Please be bold and help translate this article! Abstract photography, sometimes called non-objective, experimental or conceptual photography, is a means of depicting a visual image that does not have an immediate association with the object world and that has been created through the use of photographic equipment, processes or materials. An abstract photograph may isolate a fragment of a natural scene in order to remove its inherent context from the viewer, it may be purposely staged to create a seemingly unreal appearance from real objects, or it may involve the use of color, light, shadow, texture, shape and/or form to convey a feeling, sensation or impression. The image may be produced using traditional photographic equipment like a camera, darkroom or computer, or it may be created without using a camera by directly manipulating film, paper or other photographic media, including digital presentations. We need your feedback!
Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Thank you!
I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.
We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.
Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.
Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.
Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)
An Earlier Đổi Mới
- An Earlier Đổi Mới. - April 5, 2010 / leminhkhai. (Lê Minh Khải's SEAsian History Blog).

- “Đổi mới,” or “renovation,” is a term which is now associated with the economic reforms which the Vietnamese government began in 1986 in an effort to move away from a command economy and towards a market economy. People, however, are probably less familiar with this earlier instance of “đổi mới” which took place in the 1920s and 1930s. This image is from the 1930s, and it contrasts the “woman from before” with the “woman of now, after đổi mới.”. (Lê Minh Khải's SEAsian History Blog).

- The text at the top can be translated loosely as something like “Women engage in the talk of the times about progress.” I’m assuming that the point of this comic is to criticize women who just focus on the superficial aspects of modern society.. (Lê Minh Khải's SEAsian History Blog).

Women Reading in Colonial Vietnam

- "Source" field.
- Women Reading in Colonial Vietnam. - April 26, 2010 / leminhkhai. - This is one of my favourite images. It is from the cover of a journal which was published in Saigon in the late 1920s and early 1930s called Women’s News. It says at the top that it is a weekly which is published every Thursday.. (Lê Minh Khải's SEAsian History Blog).

- It then employs terms which today sound archaic as they come from classical Chinese, a language which Vietnamese had only recently ceased using in favor of writing in the vernacular using a Romanized script, to say that “The powdered and rouged (ones) embellish the mountains and rivers.” “Powdered and rouged” was a term which meant “women” and “mountains and rivers” indicated the “nation.” This journal was created in part to promote the “modernization” of women, and yet this statement on its cover strikes me as exceedingly conservative. I’d appreciate any ideas as to how this comment should be understood.. (Lê Minh Khải's SEAsian History Blog).

- It’s a page from a newspaper from the 1920s called the Soul of Việt Nam (Vietnamese: Việt Nam Hồn). It appears to have been registered in France, and it looks to me like that is where it was published, as I don’t think one could publish articles in French Indochina at the time which directly called for independence, like the articles in this paper did.. Announcements in the Indigenous Language in Colonial Vietnam
- Announcements in the Indigenous Language in Colonial Vietnam. - April 3, 2012 / leminhkhai. - I recently came across a journal that was published in colonial Vietnam called the Official Bulletin in the Indigenous Language. It was an official publication for Tonkin (Bắc Kỳ) which announced to the public laws and decisions which had been made by the colonial authority.. (Lê Minh Khải's SEAsian History Blog).

- It is a very interesting journal, because while it contains announcements about laws and decisions which were made by the French, it also contains statements by Emperor Bảo Đại. So for anyone who wishes to examine the overlapping authority of the French and the Nguyễn Dynasty in its last days, this journal looks like it would be a great source.. - Another point which caught my attention is that this journal contains announcements for journals and newspapers which the colonial authorities approved for publication. - Are historians of colonial Vietnam familiar with the Saint Dominic Bimonthly? How about the Women’s Weekly? The Moscow Journal? Theater and Cinema? - I didn’t think so. That’s why this journal is fascinating, as it opens a window onto parts of a past world which historical writings to date have not revealed or examined.. (Lê Minh Khải's SEAsian History Blog).

- dustofthewest - April 5, 2012 at 9:12 pm. - Interesting tidbits in the couple of pages you posted – Thụy An (of the Women’s Weekly) was later tried and imprisoned during the Nhân Văn Giai Phẩm proceedings (though she had no connection to most of the so-called conspirators). Đàm Quang Thiện (of Kịch Ảnh) is credited with being the first Vietnamese to produce and direct a film – Cánh đồng ma (1937). It’s striking the number of creative and ambitious young Vietnamese during the late colonial period. Their contributions were and continue to be largely swept over by the revolutionary tide.. The "indigenous language edition" (Vietnamese-language edition) of the official bulletin of the government of the French protectorate of Tonkin issued in the year 1939 which shows the overlapping authority of both the French colonial administration and the Nguyễn Dynasty.
The "Official Bulletin in the Indigenous Language" contains a collection of public laws and decisions made by the governments of French Indo-China and the Nguyễn Dynasty as well as a number of indigenous language magazines and newspapers such as Saint Dominic Bimonthly, Women’s Weekly, The Moscow Journal, and Theatre and Cinema.
