Problems

  • Musical scores were unable to render lyrics in some languages because of missing fonts. This has been fixed now. If your language would prefer a different font, please file a request in Phabricator. [1]

Changes later this week

  • Advanced item The parameters for how you obtain tokens in the MediaWiki API were changed in 2014. The old way will no longer work from 1 September. Scripts, bots and tools that use the parameters from before the 2014 change need to be updated. You can read more about this.
  • Recurrent item The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 31 August. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 1 September. It will be on all wikis from 2 September (calendar).

  • You will be able to read but not edit Commons for a few minutes on 6 September. This will happen around 05:00 UTC. This is for database maintenance.

Marxist historical negationism in Vietnam

If you want a good way to identify historical negationism in Vietnam I would direct you to "Historiography in the Soviet Union#Theoretical approaches" "Chinese historiography#Marxism", specifically:

  • Primitive-communism
  • Slave society
  • Feudal society
  • Capitalist society
  • Socialist society
  • The world communist society

The official historical view within the People's Republic of China associates each of these stages with a particular era in Chinese history.

Now project this onto Vietnamese history you get:

The same applies to North Korean historiography, notice how common the term "Phong kiến" (封建) appears in Communist Chinese, Communist Vietnamese, and Communist Korean historiographies, Joseon is called "Triều Tiên Phong kiến Vương triều" (朝鮮封建王朝) in North Korea. Meanwhile go over any South Korean history text book and look for the term "Phong kiến", it's simply much rarer. The problem with Vietnamese historiography is that the Vietnamese communities in France and the United States aren't producing anything that goes against the Socialist narrative, Chinese historiography has Taiwan (for what that is worth with the strong anti-Chinese sentiment in the Taiwanese nationalist movement that often love to adopt Communist Party frameworks to mis-represent what it means to be "Chinese") and Korean historiography has the much more influential and scientifically based South Korean historiography. Most foreign historians won't criticise Socialist Vietnamese historiography because that would mean losing access to Vietnam and its archives, archaeological sites, and other resources and if you're a historian specialised in Vietnam you would have to follow the party line, Overseas Vietnamese might criticise the historiography but the Vietnamese Communist Party can just learn from the Chinese Communist Party in how to control their respective country's diaspora and Little Saigon's can turn into Little Hanoi's in a generation, notice how little critical thought against Chinese historiography comes from the Overseas Chinese. This is also why I don't remove "feudal" and "feudalism" from articles about Chinese and Vietnamese history on Wikipedia, because of the fact that our contemporary mainstream historiography supports its inclusion even if it's actually is just historical revisionism. --Donald Trung (talk) 21:13, 15 August 2021 (UTC)

  • The Enforcement Draft Guidelines - The Enforcement Draft Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct has just been published on meta in different languages. These guidelines include some definitions of newly introduced terms and recommendations for local enforcement structures. (continue reading)
  • Enforcement Draft Guidelines Review - Before the enforcement guidelines are finalized, they must be reviewed and discussed by the community. The facilitation team has set up various discussion means throughout this review period. (continue reading)
  • Conversation Hours & Roundtables - To listen to community opinions and exchange ideas regarding enforcement draft guidelines proposed by the drafting committee, the UCoC facilitation team will be hosting weekly conversation hours. (continue reading)
  • Wikimania Wrap-up - The facilitation team hosted a Roundtable at Wikimania 2021, featuring some WMF trustees and staff. The session offered some insights on how the Enforcement Draft Guidelines came about, and what next steps are being imagined. (continue reading)
