Help in uploading

Help in uploading

Hello.

I have managed to update the File:Standard time zones of the world.png (by copying the latest updated version from the File:DEC31 World Time Zones.png, except its title). I requested its update in Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop on 26 December 2017, because it required technical changes which I am not capable of doing. The problem is that this file cannot be uploaded and the explanation, "You cannot overwrite this file" appears. What is the reason for this and can you help me to upload this file? Many Wikipedia articles are using this file and that is why it needs to be updated. Thank you. Maphobbyist (talk) 00:20, 1 January 2018 (UTC)

@Maphobbyist: If you look just below the File history on this file File:Standard time zones of the world.png it says "* You cannot overwrite this file". There is a SVG version of this file if you look just below Summary part. It could be that this supersede the png version, I'm not really sure.
If you look at this category Category:Maps of World time zones you can see that there probably is some confusing about those maps. My understanding is that we should create New Versions with Date in the name and description. Like the one you try to owerwrite is from Oct 2011 (should have been in the file name also).
So to me what should be done is to make a New Version of this svg file File:Standard Time Zones of the World (October 2015).svg. I can see the problems to keep the latest version updated in the different articles when the name changes but I can't find One svg version which always is the latest. And then there is probably an interest in keeping all the different versions also.
If you need help with the svg version I can try to help, can also see there are some black areas on the thumb preview which look strange. --Goran tek-en (talk) 13:18, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply and recommendations.
In the Category:Maps of World time zones I have previously updated File:World Time Zones Map.png by copying the updated version from File:Standard World Time Zones.png last month (these files and their titles are not restricted according to a certain year). They are the same, hence duplicates. I can only copy previously updated complicated PNG maps, not make them myself. I can only edit simpler PNG maps. SVG maps are way beyond me.
That is why I have retracted the request for File:Standard time zones of the world.png in Graphic Lab/Map workshop as it is intended to be used as historical reference and is no longer updated (I hope that retracting this file is allowed and I have not violated any Wikimedia Commons rules). I have requested a name change for this file instead reflecting its fixed time status as of the year 2016, the last time it was updated: "File:Standard time zones of the world (2016).png".
If you have the time, you and other talented users can upload a SVG file and redirect File:World Time Zones Map.png and File:Standard World Time Zones.png to this future SVG file in the not so distant future.
Kindest regards.
Maphobbyist (talk) 17:00, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: As someone without any specific knowledge in this subject it seems really hard to understand all the different versions, and as the two you refer to as being duplicates, why not remove one of them. Keeping both is just confusing.
If you want me to update the svg version I need your help in that. You have to tell me what to change and then check the drafts for me, I can't do it alone. So if you want I can help on those conditions. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:37, 1 January 2018 (UTC)
I am certainly no expert myself on this topic. However by using various sources, a new SVG file (whose title and content should have no fixed year and time limit) can be created from File:Standard Time Zones of the World (October 2015).svg, and both duplicates File:World Time Zones Map.png and File:Standard World Time Zones.png, as well as other files can be redirected to this file. Since these two PNG files are up to date, they can be used to create the new SVG file without having to start from scratch. But for me the problem starts right there as I cannot create complicated PNG files from scratch, don't know how to redirect files, and absolutely know nothing about SVG files and how to create them. That's when I become useless and need the help of experienced users who are interested in this topic and in creating an SVG file.
These are the sources that I used for reference when I made the simple uploads (other users have also used these sources for updates). This website contains the latest news about DST and time zones changes for each country and region with detail as well as maps.

I hope it helps.

@Maphobbyist: I'm a graphic worker, I (as all graphic workers) try as far as I can to avoid doing; research, going thru material which always is new to me, translate, search for changes in material and so on. I/we concentrate on the graphic work and that is why I need your help.
I'm sure that those links contain all the necessary information but for me who has never seen those pages before it's just to much.
  • So as I said before, I will do the graphic work if you tell me what to update/change, check my drafts and then we can help each other with the redirecting and so on. Is this OK with you? --Goran tek-en (talk) 09:50, 2 January 2018 (UTC)
I didn't know that you replied. I am so sorry. What I have requested is indeed too much and there are indeed too many (and complicated) updates required for each map. If you have the time and if you are still interested, I will approach to you in a piecemeal manner for each map, as there are more than one update required in each map. Regards. Maphobbyist (talk) 21:13, 26 January 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: I thought I answered here but I can't see it so again; I will help you if we take it like you say. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:51, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

  • (The regions of Donetsk [4] and Luhansk [5] partially under Russian control in far eastern Ukraine also use Moscow Time UTC+03:00, but the frontline is not static and occasionally changes just like in WW1 with the last territorial change occuring in 2017 [6], so coloring this area could be problematic)

Maphobbyist (talk) 14:45, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

@Maphobbyist: I can't see exactly which areas you mean, can't zoom in on the map. Is those the areas you mean; South Ossetia, Abkhazia, Donetsk, Luhansk. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:42, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
The first two maps showing all of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are indeed correct – all its territories use Moscow Time (and of course all of Crimea). The last two maps showing only the cities of Donetsk and Luhansk are not correct. What I mean is the territory in far east Ukraine under pro-Russian control and which use Moscow Time: File:Map of war in eastern Ukraine in 08.08.14.png because all of Donetsk and Luhansk regions are not under their control as shown in the map. Maphobbyist (talk) 14:45, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: Draft. --Goran tek-en (talk) 15:34, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
The map showing Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Crimea is perfect, only the far eastern area of Ukraine in not exactly accurate. Here is another map of Ukraine showing the actual situation: File. I hope it helps. Maphobbyist (talk) 17:40, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
In the last update of this map, the last user has not colored Turkey entirely in red. Gallipoli Peninsula [7], Kapıdağ Peninsula [8], Marmara Island [9], Imbros (Gökçeada) Island [10], Tenedos (Bozcaada) Island [11], Datça Peninsula [12] and Bozburun Peninsula [13] still appear in violet, which becomes evident when this map is zoomed in. Can you color these forgotten areas in red as well? Maphobbyist (talk) 23:58, 29 January 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: New draft and thanks for the OSM links, very helpful. Is this we are working on the same as Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop#Time zone maps of Europe, if so that should be closed. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:25, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
Your edit for the Turkish version is excellent and complete. You can upload it. The Descriptionless, Catalan, English, French and German versions need exactly the same updates like the Turkish version. Maphobbyist (talk) 18:38, 30 January 2018 (UTC)
You can upload the Turkish version. If it is not too much, can you do the same changes to the other aforementioned versions, because they exactly need the same updates? Maphobbyist (talk) 08:38, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Or, do you expect me to upload your completed draft? Maphobbyist (talk) 14:24, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: I was just writing here, you have to give me some time to respond. It would have helped me if you had told me that we were going to update more maps with the same base map, now it will be more complicated and they have different texts on them. I will do them and then you will have to check them all, I will let you know when I'm done. --Goran tek-en (talk) 14:32, 31 January 2018 (UTC)

@Maphobbyist:

These five maps need exactly the same updates: Turkey, all of Crimea, all of Abkhazia, all of South Ossetia and the far eastern areas of Ukraine under pro-Russian control need to be colored in red as they use Moscow Time UTC+03:00, and without changing the de-jure borders of Ukraine and Georgia. Copying and pasting the red colored areas of Ukraine from the updated Turkish version map to these five maps should not be a problem, as they have no labels on them. Maphobbyist (talk) 15:39, 1 February 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist:
  • The five maps need more updating than the first one as we didn't include Turkey before, that's why I asked for you help on what to update.
  • Four out of them have labels, all different.
Check the files to see if I got it right. ✓ Done --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:18, 4 February 2018 (UTC)
The five maps you have updated are excellent! Great work! You can close my request in Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop. I have demanded too much and bothered you so much about these maps. That is why, I won't bother you for a very long time. Best regards, Maphobbyist (talk) 09:58, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: You are the one who started the request at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop so you are the one who should close it by putting out the resolved code. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:30, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
But it is inidcated in the section, that the graphist has to close the request (not the requester). Maphobbyist (talk) 17:27, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: I can't find it now but I have had this discussion before and this is what we ended up with:
  • The requester starts the request.
  • The graphic worker marks it with "taken" when working on it.
  • When the graphic worker is finished with the work the "done" code is placed on the request by the graphic worker.
  • If the requester things the work is completed she/he puts the code "resolved" there.
  • It's really only the requester who can decide when it's correct/finished as that person has the knowledge and knows what she/he wants. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:48, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
However according in the explantion, as the graphic worker you need to put the "done" code below the "Time zone maps of Europe" request section in Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop, before I can put the "resolved" code. Can you put it there please? Thank you. Maphobbyist (talk) 19:31, 5 February 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: Of course I could but we haven't been working on that request so you should really withdraw it. The way I know of is to put out "resolved" code so it gets archived, if you want you write an explanation. To my knowledge the "done" code is not needed for archiving, it's just a visible information. We did all the work here on my talk page and I haven't "taken" that request either. --Goran tek-en (talk) 09:32, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
Thank you for your advice, as I have no knowledge of these procedures. I am a slow learner. Maphobbyist (talk) 13:33, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

One small request

Hello.

In File:Map of Countries that do not recognize Christmas as Public Holiday.svg could you color Mali in grey (because Christmas is actually an official public holiday)? Could you also color Taiwan in light brown (instead of the current dark brown) because while not an official public holiday, Christmas is given observance.

Hello. There appear two grey boxes below Bangladesh. They must have been overlooked or forgotten by the original uploader. Could you get rid of them? Thank you. Maphobbyist (talk) 14:26, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
@Maphobbyist: Boxes removed. ✓ Done --Goran tek-en (talk) 22:05, 28 January 2018 (UTC)
Hello. There are two things that need to be corrected, which I overlooked and have discovered now. Can you add the border of South Sudan (where Christmas is an official holiday) and color the Caspian Sea, the adjacent Garabogazköl Lagoon, Aral Sea, Lake Baikal, Lake Balkhash, Lake Victoria and the Great Lakes in white (because they appear green like the landmass)?
(I am adding South Sudan (as well as Montenegro and other possible missing updates) in the PNG maps in Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries and then remove this category after updating them. There were close to 1100 maps since I started to update these files on 1 March 2018, now it is reduced to less than 630 maps, but there is a long way to go. However as an SVG illiterate, I cannot correct and/or update SVG files.)
Thank you.

@Maphobbyist: Which file are you referring to regarding the border and coloring lakes because there is no green in this file File:Map of Countries that do not recognize Christmas as Public Holiday.svg? --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:11, 14 June 2018 (UTC)

Correction requests

Hello, Goran tek-en.

There are mistakes in these maps which have not been undone. Would you correct them?

In both File:Christian States.svg and File:State Religions.svg, El Salvador is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Article 26 of the Constitution of El Salvador does not declare the Catholic Church as a state religion: "The juridical personality of the Catholic Church is recognized. The other churches may obtain recognition of their personality in conformity with the law". Source: http://confinder.richmond.edu/admin/docs/ElSalvador1983English.pdf

In File:Map of state religions.svg, Georgia is wrongly included, which needs to be removed because it doesn't have a state religion. Section 1 of Article 9 of the Constitution of Georgia does not declare the Georgian Orthodox Church as a state religion: "The state shall declare complete freedom of belief and religion, as well as shall recognise the special role of the Apostle Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Georgia in the history of Georgia and its independence from the state." Source: http://www.parliament.ge/files/68_1944_951190_CONSTIT_27_12.06.pdf

In File:Paises con mayoría cristiana.svg Nakchivan needs to be painted in pink, because it is an exclave of Azerbaijan, and like Azerbaijan as a whole, Nakchivan doesn't have a Christian majority.

Favor

Hi Goran tek-en, can I ask you a favor? Last few days, I've started new project making location maps for Georgia (see here). Before I was using Inkscape but in this project I decided to work with Illustrator but something strange happens after I upload a map. Maps appear a little bit blurred (see File:Georgia Imereti location map.svg) SVG code is ok, everything seems ok but their preview is blurred. Could you help me to find out the problem? Any ideas? --g. balaxaZe 15:04, 13 February 2018 (UTC)

@Giorgi Balakhadze: Hi, I really do not know much about the different rendering issues more then what I run into and try to solve then. Mostly by simplifying and removing everything which is not needed. I looked at the file and my suggestion is to try this: Remove all the clip paths and actually remove everything outside of the area you need and upload a new version like that. Give the preview time to get updated see if it helps.
Or maybe (not so clean way) you just can try to make the svg image larger, ea width 1200 instead of 512. Give the preview time to get updated see if it helps.
I have nothing backing up this, it's just a feeling I have that maybe at some smaller rendering sizes the material outside the clipping paths causes this blur. I always remove everything outside the used area, I have at several occasions run into problems with all the left over material. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:17, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Now I will try the first part of your advices. Changing preview pixels is crazy thing(!) in Illustrator artboard size is 729x484 but in commons appears not more than 512px.--g. balaxaZe 17:55, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
@Giorgi Balakhadze: I don't really understand. In Inkscape (as you also work with) I can set the art board size to anything I want and I'm really sure you can do that in Illustrator also. Where the 512*340px comes from I'm not sure if you didn't set them when you started a new file. When I look at different svg files I have created and they have different art board sizes, the different png's created also change. It must just be mathematical scale. So for you to go from 512*340 to 1280*850 you just have to change the size of your art board, paper, working area or what its called in Illustrator. Then scale ALL of your drawing by 2,5, be sure to lock proportions (wide*height) and if to scale line weights and so on. The preview size comes by it self, nothing you have to edit or create. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:45, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
I know that it is very strange and it makes me crazy really. I know that in Inkscape we can do that but in Illustrator that doesn't work. Simple example this map was made in Inkscape File:საქართველოს მუნიციპალიტეტების მოსახლეობის უმრავლესობა სქესის მიხედვით (2014).svg (800 × 464 pixels.) After I've translated (only) it in Illustrator File:Municipalities of Georgia by Population’s Predominant Gender (2014).svg and re-uploaded it became 512 × 297 pixels. With png files in Illustrator everything works great, they change size. I think I need someone who works with Illustrator, maybe you know someone from Graphics lab? --g. balaxaZe 19:25, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
I've enlarged artboard it fixed blurring but the preview size remains the same :d (File:Georgia Imereti location map.svg--g. balaxaZe 19:27, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Screenshot of the program ► https://imgur.com/a/89fcL --g. balaxaZe 19:31, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
@Giorgi Balakhadze: File:საქართველოს მუნიციპალიტეტების მოსახლეობის უმრავლესობა სქესის მიხედვით (2014).svg is 970 × 562px in art board in Inkscape and the png preview is 800*464px and that preview is not something you can control. Also in this file you have a box outside of the art board, why?
File:Municipalities of Georgia by Population’s Predominant Gender (2014).svg is 776*450px in art board size in Inkscape and not what it says on the file 512*297. It must be something with illustrator how you import/open/saves the files there. I guess there could be a standard/default size which is set to 512*297 so you have to change that when you open or import or what you do.
  • You have so many clip paths which makes it very very hard for someone else to reuse and make derivates of your files.
  • Why do you turn the texts into outline, in that way it makes it so much harder to make a translation of your maps, please keep text as text if it's not for a very special reason.
  • File:Maps template-en.svg is a template that is jused when maps are created here and so that we try to use the same graphic expression for the same purpose. Please read this and the linked pages, WikiProject_Maps/Conventions
  • Also look at this page as it will help you Help:Illustrator.
  • There is a lot of information on Illustrator and how to work with it online so read.
I think you should make a break and sort out the different issues you have with Illustrator. Ones you have done that you can set up a workflow for all of your maps within this project. In the end it will be very helpful and it will help you both in time and reduce the amount of problems. --Goran tek-en (talk) 20:07, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
Ah, if you were using Illustrator you could understand me better, I really checked everything (every button), searched on youtube and etc. I give up now, I won't use Illustrator for svg maps. Check this again (File:Georgia Imereti location map.svg, now I've exported it from Inkscape and no single problem with blurring or size (in any use, either preview or template). Perhaps issue is in the program's code reading.
Anyway, thanks for your attention Goran tek-en.--g. balaxaZe 21:16, 13 February 2018 (UTC)
@Giorgi Balakhadze: That's great but why have you made the art board so big File:Georgia Imereti location map.svg 4,563 × 3,036px, also this can cause problems. To my experience a width of 1000-1500px on a map like that is a good size. I prefer to cut out/remove everything outside the art board but that is just my opinion. I hope I have supported you to some extent. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:09, 14 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi Goran tek-en, can you help me? In portuguese wikipedia is happening a challenge to decide the Wikipedia logo when us get 1 milion articles. I created my draw in Inkscape, but when I uploaded on Commons, the image was deformated, forcing me to upload a PNG logo. But I think that isn't normal and can be fix. Could you see the SVG image and see what happened? Mr. Fulano (talk) 21:27, 20 February 2018 (UTC)

@Mr. Fulano: First you had a mix of text and text outline, I made it all outline. The text was to low, actually outside the page area, look at the png and you can see that at the bottom, I raised it. You should delete that png as it's cut at the bottom. I moved the content to a new Inkscape page and saved it there as there were nothing visible wrong, I didn't dive into the code. The new page/file looked OK on my computers viewing program as yours didn't. I uploaded the new version but it takes some time for the preview to be updated so we will have to wait and see, get back to me. --Goran tek-en (talk) 12:21, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

I also suggest making the pyramid more in middle of the symbol with overlapping instead of the middle of the oval. Best regards -- User: Perhelion 11:33, 2 March 2018 (UTC)

Map request!

Hello! I don't know if you remember me, but you drew up some maps for me a few years ago. I've always been in awe of your skill in that regard, and am still thankful. As it happens, I'm working on the article about the 'Northern Expedition', a military campaign to reunify China that took place in the 1920s. It's the type of conflict that really requires a good map to understand, and as of now we have none. I was wondering if perhaps you could recreate this map, which suits the article perfectly. The colours in the original are a bit strange, but I'd leave that up to you. We also wouldn't need all the dates on the map proper. The only change would be to use modern romanisation of the Chinese place/personal names, but I can provide those to you. Are you interested? RGloucester (talk) 00:57, 29 September 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: Hi, of course I can help you with that. Is that map free to use/"copy" or not? Do you have any other sources that I can look at? I will start and then you can give me feedback as we work along. --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:56, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: What is this for a map, nothing we can use as base? File:Map_of_Northern_Expedition.png --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:19, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks so much for your help. Well, that existing map is really just very poor quality, aesthetically, and also has a lot of spelling errors. It is not very easy to understand, if you get what I mean. Readability matters. If it can be of use to you, however, by all means use it. As for that other map being free to use, I have no idea. I found it randomly via Google, and there is no clear trace of its original source. I've also got this, if that helps. This one is actually a better base, as it includes province names, which are important for reader comprehension. But, again, the spelling and romanisations are all wrong, so I'll have to provide you those. It also includes the Honan (nowadays Henan) branch of the offensive, which is also important. I'm not really asking for an exact copy, just something that serves this purpose. Just tell me what you need, and I'll get you the information. RGloucester (talk) 21:01, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
This map might also be useful. It includes the modern romanisations in parentheses on the category page. RGloucester (talk) 22:10, 1 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: Thanks, remember I know nothing of this subject or this area of the world at that time.
  • 1. We have to start with that you on ONE map present the over all area you want's the map to cover (draw the area or crop it), it's important to start with the correct area to be covered, not too much not to less.
  • 2. Then I need you to present a map with the different provincial boundaries.
  • After that I will see if I can use any of the existing svg maps as base, if not I will draw a new one. It's always difficult to combine different maps as they all have different perspectives etc. For the details regarding spelling and stuff like that we will adress them later on. To much information regarding details just confuse me at this stage, remember it's not my subject, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:13, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
Here's a cropped version that includes provincial boundaries. I think that's about right. Only thing wrong about it is that Ningxia was merged with Gansu at this time. RGloucester (talk) 17:58, 2 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: First draft, You have to check so I got everything, areas, borders etc correct. Check also the islands, I have guessed where they belong. The colors is from a palette that should work for most color blinds also but we can change as we agree.

Looking good so far! To start with, the border between the two orange provinces should be removed; they were merged at the time as "Gansu". Second of all, I'd like it if the shades of blue were used for KMT-controlled territories, as that is their party colour. Shades of red can be used for Beiyang government affiliated territories. To make this clear:

  • Guangdong = KMT government (blue)
  • Guangxi = Guangxi clique (KMT affiliated-some other shade of blue)
  • Shaanxi/Suiyuan/Chahar = Guominjun (KMT affiliated-some shade of blue)
  • Shanxi = Yan Xishan (independent)
  • Hunan/Hubei/Henan = Wu Peifu (Beiyang affiliated-some shade of red)
  • Anhui/Jiangxi/Fujian/Zhejiang/Jiangsu = Sun Chuanfang (Beiyang affiliated-some shade of red)
  • Shandong/Zhili/Jehol/Fengtian/Heilongjiang = Fengtian clique (Beiyang affiliated-some shade of red)
  • Yunnan/Sichuan/Guizhou/Gansu - can be off-white (blank) as not directly relevant to the conflict

For cities, we need Guangzhou, Changsha, Nanchang, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing, Xuzhou, Zhengzhou, Taiyuan, Jinan, Qingdao, Beijing, Tianjin, Dairen (modern Dalian), Mukden (modern Shenyang). That should be good enough. Thanks again for your hard work! RGloucester (talk) 23:32, 4 October 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: I just have to ask about the coloring. As I have no knowledge of this topic: is it important that we keep this coloring that group provinces together?
My reason for asking is because I think that it will make it harder to view/read the map's information about war movements. Also it just looks terrible to me. I will make a second version which is more clean and then later on we can decide which to use or if we can find a nother way to show the groping, just think about it for now, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 07:06, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
Well, if you can come up with a better colour scheme, go ahead...but it is important that those groupings are shown, and I think colour is the best way to do so. Perhaps instead of shades of the same colour, use related colours like blue/green for KMT, red/orange for Beiyang? That'd be fine...cool colours for KMT, warm for Beiyang...or something. I trust your judgement. I forgot to add earlier, but, if possible, please display the Yangtze and Yellow rivers. Thanks again. RGloucester (talk) 13:48, 5 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: Sorry to trouble you again. It's very hard for me to find the cities as not all is on the cropped map and their names are different from what you have given here. Could you mark them on the cropped map and write their names there, it would help me alot, thanks. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:46, 6 October 2018 (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't know how to mark them on the map...I don't have any such software or experience. However, if you look at this, most of the places appear, though often under different names. I'll provide conversion.
  • Canton = Guangzhou
  • Foochow = Fuzhou
  • Wuhan = Wuchang
  • Hangchow = Hangzhou
  • Nanking = Nanjing
  • Tsingtao = Qingdao
  • Peking = Beijing
  • Chi-nan = Jinan
  • Dalian = Dairen
  • Kai-teng is near Zhengzhou, but not exactly in the same place...
  • Xuzhou...I don't know exactly how to show you as it is on neither map.

RGloucester (talk) 21:31, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: New draft, Check locations, names, areas etc. I will later on move the names around and change the formatting so don't think of that right know. --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:09, 7 October 2018 (UTC)
Thanks again for your hard work. I'm afraid a few of them are quite off. Guangzhou (at the start of the Pearl River Delta, not at a joining of three rivers inland), Zhengzhou (should be in Henan), Nanjing (should be in Jiangsu), and Dairen (should be on the peninsula there) are in the wrong spots. Kai-teng is not needed. Changsha, Nanchang, Tianjin and Mukden are missing. Wuhan is in the right spot, but should be listed as 'Wuchang'. The pink islands should be the same colour as the mainland. The provincial border between the area you labelled as Gansu and the province to the north of it should be removed...they were merged at that time. 'Indochine Francaise' should be changed to 'French Indochina'. Japanese Korea and Japanese Taiwan should be labelled as such. I think that's about it for now. Let me know if you need any more detailed assistance. Thanks for your patience. RGloucester (talk) 03:28, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: You don't have to thank me all the time, I do did as I enjoy it, think we all can help each other and I hope it's to some use for someone. New draft, if this is correct now I need information about the war and what you want shown. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:05, 8 October 2018 (UTC)
Excellent! Everything is in the right place now. The only other two 'structural' improvements required are some colour for Japanese-controlled Korea, Taiwan, and the Liaodong Peninsula (where Dairen is), and also the addition of the city of Hefei in Anhui province, which I forgot. Also, the northern border with Mongolia should be marked as an international border. The Yellow River delta is also in the wrong place...it is to the east, at the edge of the bay.
For the war itself, please follow the arrows used on this map. There are a few changes from that map. One, instead of showing an arrow from Wuhan (Wuchang) to Kai-teng, show it from Wuchang to Zhengzhou. In addition, add an arrow from Fuzhou to Hangzhou, and arrow from Wuchang to Nanchang. If an arrow on that map leads from a city I did not add to this map, still show the arrow. I did not add those cities because they are not important, but the movement is. Also, don't feel the need to represent the intermediate cities with no names between Shanghai and Nanjing, and the like. A single arrow is fine. RGloucester (talk) 18:12, 8 October 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: New draft

  • I don't understand what you say about the delta of the Yellow river, I haven't drawn any delta for it?
  • The map with the movements are very different in porportions so I have to guess a lot, so I'm unsure about the arrows and lines, just tell me which to edit.
  • Do you want the same type of color on the lines/arrows or they can be something else?
  • The line between Changsha and Wuchang, I draw it around the lake I don't know if that's what you want?
  • The line between Nanchang to Nanjing also around a lake?
  • The line between Nanjing to Jinan also around a lake?
  • When we have the final positions of the lines/arrows I will see if I can make them more visible. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:06, 9 October 2018 (UTC)
  • About the Yellow River, I meant that the point where it reaches the ocean is wrong. It is to the east, at the edge of the bay.
  • The lakes' proportions are wrong, for both Changsha and Nanchang...there should be a direct land route without any interference from the lakes. They are not big like that. It might be easier to just remove them from this map as not relevant.
  • The line from Changsha to Wuchang should be south the of the Yangtze, like a branch off the line to Nanchang.
  • The line from Nanjing to Jinan should actually be a line from Nanjing to Xuzhou, and then on to Jinan. If the lake makes it difficult to draw a line, feel free to remove it.
  • The line from Wuchang north should end in Henan province...the second line to Jinan should be removed.
  • The purple line from Shaanxi should go Zhengzhou first. From Zhengzhou, there should be two prongs...one toward Xuzhou, and one to Jinan. From Jinan, it should advance west of the red line to Beijing.
  • We're missing the line from Fuzhou to Hangzhou.
  • Also, I made a mistake earlier. The province marked as Heilongjiang is actually Jilin. Heilongjiang is to the north, mostly off the map.

RGloucester (talk) 19:08, 9 October 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: New draft. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:38, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
Everything looks right! The only thing that needs to be adjusted is that the Wuchang line north should be adjusted to converge on Zhengzhou. Other than that, I expect its just a matter of the legend and styling, no? RGloucester (talk) 18:14, 10 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: I have just made a suggestion for the legend, you tell what you want there.
Looking good. Please adjust the Nanchang to Nanjing line so that it is south of the river. As for the lines, I think the outline is not needed. The legend looks perfect. Let me give you proper names for all the stuff there.
  • Kuomintung→Kuomintang
  • Kwangsi→Guangxi clique, Li Zongren
  • Kuominchun→Guominjun, Feng Yuxiang
  • Yen Hsi-shan→Yan Xishan
  • Chili, Sun Ch'uan fang→Zhili clique, Sun Chuanfang
  • Chili, Wu P'ei-fu→Zhili clique, Wu Peifu
  • Feng-tein, Chang Tso-lin→Fengtian clique, Zhang Zuolin
On the matter of the colour scheme, I agree with your earlier comments...feel free to try out a nicer looking scheme. RGloucester (talk) 19:04, 11 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: Two drafts; Area, Lines. You also have to check everything in the legends, I miss X and Y and I might have made have made a mess of the others, sorry. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:35, 12 October 2018 (UTC)
I think the lines look great...much better than the area.
  • X=Yan Xishan
  • Y=Guominjun, Feng Yuxiang (you can change the line legend description to just 'Guominjun')
I have five final questions:
  • Can the attack lines be matched with the colour of their respective territories? Meaning, synchronise the Kuomintang colours, Guominjun colours, etc?
  • Why do the lines from Guangzhou not start at the city dot? Can this be fixed?
  • Can the line from Zhengzhou to Jinan be moved south of the Yellow River? Also, can you slightly move the Jinan dot? The city is just south of the river as well.
  • Can you add a branch off from the Kuomintang line between Jinan and Beijing that goes to Tianjin?
  • I personally think sans-serif fonts like the ones used at File:War in donbass.svg are easier to read and more modern looking...if that's acceptable?
Thanks again, RGloucester (talk) 18:29, 12 October 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: New draft.

  • They lines from Guangzhou started like that on the map I looked at then. Now when I check other maps I can see that the city is in the wrong position so I move it and change the origin of the lines.
  • This is how that map is viewed with me and it's also the font that is used on both the mapes, Liberation Sans. Generally it's belived that Sans is easier to read on screen and Serif is easier when printed, Serif include more thin lines and gives a page more flow. I belive that the reason you view them differently has to do with that they are viewed from different servers with different settings. But at commons you should view them correctly as Liberation Sans is an approved font there, strange. Maybe you can try a different browser, force a reload of the page or check so that you have Liberation Sans on your computer. I'm not sure where the exchange of fonts take place so I can't tell you for sure.
  • Regarding colors of movements. Aren't the lines colors grouped by you; Yan Xishan from Shanxi dark blue 1, Guominjun from Shaanxi pink 4, Kuomintang from Guanxi and Guangdong red 14. If not you have to send me a print screen of your screen.
    • Or did you mean that; Kuomintang from Guanxi and Guangdong should be one of the two blue if so which, Guominjun from Shaanxi should be the Shaanxi blue, Yan Xishan from Shanxi should be the Shanxi green. This can be done but I have to understand what you mean. --Goran tek-en (talk) 16:58, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
On the colours, I meant the latter. For the Guanxi and Guangdong lines, you can use the Kuomintang blue, for the others, do as you said, Yan Xishan should be Shanxi green, Guominjun Shaanxi blue.
Also, please add a branch from the Kuomintang line between Jinan and Beijing that goes to Tianjin.
About fonts, I see this, whilst I see the Donbass map the same as you do...strange. If its a problem with my computer, never mind. I'm on a Mac, so I guess I don't have those installed. RGloucester (talk) 17:12, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
@RGloucester: New draft. Regarding the fonts, what you see is not correct, that is a Serif font but I use a Sans font and that is what will be shown at commons. Here you can download Liberation Sans for Mac and install it on your computer if that helps. You will probably have to restart or force a reload to get the new font ones it's installed. --Goran tek-en (talk) 18:26, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
Looks done to me...and perfect. RGloucester (talk) 18:43, 13 October 2018 (UTC)
Actually, I noticed one last thing...after this one edit it can be uploaded. Before I didn't consider it a problem, but I changed my mind. The province north of Jilin and Fengtian doesn't need a label...but it should be included in the Fentian clique territory and not be grey. As of now it looks as if it was outside of Fengtian control, and I don't want that misconception to spread. Thanks. RGloucester (talk) 03:33, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

@RGloucester: New draft. But should it be an international border there then?
I will need the following;

  • Name of the file
  • Description
  • Category/ies at commons

to be able to upload it at commons. --Goran tek-en (talk) 17:13, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Oh dear...it now looks like they controlled Soviet territory. That 'international border' on the right side should be the border for the Fengtian as well. Beyond that is Soviet territory, and should be grey . You now have it correct on the left side. Once that's fixed, upload it as File:Northern Expedition 1926–28 and put it in the Category:Northern Expedition. RGloucester (talk) 17:19, 14 October 2018 (UTC)

Like the ones for File:India (no claimed territories).svg and File:People's Republic of China (no claimed territories).svg. New map request

Would you be willing to make a conflict map showing troop movements during the Battle of Lukaya? It was a 1979 conflict in Uganda. Page 370 of Arabs at War: Military Effectiveness, 1948-1991 has its own map that shows the movements. If this map were created, it would be the first original image on an Wikimedia platform regarding the Uganda-Tanzania War. -Indy beetle (talk) 04:47, 18 December 2018 (UTC)

@Indy beetle: I can help you with that. I can't view that page 370 in the link so you have to provide me with it. Is that source free or does it have copyright on it? If so we can only use it as a source for information. --Goran tek-en (talk) 11:17, 18 December 2018 (UTC)
