Hello, FunkMonk/Archive!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

FunkMonk, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Congratulations on your 100% approval rate ;), and thanks for helping! Patrícia msg 20:25, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Gratulasjoner og velkommen fra meg også. På kort tid har vi tredoblet antallet danskspråklige administratorer her, det er dejligt! Finn Rindahl (talk) 22:03, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Renaming

Hi Funky. Firstly, congratulations on becoming an admin!!! Now that you're an admin do you have the power to rename images? I have two images that I'd prefer renamed; File:Mantellisaurus atherfieldensis Steveoc86.jpg changed to somthing like File:Dollodon bampingi Steveoc86.jpg and File:Melanrosaurus readi steveoc.jpg changed to File:Melanorosaurus readi steveoc.jpg (mispelled, forgot an O). If it's too much trouble it's not that important. Cheers! Steveoc 86 (talk) 23:41, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, and yeah, I have the powah! You can too, but it's a bit of a slow process, you have to tag the image with this (you can see it in the edit text): target name, and then a "trusted user" has to confirm it, a bot will replace the original image every place it is used, upload the image under another name, and then someone will have to delete the original image. Can actually take months, but I'll do it right now! FunkMonk (talk) 17:23, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I see you had already done that. I've uploaded the files with new names and replaced them where they were used[1][2], but the thing with renames is that older versions in the "file history" won't be transferred to the page of the moved file. So tell me if you want to save the older versions, then I'll just delete them after you've done it. And feel free to tell me when you want something else done! FunkMonk (talk) 17:40, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Hi funky! Thanks for that. User Kevmin tried it a few months ago but it needed aproval from a trusted user. Shortly after I wrote the message on your talk page Kevmin re-added the tags. Regarding the history, I don't mind if it goes. One other thing, at the botton of my user page there are two work in progress images and two bruhathkayosaurus images. I'd prefer if they were removed, the WIPs have no purpose and the bruhathkayosaurus are misleading. I tried to get them deleted once before but they were kept. Commons:Deletion requests/Images uploaded by user User:Steveoc 86 Is it possible you could remove them? I don't think ther are being used. Thanks. Steveoc 86 (talk) 18:02, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
The editor who voted "keep" said "Unless there are more exports on dinosaurs who think this should be deleted?--", and I'm probably the closest the admin staff here gets to a dinosaur expert, heheh. Deleted one Bruhathkayosaurus image as a duplicate of the other, and the Argentinosaurus image is rather out of scope[3], since it is merely an unfinished, hypothetical sketch which isn't used anywhere and most likely shouldn't, since it could be misleading. The guideline says it can be deleted because it is a "Self-created artwork without obvious educational use" and is not "realistically useful for an educational purpose"). The remaining Bruhathkayosaurus image could be deleted for the same reason, but just to be safe since the previous version is a good drawing, you're sure it could not just be modified a bit and be used to illustrate the titanosaur genus it is based on (or another well known one) instead of Bruhathkayosaurus? 22:18, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for deleting those!! Good Idea with the bruhathkayosaurus image. If I get time I'll modifly it into somthing else. Steveoc 86 (talk) 12:49, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks, and I forgot to mention that I'll of course change the filename of that image too, if the subject changes identity. I did that with the image I drew of Nothronychus too, when I saw AW had already drawn the same one, just changed it so it could illustrate Suzhousaurus instead, hehe. deleted categories

You deleted Category:Theropoda images and some similar categories. But those categories weren't empty. Please use User:CommonsDelinker/commands to re-categorize all files before you delete the category and please fix that for the categories you deleted. --Slomox (talk) 11:22, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

Yep, I was going to do it manually though, but do I use the rename category feature then? And is there a way to get a bot to just remove all instances of that category, because there really shouldn't be files in their equivalents (only sub-cats), they're too unspecific. FunkMonk (talk) 14:58, 19 April 2009 (UTC)

deleted image

Hello! Why did you deleted [4]. Where do you know that this ist copyrighted design from? thanks --Trexer (talk) 19:21, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi, this deletion is not so recent, but please, please add a link to the replacing image in your deletion summary. More generally, include a link to the reason of the deletion (DR, proof of copyvio, etc.). Thanks. --Eusebius (talk) 19:22, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

 • Oh yeah, that was an early delete, I'm a new admin on Commons, so I screwed a few things up the first few days. But I'm still not sure how to make links in edit summaries. Could you explain it? FunkMonk (talk) 19:35, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
I have screwed up quite a number of things myself... Well, when you delete a file, you have two input fields: the dropdown list, from which you choose "duplicated or superseded by", for instance, and a free text list, where you can put :File:Other image.jpg, for instance, or simply an URL, without any brackets, for external links. --Eusebius (talk) 09:23, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
Ah, thanks, I've been wondering about that for a while. I'll try it out next time. FunkMonk (talk) 11:35, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi FunkMonk, the uploader of this image which was deleted by you asked me whether I would undelete it. I declined as you can see here. However, I wondered why you concluded that this photograph had been published in Germany first. And I noticed that this image was not tagged before and that you did not notify the uploader. I think it is an important courtesy to the uploader to notify him that an image is filed for deletion or just got speedily deleted. Otherwise it might be hard for the uploader to notice the deletion after some extended time period when it is no longer on watchlist. I further recommend to tag images or to open regular deletion requests for anything that must not be deleted most urgently. In my experience it can be quite beneficial to open regular DRs in case of older photographs as this invites more input by non-admins who can help researching a case. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 21:51, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

Oh yeah, for some reason I thought I had read the first image I deleted was published in Leipzig, but I knew it was published in 1939 in the west, and not in Yemen, so it was not PD in any case, since Carleton Coon died less than 70 years ago. As for notifying the uploader, I thought that should only be done when there was uncertainty about the copyright status, and not when the image was a clear copyvio, since I've seen others delete copyvios on sight. But I'll do it from now, I can see why it would be a good idea to notify. FunkMonk (talk) 22:23, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
I just remembered that there's a problem with many of the Middle Eastern PD templates though, which has fooled me too in the past, and that is that they usually say that "this image was created" in a specific country, and is therefore in the PD. What should really be written instead is published, since "created" could mean that it was just taken there, which is not the case. FunkMonk (talk) 22:54, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
Hi FunkMonk, I agree with you that due to the Berne Convention the country of the first publication is of interest, not where the work was created, see article 5, section 4. Whenever you encounter such templates, you should raise this issue at Commons talk:Licensing and the template talk page. Regards, AFBorchert (talk) 05:22, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

File:Giant ground sloth Iowa.JPG

Why was this deleted without notification or discussion? Billwhittaker (talk) 17:21, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Hmmm, must have been something with the pop-ups when I nominated it (from another computer). I see at least the file itself was tagged, and a deletion entry for it was created too, but is everything else missing? In any case, it was a copyright violation according to US law. FunkMonk (talk) 17:24, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Please reinstate. I took the photo with my camera and licenced it properly in English Wikipedia. It was deleted without any notification or discussion. You might be confused about deletion tags, when something is moved to Commons it is typically tagged and deleted from WP, but the commons version is to remain. Also reinstate it on the WP pages you deleted it from. Billwhittaker (talk) 17:31, 19 May 2009 (UTC)
Again, this was a clear copyright violation, hundreds of images like it have been previously deleted. Only problem here is that you weren't notified when it was deleted, but the deletion itself was justified. The model/sculpture was an artistic reconstruction of an animal, and there is no freedom of panorama in the US, which means that the image was not free, see this[5]. Scientific names

Hi funk,

just wanted to drop a friendly reminder about scientific name formatting. Please remember that the Genus name is always capitalized while the species name is always lowercase. I have noticed several of you recent uploads have had both capitalized. Thanks --Kevmin (talk) 04:14, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

Oh yeah, that's only because I've copied the names directly from Flickr without changing them, sometimes they're wrong, and sometimes not, but I should maybe look after them a bit more carefully. And another problem is that the images from Flickr don't end up on my watchlist when I upload them with the bot, so I have a hard time finding them again sometimes. FunkMonk (talk) 04:24, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
Not ending up on the watchlist is definitely a drawback. Thanks for all the work finding the images! on a side note I received an email reply from the Smithsonian regarding the Dioramas. Ill post the relevent pints in the deletion requests.--Kevmin (talk) 05:35, 9 June 2009 (UTC)
