Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Stolpersteine[edit]

Dag Jan, bedankt voor je foto's van de Stolpersteine in Gouda. Zie jij kans de categorienaam van "Stolpersteine Gouda" te wijzigen in "Stolpersteine in Gouda" in lijn met de overige steden in Nederland en elders? Bedankt vast. Oerd en Monnik[edit]

Ik heb de category Monnik weer weggehaald bij de Oerd. De koppeling is goed te volgen via de IMO categorie, die daar voor bedoeld is. Het schip kreeg pas in 2003 die nieuwe naam. Het komt veel voor dat schepen ondere meerdere namen zijn opgenomen. Het IMO nummer blijft altijd hetzelfde. Er zijn een aantal mensen bezig met het categoriseren van de hele database van schepen op Commons. Die hanteren de stelregel dat voor het schip de category wordt gebruikt, die hoort bij de datum (het tijdsbestek) van de foto. Anders kan het tot hele onwenselijke resultaten leiden. Dan moet je namelijk als gebruiker maar opnieuw uitvinden wat op dat moment de naam van het schip was. Dat werk hebben we nu al gedaan en het kost soms erg veel onderzoek. Dat gooi je weg door alle namen van het schip als category aan een foto toe te voegen. Het is niet nodig, omdat die via het IMO nummer zijn te vinden. Vandaar ook bij veruit de meeste schepen een verwijzing naar dat IMO nummer is opgenomen. --Stunteltje (talk) 19:11, 3 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Dat is klinklare nonsens, zoals aangegeven als beide categorieën gebruikt worden kan dat nooit tot dit soort problemen leiden.
