Commons and Wikipedia[edit]

Hi Dona Ana CC. Just to follow up a bit on what Jmabel posted in their response to your query at COM:VPC#Updating an official logo, Wikimedia Commons (Commons) and English Wikipedia (Wikipedia) are sister projects run by the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), but they serve different roles and have their own specific policies and guidelines. Commons is primarily intended to host media files and other content that falls under COM:SCOPE; in other words, it's like a big global photo album which host images for use in other WMF project or by third-parties outside of Wikipedia. Wikipedia, on the other hand, is an encyclopedia intended to host mainly textual content (i.e. encyclopedic articles) and perhaps some images. There is some overlapping when it comes to polices and guidelines between Commons and Wikipedia (particularly related to image licensing), but there are also some very important differences.

As Jmabel posted in their response, Commons is primarily concerned about the licensing of the images it hosts, whereas Wikipedia is concerned not only with the licensing but also the encyclopedic use of the images used in its articles. Wikipedia also has policies regarding conflict of interest editing, paid/compensated editing, ownership of content and what's allowed that cover things that don't really apply to Commons. For reference, pretty much everything you posted on your Commons user page isn't going to be allowed per relevant Wikipedia policy and guidelines.

Basically, the Wikipedia article en:Doña Ana Community College is not the property of the college and neither you nor anyone else associated with the college has any sort of final editorial control over its content. Of course, Wikipedia wants the article to be as accurate as possible, but all article content needs to be in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and the article isn't to be used as a means of promotion for the college or as part of the college's online presence. If you feel there are things in the article that need to be corrected, the first thing you should do is follow the guidance given in en:WP:COIPAYDISCLOSE because a failure to do so would be a violation of the WMF's wmf:Terms of Use and will likely lead to your account being blocked. Once you've formally declared your connection, you should follow the guidance given in en:WP:COIADVICE and en:WP:PSCOI#Steps for engagement and make edit requests at en:Talk:Doña Ana Community College. Your edit requests will be reviewed by others and implemented if they're in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines. This is the best way to try and keep the article updated. If you try to do it directly yourself, there's not only a risk that your edits will be quickly reverted but also that your account ends up blocked if you start making changes that aren't in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines. (If you look at the article's talk page, you'll see that someone else representing the college tried to edit the article a few years ago, and things didn't go too well for them.) Now, if you've been tasked to "keep Wikipedia up-to-date" by a superior, you might want to take a look at en:WP:BOSS and explain to that superior there are limitations as to how much and what you can do.

Finally, if you'd like to ask questions about any of what I posted above related to Wikipedia, you can do so at en:Wikipedia:Help desk and en:Wikipedia:Teahouse. It's best to ask questions specific to Wikipedia on one [of] Wikipedia's help pages [rather] than Commons because any issues related to Wikipedia will need to be resolved on Wikipedia. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:07, 20 April 2024 (UTC) bracketed content added for clarity. Your username[edit]

Hi again Dona Ana CC. I just want to clarify another difference between Wikipedia and Commons regarding usernames. Your current username is fine for Commons, but it's not allowed on Wikipedia because of names of organizations, companies, etc. aren't allowed per Wikipedia's username policy as explained here and names that imply accounts are being shared by multiple users are not allowed as explained here, So, if you want to use this account to also edit on Wikipedia, you will need to follow the guidance given here and request that you're username be changed. -- Marchjuly (talk) 12:10, 20 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
