First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

New source added. However, the photo is CC-BY-NC like some other photos of the mosaics I uploaded a while ago. I am unsure if it was under this license when I uploaded it (I think I checked on that, I always use the no-NC search tool on flickr!). Now it will probably have to be deleted, right? I might go ahead and ask the photographer to change the license as I have successfully done so in the past. --Gnom 15:33, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
Possibly It has changed the license. But now we have no way to check it, since the review has a too long delay. Please try to contact him, I also have good experiences with flickr users. Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Dear Gnom,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

Hier noch ein oder zwei Sätze zu Erklärung: Auch wenn Frau Muggenthaler-Schmack dir das Bild zur weiteren Verwendung überlassen hat, kann letztendlich nur der Fotograf Matthias Wegener (siehe Metadaten) über die Lizenz entscheiden. Italien und Nutzungsrechte

Hallo Gnom, mir fiel grad wieder so was in die Hand. Wenn Du dann weiter klickst kommst Du hierhin und hierhin. Also die Teilnahme ist überhaupt nur in freigegebenen Einrichtungen möglich und dann mit den aus den Lizenzen des ersten Files ersichtlichen Einschränkungen. Spannend und kraus. Hallo Oursana, danke für den Hinweis. Das ist ja echt hanebüchen. Der Zweck so eines Gesetzes erschließt sich mir überhaupt nicht ("protection of Italy’s historic and artistic heritage and its standards of dignity" - so ein Unfug). Möglicherweise geht es da einzig um Geld. Richtig und wichtig aus juristischer ist der Hinweis "unrelated to copyright regulations" - es handelt sich hier um eine eigentumsrechtliche Regelung. Hallo Gnom, ich wollte Dir mal ein Beispiel für cc Lizenz eines dt Museum schicken http://www.museum-digital.de/bawue/singleimage.php?imagenr=929&inwi=1&w=1240&h=663&extern=yes, auch beim File im Wasserzeichen.

Wenn Du in der http://fotothek.spsg.de suchst, zB. Grunewald, Sanssouci, Caputh sind die Abbildungen älter als 60 Jahre haben ein Copyright Wasserzeichen, http://www.spsg.de/forschung-sammlungen/bibliothek-fotothek-archive/fotothek/, Aber jetzt gibt es ja ein GLAM LG--Oursana (talk) 15:12, 6 August 2015 (UTC)

Hallo Oursana, die Prado-Geschichte kannte ich schon. Dass im anderen Fall ein/e Commons-User/in das Urheberrecht an Reproduktionsfotografien gemeinfreier zweidimensionaler Werke für sich in Anspruch nimmt, hatte ich noch nicht gesehen. In der Tat und mich dann noch als Rechtsbrecher beschimpft. Ich war erst auch ziemlich gefrustet, dass kein Aufschrei durch die community geht. Sie sogar noch den rechtlichen Standpunkt von Commons beschimpft und das als Admin. Jetzt scheint es ja in die richtige Richtung zu laufen. Das braucht hier sonst keiner. Hallo Gnom. Vielen Dank für Dein Feedback auf der Diskussionsseite des Public Domain Projekts. Hauptberuflich bin ich Musikhistoriker und nebenberuflich Personal-Manager einiger Film- und Musikschaffenden. Ich arbeite 80% als Volunteer. Wir sind seit 2011 Affiliate-Partner von Wikimedia und digitalisieren historische Tonträger aus unserer Sammlung, die nach Klärung der Rechte in die Commons hochgeladen werden. Ich bringe mich auch gerne in Fotoprojekte ein - zuletzt das Kameraprojekt in Graz - dort unter meinem privaten Nick "Namrood".   • Was ist ein "Affiliate-Partner von Wikimedia"? Ich höre den Begriff gerade zum ersten Mal...

Am Projekt in Hamburg nehme ich als User:Namrood teil
  • Ich arbeite 80% unentgeltlich für das Public Domain Projekt (WissensWert/63 - Public Domain Projekt). Das heisst ich arbeite ohne Lohn 80%, während ich 20% arbeitslos bin.
  • Das Public Domain Projekt ist ein Wikimedia movement affiliate. Wir sind eine gemeinnützige Stiftung, die seit 2010 von Wikimedia finanziell unterstützt wird, da wir gemeinfreie Musik aus unserer Sammlung digitalisieren und nach der Rechteklärung in die Wikimedia Commons hochladen. Der Grundstein legte der WissensWert-Wettbewerb. Wikimedia Deutschland erhöhte die Fördersumme für die Beschaffung eines Laserplattenspielers. Dafür gingen wir einen Vertrag ein, dass wir alle von uns erstellten gemeinfreien Digitalisate unserer Sammlung den Wikimedia Commons spenden sollten. An der Wikimania 2013 in Hongkong lernten wir das Projekt "Dominio Público Sonoro Uruguay (autores.uy)" kennen. Zusammen gründeten wir im 2015 die Wikimedia Digitization User Group.

Templates für Wiki Loves Music

Gnom, vielleicht noch einmal in deutsch? Dann könnte ich besser versuchen, dir zu helfen.

  • {{Wiki Loves Music}} sieht ja schon gut aus bis auf die Kategorisierung und vor allem einen merkwürdigen und defekten Link, der wohl zu de:Wikipedia:Wiki Loves Cocktails gehen sollte (aha, ich sehe schon, das ist bereits in der von dir verwendeten Kopiervorlage kaputt – ich würde das einfach rausschmeißen). Soll es auch eine Katergorie für die Dateien geben? Andere Kampagen machen das, vgl. allein category: "wiki loves cocktails".
  • Bei den anderen Templates ist mir nicht klar, was wofür gedacht ist. Davon hängt dann auch ab, wie sie aussehen sollen. Du sagtest, als eine Vorlage soll {{PD-Nationalmuseum Stockholm}} dienen. Das ist eine Lizenzvorlage. Soll es so etwas auch für das Gewerbemuseum geben oder soll eine der üblichen Lizenzvorlagen genutzt werden? Da bist Du doch eher Experte :-).
  • Für {{Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe}} hast Du das Subtemplate {{Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe/i18n}} und eine englische Unterseite angelegt. Das funktioniert dann aber nur mit der Translate-Extension, was wiederum Übersetzungsadministratoren benötigt. Ich persönlich bin ja der Meinung, dass es dafür nicht nötig ist, aber man könnte, auch damit es dann schneller geht, einen deutschsprachigen Übersetzungsadmin ansprechen, vgl. die entsprechende Liste (in Commons am aktivsten sind meiner Ansicht nach Hedwig i.W., Steinsplitter und Srittau, Reinhard Kraasch sollte aus dewiki gut bekannt sein). Es fehlt noch mehr, aber das kann man reparieren, sieh dir Help:Autotranslate an.
  • Es gibt noch die Möglichkeit, eine eigene Institution-Vorlage für das Museum einzurichten, und das wäre bei einer größeren Anzahl von Dateien auch sinnvoll, vgl. Institution:Kunstgewerbemuseum Berlin.

Hallo Speravir, danke für deine Nachricht. Leider verstehe ich kaum, wie diese Vorlagen funktionieren. Vielleicht erkläre ich am besten, was ich am Schluss haben will:
  • Die Vorlage Template:Wiki Loves Music, mit der ich alle Dateien kennzeichnen kann, die im Laufe des Projekts entstanden sind. Diese sind bisher alle in der Category:Wiki Loves Music zu finden. Ich habe die Vorlage und die Kategorie unabhängig voneinander eingefügt, aber wenn ich dich richtig verstehe, kann man das auch kombinieren. Die Bilder in der Kategorie kommen aus ganz unterschiedlichen Quellen.
  • Ein Teil der Bilder in der Kategorie Category:Wiki Loves Music stammen aus dem Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe. Sie sollten daher mit dem Template:Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe gekennzeichnet sein. Es kann aber gut sein, dass das Museum zukünftig auch ganz andere Bilder spendet, die mit Musik nichts zu tun haben, so dass die Wiki Loves Music-Kategorie und die Museum-für-Kunst-und-Gewerbe-Kategorie unabhängig voneinander bestehen müssen. Fürs Erste ist geplant, dass das Museum ca. 100 Fotos von Musikinstrumenten spendet.
  • Schließlich möchte das Museum seine Bilder unter CC0 veröffentlichen, aber dabei auch ein paar Hinweise zur Nachnutzung geben, so wie es in Template:PD-Nationalmuseum Stockholm geschieht. Den Text dazu kann ich liefern.

Gnom, die Sache, ob {{Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe}} mit Extension:Translate oder nicht, hat sich erledigt. Das ist ohne mein Zutun repariert worden. Und Institution:Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg gibt’s schon längst und ist ja auch prominent in Category:Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe eingebunden. Ansonsten, bevor ich weitermache, ein paar andere Fragen:

  • Die Vorlage {{Wiki Loves Music}} hat links ein Bild, das in voller Größe sehr gut aussieht, bei dem aber meiner Ansicht nach in der geringen Vorschaugröße nicht viel zu erkennen ist. Bilder wie oder, wenn es auch hochkant sein darf, wären da besser. Man muss für die Einbettung die resultierende Höhe beachten, was ich mit den Breitenangaben hier einigermaßen getan habe.
  • Sollen nach Möglichkeit nur Dateien in die Kategorie Wiki Loves Music, die im Rahmen des Projektes hochgeladen wurden? 100%ig kann man sowas nie verhindern, aber man könnte auf der Kategorieseite Hinweise setzen, was getan und gelassen werden soll beispielsweise „nie Kategorie direkt setzen, nur die Vorlage benutzen“. Ich sehe auch gerade, dass andere „Wiki Loves irgendwas“-Projekte sogar Seiten direkt auf Commons angelegt haben (vgl. Suche : "wiki loves"). Stand heute gibt es 4 Dateien, die in der Kategorie stehen, aber die Vorlage nicht enhalten, davon eine von dir hochgeladene (Suche: incategory:"Wiki Loves Music" -hastemplate:"Wiki Loves Music", es wäre vielleicht gar nicht so schlecht, das später als Wartungslink in der Kategorie anzugeben). Übrigens stammt diese von dir hochgeladene Datei, Spiegelsaal aus dem Budge-Palais im Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe.png, ja vom Museum, anhand der könnten wir alles durchexerzieren, was Du willst.
  • Wäre ein Name „PD-Kunstgewerbemuseum Hamburg“ in Ordnung, oder muss es „PD-Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg“ sein oder gar noch was anderes? Die Stockholmer Vorlage ist ja ebenso mit Extension:Translate erstellt. Die Schwierigkeit hierbei ist, dass immer vom englischen Text für alle Übersetzungen ausgegangen wird. Wenn Du also einen anderen Lizenztext willst, müsste das auch zuerst in Englisch erstellt werden, der deutsche Text kann dann offiziell nur als Übersetzung eingetragen werden. Ich könnte aber erst einmal den Inhalt der Stockholmer Vorlage verwenden.

  • Als Beispieldatei aus dem Museum können wir File:Zweimanualiges Cembalo Christian Zell.jpg verwenden.
  • Ich habe in diese Datei schon einmal die Vorlage Template:Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe eingefügt. Dabei ist jedoch irgendetwas kaputt gegangen: Ich glaube, es sollte automatisch die Category:Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Sammlung Online eingefügt werden, stattdessen ist da jetzt ein Rotlink, wenn ich das richtig sehe.
  • Außerdem habe ich als Source das Institution:Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg verlinkt. Ist das so richtig?
  • Die Bilddatei aus dem Template:Wiki Loves Music auf der linken Seite ist in der Tat nicht so super. Eigentlich wollte ich jemanden finden, der oder die ein Projektlogo entwerfen kann. Bis dahin muss das Foto als Platzhalter dienen. Ich werde mal versuchen, einen schönen Ausschnitt aus dem Bild zu wählen.
  • Ja, die Category:Wiki Loves Music sollte alle im Rahmen des Projekts hochgeladenen Dateien enthalten und auch die. Ich habe die von dir erwähnten vier Bilder gerade noch mit der Vorlage versehen, vielen Dank für den Hinweis!
  • Der Name für die zweite, noch zu erstellende Vorlage wäre "PD-Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg". Der Text wäre dieser hier:

Ah, es wird kein institutioneller Account angelegt. Da gibt es nämlich gelegentlich Probleme, weil so etwas im Enwiki verboten ist. Wegen der Kategorie: ich habe das etwas anders gelöst, s. Special:Diff/246752366 (Update: und mich später zum Teil revidiert, weil ich nicht richtig hingesehen hatte, Special:Diff/246759213). Zusätzlich musste die Kategorie selbst auch noch einsortiert werden: Special:Diff/246752127 (links Kategorisierung, rechts Sortierung, die ich erst vergessen hatte). Übrigens galt das gleiche mit einer weiteren Kat., in die die Cembalo-Datei einsortiert ist, nämlich 1728 instrument productions. Und die Institutionsvorlage für die Quelle zu verwenden hielten schon Leute in über 14000 anderen Dateien für sinnvoll, also ja, kann man so machen. Gedacht ist es wohl eigentlich für Standort (Parameter location) oder, äähm, Institution in Informations-Vorlagen, die sie besitzen. Für die vom Museum hochgeladenen Bilder bietet sich da übrigens {{Photograph}} an. Mir war noch eine Frage wegen einer Verlinkung der Lizenzbedingungen eingefallen, aber das hat sich durch Dein letztes Posting ja von selbst erledigt. — Speravir – 22:28, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

Template:PD-Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg ist angelegt. Jetzt heißt es warten, bis es zur Übersetzung freigegeben wurde. In der Hoffnung, dass es schneller geht, habe ich Hedwig in Washington angesprochen, aber es kann natürlich sein, dass sie ausgerechnet jetzt temporär nicht aktiv ist. Ein paar Kleinigkeiten: Nimm {{photo}} (oder {{i18n/photo}}, ergibt das Gleiche) statt Photograph. Zu Instrument gibt es keine Übersetzungsvorlage, aber vermutlich ist das neutrale {{i18n/object}} sogar besser. Oder: Ich zwar schon auf {{Photograph}} hingewiesen, aber sieh dir auch {{Art Photo}} an. Zu {{PD-Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg}} hätte ich aber noch einige Fragen:
  • Wenn, wie Du es ja auch oben geschrieben hattest und im Cembalo-Bild zu sehen ist, alle Bilder CC0-lizenziert werden sollen, können wir die CC0-Lizenzvorlage auch integrieren. Soll sie dann wie im Beispiel als erstes erscheinen? Habe ich jetzt so vollzogen. — Speravir – 21:19, 8 June 2017 (UTC)
  • „fair use Empfehlungen“ kann meiner Meinung nach so nicht stehen bleiben. Reicht “Fair-Use-Empfehlungen“? Ach so, ich sehe gerade … übrigens ist jetzt auch im Deutschen der Link zur englischen Seite vorhanden, das ist eine der Schwächen der Translate-Extension: Ich könnte den deutschen Link http://sammlungonline.mkg-hamburg.de/de/nutzung auch direkt setzen, dann muss das aber später bei einer Änderung wieder genauso individuell geändert werden, und man muss das vor allem erst einmal wissen, dass dies notwendig ist. Nachtrag zur Klarstellung: Die Schwäche ist Letzteres. Ohne Erweiterung bekommt man eine Änderung in einer Sprache auch nicht so einfach mit, aber da kann man das wissen.

Nachdem ich Deine Anfrage an der Village Pump gesehen habe und obwohl Oursana mittlerweile tatsächlich auf {{Art Photo}} umgestellt hat: Stimmt schon, eigentlich ist {{own}} für Quellenangaben gedacht, im Autorenfeld wird der Name explizit angegeben, also hier [[User:Gnom|Gnom]] oder sogar [[User:Gnom|$DeinEchterName]], das macht bspw. Dein Juristenkollege Code so. Die Fragen von oben bleibent aktuell, allerdings fiel mir wegen der Lizenz ein, dass es wohl wirklich besser ist, den Lizenzbaustein als erstes zu setzen. — Speravir – 18:09, 8 June 2017 (UTC)

  • Die "Doppelvorlage" für die Lizenzierung ist wunderbar so, glaube ich.
  • Außerdem ist auf der Bildbeschreibungsseite des Cembalos zwischen der Museums- und der Wiki Loves Music-Vorlage noch so eine komische Lücke. Könnt ihr sehen, woran das liegt?

Die Lücke war dadurch verursacht, dass vor dem <noinclude> noch ein Zeilenumbruch war, nun habe ich <onlyinclude>…</onlyinclude> genommen, wie Du bemerkt hast. Ich habe mich letztens zufällig genau darüber mit dem PerfektenChaos unterhalten; sonst hätte ich sicher etwas länger benötigt, den Fehler zu finden. Ob es „Fair-Use-Empfehlungen“ heißen kann, solltest Du besser wissen. Das Problem mit dem Weblink kann eigentlich nur vom Webmaster des Museums-Website sinnvoll gelöst werden. Ein anderes unschönes Problem kannst Du auf Hedwigs Disk.-Seite verfolgen und mit der Darstellung bei dir vergleichen, siehe User talk: Hedwig in Washington#) Bitte zur Übersetzung freigeben ab meinem „’Tschulljung …“ (wird automatisch 30 Tage nach dem letzten Beitrag archiviert).
Unabhängig davon sollte nun klar sein, dass das Hochladen selbst der einfachste Teil ist, die Beschreibung und das Kategorisieren benötigen mehr Zeit. Man kann natürlich auch erst einmal einen Schub hochladen und sich dann in Ruhe dem anderen widmen. — Speravir – 17:53, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
