Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Watermarks

Dear Ies, The picture you cite is a mural on the outside of a Museum of the Xinle Civilization in the People's Republic of China, which as Right of Panorama under their copyright law. So, I am not understanding the wartermark issues you mention because other than the mural, in socialist realism style, there is no symbol. Please explain. Geraldshields11, this has nothing to do with the content of the image, here a museum. I'm referring to the watermarks / timestamps, "09/19/2012" in case of File:Xinle culture 358.JPG, that unfortunately disfigure your images and make them almost unuseable. -- Ies (talk) 16:36, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Dear Ies, I figured out how to use software to crop the date from the pictures. I will upload the new photos. Please would you give me tips or pointers on how to replace the already uploaded photos with new photos without retyping the information or changinging the file name? As I see you learned a lot meanwhile. And you learned quick. Congratulations! Still puzzling for you seems that it takes a while for Commons to display the newly uploaded images. Make a refresh (click tab ""purge" or press F5 in case of a Windows system) after the new upload to enforce the current image display. Dear Ies, Thank you for the compliment. Yes, the purge tip will come in handy. I kept seeing the date stamp even though I uploaded the cropped picture. It was very surprising and I thought I did something wrong that is why I have multiple uploads. I switched off the timestamp feature. :)

Please would you suggest English language books on photography that you either wrote or recommend? I got a portrait photo book but it is for subjects who pose. I plan to attend seminars or discussions to take photos of VIPs and add to the article. See Sunye and talk page as an example. Also, Ri Sol-ju article's talk page. I plan to take outdoor photos of monuments and corporate signs.

I was thinking about a Sony Alpha NEX5RK digital camera with a E 18-mm f/3-5.6 OSS len and a 55-210 mm zoom len as my next purchase. I'm afraid I can't help you now. I neither know a photography book in English language nor the Sony Alpha NEX5RK camera. But I found some test results regarding this camera published over here that reach from "good" to "excellent". Particularly it's low noise and its high dynamic range is praised. On November 11, 2012, I went to a panel on Red Detachment of Women. Three of the members have artices but no picture. One member of the panel posed for his picture for me. What is open source?

In the late 20th century, cultural practitioners began to adopt the intellectual property licensing techniques of free software and open-source software to make their work more freely available to others, including the Creative Commons.

In contrast to free culture, proponents of open-source culture (OSC) maintain that some intellectual property law needs to exist to protect cultural producers. Yet they propose a more nuanced position than corporations have traditionally sought. Instead of seeing intellectual property law as an expression of instrumental rules intended to uphold either natural rights or desirable outcomes, an argument for OSC takes into account diverse goods and ends.

One way of achieving the goal of making cultural work generally available is to maximally utilize technology and digital media. In keeping with Moore's law's prediction about processors, the cost of digital media and storage plummeted in the late 20th Century. Consequently, the marginal cost of digitally duplicating anything capable of being transmitted via digital media dropped to near zero. Combined with an explosive growth in personal computer and technology ownership, the result is an increase in general population's access to digital media. This phenomenon facilitated growth in open-source culture because it allowed for rapid and inexpensive duplication and distribution of culture. [2]

What is copyright, and how does this interact with public domain?

Copyright initially was conceived as a way for government to restrict printing; the contemporary intent of copyright is to promote the creation of new works by giving authors control of and profit from them.

Most jurisdictions recognize copyright limitations, allowing "fair" exceptions to the creator's exclusivity of copyright, and giving users certain rights.

The development of digital media and computer network technologies have prompted reinterpretation of these exceptions, introduced new difficulties in enforcing copyright, and inspired additional challenges to copyright law's philosophic basis. Simultaneously, businesses with great economic dependence upon copyright have advocated the extension and expansion of their copy rights, and sought additional legal and technological enforcement. What is DNS?

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical distributed naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network.

By design, all domain name servers world-wide should contain identical lists; with the blocking changes proposed, servers inside the United States would have records different from their global counterparts, making URLs less universal.

One concern expressed by network experts is that hackers would offer workarounds to private users to allow access to government-seized sites, but these workarounds might also jeopardize security by redirecting unsuspecting users to scam websites. Supporters of the bill, such as the MPAA, have argued that widespread circumvention of the filtering would be unlikely.

Users might go to unregulated alternative DNS systems, and hindering the government from conducting legitimate Internet regulation. MAFIAAFire Redirector, a software extension for the Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome web browsers, redirects links from domains that have been seized by governments to backup sites, in order to bypass the blocking.
