Nova

Hi, there are two images uploaded the same way. When I put my imagine, this looks like this: [1]. Why?--Baku (talk) 00:13, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

@Baku: Renamed to File:SantaMariaNova 2017.jpg. Now it should work. The local filename has priority over the filename on Commons; that's why the wrong image showed up on IT-wiki. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:17, 19 November 2017 (UTC)
By the way: Could you please add categories to your pictures? Thanks!! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:19, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

Ok, I did it.--Baku (talk) 00:22, 19 November 2017 (UTC)

My Photograph of Paisley Park

Hi, and thanks for replying. I don't think the photograph should appear on Wikipedia, since I was not given prior authorization. I was 19 years old at the time I took the photograph and at home from college on my first spring break. I was taking many photographs of places I used to frequent or that had a special significance to my life before returning to college in upstate New York. As I was driving home that day after taking photographs in and around my hometown, I noticed the sky was magnificent above Prince's studio, Paisley Park (note that I did not know it was also Prince's home at the time). I then noticed the gates to his studio were open, which was uncommon (also note that I lived about a mile away from Paisley Park in a neighborhood on the same road since I was a young child). On this day, being a freshman in college, I did not see anything wrong with driving into the parking lot to take a good photograph of the studio for Wikipedia. I spent maybe 10 minutes trying to get at least one photograph as perfect as possible before leaving respectfully. When I got home several minutes later, I uploaded what I thought was an almost perfect photograph to Wikipedia. I had photographed other important places to Wikipedia for the previous 3-4 years. I deleted many, if not all, of these photographs a few years later. While I think this photograph is good artistically, I don't think it belongs on the Wikimedia Commons or Wikipedia because of my unauthorized entrance to Prince's studio and home. I hope you can understand my predicament. I am willing to discuss this matter with you further if necessary.

Sincerely,

Nick Scribner

My image has been deleted

Dear Hedwig,

I got the message: 02:55, 11 November 2017 Hedwig in Washington (talk | contribs) deleted page File:Ecoreach logo.jpg (Copyright violation: complex logo) (global usage; delinker log)

That image is not copyright violated. It is the logo of the organization that I am writing the wiki page. Could you please help me to restore the image.

many thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ecoreach (talk • contribs) 03:08, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

@Ecoreach: The logo is above Com:TOO. We require the copyright holder to send permission, see OTRS. If everything checks out, we restore the file. Best, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:38, 11 November 2017 (UTC)

Right. I was relying on this edit a month and a half ago, but @Guanaco: may have had second thoughts.   — Jeff G. ツ 22:18, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
@Jeff G. and Guanaco: No, that was on my own accord. I just noticed the vandalism, Guanaco wasn't online, so I protected the page. Page is open for vandalism again. \S/ --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:26, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Deleting my images

Hello you , why did you deleted me those images :

  • File:Brenda dhomës.jpg
  • File:Tarraca e shtëpisë.jpg
  • File:Muahmer1.jpg
  • File:Shtëpia nga këndi perëndimor.jpg
  • File:Pamje e shtëpisë nga para.jpg

They are on the available on the web as well. You need to follow the instructions here: OTRS. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:10, 15 November 2017 (UTC)
Yeah but the images you deleted to me i made it with my hand and i uploaded them 1 year ago , i didn't do a copyright from the chrome or another web page.. User:Zmarlind5 22:55 , 15 November 2017 (CET)
(talk page stalker) This is grounds for COM:UD, per COM:AGF. @Hedwig in Washington: Did you check whether the instances of these photos you found online were previous to the Commons uploads? -- Tuválkin 00:42, 16 November 2017 (UTC)
@Zmarlind5 and Tuvalkin: This was my mistake, sorry. I restored the images, added the correct license (PD-Kosos-Gov, because it's where those files are to be found), added categories and created a new category for the village: Category:Prilepnica. Again, I am sorry for making this blunder. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:17, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Might be. Who photographed the plates? Com:DW. Anyway, the picture is on the web, our rules require that you follow OTRS. Another question: Why is this picture in project scope? Commons is not a place to advertise blogs. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:59, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Dear Hedwig,

You deleted a few pictures because you though copyright was breached. It wasn't and I informed you already that I had permission. The copyright holder actually emailed his standard release form to Commons. Still, it was removed and I can't get them back on the web. Now that the owner emailed his per mission (last Monday 13 Nov 17) can you please put them back again. I tried to do that myself and then the system says that the pictures were never deleted, but If I try to insert them, they are...

I'm fed up with being handled like s**t to be honest, while trying to improve wiki and giving away pictures for free... All the non-response does not help.

Best, Qudz --Qudz (talk) 15:07, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

@Qudz: Yes, copyright can be a bitch sometimes. The problem here is that we don't know if you are the artist himself. We have no way to verify it, that's why we have the OTRS system implemented. Please have a look at OTRS and follow the guidelines. We do have a backlog, so it may take some time to process. If everything checks out ok, the files will be restored. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:23, 16 November 2017 (UTC)

Dear :@Hedwig in Washington: This is incredible, how often must I explain that I am not the artist (copyright holder), but that I received his permission, that the artist (copyright holder) forwarded this permission to Commons, but that it seems impossible to get pictures on a wiki page? It is not that copyright is a bitch, it is that new contributors are not taken seriously by actually reading what they have to say. You could have helped me better by reading a bit more thoroughly, advise me and then it would have saved us both a lot of time. Anyway, not even worth the hustle any more.--Qudz (talk) 12:26, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

@Qudz: You never told me that you are NOT the copyright holder. If the copyright holder did send a valid permission, the files will be restored. I'm sorry you feel neglected, it is difficult to actually help everybody. Please remember that we are all volunteers here. Do you happen to know the OTRS ticket number? --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:17, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

Micaela Monterosso

Hello Hedwig, btw of this user that you blocked for unfree material, the poor one is the wife of the person pictured, she just doesn't know the rules of Commons. She's actually the graphic designer of her husband's CD cover and wanted to post a picture she made but made a mess with the licence. (and of course she thought that the problem was that a photo from Facebook couldn't be uploaded but from Flickr could...) :D -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 16:45, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

@Blackcat: Done. Thanks for looking out for her, I rather like the photograph. I'll restore it and add {{OTRS pending}}. Would you be so nice to instruct the lady how to use OTRS? I added a few categories as well. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:11, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
I'll tell her. Possibly I'll suggest her to take less uncontroversial photographs and to upload them on commons prior to publish them anywhere else. -- SERGIO (aka the Blackcat) 14:24, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
@Blackcat: Sounds good. I overshot the goal a little, I think. Anyway, if they have a webpage (I didn't find one) they can always post the photographs there and show a CC-license, like underneath or so. Thanks for your help! As usual. :-) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 22:04, 18 November 2017 (UTC)

Deletions of original music files

Hi... I just realized that five files that one of my students from Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey, have been deleted. , , , , . I need to know what we (Wiki Learning Tec de Monterrey) can do to remedy this situation. We do a lot of multimedia work and need music in appropriate licenses. Lucky for us, we have sound recording and engineering students who can help us with this. If you need an OTRS letter, I can arrange this. Thank you!Thelmadatter (talk) 18:37, 17 November 2017 (UTC)

@Thelmadatter: The problem was that a colleague tagged the files for lacking permission and the uploader didn't react within a given timeframe (7 days). It needs to be specified who wrote the music and therefore (usually) holds the copyright. We require this for all media on Commons. Sending permission using OTRS is a good idea, but the permission has to be send by the copyright holder. Hope it helps. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:18, 18 November 2017 (UTC)
Please let me see if I understand this correctly. The uploader is the author of the music and of the interpretation (recording). Does he need simply to indicate this in the description? If so, how can this be done if the file has been erased? Can he reupload? I am hoping I can get him to do this as he is in finals and graduates in a couple of weeks. He has already gotten his school credit for this project.Thelmadatter (talk) 16:16, 21 November 2017 (UTC)
@Thelmadatter: Let's cut through red tape and bureaucracy. I need to have something in hand so that I can verify the case:
COM:CONSENT redirects here. For information about consent to deal with photographs of people, see Commons:Photographs of identifiable people.

If you have been directed to this page because you wish to release the rights to a file to which you own the copyright, please consider clicking on the link above rather than completing the following email template. The Interactive Release Generator is designed to make the process of releasing the rights to a file efficient and simple. The use of the following template, though still perfectly valid and certainly useful as a work of reference, is now discouraged and should only be used in exceptional circumstances. Thank you!

Email message template for release of rights to a file

We receive a large number of email messages from copyright holders wishing to allow Wikipedia to reuse their content (messages such as, "I allow Wikipedia to reuse my photos", etc.). Unfortunately, such statements are insufficient from a legal standpoint: we require a more specific declaration of consent to accept your permission. The following template will allow you to produce such a declaration.

  • Before you send us any email message, ensure that you've removed all the red instructions from the template.
  • Replace the template text (such as name) with your own details, and remove all of the brackets and footnotes.

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites.

I am aware that the copyright holder always retains ownership of the copyright as well as the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by the copyright holder.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

  1. The words "media work" should be chosen for cases where the "medium" is also the "work", e.g., a photograph of a sunset or a person, an original digital drawing, diagram, or map, a sound recording of a bird, the text of a web page, etc., but not a photograph of another person's copyrighted painting or a sound recording of a person playing a flute or pronouncing a series of words, for which see below.
  2. The words "work depicted in the media" mean, for example, the case of a digital photograph (the medium) of an artistic sculpture (the work) where the sculptor did not take the photograph but is the individual here making the licensing statement.
  3. The words, "both the work depicted and the media" mean those instances when the person making the statement is the copyright owner of the thing depicted (e.g., the sculpture, the oil painting, the particular musical performance, the reading of a monologue from Hamlet) as well as the owner of the medium in which it is being provided (e.g., the photograph of it, the movie clip in which it appears, the Photoshop drawing of it, the sound clip containing it).
  4. You must clearly identify the content that you're permitting us to use. A statement such as "I am creator of the images used on XYZ page" is NOT sufficient. You must provide exact URL link(s) to the content or attach the content to the email message. For images, we prefer that you upload them to Wikimedia Commons, place {{subst:OP}} somewhere on the file description page, and provide the URL(s) of the uploaded content in your email message.
  5. You may choose another license from our list of free licenses if you wish, but you MUST state a license; otherwise, this declaration is invalid. Please also indicate the license's most recent version number, if applicable: CC BY-SA 4.0 or Creative Commons 0 Public Domain Dedication 1.0 are acceptably specific; simply stating Creative Commons license, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike, or CC BY (without the version number) is not.
Send the statement to our email response team ("VRT") at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, and then tag the subject file(s) with {{subst:PP}}. The email message you send should come from an email address that we can recognize as somehow associated with the content being released. For instance, if you are releasing images shown on a website, your email address should be associated with the website or listed on the contact page of the website; if you are releasing images on behalf of an organization, your email address should be at an official address of the organization; if you are releasing a work that is not available online, you may be asked to privately provide evidence of your identity to the VRT agent who processes your statement; if you are releasing a work for which you are acting on the copyright holder's behalf, you may be asked to provide proof of this authorization such as a forwarded email message with full Internet headers from the copyright holder designating you as their representative in this matter.

He can fill out the form and send it to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Just include all the file names in one single email. There will be an automatic response; post the ticket number here and he won't have to wait for 60 days or whatever the backlog is today. I'll get this done in no time. Sorry for the mess, sound files are difficult, because it is very complicated and time consuming for us to find out if an arrangement is original or copied. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:43, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

Request Unblock my Account

Dear Hedwing, I specially request you to unblock my account. It is so discouraging for you to block me because of multiple images you assumed to be a violation of wiki commons rule.

I have contributed much on Wikipedia and should not be blocked without warning, notice and debate.

Kindly review this

Wikinaija (talk) 09:43, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

You have been warned not to upload unfree media. You violated our rules and ignored the warnings. Therefore your account has been blocked for one week in compliance with our rules. Looking over your contributions here and on the EN-wiki I see that you have problems understanding rules, especially copyright rules. Do yourself a favor and read those rules. The next violation of copyright here on Commons will result in an even longer block. There is no reason and no room to debate copyright law. It is what it is. Best of luck, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 19:24, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

I am sorry you feel this way. Commons has to be very careful with copyright, that's all. Rules are rules, do not take this as an attack on your work. Let me know if you want to use OTRS. Best, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 05:38, 22 November 2017 (UTC)

@Jon Kolbert: Could you help me out and give the user an introduction into OTRS and project scope? I hope I didn't make to many mistakes in my FR response. Single Art

If you can’t upload copyrighted single art to Wikipedia then why are there lots and lots of single arts on Wikipedia? Also how do you upload single art to Wikipedia without getting a copyright strike? DatBoy101 (talk) 23:15, 23 November 2017 (UTC)

@DatBoy101: This here is Commons, not Wikipedia. We HAVE to adhere to stricter rules than the English Wikipedia. You can get away on enwiki with a rule called fair use. You find more info on enwiki: w:en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. You'll need to get help over there, we have no influence on wikipedias. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:12, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Deleted file 23 November File:1978 Vetter Racer.jpg

Could you please confirm and quote for me the upload details including the Username and date on this, from the 'non-public' view I know you are able to access? I believed the original was correctly used on WP and was a Craig Vetter organisation library image - nothing to do with www.caferacer.net/forums which would have copied it without acknowledgement to the original, or to the licence - being an un-regulated website. Thank you.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 03:49, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

@Rocknrollmancer: Everything is possible. Here's the data you wanted:

|Description=AMA Superbike Champion of 1978

|Source={{Own}}

|Date=1978

|Author= [[User:CraigVetter|CraigVetter]]

21:05, 28. Feb. 2008 . . CraigVetter

Hope you find that we can keep the photo. Best, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 02:04, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

File Merge and Move

I was requesting that that you merge Openstack logos into one as there are many of them and they are the same.

Merge File:OpenStack® Logo 2016.svg File:The OpenStack logo.png

Final file should be:

File:The OpenStack logo.svg — Preceding unsigned comment added by Henry Newman (talk • contribs) 13:37, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
@Henry Newman: You need to use the duplicate tag. See here: {{Duplicate}} --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 01:58, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
@Hedwig in Washington: Thanks managed to do it :) -- User:Henry Newman 00:05, 05 December 2017 (UTC)

I created a hundreds of categories. I always fill them. If a category (created for me) is empty, this is an error. What category/-ies?. Thanks. --Jmarchn (talk) 06:40, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

@Jmarchn: Good question. I deleted a big bunch of them, only some yours. Can't remember which were yours. No biggie. C(_) --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 04:31, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!
Hey old friend. I hope you and yours are healthy and happy. I'm closing in on my 50th birthday, which is in mid-March (!). I hope you have fewer gray hairs than me; you should see my beard! The underside of my chin is almost pure white! Take care amigo. Happy Holidays and best wishes for the New Year! lNeverCry 00:10, 3 December 2017 (UTC)

Luftfoto Balaton 2013.jpg

There is a Balatongyörök in the foreground. In the background there is Balatonkeresztúr. The explanation in Hungarian for Pallerti: Jól látható a keresztúri hajóállomás hullámtörője, illetve az előtérben a györöki part jellegzetes vonala, illetve a vonyarci Balatontourist Park Kemping & Üdülőfalu felé vezető út mellett található tó. A Gyenesdiás koordináták is passzolnak, a repülő alkalmatosság – ahonnan a kép készült – Gyenes felett van. Sorry, I don't know English enough to translate it. Maybe Grin does it. Partners and allies
  • We are still welcoming (more) staff from GLAMs (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums) to become part of our long-term focus group (phabricator task T174134). You will be kept in the loop of the project, and receive regular small surveys and requests for feedback. Get in touch with Sandra if you're interested - your input in helping to shape this project is highly valued!
Research
  • Research findings from interviews and surveys of GLAM project participants are being published to the research page. Check back over the next few weeks as additional details (notes, quotes, charts, blog posts, and slide decks) will be added to or linked from that page.
Development
  • The Structured Commons team has written and submitted a report about the first nine months of work on the project to its funders, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The 53-page report, published on November 1, is available on Wikimedia Commons.
  • The team has started working on designs for changes to the upload wizard (T182019).
  • We started preliminary work to prototype changes for file info pages.
  • Work on the MediaInfo extension is ongoing (T176012).
  • The team is continuing its work on baseline metrics on Commons, in order to be able to measure the effectiveness of structured data on Commons. (T174519)
  • Upcoming: in the first half of 2018, the first prototypes and design sketches for file pages, the UploadWizard, and for search will be published for discussion and feedback!
Stay up to date!

Hi,

Invitation to Blocking tools consultation

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team is inviting all Wikimedians to discuss new blocking tools and improvements to existing blocking tools in December 2017 for development work in early 2018.

We are specifically contacting you for your ideas because you are one of the top users of the blocking tool on Commons. We think that your comments will help us make better improvements. You can post to the discussion in the language that you are most comfortable expressing your ideas.

Other ways that you can help

  1. Spread the word that the consultation is happening; this is an important discussion for making decisions about improving the blocking tools.
  2. Help with translation.
  3. If you know of current or previous discussions about blocking tools that happened on your wiki, share the links.
  4. Help summarize the discussion to share back to your wiki.

If you have questions you can contact me on wiki or send an email to the Anti-Harassment Tools team.

For the Anti-Harassment Tools team, SPoore (WMF), Community Advocate, Community health initiative (talk) 17:31, 18 December 2017 (UTC)

  • I apologize for posting in English.
  • Please let us know if you wish to opt-out of all massmessage mailings from the Anti-harassment tools team.

Stille Nacht allerseits!

Merry Christmas!

Advice

Hello.

I was nominating the File:Azerbaijanilanguage.png because it is a duplicate of File:Azerilanguage.png which is not based on any sources and is an original research and I discovered that you protected this file because of edit wars. I initally put the deletion request in Commons:Deletion requests/File:Azerbaijanilanguage.png, but could not put it on the actual page of this file due to its protection.

What is your recommendation?
