I mostly import Oriental numismatic files, but don't limit myself to one topic.

This page serves as a page for importing free files from other websites to the Wikimedia Commons and to keep the main talk page limited to discussions, notifications, and newsletters. Please leave a message at "User talk:Donald Trung". I created this page to draft imports as it's often difficult on a mobile device to go back-and-forth from the page of import and the MediaWiki Upload Wizard. Also, I prefer to keep an archived record with the OneClickArchiver (1ClickArchiver) over "hiding the record" in the edit history.

Documenting the Nguyễn Dynasty.[edit]

This is a draft message (e-mail) to Associate Professor Lê Minh Khải (黎明凱) about a number of documents on the Wikimedia Commons and information relating to them.

"Dear Kẻ đốt đền,

Could the term Kinh people be a Gallicism?

I had this sudden realisation...

From Wikipedia: "The term "metropolitan France" dates from the country's colonial period (from the 16th to the 20th centuries), when France was referred to as la Métropole (literally "the Metropolis"), as distinguished from its colonies and protectorates, known as les colonies or l'Empire. Similar terms existed to describe other European colonial powers (e.g. "metropolitan Britain", "España metropolitana"). This application of the words "metropolis" and "metropolitan" came from Ancient Greek "metropolis" (from μήτηρ mētēr "mother" and πόλις pólis "city, town"), which was the name for a city-state that created colonies across the Mediterranean (e.g. Marseille was a colony of the city-state of Phocaea; therefore Phocaea was the "metropolis" of Marseille). By extension "metropolis" and "metropolitan" came to mean "motherland", a nation or country as opposed to its colonies overseas." (Attribution).

This idea of "Metropolitan people" kind of translates well to the Confucian idea that civilisation is where the Emperor is (Kinh).

French people from the French domination period likely referred to people from Europe as "Metropolitans" and "Urban" people contrasted with the "less civilised", likewise, this translates very well with the idea of "the capital city" and it might be why Chinese and Korean people don't call themselves "Kinh nhân" despite having the same ideas of the capital being the centre of the universe.

Jurisprudence in the Nguyễn Dynasty.

Yours faithfully,

Listing cash coins on Wikipedia.[edit]

This is a draft message (e-mail) to Scott Semans from Scott Semans World Coins (CoinCoin.com) about a number of images of coins and related numismatic topics on the Wikimedia Commons and information relating to them.

"Dear Scott Semans,

ChinaZeug.de likely won't be imported to the Wikimedia Commons.

After some weeks of contact with the owners of the ChinaZeug.de website I have come to the conclusion that I can't import their images to the Wikimedia Commons. Not only do they not want to release it under a copyright license compatible with the licensing policy and scope policy of the Wikimedia Commons, their images are creative enough to be eligible for copyright, so I (unfortunately) can't import their images to the Wikimedia Commons. I don't necessarily see this as something enormously bad as the cash coins found on the Chinesecoins.lyq.dk website are in fact from a large period of Chinese history and include many varieties. But it is still a shame that I can't save the contents of this website to the Wikimedia Commons as one (1) day it will disappear and then people won't be able to access it.

It is about building websites...

There were many different websites about Chinese numismatics, as of 2023 most of them have disappeared, there are many reasons for this. But let's look at "the macro-internet" to separate it from "the micro-internet" (individual websites, web services, internet-powered application programmes, Etc.), the presence of Chinese numismatics on-line follows larger trends. During the 1990's and 2000's most of the internet was made out of forums, blogs, and vlogs, today forums and blogs have been largely "centralised" by a small number of services and Facebook Groups and Reddit "subs" function as forums, it's rare for new forums to actually pop up on the internet and many major forums that exist today are either "too edgy for Reddit and Meta's Facebook" or by very exclusive clubs that wish to exclude others. Facebook groups largely function like this where people previously had to create their own forums, they now join a group on Meta's Facebook. Historically, people tended to create forums because (1) they had a drive to create "an online community" around their interests, and / or (2) they had a very specific question that they wanted answered. Today, literally all these things can work on major platforms, why make a completely new website from scratch, where you have to register a domain, write the entire code, organise the forum, find a host, and a lot more, and do the marketing to announce your website elsewhere? There simply aren't many reasons to do this when you can literally just go on Reddit or Meta's Facebook and do this literally within 1 (one) or 2 (two) minutes.

Of course, there are still cases where you can build websites for specific Chinese numismatic subjects. Now, let's look at this website as an example:

It's a website specifically created to share a personal collection. I kind of want Wikimedia websites to become "the centralised hub for Chinese numismatics on-line (alongside Zeno.ru)", but there are 2 (two) types of websites that fall out of this scope because they can essentially "never be succeeded" and these are (1) personal collection websites, and (2) Chinese numismatic news websites. While technically Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website falls under these, the stories and information listed on a newer website will likely simply just link to Wikipedia or other specialised websites, in fact this is exactly what we see on Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website itself where such information being numerous in older articles, but often linking to Wikipedia in the "news blog" / "news section", this is especially true for subjects that have been recorded in much details. Why write a large part about the history of the Tang Dynasty when you can simply link to the Wikipedia page?

Chinesecoins.lyq.dk is a good example of a website that went into a rather surface level of details because tonnes of information is found elsewhere, this was done to the point that simply pointing to Hartill numbers was enough, I'd describe ChinaZeug.de as being build in a similar manner, as is Mywoodprints.free.fr. These are all "personal collection websites" and their existence can very simply be supplemental to Wikipedia and can "fill in the gaps" where Wikipedia does have the information, but lacks the images, this is essentially the road Wikipedia is going to now, especially if / when I'm done importing TransAsiart and supplementing it with Cast Chinese Coins by David Hartill. I would also argue that the creation of Zeno.ru is the main reason why we saw a strong decline in the creation of new "personal collection websites" in the field of Chinese numismatics as people now had a centralised forum where they could post their images. Meanwhile, Zeno.ru has been a somewhat terrible Chinese numismatic news website. I'd argue that it is quite difficult to find information about coin hoards and other new discoveries on Zeno.ru, in fact, I'd argue that Wikipedia does this a lot better after I created the infrastructure for it (though this was made in order to find a way to get a large amount of information from Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website onto Wikipedia, in fact even today, there are more entries for Gary Ashkenazy's (Hebrew: גארי אשכנזי) Primaltrek / Primal Trek website than for Kaogu, the official archeological journal of the People's Republic of China (39 Vs. 29.).). Though I'd argue that Zeno.ru had a lot of potential, but they never really did anything with it, and I single-handedly expanded Wikipedia beyond it. Now, I'd argue that the next major works are finishing David Hartill's Cast Chinese Coins (as he already donated half of his book to Wikipedia by himself), import TransAsiart, and Chinesecoins.lyq.dk. Wikimedia websites are now becoming "the central place of Chinese numismatics" though still distantly behind Zeno.ru.

Yours faithfully,
TQD

Work on an anti-page blanking proposal[edit]

User "Koavf" was indefinitely blocked from 09:28, 2 December 2020 until 15:46, 10 September 2022, yet throughout that entire time their userpage remained untouched. When they were unblocked they weren't given a single sanction, this is extremely rare. Both the unblock without a sanction and a user who was indefinitely blocked that didn't have their user page blanked, this makes me wonder if this might be related.

What if it might be standard practice to blank user pages to make it seem like the user was never "a real Wikimedian" to begin with and that the block notices + blanking is done to reduce their entire presence to that of a persona non grata?

On 21 (the twenty-first) of June 2023 user "WMFOffice" blanked the user page of user "Krassotkin", this is despite already being tagged in 12 (the twelfth of) October 2021 and having his user page restored by an established user. I have literally never seen any actual policy or guideline page state that user pages of indefinitely blocked / indefinitely banned people have to be blanked, so why is the WMF Office engaging in this behaviour? It only seems to be "standard practice" with no actual origins in any policy. Is the claim here actually that a former Bureaucrat on one (1) project and Sysop on two (2) projects is "a non-contributor"? If the argument is that "they don't need user pages because they can't contribute anymore" then this should also apply to deceased users, but these are always tagged and not blanked. In fact, user pages of deceased Wikimedians are often indefinitely protected and their accounts are often locked 🔐, so why aren't their user pages blanked and then tagged with "Locked account"?

What I find interesting is the edit summary "I really can't see any policy-based reason to blank this,m and at the moment the content of this page is relevant to an arbcom case. This is literally an admission by an ArbCom member that the blanking of user pages isn't rooted in any policy. Note that I have also been unable to find any such policy at the Wikimedia Commons and at certain Wikipedia's like the Dutch-language Wikipedia the user pages of blocked users aren't typically blacked, until now I've only ever seen the user "WMFOffice" do it there.

I can use two (2) examples here, one is a user with 50 (fifty) edits, they did some content edits and made a user page, the other has over a 100.000 (hundred thousand) edits, is a former Sysop, has uploaded hundreds or even thousands of quality images, and their name appears on thousands of pages everywhere from a WikiCareer spanning over a decade. But the latter got into an argument with a vandal, they were then suffering from mental health issues due to real life stress (bodily deterioration, the loss of a loved one, Etc.) and absolutely lose it over how callously the vandal insulted her now-deceased mother, or whatever. The user with years of experience and tens of thousands of pages linking to their user page now has a blanked user page because they're indefinitely blocked. To a casual visitor who isn't familiar with WikiCulture it appears as if the user with 50 (fifty) edits is an established user while the user with hundreds of thousands of edits is "a non-user".

Let's not forget that blanking a user page in any other context is considered vandalism.

AI poster deletion request draft[edit]

I saw this poster of a chocolate bunny that appears to have been generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) "in the wild" and it was the very first (1st) time that I've seen such an image while not actively surfing the internet. While to me it appears to "obviously be an AI image", I tend to be cautious with this assumption as it could be a human-made artwork emulating the now popular AI-generated art style.

Per the precautionary principle I therefore lean on  Delete, but because we can expect more AI-generated artworks to appear in public I expect more photographers to document and upload these in the future, so to set precedent I uploaded this image to nominate it for deletion and get a wider discussion about it.

Both my arguments for keeping and deleting this image comes making assumptions in the absence of contradicting evidence. Namely, to keep this image we'd have to assume that it is an AI-generated image made by a robot 🤖 outside of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (assuming that it was made in the Kingdom of the Netherlands) and that no human creative labour was involved after the image was produced by the creative labour of a robot. This would make it a fully non-human creative work ineligible for copyright ©️ restrictions. The counter-argument would be that just because it is in the style of an AI-generated work doesn't mean that no human hands changed it after its initial generation and that these changes were non-significant enough to create legal copyright ©️.

In brief, keep because it's made by a robot, or delete because we can't know if it was made by a robot or not and even if it was a human could've "touched it" making it a new derivative work restricted by copyright ©️.
