Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge in New York City managed by the National Park Service as part of Gateway National Recreation Area. It is composed of the open water and intertidal salt marshes of Jamaica Bay. It lies entirely within the boundaries of New York City, divided between the boroughs of Brooklyn to the west and Queens to the east.

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 December. It will be on all wikis from 21 December (calendar). There is no new MediaWiki version next week. [1][2]
Starting December 18, it won't be possible to activate Structured Discussions on a user's own talk page using the Beta feature. The Beta feature option remains available for users who want to deactivate Structured Discussions. This is part of Structured Discussions' deprecation work. [3]
There will be full support for redirects in the Module namespace. The "Move Page" feature will leave an appropriate redirect behind, and such redirects will be appropriately recognized by the software (e.g. hidden from Special:UnconnectedPages). There will also be support for manual redirects. [4]
Future changes
The MediaWiki JavaScript documentation is moving to a new format. During the move, you can read the old docs using version 1.41. Feedback about the new site is welcome on the project talk page.
The Wishathon is a new initiative that encourages collaboration across the Wikimedia community to develop solutions for wishes collected through the Community Wishlist Survey. The first community Wishathon will take place from 15–17 March. If you are interested in a project proposal as a user, developer, designer, or product lead, you can register for the event and read more.

Papers: Increasing Coverage and Precision of Textual Information in Multilingual Knowledge Graphs by (Conia et al, 2023) --> This paper introduces a novel task of automatic Knowledge Graph Enhancement (KGE) to bridge the gap in the quantity and quality of textual information between English and non-English languages in Wikidata. Tool of the week
Cersei - is a tool designed for importing or scraping data from various third-party sources, using source-specific Python code. It can use a "headless browser" to scrape complicated websites that rely on eg JavaScript to navigate. It can therefore access data sources that can not be accessed via eg Mix'n'match. The data from sources can be updated regularly, either for everything, or just changed entries (if the source has a "recent changes" equivalent).
Wikidata:Zotero/Cita - is a Wikidata addon for Zotero that adds citations (i.e., what other items an item cites) metadata support to this open source reference management software, using cites work (P2860) information available from Wikidata, and enabling users to easily contribute missing data.

Recent changes
mediawiki2latex is a tool that converts wiki content into the formats of LaTeX, PDF, ODT, and EPUB. The code now runs many times faster due to recent improvements. There is also an optional Docker container you can install on your local machine.
The way that Random pages are selected has been updated. This will slowly reduce the problem of some pages having a lower chance of appearing. [5]

TheAafi, understandable, typically I ignore "Musée Annam" socks until they get disruptive. Usually they just do minor actions like adding odd categories like "Symbols of XXX District" where they will include random images of random symbols that aren't actually symbols of said district. More often than not their edits are just minor nuisances and I like the fact that "Musée Annam" likes uploading images of symbols and old newspapers that are otherwise hard to find, but oftentimes he also uploads poorly sourced images of fictional flags that he claims are "100% (one-hundred percent) legitimate". The only reason I reported him this time was because of the canonical hats category which just seemed odd to me, his categorisation style is highly idiosyncratic, which isn't always an issue, but oftentimes he will completely re-organise random categories for no discernable reason. I personally don't mind his abusive language and you don't have to censor him as it's just expressions of anger from a powerless man, my main issue is with him completely re-organising and disharmonising categories to the point where it will take a lot of work to clean up. Yann, ah, I typically don't request to delete such things because it's "easily accessible information to detect patterns" both in what kinds of accusations and methods of speaking. This can be a data management issue on Wikipedia as we must always ask ourself if we must introduce an inverse property for cases where we need them. Brian M Sperlongano released US boundary QA checker, a quality assurance tool for finding issues with boundary data in the United States by using Wikidata, OpenStreetMap, and US Census Bureau data.
The Surrounding Ocean (available at vrandezo.github.io/TheSurroundingOcean) - is a tool that allows you to browse lexicographical data. You can use the tool to explore words and their meanings, translations, and synonyms. The tool is currently under development, and the developer, Danny, would appreciate feedback to fix any issues with the tool. More info: Wikidata:The Surrounding Ocean.
WikiProject Highlights: Ontology Cleaning Task Force: A group of people have started a task force to discuss problems with the Wikidata ontology and how to clean them up. Anyone interested in participating is welcome. The task force maintains Wikidata:WikiProject Ontology/Cleaning Task Force as a record of its activities. IP masking: We are working on adjusting Wikibase to handle the upcoming introduction of IP masking, which will give editors who are not logged in a temporary account name instead of using their IP to attribute edits to (phab:T351968)
Lexicographical data: We are changing how empty Senses and Forms are represented in the dumps (phab:T305660)
mul language code: We are doing user testing for the current implementation to see if it is understandable for people.
Mismatch Finder: We are continuing the work on migrating it to the Codex design system.

We improved the handling of lower-case statement IDs (phab:T354262)

Recent changes
Pages that use the JSON contentmodel will now use tabs instead of spaces for auto-indentation. This will significantly reduce the page size. [8]
Gadgets and personal user scripts may now use JavaScript syntax introduced in ES6 (also known as "ES2015") and ES7 ("ES2016"). MediaWiki validates the source code to protect other site functionality from syntax errors, and to ensure scripts are valid in all supported browsers. Previously, Gadgets could use the requiresES6 option. This option is no longer needed and will be removed in the future. [9]

Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 16 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 17 January. It will be on all wikis from 18 January (calendar). [12][13]
Starting on January 17, it will not be possible to login to Wikimedia wikis from some specific old versions of the Chrome browser (versions 51–66, released between 2016 and 2018). Additionally, users of iOS 12, or Safari on Mac OS 10.14, may need to login to each wiki separately. [14]
The jquery.cookie module was deprecated and replaced with the mediawiki.cookie module last year. A script has now been run to replace any remaining uses, and this week the temporary alias will be removed. [15]

I've been searching since you asked me earlier if I'd seen a portrait of Minister Vương Tứ Đại (王賜大). I've made some new findings in these days and I'm sharing them with you here.
Here is a photo (KITLV 85885) taken during the visit of Andries Cornelis Dirk de Graeff to French Indochina. As you can see, most of the people in the photos are mandarins we know very well. From left: Tôn Thất Hân, Nguyễn Hữu Bài, Bửu Liêm, Phạm Liệu, Thái Văn Toản, (?), and Bửu Thạch. Here is the key: who is the second from the right?
As you might have realised, apart from the Regent Tôn Thất Hân, the Duke of Hoài-Ân Bửu Liêm, and the person we don't know, all the others were ministers at the time (1930). At this point, we find that three of the seven Ministers (if the President of Ton-Nhon is also regarded as a Minister) were not present in this photo: Võ Liêm (武濂), Minister of Rites, Vương Tứ Đại (王賜大), Minister of Public Works and Tôn Thất Đàn (尊室檀), Minister of Justice.
We've already seen portraits of Võ Liêm ([1]) and Tôn Thất Đàn ([2]).
KITLV 11787
Here is another group photograph (KITLV 11787) of the same event. As you can see, Tôn Thất Đàn was not in either of these two photos (Đàn is an old man with a long beard, thus a recognisable image). What about Võ Liêm? In KTLV 11787, He's third from the right in the second row, wearing glasses. And the unknown man wearing glasses in KITLV 85885 is standing behind Mr Nguyen Huu Bai in this photo, not wearing glasses (Note the shape of his face, don't confuse him with Mr Vo Liem).
By now, I could judge that the unknown man in both photos, is very likely to be the Minister of Public Works we have been looking for - Mr Vương Tứ Đại (王賜大).
Btw, Another photo you uploaded, taken in 1932, also shows such a man who looks similar to him standing with other ministers. 源義信 (talk) 11:46, 16 January 2024 (UTC)

Kinder der Landstrasse (literally: Children of the Country Road) was a project implemented by the Swiss foundation Pro Juventute from 1926 to 1973. The project aimed to assimilate the itinerant Yenish people in Switzerland by forcibly removing their children from their parents and placing them in orphanages or foster homes. Qurm Nature Reserve is a national nature reserve in Muscat Governorate, Oman. Located on the Gulf of Oman coast, the reserve protects a mangrove forest and the surrounding wetland in a small estuary within the urban area of Qurm. Established in 1975, the reserve has been designated as an Important Bird Area since 1994, and as a protected Ramsar site since 2013.

Recent changes
Starting Monday January 29, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they are looking for, even if this comment was moved elsewhere. This will affect all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. You can read more about this change on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [19]
There are some improvements to the CAPTCHA to make it harder for spam bots and scripts to bypass it. If you have feedback on this change, please comment on the task. Staff are monitoring metrics related to the CAPTCHA, as well as secondary metrics such as account creations and edit counts.

There will be full support for redirects in the Module namespace. The "Move Page" feature will leave an appropriate redirect behind, and such redirects will be appropriately recognized by the software (e.g. hidden from Special:UnconnectedPages). There will also be support for manual redirects. [4]

On February 1, a link will be added to the "Tools" menu to download a QR code that links to the page you are viewing. There will also be a new Special:QrCode page to create QR codes for any Wikimedia URL. This addresses the #19 most-voted wish from the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey. [22]
