Hello, DigbyDalton!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Hello Mr. DigbyDalton,

This image looks nearly fine ... but may be a little lower part is missing ?!

Any possibility to get the whole map accessible under WM ?

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. File:LowsWorldMap.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Your Images[edit]

Please take some time to change own work on your images to actual sources for the maps/photos. Thank you. Ellin Beltz (talk) 22:04, 18 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for deleting all those precious maps that I painstakingly scanned for Wikipedia from the original source of Low's Encyclopedia of 1804, for the unreasonable reason that you thought "own work" was not an appropriate copyright claim on a 210 year old document, even though it has the name and meta data of my scanner right on it. I'm not wasting my time rescanning them, the original source is too fragile. Unless you are arguing that I did not create that Encyclopedia 210 years ago. Oh wait, you actually are. Now the world will be unable to see those incredible and historically important maps. Unbelievable.

Put them back please. DigbyDalton (talk) 02:55, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The process now is to go to COM:UNDEL, provide them the list of file names in question and ask for a review. That way, whichever of us is not correct will be decided by a neutral third party. The images can be restored simply if they are found to have proper source. They will not need to be rescanned. At the time they were listed "own" was not correct and there were no dates on Low's Encyclopedia. One example
"
Description
English: An 1810 map of Pennsylvania. From Low's Encyclopaedia
Date
Source Own work
Author Low's Encyclopaedia

"

Own work wasn't explained as you scanned them from an original. I think if you had explained the source as fully as you have just now, that the images may not have been considered a problem. When/if the images are restored after your UNDEL request, please take a moment to fill in the templates to truly explain their sources. The user should not be required to do research to understand the provenance of Commons images. Thank you for your understanding that this is a process and not a judgement. Ellin Beltz (talk) 10:12, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No way am I going to waste my time doing that. If I took a photo of the Parthenon and shared it to Wiki Commons by saying it's my own work, which it is, are you going to delete it because I didn't build the Parthenon? You are the one who thinks "An 1810 map of Pennsylvania" is not clear enough about being public domain, and that "own work' means something other than the obvious meaning that I scanned it, and not somebody else. You need to get the list of files you deleted and restore them, I already did enough to scan and share them in the first place. I am not going to get involved anymore in this idiotic argument. I'm done. You need to fix the damage you did, I'm not. And I'm not going to scan any 200 year old maps anymore, either. Done.DigbyDalton (talk) 03:30, 22 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry you do not understand the process and have become angry. If you go to COM:UNDEL and make a simple statement there of the problem an editor who has not failed you can take a second look! This is a process only. It is entirely probable, like you say, that I am completely wrong. But having failed you once, I have to refer you to a different editor to fix it. That way we both get a second opinion and you may very well get the satisfaction of having another admin tell me I screwed up. In which case, I'll apologize profusely and your images will be restored. The note over on UNDEL could take you as little as 30 seconds to a minute... being upset with me won't fix it! Cheers!! File:SCAN0003a.jpg[edit]

I have a question. Do you think putting "own work" to the source of this image (that obviously copied from mine) is fair??? --Ali Zifan (talk) 20:04, 21 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • I made some touch ups on the image and called it SCAN0003b.jpg and attributed it to you. Can be seen at:

Great Manhattan pano, much appreciated! I'll use it for the German Wiki too. :)
