SVG requests

Re: many of your SVG requests (such as Image:Cross-Fourchee-Heraldry.png etc.) -- in most cases, I provide the PostScript vector source right on the image page, so the SVG is almost there, but I'm not uploading actual SVG files unless <title> elements are taken off of the ban list. I filed a bug-report over a month ago ( http://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4388 ), but nothing has been done on it, and I'm not sure where else to complain... Technically, by posting the SVGs on the image description page you have released them under the GFDL, entitling others to remove these elements if they so desire. But this may be in bad faith. Deco 04:25, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Hi Eugene. I see you (quite rightly) tagged quite a few of this user's images as {{Unknown}}. Did you think to leave a note on this user's talk page? They have uploaded dozens of pictures now, and really should have been stopped and made to understand the Commons requirements, before uploading so many. Also marking a change like that as "minor" and not putting an edit summary, is not very helpful. If someone has legitimate pictures but just doesn't understand what information to put, we should give them as much chance as possible to get it right before deleting their images.

Now, this user, I'm not sure about. some of their contributions are quite strange (like this one - licensed under Creative Commons by who, I have to wonder?). But some could be legitimate. But I guess we won't know until they start explaining where the images are from.

Video from the Kremlin website

Hello. I understand that we have a template for images from the Kremlin website, I think it is called {{Kremlin.ru}}. While it works for images, I wonder how it will work for videos or video clips. The reason why I ask is that I want to take some clips from a video released by the Kremlin website of Putin's 2006 New Years Address. In the video, Gimn Rossii plays and there are shots of the RU Presidental standard and of the Russian Flag. I want to use those clips on the article on the Russian hymn on EN. Can I do that or no? Hello. I appreciate the efforts put to keep the licence politics. But what is the case with the album covers. I have upload the same images like those in english wikipedia [1] and [2] , but have not been able to find suitable template for that kind of licence in commons. I was writing a translation to Portuguese about Manuel Quintana when I've found, in his image (at [[image:Manuelquintana.jpg]]) an information of "unknown copyright status". When I saw the copyright tags available, I'd thought that the best ones could be {{PD-Argentina}}, because it has more than 25 years since it was taken (the man has died in 1906!), or even a tag that said "it's copyright has expired", because, as he had died in 1906 and we are in 2006, there's been 100 years, time enough to expire a copyright anywhere. I did not modify the tag because I don't know which one is more apropriate in this case.

What a shame... so sorry i didnt see that, i'll have more attetion next time. All images name and resolution original fixed, not all by me, i see that other ppl already changed some of them. Vector-Images.com can only license the EPS file as-is. That Copyright notice applies only to original works.

As the coat of arms itself is public domain, vector-images.com can only license the exact vector image that they created without modification. As soon as we converted this image to SVG, it reverted to the original license. That would be silly. Whatever answer they give you will be in their own interest. They will tell you they own the copyright because you may send them money to secure your use of it. But the Russian COA is ineligible for copyright because it's a Public Domain image. No matter who created the graphic. You cannot copyright a Coat of Arms belonging to another entity. I use the raw file name because I am not englishi native speaker, so it will cost me much time to work out a resonalble file name, so I use the original one. I think file name is not nesseccery, because we have search and category function. I does not put some english description,too. so it may made it very difficult to others use this image.

Chemical structures in SVG format

Hi Eugene. I'll add my images to categories when I get the time. But as for SVG vs. PNG, I can't create SVG files from Photoshop Elements which I use, and also, the Wikiproject on Chemistry suggests uploading chemical structures as hi-res PNGs, so that's what I'm doing.

I don't have CorelDRAW. I downloaded Inkscape, but it requires me to install X11 and I don't have the space for all that on my laptop. Gchemical only runs on Linux, which I don't have either. So I can't upload my images as SVG. Should I not upload any images anymore if I can only make PNGs?

Tagging images 'screenshot' 'logo' etc

Hi Eugene...

I look at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion and I always notice images that you have tagged there. So I just wanted to say thanks for doing all this work and for always notifying the uploader.

But I wonder why you don't delete them yourself...? Since you're an admin... If we delete such images as early as possible, hopefully we can delete them before other people start using them.

I don't know an exact date when whis logo has been created (I suppose that in 1950). However it was for sure the logo of Wyższa Szkoła Inżynierska (previous name of Politechnika Radomska) in 1993 when I started my studies there. The same I can guarantee it was created before 1994. I'm converting some PNG images to vector images in Fireworks, to export to Freehand later. But in Freehand there's no possible save the file as SVG, so I must save it in .fh11 or .eps. Logos of Ukrainian political parties

Hello Eugene! You tagged some logos of Ukrainian political parties for speedy deletion. Are you sure, that these logos are not included in {{PD-UA-exempt}}? I think, that "d) ... symbols and signs of enterprises, institutions and organizations" applies here. Shouldn't we bring this case to Commons:Deletion requests? Hi! It sounds logical to me, that logos of political parties should be copyrighted. Otherwise everybody, who has founded a new party, could adopt the logo of another very popular party and use it for campaigning. However, the text in {{PD-UA-exempt}} is ambivalent to this point. There is mentioning of the state at the beginning, but I am not sure, if this also applies at the end. E.g. enterprises are listed, and for me it is unlikely, that logos of private enterprises should be protected, but logos of state enterprises should not be. Would it be possible to check the original text of this law and, if necessary, improve the text in {{PD-UA-exempt}}? --Franz Xaver 16:24, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi Eugene, regarding these images, they have been sitting in CAT:CSD for a while now -- I think you should delete them. It is better that you delete them than another admin because you can read them and understand what they are and why they're copyvios. Hello, EugeneZelenko. I upload the images small 'cause the file size is smaller and 'cause if you click on the image you go to here, where you can resize the image. Also it is bigger in the article's galleries. Anyway I'll make the next pictures bigger.

Respect the background, it only appears in the image page, but in Traffic sign#Señales de prioridad: and in Señales de prioridad (the picture is the STOP sign) you can see it correctly. So, I think the problem is not the picture. Perhaps the problem is the Wikipedia server. I don't know. Do you know how I can repear it?

Regarding Image:LocationBangladesh.png

This image was incorrect (link to discussion) - the borders were skewed. A decision was reached to upload a new one with the errors corrected. The corrected image was uploaded to Image:Location-Bangladesh.png - but this has resulted in two really similar images. I think I should've contacted you earlier about this before uploading... but, well, I forgot. Sorry.

So one of them has to be deleted now. Either the old image needs to be re-uploaded with the correct version or it has to be deleted. If you re-upload the corrected image, the file Location-Bangladesh.png can be deleted, which is fine by me. What do you think? Sheehan 02:20, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

No More "Fair Use"?

There used to be a "Fair Use" option under licensing, is it no longer available? I posted the question at the Talk page of the image as well: [Image talk:TcsLogo.gif]. Did it change latetly? Commons since beginning allow only images which anybady could use for any purposes. This automatically excludes all fair use, non commercial, non derivative content. See Commons:Licensing for details.

So please upload logos, CD covers and etc. on English Wikipedia.

The benefits of my addition are many.

• Multilingual navigation to wiki articles on Zhukov
• Multiingual descriptions of Zhukov
• When google and MSN search commons properly, sufficient text will be on this page that people can find it using terms from their native language. Actually, there should be even more in the case of a man who was arguably the greatest tank commander of WWII. Consider the variations:
  • گئورگی ژوکوف
  • ჟუკოვი, გეორგი
  • ジューコフ
  • Jukov
  • Zjukov
  • Żukow
  • 朱可夫

This is a great photo. It doesn't do any good if no one can find it, or if it is regarded as no more than a pretty decoration to a forgotten person. Transwikis mean people will find it. Interwikis means they will know what it is when they find it. Both are extremely valuable. If I understood your objection though, perhaps I could address it with mutually acceptable changes?

Regarding the translated more information text: You are correct. Unique text for images is best. So if I were to suppress the captions for which there are already unique text in a particular language, would that be satisfactory? Isn't some text in an alternate language better than no text at all? BTW- if you are concerned about the clutter of the extra languages, Dbenbenn has a nice little thing so that you will only see the language(s) you are interested in.

I understand the weakness of "repeated" "generic" text. However consider the case of searching for Krushchev and Gagarin. How will they ever get a search hit on a large picture using Google Image search. Impossible. The text for both must be on the image page for the search to work. And what if the person searching uses a transliteration different than the one that is commonly used for english? You know Russian- Does K make any sense at all? It's about as weird as tranliterating Hawaii into Гавайи, or Firenze into Florence. Or Wien into Vienna. And these are proper names that really ought to be invariant across languages. But consider ordinary nouns. What if someone wants to search for pictures of a giraffe and a lion? What I am pointing out here is that gallery and category pages are inherently incapable of addressing this issue of internet searching with multiple terms, or with languages other than english. This solution addresses that, but I would like to address its weaknesses if I could. Thanks for your advice in advance.

Lastly, even though it is far from ideal, the generic text is not utterly valueless for information purposes. If someone winds up on a Commons page due to a search, they may not understand anything about how to navigate to category and gallery pages for further information, or even what the significance of the image is.

Just take this picture as example. It's relevant to both Georgy Zhukov and Red Square. So based on your idea we should place templates (completely unrelated) for both terms. I don't think I'll want to read such descriptions.

Again, relevancy of search result will be worse. For example, if I'll look for Lenin photos, I don't want to see all his monuments.

I think categories and articles on Commons contains enough clues (interwiki included) for search engines. So your templates are definitely redundant.

Explain to me how a user using cyrillic can google for Zhukov and Red square and get a hit on your page. Nowhere does there appear any occurance of Красная or Площадь. Do a few image searches using google on the net. Here is the google image search I describe. One hit. Try to understand why there is a hit. It is because the words are there- not off on some other pages. So I don't know how you imagine how it works, but the search engine has to find the words in a predictable and uniform way that they can apply to all sites. If you want your page to be invisible to search engines, then your position makes sense.

Single sentence text in alternate languages describing pertinent details in an image is not redundancy. It illuminates the user as to what they are viewing in their own language, and provides search targets that internet search engines can readily acquire.

Your wish is for your page remain invisible to the rest of the net. That's fine. Perhaps you can content yourself with the fact that those adept at navigating around Commons may find it. Sorry, but you offer no rebuttal, only a slight. I can only gather from this that you have no arguments to offer. As a suggestion, perhaps at least you could add Красная Площадь to your description. That would be a start at getting exact descriptions for the half million images in what? the 20 major languages. Let's see... 10 million exact descriptions to be remedially applied to the existing set of images. Want to take a guess how many images will be in the database by the time that happens? Anyway, I agree it is not ideal and certainly I will respect your POV for this image, but really. Perhaps you might want to think through this problem a bit more? Some time it might benefit you to understand why the google search found the rather poor photo of Zhukov's red square statue. I agree that the verbosity is an issue- particularly when you consider how many languages it would have to be in. Consider the descriptions for Category:Adolf Hitler for example. I recognize the issue. Anyway I'd like to understand your view a little better though. Is it correct to say that you prefer that text be extremely minimal- like a 6 to 8 word Caption? If text minimalism is the goal, would you oppose having a line of text corresponding to all the major variants of the term "Zhukov"? If you look, you will see that it was I who initiated that VP exchange. The problem is that the Google spider looks at the extention of a page and decides that it does not have to fetch a page named with .jpg ending because it will have no text. A reasonable assumption as part of a perfectly reasonable optimization, but it fails on Commons. Pretty trivial to deal with, so it is hard to make a case that the search text issue is an academic one.

The issue isn't pretty for multilingual sites like ours. If you look at that section discussion you will see that the requirements for such text is that it be nearby the image itself. Usually the summary sentence is pretty concise and covers the essential facts. The English blurb for Zhukov would be "Georgy Konstantinovich Zhukov, GCB (Russian: Гео́ргий Константи́нович Жу́ков) (December 1 [O.S. November 19] 1896–June 18, 1974), Soviet military commander and politician, considered by many as one of the most successful field commanders of World War II." Have you verified that? Try searching for "World War II" "Russian" "Commander". Those terms are all there. Here is a search that would have returned your image as well as many of the german commanders who were ground under the treads of Zhukov's tank forces.image search for wwII russian commanders. Shall we leave this descriptive text for Zhukov out so that users will get only the german commanders? But I press. I do understand that it clutters the presentation a bit and it would be much better if all 10 million descriptions needed were hand tailored for each image. Sure we can toil away and get a few hundred images accurately captioned. But that doesn't make much of a dent on the 10 million required today, and what could easily be triple that a year from now. I don't have any easy solutions. Possibly the best solution is that Google would use keyword meta tags on Commons. This used to be the norm for search engines- long ago html had the ability to hide keywords for search engine use on the page. They weren't displayed, but they were misused by spammers so the Search guys ignore the fields now. Well, if all the text from all these languages could be made invisible, then the text wouldn't junk up the pages. Until Google is persuaded to do the right thing, then we either settle for ugly and searchable, or set the standard at Concise and relevant or not at all, and if the searches fail then so be it. Ugly, or pretty, but invisible. Not great choices.

If I need to look to particular commander, I don't need to add commander and so on. I know the name. It's useless to walk through the heap of unrelated images (please try to think about people who doesn't have fast connection, or slowdown with server (quite often on Commons)).

Just philosophical things: technology can't replace general education. If I don't know something, I need to investigate: read book, article in Wikipedia, browse generic categories here. I don't care if search engine will return stupid result for stupid request.

People use Google to educate themselves, and most education is done outside of classrooms. Knowing your way around the reference section of a library is an essential skill. There are different kinds of searches.

1. Searching for what is known (Zhukov statue, red square),
2. returning information that the user knows is unknown (Russian commanders WWII)
3. returning information that the user does not know is unknown. (WWII Moscow)- intending to find pictures about the defence of moscow, and instead discovering a statue to a Soviet military figure they didn't know about.
   Google searches help with all three. But if you offer very few words on a page, there is much less likelihood that users in the last two categories will find your site.

Sorry, I think this is cultural differences :-) I studied in Soviet school and post-Soviet university. As far as I remember we moved from topic to topic sequentially not random jumps. --EugeneZelenko 19:13, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree technology does not replace education. Technology is part of education. Consider the technology of the Gutenberg press for example. You want to return to education without books? Perhaps we should have books without indexes in them? Because that is effectively what internet search provides. It is not for free with images though. We have to provide target text for the searcher to hit on. Having a practical way of providing that text for 10 million target texts is my objective. Thanks for your time and your thoughts. I do not yet have a mature proposal yet and your comments made me question some of my assumptions.

SVG image won't show

Sorry about forgetting the self-made tags - my computer crashed and I forgot to reset the license info.

I would upload as SVG, and I would like to as it is clearly better, but whenever I do this, some thumbnails don't show on the article page, on Wikibooks or Wikisource, which is the reason I upload them in the first place. They come up with a white and grey checquered background, and you can only actually see the SVG when you click on the link below the preview. For an example, see image:Slope_Field_1.svg. I'm using Adobe SVG viewer with Opera.

If you can tell me what it is I'm doing wrong, then I will be more than willing to use SVG over PNG. In the meantime, I try to make the PNGs large to give extra information. Alos, what is the best font to use for labelling SVG diagrams?

Hi! Thanks for notifying me my fault. Basically I often fail to understand the signicance of each licensing, as I am rather infrequent in wikimedia commons. I see that FlickR uses several types of licemsing, version 2.0. make commercial use of the work" are two basic requirements to upload images in commons. Am I right? And that is irrespective of versions. in FlickR, mostly they use version 2.0, however some are licensed under no derivatives or no commercial use or both. Such images cannot be uploaded in commons. Right? I ask you because this clarification would be very helpful, and I shall not upload images that are not acceptable in commons henceforth. Please help.--Dwaipayanc 14:02, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

As a matter of fact, right now I am writting letters to the authors! The omages relating to Darjeeling are very important as those have been used in wikipedia in the article Darjeeling. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darjeeling). That article is going some major edits, and have plans to run for FAC. Again disturbing you! The author of Image:CoffehouseKolkata12.jpg gave me the permission to use the image in Kolkata aticle of Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolkata) - which is a featured article and contains the image. I guess that is not acceptable here in commons, right? In that case, should I upload it in wikipedia and use the email permission? What do you think? Hey Eugene...I got your message, and I think I have a better understanding now. I tagged both of the images I had uploaded into the Wikimedia Commons for deletion because of copyright violations. Thank you for all of your help, it is very much appreciated, and I apologize for the mistakes!

Hi Eugene! about the deletiion of my images, Sorry I'm pretty news uploading images, but: 1)I'm the copyright holder of the Terror haza Picture 2)For the Italian and San Marino Republic laws, the Party logo's&symbols are of Public Domain the only restriction they have is that no either parties can use the same symbols, names and colors in order to avoid missunderstendig!
