Tip: Categorizing images[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 10:42, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

SVG files[edit]
Thanks for the maps your are uploading! However, if your graphics software can output SVG files, please upload those to Commons too. See Commons:Media for cleanup for details. Thanks! Morn the Gorn (talk) 20:09, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi Gd21091993,
have you been in the Indochina war? If not, what is the source of these photos? In case you didn't know already, scanning an existing photo, shot by somebody else, doesn't make you the author. As these photos were likely shot by a soldier, he retains copyright until 70 years after his death. In addition, all images were wrongly dated. The date entry is for the date when the photo was shot, not when the file was uploaded. --Túrelio (talk) 15:06, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
- copied over from my talkpage to keep the discussion at one place: photo became of my grand father. He did the Indochina War then this is his photo. What is you problem ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gd21091993 (talk • contribs) 19:23, 15. Mai 2010 (UTC)
- All this is not my problem, but it is your task as the uploader to provide correct copyright and authorship information and correct licensing. In case you are not the legal copyright holder of these photos, you cannot license them as PD-self. I can only try to help you with this.
- 1) authorship: if your grandfather shot these photos, then he is the author and you have to put his name (not yours) in the author field. If your grandfather did not shoot these photos by himself, you are not allowed to upload them because even if the photographer died in 1954, his photos would be likely protected until 2024.
- 2) if your grandfather is still alive, you should (out of courtesy) at least ask him for his permission to publish these photos and you should state in the image description that you, the uploader, are his grandson. If your grandfather is already dead, then you have to ask his heir(s) for a written permission and get it sent to OTRS. If you are the only heir of your grandfather, then you should state that in the image description, such as "uploader is the grandson and only heir of the photographer".
- 3) you didn't address my question about the date (year) when these photos were shot. As you likely scanned them from paper prints, you might look to their backside for a date information. --Túrelio (talk) 18:20, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
@Gd21091993, did you paint this portrait? Otherwise, don't claim it as "own" work, and please add the name of the painter. Also, the license is likely wrong. If you are not the painter, you cannot claim copyright over a public domain painting. --Túrelio (talk) 08:36, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
File source is not properly indicated: File:LOUIS de St ALOUARN 1.jpg[edit]
This media was probably deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:LOUIS de St ALOUARN 1.jpg, was missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. The file probably has been deleted. If you've got all required information, request undeletion providing this information and the link to the concerned file (
[[:File:LOUIS de St ALOUARN 1.jpg]] ).
If you created the content yourself, enter If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

- Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
- State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
- If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
- Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
- Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.
If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.
It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.
You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.
Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.
Thank you. This message was added automatically by Nikbot, if you need some help about it, ask its master (Filnik) or go to the Commons:Help desk. --Filnik 18:20, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi Gd21091993,
the location of the former Guangzhou Wan territory is not shown in the correct place on this map. The location you've marked is the Hong Kong territory. The Guangchou Wan territory was situated on the peninsula of Leizhou nearby to Hainan island. Best wishes 89.244.81.83 19:38, 28 December 2011 (UTC)

You are a regular contributer of maps to wikimedia. You might be interested in this new site called ChronoAtlas.com. The interactive historical atlas of the world.
The site allows you to browse the entire globe at any point in history and see boundaries changing over time and cities and other features appearing on the map at the time they were founded. The site is also 100% interactive, you can contribute your own data: meaning your own cities, battles, and photos of historic places and events, and you can also draw boundaries of any historical kingdom you want, or edit those drawn by others if they are inaccurate. Thanks and let me know what you think of the site. Gmann101 Gmann101 (talk) 22:14, 30 January 2012 (UTC) |
File:Drapeau polynesie.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.
If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues. |
