Symbol graphics[edit]

For abstract geometric and/or typographical symbols, the PNG format is greatly preferred over JPEG in most cases, while true vector SVG is even better. TIFF can be more or less equivalent to PNG, but is more intended for lossless archival storage of raw scans of old artwork/photographs than simple geometry images. Also, File:Sacred Chao 2.jpg and File:Smiley eye in triangle.tif have technical image format problems ("Sacred Chao 2.jpg" contained extraneous data structures not necessary to grayscale JPEG, while "Smiley eye in triangle.tif" has uneven margins and is uncompressed). I couldn't fix the TIFF the way I wanted, due to compatibility problems (TIFF is not so much a single image format, but a miscellaneous collection of diverse image formats, so compatibility problems between different software isn't that uncommon). OK, thanks for the heads up; what do you want me to do about it? -- 16:56, 11 January 2016 Dumbledore-of-Awen
In most cases, if you have a geometric abstract or quasi-abstract symbol image, you should save it and upload it to Wikimedia Commons in PNG format. If you're working in a vector editor and feeling ambitious, you can try SVG (though that can have its own issues). AnonMoos (talk) 01:20, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
