Message de bienvenue

[edit]

--Moumine 09:06, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Losslessly croppong JPEGs

[edit]

Thanks for losslessly cropping Image:Dinizulu.jpg. How did you do it? I'd like to be able to do the same thing, but I don't know how to losslessly crop JPEG images. —Remember the dot (talk) 03:45, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(replying to message on my talk page) — thanks for the explanation! Jpegcrop looks good, and I also found a program called ImageWalker that can also losslessly recompress JPEGs (see [1]). However, ImageWalker also seems to suffer from a problem with "blocks" - that is, I had trouble cropping it exactly the way I wanted it. It always seemed to crop a little more or less than I wanted. I suspect it's something about the JPEG format that causes this behavior.

Anyway, it sounds like for small images where lossless cropping won't work, it's probably better to just save them as PNGs and use PNGOUT to reduce the file size. But for images such as Image:Ltaylormug.jpg, Jpegcrop worked great for me.

I did have to go into the Preferences dialog and change it to "Huffman optimized" and turn off "16-Bit Dither (FixPix)" to ensure that the cropped image was as high quality as possible. You might want to read the Preferences explanation page if you haven't done so already.

So, thanks a lot for telling me about Jpegtran! Your explanation wasn't long-winded, it was only long because it gave me a pretty thorough explanation. Thanks again! —Remember the dot (talk) 05:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images to clean up

[edit]

If you have time, please look at :

Graphics abilities-[ Graphic Village Pump-Graphic Lab-Maps-Images ]

I seted up this according to the french one in which I was active. I have other project now, and the Commons graphic lab need some contributors able to wake up it, and lead it for some month. If you have time or know someone who may do this : that's welcome. Yug (talk) 02:57, 7 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please can you improve and then copy/past the following text to the Village Pump. I have to study my final exam, and I will start an Hard wikibreak today (evening), but the Graphic lab is at 95% ready to start. And It would be welcome to do so. The text is :
The Graphic Lab and the Graphic Village Pump aim to transfort commons from an Uplaoders community to a true working graphist community, based on the four graphic skills and interests teams.
The project being starting : please talk everywhere about it. Please request image improvements as well. Active contributors are also really need to lead the project too. We need this to start !
Yug (talk) 08:42, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hello and first : thanks for your "rewording" on the village pump.
Other things, I currently making my last edits for the week, and I made A notification to add a link in the navigation box (please support it). Your several templates and effort to set up a way to improve image decided me to say "Graphic Village Pump Open !". This involvement and similar volonty, and your enthusiasm made me think that you can lead this opening and rise some support (2 other active users/leaders are need). That's why I state you as "Factual & Current leader".
Please add the four pages to your watch list and make what you can. All should be going fine.

Hi Mentor!

[edit]

Hi again! ...

So what can you do on Wikimedia Commons? What's the difference between this and Wikipedia? --Pizza1512 13:01, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Um... Could you define what a fair use image is? If the image is already uploaded on Wikipedia but in a different language, does that mean I can upload it onto Commons without violating any copyright laws, as they are under Wikimedia in general? --Pizza1512 13:13, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I really want a bot for Wikipedia, however some person suggested doing the things on this page Using the python wikipediabot. Unfortunately, I don't actually understand what I'm suppose to be doing. Could you help please? --Pizza1512 19:58, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Bryce Dallas Howard.jpg

[edit]

Hi. I noticed the above image was deleted due to it being a "photographic screenshot copyvio". The image was taken by a photographer at the 2006 San Diego Comic-Con and uploaded to flickr. At that convention, they have celebrities on stage and a large screen to broadcast them live on stage. The photographer seems to have shot the image of the actress on a live screen (while she was on stage), so does that still qualify as a copyvio? Spellcast 13:56, 11 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since screenshots are copyvios, can you also delete Image:Kenan Comic Con 2006 (2).jpg? Thanks. Spellcast 06:03, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, is it a general rule to the scheme "[title] of [country]"? Where could it be found?

If so, I guess that Category:Sculptors of Ancient Greece should be used (rather than “from”). But quite all subcats of Category:Ancient Greece and Category:Ancient Rome follow the scheme Category:Ancient Greek/Roman..., so moving a single cat is not efficient and maybe more confusing than leaving as it is. We need to move all or nothing. But let's be sure before moving of what is the “official” rule, if any.

Regards. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 10:39, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It does not seems so clear: for instance, in Category:People of France by occupation, the main scheme is "[title] from [country]", not "of". Same thing for Germany: Category:Women of Germany but Category:Architects from Germany. As French-speaker, I don't really notice some difference and "of/from" is confusing to me. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 11:09, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Edit conflict with your answer. Read it first. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 11:10, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I see now. But if I follow the guidelines, “National origin people” should use “from”, so your cat is misspelled: it should be Category:People from Ancient Greece, not? Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 11:21, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It seems OK. After thinking to the problem, as "Ancient Greece" is not a country but a cultural area, moving with times, using "of" should be more consistent: location is not the main characteristics of what is called "Ancient Greece", so "from" should not be used.
So I consider that Category:Sculptors of Ancient Greece, Category:Astronomers of Ancient Greece, etc. would be the best choice. Do you agree? Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 12:38, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
PS: note there is also a category Category:Ancient Romans. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 12:40, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There are approximatly 50 cats in Category:Ancient Greece and Category:Ancient Rome that are concerned :/. It will be better to ask a bot to do the job, not?
I propose to make a list of cats to be renamed, you check it, then I ask a bot to do the stuff. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 12:51, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I start to create a full list of cats to rename then. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 12:55, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 14:22, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For “greek mythology” that was a case mistake, I fixed it. For “ancient”, I omit it for “Greek temples” since I consider this term is a fossilized one (see en:Greek temple). I also hesitate for “Greek theaters” but there is actually an ambiguity, so I left “Theaters of Ancient Greece”. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 14:38, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I gonna see the bot in my watchlist :) Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 14:41, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well, I guess we should leave “Ancient Greek temples” to be as precise as possible... Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 15:10, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am currently talking with G.dallorto to solve the problem. Renaming is hanging up at the moment. Could you make this move, wich is not related:

{{move cat|Mythological people of Ancient Greece|People of Greek mythology}}

Thanks. Bibi Saint-Pol (sprechen) 15:14, 14 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Finally

[edit]

Hi,

After long discussions inside the "Ancient Greece project", we agreed, G.dallorto, User:Marsyas, User:Jastrow and I to leave the cats as they were before, because the "by location scheme" was not appropriate in cases such ancient civilizations. Mainly because a civilization has no proper location or could have many ones, so that defining "by location" categories of Ancient Greece (for instance) would be confusing and convoluted ("Art of Ancient Greece in Greece"?). So in a "by civilization scheme", using adjectives seems far more convenient and adequate ("Ancient Greek art in Greece"), at least for the "Ancient Greek", "Ancient Roman" and "Byzantine" civilizations.

So if you agree with this point of view, I would ask you to perform a few renamings to restore the former situation.

That "stupid mecha" happens to be a commons administrator. You are required to be civil to all users (including administrators) or you risk getting yourself blocked.
As for the images in question it is only natural to tag images as "unlicensed" if you do not license them.
-- Cat chi? 20:11, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just noting that I only marked the image as "no license"; you need to add the appropriate license to an image so we know what copyright it is under. Also, all images on Wikipedia are not uploadable here; fair use images are allowed there but on Commons we only accept free licenses.

That particular image also needs a source so we know where it came from. If it is from the English wikipedia you just need to provide a link to the image page there so we can check. If it's from a website or somewhere else, again, a link is necessary so we can double-check the license. Thanks in advance, and if you have more questions feel free to ask : ) -- Editor at Largetalk 16:46, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Editor at Large, you noted in your edit summary that "remove speedy, image is used and should go through normal flickr license problem processes". You will notice in the history that the image was reviewed by Rüdiger Wölk less than a half-hour after it was uploaded. In regards to "normal flickr license problem processes", I am unsure what they are but know that they are currently being discussed at Commons talk:Flickr images#Possibly unfree images. I thought that this circumstance justified speedy deleting the image, and thus tagged it accordingly; additionally, however, it appears after a cursory reading of the linked thread that the circumstances readily fall within the current proposed criteria. Would you reconsider deleting the image? --Iamunknown 16:50, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

Hey hon, got a quick question for you - hopefully you can take a minute out of your busy admin duties ^^ How would you categorise Image:USA.flagmap.jpg, Image:Union jack tv.png and Image:USA flag on television.png? I've been trying to clear out Category:Images with the same name on Wikimedia Commons, and I like to have images in a proper category before deleting them on en, but I'm stuck with those ones. Reply here or on en. Hope you're well, riana_dzasta 01:57, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, that's good, thanks! By the way, the flagmap is actually also available as Image:USA Flag Map.png. And I probably shouldn't have told you that, because that'll mean I'll have to go around fixing links on en :) riana_dzasta 02:28, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine, me likey ranty. It's only being used in userboxes, so I suppose it isn't crucial to delete it. What do you think? You probably won't get a reply for the next 10 hours or so because I seriously need to get some sleeping/homework done :) Cheers, riana_dzasta 15:16, 24 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

IMAGE USE!!!

[edit]
If every image is removed because YOU CANT COMFIRM THE DAMN COPYRIGHT STATA then why are you doing this to me? If they dont have the tag then THAT MEANS THEY DONT GIVE A DAMN WHAT HAPPENS TO IT!!! Maybe im wrong but an FCC law states "If the site does not state its copyright stata then ITS NOT COPYRIGHTED!!! So please tell my WHY IN THE HELL CANT I USE THAT DAMN IMAGE???!!!--Chris Hansen Fan 16:17, 25 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Eurocoins

Could you tell me, please, what happened to the images of Euro coins?
