Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:42, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

File:Vatikan City 2012 Milan.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |

Images of Euro coins[edit]
Please stop uploading images of Euro coins. The national sides of Euro coins are, with few exceptions, copyrighted to the nations of origin. See Commons:Currency for more information. I am going through all of your coin uploads right now and tagging them as I find them. I'll post more about this later. In the mean time, please stop uploading these images. Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:32, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
I have tagged the following images for deletion as copyright violations:
- File:Austria 2012 Euro Coins.jpg
- File:Belgium 2012 Euro Coins.jpg
- File:Cyprus 2012 Euro Coins.jpg
- File:Italy 2011 Italian Unification.jpg
- File:Italy 2012 Giovanni Pascoli.jpg
- File:Italy 2012 Euro Coins.jpg
- File:France 2011 World Music Day.jpg
- File:France 2012 Abbé Pierre,jpg.jpg
- File:France 2012 Euro Coins.jpg
...more coming. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:41, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
38 of your 39 Euro coin uploads have now been tagged for speedy deletion as copyright violations. The only exception is File:Finland 2012 Helene Schjerfbeck.jpg, which per Commons:Currency#Finland is acceptable. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:24, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Thank you, --Hammersoft (talk) 15:43, 10 January 2013 (UTC)

Blocked[edit]

- If you agree to stop uploading copyrighted, non-free license images such as national sides of Euro coins, I will ask for you to be unblocked. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:02, 10 January 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Hammersoft, could you ask for me to be unblocked, please? I wouldn't like to remain persona non grata at Commons. As I told you ( see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Gerd.Seyffert), I have no intention to cause any more problems, and the ones which occured were not on purpose. Regards--Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 08:49, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
- Your block expired about 7 hours after you posted this. If you have any problems, let me know. Happy to help. --Hammersoft (talk) 21:23, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

- Thanks, Hammersoft! No problem whatsoever besides the problem how to make the Eurocrats realise that there is an absurd legal situation concerning the copyright of national Euro coin's images. Germany for example mints up to 30 million of each of its 2 Euro commemorative coins, publishes the images - and still there should be a copyright violation if somebody publishes a scan of it's image? Are Finland and Estonia the only Euro-countries without restrictions? I would like to get the ball rolling... Could you possibly pass me some detailed information about existing countrywise restrictions? I would like to inform the German National Bank first. Keep going, --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 23:16, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
- It might seem absurd on the face of it, but there are things that cloud the waters. For example, many of the national sides of Euro coins contain original works of art. These original works are frequently things the artists have been paid for to produce. Copyright gets very complicated in such cases. The number of reproductions of something has no effect on its copyright status. The best place to start is Commons:Currency. There you will find a list of all countries for which we have confirmed copyright status of their currency (be it free or not). Finland and Estonia are free to use. There are at least two other cases (France and Germany) where the case is questionable. But, we can't post the Euro coin images here from either country without actual confirmation they are free. We can't assume. --Hammersoft (talk) 14:31, 25 January 2013 (UTC)

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. And also:

File:European Union commemorative 2 euro coins by number.png[edit]
Hello. Could you please update this file? There have been a lot of changes since your last update. Thanks in advance! Comandante~nlwiki (talk)
- There were just two edits relevant for the map: from Estonia on March 9th and from Spain on 23 March. Sorry for the moderate delay... --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 15:51, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you for the adjustment. But what about Latvia (who have just like Estonia 13), Malta (who have 22) and Slovenia (who have 17)? Comandante~nlwiki (talk) 17:03, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
- You are absolutely right! I missed the changes of Malta on 2 August, Latvia on 20 and Slovenia on 25 Oct. 2021... Just uploaded a new file and hope the rest is okay! Very grateful for your supervision! --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 17:55, 2 April 2022 (UTC)
- Hello. Could you please update this file again? Belgium, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, Greece & Portugal need an adjustment. Again thanks in advance! Comandante~nlwiki (talk) 17:40, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Sorry, I did not realize that I wasn't logged in - so whenever I tried to update since 1 July it read "you cannot override this file"... The penny dropped eventually. and the updates are done now. I will also make the colour 33 to 36 coins visible. --Gerd.Seyffert (talk) 18:12, 15 July 2022 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:2. Update Vatikanstadt.png
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:2. Update Vatikanstadt.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
