Hi. Can I ask you what made you rename this category by transliterating it? It seemed sensible to use the name that would be used by Bulgarians, since it's a Bulgarian topic, and I assumed Commons, being a multilingual place, had a policy about this. Thanks. Trilobite 15:39, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks for clarifying that. Not sure I agree with the policy. Trilobite 15:49, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well no but I would support having the necessary redirects, and noting on the page like you've done in Category:Nesebar. Thanks anyway. Trilobite 15:57, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tags and categories[edit]

Hi there! I checked out Commons:Copyright tags and I already added in the information needed; thanks for pointing this out. I hope I did it right. --Život

Hi Eugene,

I think I should replace the {{PD}} tag I added to image:Coriolis_effect09.png with the tag {{PD-self}}

I do not understand the copyright situation in wikipedia, and any information about it that I have encountered was incomprehensible to me. I'm baffled. Generally I manufacture drawings and animations myself and I tag them as {{PD-self}}.

Image:coriolis_effect09.png is a bit of an exception. I made the foreground of that picture, the background is an image that I copied from this location, specifically, this image

I have not been able to trace the origin of the image further back. Can you give me advice, would it be OK to tag Image:Coriolis_effect09 as {{PD-self}}?

Currently the english, the Dutch and the Italian article about the coriolis effect use the images I have made. However, for example for the italian article the images have been copied to it.wikipedia.org, rather than relying on the Wikipedia Commons. I do not know whether in the future any version in any language will rely on the images uploaded to the wikipedia Commons. Perhaps I should not have uploaded the images to the Commons. --Cleontuni | Talk 21:15, 18 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not copyrights lawyer either :-) For your own images you are free to choose license compatible with Commons requirement (PD, GFDL, CC-SA, CC-SA-BY, etc.) --EugeneZelenko 03:35, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
This is a serious problem. I am not a copyright lawyer, and I don't want to be a copyright lawyer. I just make the images myself, slap on the tag {{PD-self}} and hope for the best. I understand that wikipedia needs to be vigilant about copyright issues.
I will change the copyright tag of Image:Coriolis_effect09.png to {{PD-self}} I have an inflatable Globe. One of these days I'll inflate it, photograph it, and then I'll rework that image on the computer to get the background I want. --Cleontuni | Talk 05:58, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for uploading images on Commons.

Please add your images to appropriative pages and/or categories where other users could easily find them.

But,I have already put it in the page like XiXiaoRoad,What's Wrong?--Netluck (Talk) 03:31, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
You use it in Chinese Wikipedia. But if somebody will look for such image on Commons, he/she'll unable to find this image. This is reason why you should put your images on pages/categories on Commons also. --EugeneZelenko 03:38, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes!You mean i shall write a page about it then put the image in the page?--Netluck (Talk) 06:13, 19 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you have placed an "unknown" notice on these images. Yet in both cases the poster has announced (in Dutch) that he is the author. -- Picapica 16:29, 28 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Poster did not announce license (see Commons:Copyright tags for more information) . This is exact message of {{Unknown}}. --EugeneZelenko 02:22, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. Just testing the drill. It was simply that the notice seemed to me rather starkly worded, given that the poster has uploaded what he states is his own work to a site that announces itself with the words The Wikimedia Commons is a project that provides a central repository for free images.... Might not adding to the notice that see Commons:Copyright tags for more information phrase (as used in your answer) make it a little less intimidating and considerably more helpful? -- Picapica 12:39, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

List of victims[edit]

What does Wikipedia have to do with anything??? This list was deleted without even having a VFD, making it an invalid deletion. Do I need to have my adminship transferred over to Commons just to handle this nonsense?? --Brian0918 15:15, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The Main page states: "The Wikimedia Commons is a project that provides a central repository for free images, music, sound & video clips and, possibly, texts and spoken texts, used in pages of any Wikimedia project." --Brian0918 15:23, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That's some fairly faulty reasoning. You're saying that even though it says on the main page that Commons accepts text (which you originally did not know it did), that now those texts must be translated into every other language before they can be on Commons? I'm fairly certain that you're pulling at strings with this. The English page is located at the English title of the list. If someone wants to translate it into another language, they can place that language's version at the title in that language. What would you suggest I do to remedy this, since Commons does accept texts. --Brian0918 15:47, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for ignoring all of my previous statements. I'm not the only one who says it should be on Commons. Both the VFD's on Wikipedia and Wikisource say that it should be on Commons. You're all alone on this. You still haven't provided a reason why it shouldn't be on Commons. Can you provide one reason why it shouldn't be on Commons??? --Brian0918 16:00, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

How can you ignore that the main page says: "The Wikimedia Commons is a project that provides a central repository for free images, music, sound & video clips and, possibly, texts and spoken texts, used in pages of any Wikimedia project." It says it accepts text. I've uploaded text. How can you deny this??? You need to provide a valid reason. --Brian0918 16:13, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Where on Commons does it say that texts have to be scans and can't be editable text? You can't just make things up in order to remain contrarian. --Brian0918 16:23, 30 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unknown Status[edit]

Hi, I've just seen that you marked Image:Logo_fa.png as having and unknown copyright status, and reverted it. As you can clearly see in the image's description, it is clear that no one can claim ownership over it, as the mentioned Argentine law states (copyright over logotypes ceases after 5 years of non using it, and Ferrocarriles Argentinos was dissolved in 1991). Perhaps what isn't clear is what license can we give it, but the copyright status is nevertheless out of discussion, and the template only puts is in the road for deletion, something that wouldn't be justified. --Galio 04:27, 9 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

That template reads that the copyright status is unknown, and thus might imply a copyright violation, which is *THE* risk for what images are deleted, right? Well, what is clear about that image, I repeat, is that it definitely can't violate any copyright over it, as they've expired. We could for example put it a GFDL tag if you think so; I was told that the 'fair use' argument isn't accepted here in Commons, but in any case that is the tag that really corresponds.

Hi, I am looking throught the Category:Unknown and found this photo, that you tagged as unknown although it has a CC license. Perhaps the CC license is incorrect, could you clarify? Thuresson 23:15, 11 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Started to categorize and...[edit]

Hi Eugene.

I started today to categorize all my contributions to Commons, and I see that in my earlier times, I uploaded some images with lack of data for an apropiate licensing. Some of them should be deleted, and I've put the "delete" announce in a pair of them. Please, could you delete them? I'm now trying to leave all my contributions as easy to use and find as I can.

Sorry my horrible english and see you soon. Hispa 11:01, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cres and others[edit]

I'm agree, thanks to have change all !! I think I understand how it's function for the categories... like a pyramid, but it's only in one sens (croatia to cities of croatia to cres, and it's no worth to write all the category in every picture, isn't it ?)  !

I don't know if I'm clear because my english is very bad, and cant' follow my think, sorry, bye

Привет. Я кажется нашёл похожую карту, откуда была сосканирована та карта, что я нашёл в интернете. Там действительно есть копирайты Роскартографии и Омской картографической фабрики. Should I use the Family category, or is it were better to use the Genus subcategory whenever present? What if there's no Genus subcategory? For instance, I have a pic of a fungus, Schyzophyllum commune, family Schizophyllaceae. There is no Schyzophyllum genus page - should I create one? I see no uniform criterion, so I would like some guidance. Do I have to check whether there's a genus category, and if not, create one? Or upload to the family category? I have hundreds of pictures to upload, in plants alone. So you see, your answer is very important. - Tintazul 09:19, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have created an SVG version of Image:Vector normalization.png. Thanks for your response and pointing the information out. Yes, this is really confusing to me, I'm still new and not too familiar with all these copyright rules.

So apparently I am allowed though to load that Logo up on the english.wikipedia page, correct? Do you know under what copyright rule it would fall, which tag would I have to put? I don't want to be doing anything wrong.

In that case if Logos are not allowed on the Commons, could you take a look at these images I've uploaded as well:

[Image:Logo vis gross.jpg] [Image:Deutscher filmpreis.jpg]

Do they also not qualify for Commons here? In that case I can load it on the en.wikipedia section, however User talk:AndreasPraefcke told me it cannot be shown in the German Wikipedia? Even if the owner explicitly stated that it can be shown? Hi, this photo ultimately comes from a Belarus web page. The uploader of en:Image:Vladimir Karvat.jpg claims that official government photos are public domain. Is this correct or not? The Belarus copyright law has no such exemption, I believe. Thuresson 15:25, 19 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization: thank you[edit]

I whish to thank you for your message on categorization of Image:Alfa Romeo 146.jpg. I'm going to categorize each of my contributions from now on. Thank you. Amux 11:34, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The first "version" of this image (at 19:55) is actually wrong (It is not a photo of Mari but the citadel in Tripoli, Lebanon) so is it possible somehow to preserve only the second (correct) "version" (20:03) and to remove only the first one? BTW, I am going to upload some Tripoli photos quite soon, I believe. Respond to my discussion page, please. --Heretiq 20:36, 23 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Eugene[edit]

Aren't the informations provided by en:wiki enough to prove that coats of arms like the Austrian coat of arms, the Gdynia flag and Gdynia coat of arms, and so on, enough to prove that they are "free to use"? I've copied all of the images that I've sent here from the en:Wikipedia (see, for example, en:Austria, and you'll see that coat of arms there. THEY ARE NOT FORGED BY ME. If, by a mistake, I've informed a wrong license of image (for example, GDFL instead of "US-Government public image" (if this specification exists, I do not know) and someone else knows the correct one, that person should correct the information, and not erase the image (unless that person wants to prejudice other wikis that point to that image in commons). Sorry for my bad English, because my native language is Portuguese. Would you mind answering me? Thank you. With regards, Joao Xavier 20:36, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Eugene! I've sent you an e-mail a few minutes ago. Bye. With regards, Joao Xavier 22:09, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Joao Xavier downloads flags and COA:s who are tagged as {{coatofarms}} from English Wikipedia, upload them here and tags them as GFDL, which creates a lot of time consuming work for others. Eg. Image:Flaga Gdyni1.PNG was not GFDL and had to be retagged. Thuresson 02:19, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

bajoran ranks[edit]

It is pd because drawing them takes little effort and hence a copyright cannot apply. This is like copyrighting starfleet pips which are basicaly golden circles. Too simple to copyright. Source will be myself. I drew them but I wouldnt be suprised identical images appear on the web as like I said they are to simple of a design. --Cool CatTalk|@ 18:34, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I created Category:Star Trek as you requested. --Cool CatTalk|@ 18:48, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Anything else I can do for you? --Cool CatTalk|@ 18:57, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Everything looks fine now. --EugeneZelenko 15:49, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, sorry for the torbble. --Cool CatTalk|@ 16:34, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Thank you for help. --EugeneZelenko 17:37, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Go ahead and delete these images. Zscout370 21:54, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted. --EugeneZelenko 13:56, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I figured if EN wanted them badly enough, they can just head onto Google, since that was where I found the stamps at. Zscout370 14:28, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Help![edit]

Can you plaese help me again with my discription page at Image:Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin 1994-1.jpg???? -- Yelzin 20:01, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed tag and added this image to Борис Николаевич Ельцин. --EugeneZelenko 20:18, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, now i see what was missing - the :! Thank you!!! -- Yelzin 21:51, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Uah, i messed it up again! Image:LIONELMARTIN.jpg actually shows Robert Bamford. Can help renaming the picture? -- Yelzin 22:43, 26 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately wiki can't rename images. You should upload it again under correct name and mark incorrect image with {{deletebecause|reuploaded under XYZ name}}. --EugeneZelenko 05:20, 27 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

ConvertToSVG[edit]

Hi there! I noticed you've been marking many pages as ifc and saying they should be converted to SVG files. To help keep track of this specific type of cleanup request, I've created the template {{ConvertToSVG}} which briefly explains what needs to be done and adds the image to Category:Images that should use vector graphics, a subcategory of Category:Images for cleanup. I've also added a short explanation at Commons: Images for cleanup. I hope you find this helpful. Deco 04:18, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think this is great idea! --EugeneZelenko 16:58, 1 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Someone is driving me crazy[edit]

A certain User is driving me crazy with duplicate images and bad Categorization with Florida images. I left the user a message on talk page but from what I'm reading English may not help. Bastique 05:04, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

convert svg. image to svg.?[edit]

File:Fhloston.jpg
stressed? come visit Esperanza

Hi there Eugene,

I see you have been adding the template to convert current images into the svg. format. However, why did you do that on Image:Schifffahrtswimpel Austria.svg, it already is in the svg. format, or is there something wrong with it? with kind regards Gryffindor 18:10, 16 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No problema señor. Gryffindor 04:28, 17 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Administrative functions[edit]

I am now an administrator here at Commons. You have been a help and source of information as an administrator while I've been an ordinary user, and I wanted to know if you had any advice to offer along the way. Also, any help you need, please don't hesitate to ask. Bas parler voir 16:27, 25 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I'm finding that people are very free with labeling images {{db}} or {{delete}} or {{deletebecause}}. I'm checking each one on Images for Deletions and leaving messages for the individuals who use the tag incorrectly to refer to COM:DG as to what constitutes. Interesting note: Fred Chess left a message for someone to use {{Delete}} when it was only a copyvio. He's also looking to be a candidate for Admin. Bas parler voir 00:41, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, {{Copyvio}} is more descriptive reason for deletion of copyrighted violations then just {{Delete}} and better message for deletion log. Thank you for notifying other user. --EugeneZelenko 06:02, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

US Routes[edit]

I was just going to do that when I saw the new message indication. Sorry, I can't do it. --SPUI 04:06, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Dude, I'm doing it. Fix your sarcasm detector. --SPUI 04:15, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant flag?[edit]

Ok the problem have been solved when User:Zscout370 removed your notice at Image:Malaya flag large.svg, but even a casual comparision with Image:Flag of Malaysia.svg and the differences would have been immediately apparant. The flag of Malaya has 11 strips and 11 spokes in the star. The flag of Malaysia has 13 strips and 14 spokes. Small difference perhaps to you, but a major difference as far as flag design and several million people are concerned.--Huaiwei 10:48, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the inconvenience, it must have slipped trough. I hope I made not more of these kind of mistakes. But: What would be the correct licence when adding an image which was marked PD-self from a wikipedia other then the english one? (as there is no licence pd-self-by-user-XXX).--Hardscarf 23:30, 28 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Images from Vector-images.com[edit]

Thanks for the correction about the coats of arms. I simply added Copyrighted Free Use when I had to choose a licence during the upload. I didn't think about not listing any of the main licenses. Regards. --Valentinian 16:52, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eugene, you may want to reupload Image:Unknown flower-1.jpg and Image:Unknown flower-4.jpg with a better file name :-) Greetings --Überraschungsbilder 00:06, 1 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks You (Gracias)[edit]

BLS.png -- User:Shesacoustic[edit]

Hi! I am a new user here at Wikipedia and I just got your message about the BLS.png image. I have added more information. Is it sufficient enough now? I am trying to do the best I can, so just let me know if it still is lacking or if it is all right now. Thank you so much!

File:Object sculputre, Camera obscura, 2019.jpg[edit]

Dear Eugene, I am the artist of this piece and all of the modern art uploaded (that you put a comment 'recommended for deletion'), both of the art itself (paintings) and the photos of them. I see you noted that permission is needed, and I will send the e-mail, no problem. Buy I wonder why when I am the author and copyright holder that was your comment? When I upload my work (the photos), I describe them in third person (e.g. this is the typical motif of the artist), was that why you thought they were not mine? Anyhow, I will send the permission mail just in case. I look forward to your response and I hope that my art can stay well.
