Hello, Halibutt!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. odder (talk) 21:30, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Russian placenames on Poland maps[edit]

hello halibutt

your series of maps is a real great job but there are at least 2 mistakes on the russian territory (naturally, since these are maps of poland primarily) what is labeled volgograd is in truth voronezh (tzaritzyn/stalingrad/volgograd is in the south on the volga, as the name suggests) and what is labeled vyatka is the town of kirov (the real vyatka that was named kirov too when under soviet rule is far in the north urals)

these details aside, the maps are very much helpful, thank you for your work

best regards, k.f.

Thanks for uploading File:Inżynier-Gundlach-buduje2.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Halibutt,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Deletion[edit]

Thanks for your message and apologies for deletion of wrong one. Also sorry to have put the people involved to any disruption. I have restored the image, please let me know if I can help any further. JarrahTree (talk) 01:13, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to check the text of the two images - and data - to make sure the correct image has the correct text and info, I think the dupilicate process or me - has fouled up the correct info somehow. You know the details, better for you to check Thanks JarrahTree (talk) 01:23, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You might be able to help - this https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Malczewski_Polish_Hamlet.jpg seems the wrong way around as well - any thoughts? JarrahTree (talk) 05:35, 29 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In relation to your comment - I think the process, sizing up the images to verify as duplicate is one thing, then the texts on the two - usually the smaller/derivative is a giveaway - perhaps fewer categories (if at all), and other tell tale signs.

However in the case of the two we know about - somehow a 'dupe' tagger (or the process itself has insufficient checks) gets it all back to front. Perhaps a guidelines for a more thorough investigation on the part of the admin/deleter is needed. I stand guilty of probably a few mistakes there, and am always prepared to be either slapped by the trout or asked to revert my own work. I also should stay away from languages I am yet to understand... I think simple deletes are one thing - maybe there is a need for a separate more complex delete to have extra criterion for checking... where the size and categories look similar but there are other factors that throw doubt as to one more than another being the appropriate item. OK I get the message - I gonna steer clear of polish art works in the deletion caetgory! sorry to have caused problems JarrahTree (talk)

Oh well hope i undeleted the right one (see my edit history to check if need be) JarrahTree (talk) 10:12, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Oh well here is to getting right the next time I venture into the depths of deletions... JarrahTree (talk) 10:48, 2 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello, Halibutt.

I've just seen that you created a logo for WikiWakacje based on the Wikivacaciones logo. If you wish, I can upload the original SVG file so you can modify it. That way, we can keep some consistency between logos.

By the way: Is WikiWakacje related to Wikivacaciones (is Wakacje = Vacations or something similar)? I'd like to know because it would be really nice to know that one of our group experiences is actually being replicated somewhere :)

Cheers! --Racso (talk) 04:57, 9 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, the contest had exactly the same concept. In fact, I though that you were replicating the idea, but now it's clear to me that it's simply a coincidence: we both arrived to the same conclusion with the same analysis. Anyway, if you (as a group) think (as I do) that it may be useful to somehow "unify" the contests (as WLM or WLE do), we may do it.
About the logo: yes, I saw your work, and it's really nice (and the svg is optimized, too). What I'm saying is related to the "unification" thing, as the logos aren't currently equal. They don't need to be equal, obviously, but I think it's better if they are.
Good luck with the contest! --Racso (talk) 03:11, 10 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pattypan update[edit]

Hi, I see you've uploaded a few pictures with Pattypan that have the date formatted 11.09.15. Since the latest update, pattypan is suppose to recognize that this should be written 2015-09-11. Please update your Pattypan, thank you. --Vera (talk) 12:38, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiwakacje[edit]

Serdecznie pozdrawiam.

Raw list[edit]

Hi,

I've started the REST API to get information about uploaders.

Currently, the rough raw list works: https://tools.wmflabs.org/category-by-uploaders/v1/who?project=commonswiki&category=Fire%20escapes%20in%20Paris

Use https://tools.wmflabs.org/category-by-uploaders/v1/who?project=commonswiki&category= and append the category name (replace spaces by %20, _ or +, or don't replace them and your browser will do).

API specification and sandbox: /who and /status works, I haven't implemented /contributorsAndFiles yet.

Next steps are to implement /contributorsAndFiles, then to design a nice view. --Dereckson (talk) 07:28, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Serdecznie dziękuję, pozdrawiam --Jolanta Dyr (talk) 12:11, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Twoja mapa zawierala drobne bledy. Poniewaz byla ona kopiowana z drobnymi zmianami przez roznych ludzi, bledy sie rozpowszechnily. Móglbys zajac sie ich usunieciem? Odsylam do File talk:Rzeczpospolita 1939 ES.svg --Mewa767 (talk) 15:50, 18 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Czy powinien użyć innej licencji, by uniknąć zastrzeżeń?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wieslaw_Wojnowski_Gdansk_University_of_Technology_2003.jpg

Dobrego dnia!LukaszKatlewa (talk) 10:55, 25 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Zdjęcie Joanny Cygler[edit]

Witaj, na prośbę mojej koleżanki z SGH wgrałem jej zdjęcie na Commons, a fotograf p. Wojciech Kurek przesłał zgodę OTRS. Ty 8 czerwca oznaczyłeś je the message was not sufficient to confirm permission for this file.

Ponawiam zatem prośbę zatem o jej nadanie. Dziękuję. Boston9 (talk) 15:39, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Krzysiek, Template:Polish KPRM files powinien mieć jakiś dowód potwierdzający ze Kancelaria Prezesa Rady Ministrów udostępnia pliki na wolnej licencji, i sprecyzowania na jakiej wolnej licencji. Moze jakiś link albo list do OTRS?

Kiedyś przerabialiśmy ten temat z Polimerkiem i Kancelarią Prezydenta RP w odniesieniu do przemówień.
4 pkt 1 i 2 ustawy z dnia 4 lutego 1994 r. o prawie autorskim i prawach pokrewnych (Dz. U. z 2017 r. poz. 880 z późn. zm.) (zobacz Template:PD-Polishsymbol/pl) i jeśli by ta odpowiedz była przesłana do OTRS to by sprawa była jasna.
Ankry (talk) 20:22, 17 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:RM 70 MRL.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:RM 70 MRL.jpg) and the above demanded information in your request.

Meta / commons[edit]

There appears to be minimal linking from meta to commons re the competition - even a minimal comment could have helped - rather than just delete with no comment - for thickheads like me who cannot always get what is going on (viz the talk we had some time back further up your talk page) JarrahTree (talk) 15:13, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

nah it seems jcb edits and response explains the issues JarrahTree (talk) 01:15, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects[edit]

Hi, please do not create cross namespace redirects. Jcb (talk) 23:15, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

And why is that exactly? Halibutt (talk) 23:46, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Because we don't allow them. Jcb (talk) 23:47, 26 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:Redirect doesn't mention that. Is there any rule actually prohibiting it? Also, please be so kind as to respond on my talk page - or ping me the next time. Halibutt (talk) 01:19, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You should have responded at your talk page in de first place instead of here. I will mere the discussion. Jcb (talk) 08:34, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
See Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion, general reason 2. Jcb (talk) 08:38, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jcb: , the reason states Page is an unused and implausible redirect. Neither is applicable here: the redirect is both used and plausible. Sure, the reason also states that cross-namespace redirects may also be deleted under this criterion. Which implies that it's not automatic: they may be deleted, but this is not obligatory. To me it is clear that it all depends on the context: whether the redirect makes sense or not. Anyway, it's clear that cross-namespace redirects are - contrary to what you wrote in the edit summary - not disallowed. They may be discouragedFact, but the rule clearly doesn't prohibit them as such. Halibutt (talk) 09:02, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Jcb: to sum it up, you are free to nominate the page for deletion using ordinary means, but speedy deletion seems like a step too far in this context. Halibutt (talk) 09:07, 27 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
