Flickr, can you confirm that images showing the following licence are OK for upload on Wikipedia

http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/deed.fr

Regards,

Zheim (talk) 19:36, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For your first question you need to look at getting OTRS licensing I think (I actually undeleted it - another admin deleted it after me). The owner of the photo the contacts us to confirm that using it is acceptable.
For the second question you should find the answer here or ask on the talk page. I am not a licensing expert. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 08:34, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Never really got why renames are a crat only thing I guess - hardly technical/whatever. Some of the grant rights/remove rights issues seem to still be modelled on a much smaller organisation. That said I've a feeling it is the tip of the iceberg as SUL becomes wider known - I'm sure we will get work for a while :) (& if not there is always Meta!). Equally I'm never short of something to do on Commons - plenty of cat work available.
We could do with improving the Lar xlink template with some more info I think - too many people don't really understand? --Herby talk thyme 10:18, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, mind if I ask how a wiki-matrix can proove someone is the owner of an account on another wiki? (or do You mean he has to make that matrix on all wikis he owns?, then I would understand). Please excuse the stupid question, I just don't get it. Btw. if someone has sul, nice way to see which accounts he owns is with vvv's sul util, as You might know already, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 09:55, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well (using Lar's matrix as an example) if there is a link on the matrix to XYWP, for instance, and this person's userpage on XYWP points back to the Wikimatrix, then we have a crosslink there. So that's sorted. If the person comes here and wants to rename in accordance with their XYWP username, and have a link to their matrix on their userpage here (and a link back to this userpage from the matrix), then we don't need to worry about asking for a diff from XYWP as we already "have" one. That's my thought process - does it make sense?
The SUL tool is a good idea which I hadn't thought of, but will keep bookmarked. Thanks! :) giggy (:O) 10:03, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see, ok, if he backlinks I understands the idea. Thanks for the clarification :) best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 10:07, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, obviously it (and all other crosslink methods) are useless unless we have a link coming from both wikis. This just makes it easier in the long run if you're going to be doing it regularly. giggy (:O) 10:16, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) Yes I do use the SUL tool anyway (though possibly for other reasons too :)). My views on the matrix would be similar to giggy's - not perfect but useful I guess. Happy to learn & have other suggestions though --Herby talk thyme 10:08, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, no can't think of better ways :'( (only one, but this would not work in this world) however if someone gives a Matrix, I guess You have to check the diff of the backlink though :S --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 11:12, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK - first bit - the {{Delh}} template was still at the top (now removed). Second bit - I put it back in the June 2 listings (transcluded the page). I'll comment/vote a bit later. Follow the edits before this if you want to see more. Hope that is ok - cheers --Herby talk thyme 11:05, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thanks. There does seem something odd about those templates, as it's not the first time that I have been unable to see the {{Delh}} code at the top. I deleted the {{Delf}}, but there was no {{Delh}} to delete. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 16:06, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is due to section editing. If you edit the section (rather than the page) then you won't see delh, as it is above the section heading. You have to edit the whole page instead. Confusing, I know. – Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 23:29, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, obvious really! Thanks for clarifying that. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 09:51, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I've botched a few of these too, if you use the sidebar automation it will just add the new request at the bottom of the page. I think that's actually OK, but maybe the old request should be surrounded in show/hides or something. on en:wp the new request gets its own page but I think that's because it's done by hand. ++Lar: t/c 10:27, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Undeleting image talk page[edit]

Hi. I was wondering if you could please undelete Image talk:Primordial nucleosynthesis.JPG. You'de deleted it as "Page is test, spam, vandalism or bot created:". It was actually en:LaTeX code that could/should be used instead of the image. Thanks /Lokal_Profil 23:16, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No worries. Random code looks like rubbish for the casual observer =) /Lokal_Profil 09:17, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Herbythyme. I ask you, as a Commons administrator and bureaucrat, to look into the actual legal basis of this template. The trouble is that the template is based on the Agreement on succession issues between Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Republic of Croatia, the Republic of Macedonia, the Republic of Slovenia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which does not seem to deal with regulating public domain issues of the former Yugoslavia (SFRY). It entirely refers to the shares of the above new states to inherit the rights and interests of the former SFRY, including the rights for having an access to the former SFRY State archives. The law defines the former SFRY State archives within the time period between 1st December, 1918, and 30th June, 1991. What is most important, I don't see any statement of this law that would permit to use freely any former Yugoslav state symbols and signs or to move them to the public domain, with no copyright coverage. Now we can see that this template is erroneously used to download many images of former Yugoslav flags, coats of arms, banknotes, stamps and even photographs. I ask you to fix this problem or, if this is not a straightforward administrator action, to advise on the appropriate way to fix the problem. Thank you. --Michael Romanov (talk) 06:31, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Water, water everywhere...[edit]

I was looking for a halfway decent illustration of an estuary... and as usual the geographical cat:s are in a mess and the UK geo cat:s in a special mad place of their own (BTW Category:Volcanoes of the United Kingdom is one of my particular faves). Strangely, although practically everything that can be catt:ed by country is, Category:Bodies of water isn't. I'd suggest Category:Bodies of water by country, etc. But anything to tidy up the "waters of the earth" which are "without form and void", would probably be a good thing! Man vyi (talk) 12:22, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, un alpha for "of Eng.", "of Wales", "of Scot." and "of NI" makes sense within "of UK". Man vyi (talk) 12:39, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

In response to this commment, yes, this project was getting on my nerves when I wrote that. I didn't hate it, that was just an exaggeration. After some thinking though, I've found that Commons is plenty big enough to be able to contribute without getting in the way of people you don't get on with. You, for example, seem to have stopped the strictness on RfAs and double standards, which is good. I'm not entirely sure what went wrong with us two; perhaps it was that I feel so strongly about fairness in the RFA process it caused me to cancel our friendship, but I'm sorry for anything I said which offended you. I hope we can be friends again. Majorly talk 11:44, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In effect, as an image source it shouldn't be cat:ted in cat:s Ireland and United Kingdom, I'd have thought. Every image should be appropriately cat:ted. Of course it's easy to say "should"...... Man vyi (talk) 13:23, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tour de Suisse external links[edit]

I've noticed that you deleted an external link to the non-commercial site steephill.tv and replaced with a link to the commercial site l cyclingfans. Why? The steephill.tv Tour de Suisse Dashboard is very relevant to the page. By the way, over the last year, steephill.tv has sent over 50,000 visitors to wikipedia via many links on its pages —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.102.87.234 (talk • contribs) 02:26, 20 Jun 2008 (UTC)

I'll look at the commercial site in due course (which wiki is it on - you placed your link on so many). The fact that you are so pleased with the traffic merely confirms to me that your interest in Wikipedia is related to the traffic it generates for your website. I would advise you not to place the link again or it may well be blacklisted across all wikis --Herby talk thyme 07:09, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the page I'm referring to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_de_Suisse. I mentioned the traffic number to give you an indication that steephill.tv feeds back to wikipedia. It sends a lot more traffic to wikipedia than vice-versa. Ie. it shares the love. I won't add back the Tour de Suisse wiki link but why did you remove it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.102.87.234 (talk • contribs) 09:08, 20 Jun 2008 (UTC)

That link has gone, thanks. The problem is that you placed links across several wikis so it is the behaviour of placing links and making no other contributions that is one of the issues. Equally you are using Foundation sites to improve your traffic (we do generate enough of our own without much help). On Wikipedia specifically you are in breach of [[w:WP:COI|conflict of interest] policies by linking to a site you are involved with. --Herby talk thyme 09:24, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Herbythyme, I have a non-trivial problem with this image I've uploaded some time ago and need some guidance and/or assistance. There exists an original drawing by Daniel Grose (1766-1838) which is without doubt PD because of its age. I learnt first of this drawing through the book by Roche (cited within the current description of this image) and, as it appeared from the description of this book to be a faithful reproduction of the original, I felt free to upload it using a {{PD-Art}} template. Roche didn't have access to the original drawing but to a volume edited by Roger Stalley that reproduced all the drawings by Daniel Grose, published in 1991. Recently, I was able to buy an antiquarian copy of this book and learnt through this volume that Roche's image is not faithful, i.e. the original by Daniel Grose is a painting and the image published by Roche is not a photographic reproduction but something that has been newly drawn quite close to its original.

I would like now to replace the image at Commons with the more faithful photographic reproduction I scanned from Roger Stalley's volume. It would be for two reasons: Firstly because it is obviously of better quality and secondly as my first upload could be an unwanted copyright violation. As long as we have a faithful two-dimensional photographic reproduction we are apparently free to use it. However in case of a new hand-made drawing that is just based on an attempt to be faithful, I am no longer that sure. Unfortunately there was no hint in the book by Roche that made me aware of this trap.

I see two possible approaches: The current image could be simply deleted and I upload the new faithfully reproduced one as quickly as possible. Or alternatively, I do not wait until it gets deleted but simply upload a new version for it. Because of the possible copyright violation, however, it would be necessary then to get rid of the older version. The latter method would have the advantage that we would get a smooth transition in the two wikipedias (en+de) that are currently using it. In any case, I would like to keep the current name for the new image. What do you think? Thanks for your support, AFBorchert (talk) 06:31, 20 June 2008 (UTC) P.S. You'll find a copy of the to-be-uploaded image here. --AFBorchert (talk) 06:46, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thinking it over I would go for uploading a new one & overwriting the existing possible copyright violation. When you have done that I can delete the possible copyvio. If/when it is resolved the current version can be re-uploaded with another name. This way no wikis who are using the image will be disrupted.
Hope that this helps & let me know what else I can do - thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 07:07, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Aren't we having fun today :) Thanks Carol for the revert too. Quite funny really as each time they create a new account I get to find the IP which so far have been open proxies which I'm blocked, ho hum --Herby talk thyme 12:04, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Beat me to it[edit]

You move fast for a senior admin, are you using one of these? Finn Rindahl (talk) 16:28, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Senior maybe but not ruined yet. There are no such things as slow vandal fighters :) --Herby talk thyme 18:14, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That was a very nice pic! Certainly better than the one I linked to ;o) Finn Rindahl (talk) 18:45, 20 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your question[edit]

Hi Herby,
thanks for your confidence.[2] Sorry for answering late, but I was mostly offline Commons since 18th. If you consider me worthy for admin tools on Commons you may nominate me. Though I can't promise constant high intensity activity, I am interested to continue the necessary "meta" work on Commons. --Túrelio (talk) 22:31, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For the "hunter"[3] ;-)

Thanks for supporting my RfA. --Túrelio (talk) 15:55, 29 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OSTM protection no longer needed[edit]

Are you able to un-protect images like Image:OSTM-06.jpg this one which should be in Category:Ocean Surface Topography Mission? -- carol (talk) 06:54, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Carol - still appears to be in use on en wp so I'll not unprotect it but I have added it to the category. Thanks & regards --Herby talk thyme 08:55, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The last time I looked, there was a hurricane there instead. It was a disappointing evening here. I was looking for an image of the first Delta II that was launched in 1989 and there seems to be only one image and it is not on a govt site and too small to verify that it is the rocket they said it was. I might have seen the trail from the recent launch though. Thanks for doing that. My physics teacher said that a rocket without a payload is -- I can't remember what he said it was but I will just let you fill in the rest of that.... -- carol (talk) 09:28, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The Main Page I see is displaying this: en:Image:08 0157 UTC .jpg. It doesn't matter, I guess. -- carol (talk) 09:36, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
File:Charon plutoface.png
Also, not protected.
I am going to ramble here a little, if you don't mind. They are also displaying an image of Charon, Plutos moon. It looks like a mirrored disco dance ball. Pluto and Charon actually dance together as they go around the sun. The way that the moon always has one face to us -- if you are on the moon, you should be able to see the earth rotate. Or, another way, while on the moon, there is no dark side of the earth. Pluto and Charon are equals in movement and always have the same side facing each other -- never showing the other their dark side.
The thirty degree temperature difference might have melted my brains some today. Sorry for the ramble.... -- carol (talk) 09:43, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Strike all of that about the dark side -- no reason to bring the sun and the Floyd into that. Sorry, I will talk page ban myself for a while from here now.... -- carol (talk) 09:49, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hey The Floyd (& you) are welcome here :) --Herby talk thyme 10:07, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protection/overwritten image question[edit]

Is protecting this image against the larger goals of being a host that serves images to encyclopedias? -- \mathbf{C} 20:08, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for deletion[edit]

Hi! I would like you to remove my file: Image:JCWW unknown grave.jpg coz it has the wrong name. Other Wikimedian recognized this grave and now "unknown grave" is highly unsuitable :) Of course I uploaded this file again with the new name (here). Thanks in advance & Regards, Patrol110 dyskusja 07:31, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorted, cheers --Herby talk thyme 07:39, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks :) Patrol110 dyskusja 07:40, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adhoc[edit]

I agree, but I figure I'll give him 24h to change, then go stone age on him. -mattbuck (Talk) 08:23, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Great images[edit]

Good day Herby, I just wanted to leave a note for your beautiful contributions of images :) Keep it going! Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 13:43, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot - appreciated. Time is one of the main issues I have but I've just uploaded this which I like quite a bit! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 14:22, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion[edit]

Hi there, you recently deleted an image I uploaded. Having read about the image scope I'm still none the wiser as to why it was deleted. Would you be able to clarify for me why it was deleted please? BigbluePD (talk) 12:03, 25 June 2008 (UTC) Great, thanks for clearing that up. I'll try and keep my n00bishness to myself in future! BigbluePD (talk) 12:18, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Thank you very much for your comments. I'll take a break: the external harassment I'm suffering makes it very hard to stay calmed. Regards. --Dodo (talk) 12:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
