First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

The speedy tag was probably removed by the author who did not wanted to have his spam page removed. If you see the page recreated, please leave me a message, I will then block the user. -- Bryan (talk to me) 10:45, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great work there! I can often see you've been there before me. :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:00, 23 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator?[edit]

I noticed that you're monitoring new page creation. I think administrator's tools will be helpful to you for. May be you'll be interested in nomination? --EugeneZelenko 18:24, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your posting on my page (& for noticing!). I really am in two minds about this - I have thought carefully I assure you (I have even read the requirements page!). As an Admin (with checkuser rights) on Wikibooks I have a reasonable understanding of what is required but I feel that my knowledge of Commons procedures & policies is not good. However I am now looking at other areas such as uncategorised pages so I will learn more. I have prejudices - vandals & spam being the main ones but you should know that I am not a fan of policy either! I am not good at languages but I might get by in French. Looking at the admin list you are an experienced member of the community, if you feel that it would be in the interests of the community and acceptable I would accept nomination. I have no reservations about actually using the tools (although I do have a reputation for being hard on vandals). If you have any questions for me I will happily answer them - regards & thanks --Herby talk thyme 10:30, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I any case you could use your admin tools only in areas where you're feeling comfortable. Most dangerous area - file deletion (since CheckUsage is not working stable), so you could just avoid it for awhile.
As for languages, nobody expect you to know many languages. You could use Commons:Message templates, which already contains translations to many languages. And admins who knows other languages could always help you.
As person, who deleted many page nominated by you, I didn't see any big mistakes in this area. You could definitely do deletion yourself.
EugeneZelenko 15:41, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK - if you wish to nominate me, my thanks --Herby talk thyme 15:54, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Welcoming[edit]

Hey, please {{Welcome}} users if you notice they don't have a welcome message when you write to them. Also if they already have some warnings, but no welcome, it would be good to insert a welcome at the top. thanks, pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:27, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's ok, no biggie! BTW, if you use IRC, you should jump on #wikimedia-commons sometime. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:34, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the advice, Herby. I will follow it right away, and hopefully by noon today the site will be more in keeping with standard format. Please do continue to monitor it and let me know if I'm getting it done right. I would appreciate that. Thank you again for your help. Scott--Rskellner 14:45, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again. I have now restructured the format of the page, and I want to repeat my thanks to you for bringing this to my attention. I have a question that you might be able to help me with. You will see a few blank pages in the gallery. These are for photos that I had uploaded in English Wiki, but not in Commons. Yesterday morning I tagged those photos with "Move to Commons" but nothing happened. Can they automatically be moved into Category:Friedrich Kellner here in Commons, or must I upload them separately? The files are Image:Fred Kellner 1946.jpg, Image:Robert Scott Kellner in 1960.jpg, and Image:American Legion Tomb Paris 1953 .jpg. Sorry to keep you so busy, but I am grateful for the help. Scott --Rskellner 15:56, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I went to the link you suggested. I have uploaded the photos into Commons, because that seems to be the best way. I also followed the method of including summations from the various Friedrich Kellner pages in the other seven languages (these summations also appear in the Category). Let me know if other changes would make the Gallery article better. Thanks. Scott --Rskellner 17:24, 13 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Herby, after studying the format for gallery pages, and after looking at dozens of other gallery pages, I have now finished the Friedrich Kellner page. It is somewhat more "artsy" than most of the other gallery pages, but that's because I took advange of the main statement in the FAQ:
  • "Galleries are a complement to categories, as another way of displaying media. They allow files to be annotated with captions, shown at better sizes than the category default, organised in tables, etc."
Please take one last look at the page to verify that it is okay, particularly with the way I showed some of the photos "at better sizes than the category default." I'm afraid I may be accused of going overboard, but I believe I've stayed within the rules. If not, I will change things again. Just let me know.
Thank you very much. Scott --Rskellner 04:38, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the final check, Herby. I am glad that you like it. I must admit it was a lot of work, but I feel content with the end result. I was only concerned that I might have gone too far with the creation of some of the larger photos. But it seems to be more of a real art gallery with them in place. As interest continues to develop in the historical importance of the diary, I am sure the gallery will get visitors. I am glad you brought my attention to the need for restructuring the page. The whole concept of Wikipedia and Wikimedia with volunteer editors is a great one. Scott --Rskellner 14:24, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Herbythyme/Arc1, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other SYSOPS, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Re: Voting validity[edit]

Are you joking, PLEASE steal my job! ;) I was only doing it because I was worried if they stay there for a long time, other people will think they're valid votes, so only to try and encourage people to follow the instructions carefully. anyway good stuff :). --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 00:57, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I did post talk page messages when the diff was invalid, but only because I did a bunch all at once, so I gave them all the same message. And since it was the same day I thought some might be around. It's nice I think, especially when they try (like linking to their userpage, but not a diff), but not obligatory...
And your help is still appreciated all the same :)--pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:55, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think the deletions are problematic. Would you mind if I undelete the images and go through the regular COM:DEL process? --Cat out 15:06, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hum - I was wondering when that message was going to arrive. Firstly - of course you can undelete them - I'd give you a hand but I'm out of time for an hour or two.
Actual licensing - after having re-read round the situation I think I understand your concern. My view in deleting them (FWIW) was that they were a form of copvio and while the license couldn't be revoked (?) it may not have been valid in the first place (I don't know where any external evidence of the license came from?).
I am sorry if I have created any undue work - all I can say is I do hope I will learn from this. Hope this is ok --Herby talk thyme 15:25, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
+maybe - undelete one as a "test" case?? --Herby talk thyme 15:26, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I do not have a real opinion on the actual case. But I feel it is complicated enough to disqualify as a speedy.
As per your comment, I'll be undeleting them pending a com:del review
I do not believe you have made a "mistake". The talk page post was to merely avoid a posible wheel war. :)

Well, if you're about to delete an image as a duplicate, you can tell orgullobot to replace it. The syntax is {{universal replace|Image_to_be_deleted.jpg|Image_to_replace_it.jpg}}. It doesn't replace jpg\gif\png with SVG's at the moment though. Remember to check with checkusage that orgullobot actually replaced the old image with the new one in all instances as very often it misses it on some wikipedias, although I hope someone will fix it soon. A request to the Commons administrator[edit]

Hello. I am Riva72 who is the author and the uploader of the photos: [1], [2], [3], [4], [5] and [6].

I would appreciate if you allowed me the following changes I would like to make in the licensing/file information boxes of the photos linked above:

1. Remove personal data due to the recent deletion of my user page (for which I asked the proper administrator) and substitute them with the nickname Riva.
2. Remove the sentence from the permission section. I want it display the following information: see below.

I know my Riva72 access is blocked. I am strongly convinced it was the unjust action of the user Warx. Leaving it apart.. recently, I have found the solution to the whole unpleasant affair. I believe it is the best solution available and it will put the end to the warring at least on my side. You are the Commons administrator so you have all the rights which are necessary to hear me and unblock me.. or make administrative suggestions.

The Riva's request

  • Herby, believe the whole issue is complicated. I nominated 'the castle in Podhorce' article for a deletion because they were so rude to remove my attribution (to the author of the photos) in the form of the dedication. I still regard this removal as the act of a hideous vandalism. I then removed the photos and then (as it turned out that I was deprived all the rights as the author of the article and the authorized uploader of the photos by my Friend Oksana) I modified them (to which I have rights) because our intention was: the photos will not illustrate the vandalised (destorted) article. I am blocked at the Polish Wikipedia for altering these images as well.. I suffer the double punishment..! My version of the article failed. Let it be.. The version which, finally, prevailed is hideous for us for many reasons (and not only for the lack of the attribution/dedication). The actions of some Polish Wikipedians, including some of the administrators are hideous, too. I and the author of the photos do not wish to identify with the Polish Wikipedia. When my blockade is finished there I will seek my user- and my discussion pages removed there. Another reason for which I no longer wish to identify with the Polish Wikipedia is the fact that I really see myself as the good author, which was pointed e.g. by the user Ejdzej.. Why cannot you accept and respect my decision..? I wish to remove six photos but I uploaded to the Commons about 60 photos.. And even I did not want to withdraw them but prohibit the Polish Wikipedia to use six photos of the castle in Podhorce. They, fortunately, have other photos to choose from which they can illustrate the remnants of the article with..

The action of changes these licences was not the malicious actions to withdraw the photos from the Commons. Let me explain my decision in a humorous way. I hope you do not mind that way.

  • The arguments presented below are my, Riva72's answers to Ejdzej's words which I quote: Instead of writting deletion request, Riva72 started to change CC license tags to NonDerivative version, which has "speedy delete" effect. WarX issued a blockade. I will not trust Riva72 again. A.J. 07:48, 4 April 2007 (UTC) - [7].
1.Speedy deletion is also a deletion request!
2.I made no attempt to withdraw the photos from the Commons depository. I released them under the different licence to which I have rights (as the author and the authorised uploader). It is not my fault that this licence disqualifies the photos from being deposited with the Commons. It is the fault of the Commons policy.
3. Information which may be read in the appeal section of the speedy delete template: If you disagree with its speedy deletion, change this tag to a regular deletion request using the 'delete' template and list it on Commons:Deletion requests#Recent discussions so it can be discussed.

I understood and I accepted the fact that I could not change the licences previously granted to the Commons to 'nd' versions. That is why I have this final request for you, the Commons administrator.

The request by Riva72

  • I ask you, the Commons administrator, to unblock my access to the Commons and then I will perform the actions which I will explain below. I would appreciate if these actions of mine WERE RESPECTED at the Commons! After that, I will ask you to remove my IP-user page and my Commons discussion pages (IP's and personal) and do some deletions with the photo files history in order to keep only the current file versions (I will provide you with the proper links) and after that, I will no upload any photos to the Commons and post no messages in the future. I will retire from the Commons forever.. If I broke this agreement you might freely block me indefinitely. Please, respond..
1. I will place the templates: Copyrighted free use provided that|The Polish Wikipedia project is prohibited by the author of this photo to use this file and its derivatives. (the template [8] to the set of six photos (marked: Image:Caspod1.gif to Image:Caspod6.gif). The Polish Wikipedia may use the Image:Caspod7.gif and Image:Caspod8.gif.
2. I will change the licences of some of my photos to the licence of cc-by-2.5. For example this file: [9]. All from 'PD-self' to 'cc-by-2.5'.

Respond, please.. I would appreciate your honest answer. Thank you.

I am sorry for the words and actions which may have appeared rude to some people but (sometimes) ideas cannot be expressed the gentle way. --213.199.192.60 18:45, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A request[edit]

Herby, this is me (Riva72) again. I have to ask you for your administrative assistance and your advice. 1. Please remove/delete all the previous histories of the files listed at my deletion-request page: [10] and leave only the current file versions. Some of the previous histories of the files contain personal data which I wish to remove as my Riva72's user-page was deleted (which I requested for). 2. Please advice me how to ask for the allowance of placing a template to the set of eight photos. Am I to make 'the deletion request page' for them and place there this request of mine? I mean the photos named Image:Caspod1.gif to Image:Caspod8.gif'. I would love to perform the following action:

  • E.g. Image:Caspod1.gif - I want to change the template from: 'cc-by-2.5' to [11] with the information that: The Polish Wikipedia project is prohibited by the author of this photo to use this file and its derivatives.
Can such a change be done to the photos released into the public domain? ('PD-self' licence)?

OK. These are three questions. I hope you do not mind them. Please respond to me or give me the administrator name who is capable of giving me the detailed answer.

I inform you that I will not remove or modify my deletion request at [12] and will place no comments/explanations if not necessary.

Have a good evening. --213.199.192.60 18:59, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re: RfX/inactivity[edit]

Hey,

I suggest the best way to do it is create a poll with several alternatives, including one that represents the current situation. Or just created Commons:Administrators/Deadminship and put {{Proposed}} at the top, we advertise it for a while, no major complaints, it becomes policy.

We could take this as an opportunity to overhaul our adminship process and switch to a "confirmation" type deal as I think Meta and Wikisource have, where you have your position confirmed yearly. But it's a bit of a pain. In one sense we don't want to encourage too much carry-on with this meta-business; we don't want to stop people going about their core business of uploading and sorting etc. And we don't want to encourage too much reverence and veneration of admins by making it a "big deal" of course.

We need to distinguish between types of activity. At the moment "activity" means "editing activity". I would prefer it to mean "admin activity". But I don't feel it's necessary that bcrats and CUs meet "bcrat activity" and "CU activity" requirements. Especially as their tasks are not so regular and ongoing as admin/general editing, and are more needed just as the situation arises.

So my preference is:

  • all human janitorial positions must meet janitorial activity requirements. Janitorial includes admin, bureaucrat and CU actions (AFAIK there is no way for non-CUs to see CU activity anyway - is there?). i.e. it is not necessary that bcrats and CUs show they are using those tools, but they should show use of the admin tools at least.

For policy changes to be convincing we also need a strong rationale. Why must the policy be changed? what is wrong with the status quo? is it actually harmful or damaging? (what damage is done by having the tools and not using them?) or are we just updating it to reflect changed community opinion? or are we nitpicking? [note: avoid the last :)]

Finally I strongly feel that any change in policy like this can not be enacted for people who have already become admins unless they choose to accept it (and they are under no pressure to do so).

There's my thoughts, have fun --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:34, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just to re-emphasise: it's important that adminship is considered no big deal, and a tool to assist in wiki maintenance rather than a way to gain status in the community. All changes to adminship policy should be made with this view in mind: how can we encourage more people to take on trusted maintenance positions? how would this new policy seem to someone who signed up last week? Would it seem like the people in power huddling closer together away from the masses, or encouraging others to join them? Be conscious of assumptions that the way more established wikis do things, is the only way to do things or even the best way to do things. Be conscious that our users come from hundreds of projects which have hundreds of ways of doing things. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 10:40, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I thought you were volunteering to help me (or prodding me to) draft a policy change. Don't feel any obligation to propose anything, if you don't want to. :) But I don't see at all how proposing a policy change in the manner I described may "annoy people". Such people, I suspect, doth protest too much. :) Certainly you might be putting forward an idea that is open to criticism and rejection. Wikis need such people who are prepared to lead debate and policy forward, and risk some ego in the meantime. cheers --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:02, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re: Ari Gold[edit]

I am the editor in chief of the magazine and I gave a written permission to use the cover of the magazine for any use. I wrote in Italian because when I did it, the theory went that Italian editors would look after uploads and licenses from Italian contributors. If an English traqnsltion can help, I shall add it. The italian permission was filed by the Italian wikipedia. Thank you for asking. --G.dallorto 21:05, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I translated it. If you think it would be a better solution, I can move the picture to Wikipedia Italy, and let the copy on Commons to be deleted (the image is used in Wikipedia Italy). There are more and more images that do not fit with Common's requeiements that are uploaded in Wikipedia Italy alone, so it's nothing unheard of. Best wishes. --G.dallorto 11:56, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

re:orphan[edit]

No problem :-), there are only 1800 talks, in it.wiki I have deleted 6000 orphan talk pages, good works :-P --dario vet (talk) 19:26, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What does it mean? Or what is it referring to? --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:56, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I know where it goes, but why "salt"? Why not "PAR"? What is the reference? --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:19, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm waiting for you to do more work on that page. :) I'm not about to! --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:44, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, though I decide not to be an admin now, I think that the page is useful for me when I request for it later, can you please move to a page under User:Chanueting and speedy delete later? Chanueting 11:53, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with tags[edit]

Hi, could you please take a look at User:Javier_Donoso? He's uploading images from Gibson.com as PD-self. He did that yesterday too, and a lot of his images were deleted after I notified an admin about it on IRC, but he's at it again (and I don't have IRC access at the moment). Thanks! --JoanneB 08:13, 23 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedydelete[edit]

Hi Herby, Just wondering if I can have your opinion on the following at Commons:Help desk - "Merlin-UK Can you help please" / User talk:Merlin-UK. I have been talking to Merlin-UK, and there are about 70 pictures that are duplicate uploads. He has given a list of files to be deleted. Now, to mark them as duplicates, he has been advised to put in the tag duplicate + the filename of the other file. This will take a long time. I propose to just put the speedydelete tag on them, and get them off the system. Is this OK? Or does the community really need the duplicate tag + other filename (in which case they probably won't get deleted as I/he dread spending all that time). Thanks for your input. Sorted! Thanks for your help once again :) Deadstar 12:18, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is this a deleted catagory? I have some images for which this catagory would be appropriate. - Leonard G. 03:51, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
