First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: :Image:Foo.jpg, which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi Deathgleaner, you wanted the mount rainier panorama files to be stitched together, and, well, i did it. just to let you know, Richardprins (talk) 15:44, 26 July 2008 (UTC) oh and could you please post the deletion requests for the files? Thanks[reply]

Hello,

I'm afraid that's the best that could be done with the source files. Óðinn (talk) 16:27, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - I am a project Checkuser which allows me to determine the IP of users edits. This right is allowed to a limited number of users to prevent disruption on the project.

Looking at this candidate it seems likely that either you have created additional accounts with which to vote or have asked others to do so. Obviously this is unacceptable to the project. As such I have struck the votes concerned and blocked the users from editing further. I must ask you not to take or encourage such action in the future or your account may well be blocked too. --Herby talk thyme 08:17, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see with some interest that you have appealed the block on a user you agree you created (here).
I'm afraid I find it hard to understand why you would not consider it unreasonable to think that you could create extra accounts to influence voting? Common sense would surely suggest that people would object to this. I'll certainly not be unblocking that account as user two accounts in such a way is against our policies.
There are three other accounts I blocked are also associated with you (they were editing in the same way from the same IPs as you). I notice also that an IP attempted to remove my strikeout of one of the votes which led to me blocking the IP. Any further such actions will merely lead to blocks I'm afraid. --Herby talk thyme 13:15, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The only way I'd be comfortable with an unblock is if it was monitored to make sure you are complying with policy in general. Further, are you willing to undertake to avoid voting at FP and other places where there is voting, for some considerable time in the future (say, 6 months) so as to build up a considerable contribution record and rebuild your reputation? I mean even with your primary account. ++Lar: t/c 06:02, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will look through my user contribs since i don't memorize it. ✓ Done Deathgleaner (talk) 03:38, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
From this account:
 • 1st contribution was to upload an image: File:Vesuvius wright.jpg.
 • I uploaded pictures for a panorama of Mount Rainier, which I now believe is in use in two Wikipedias
 • Voted in the Election suffrage poll (breifly)
 • Commented on some Beethoven pieces
This is about as far as I got before bad things happened and I got blocked. So, I created a new account so I could contribute positively. This account was User:CommonMaster. Under this account, the contributions are as follows:
 • Added an excerpt of a Beethoven sonata Image:Beethoven-Sonata20-mv1-excerpt.png
 • Uploaded parts of another Mount Rainier panorama, and got it stitched Image:Mount Rainier Trail panorama.jpg
 • Uploaded a new version of File:Beethoven-Pathetique.ogg (tempo stabilization)
 • Found a broken-up panorama, and reported it to be stitched
 • Stumbled upon a category of images needing border removal, and removed a few image borders
 • Near December 21st, it started snowing REALLY hard in Seattle, so I took many pictures of the snow, and uploaded it. Over the course of two weeks, I uploaded nine images, one panorama, and one wide-field image. Hopefully, this will be used in an article about the weather this year, Washington, Seattle, or something along those lines. Please see File:Snowinseattle2008-1.jpg and others...
 • Uploaded a resized image of the largest image on Commons as of 04:03, 7 January 2009 (UTC)
In general, I upload photos here and fix whatever I can and whatever I find. Even though I'm usually only on once per night, and some of my contributions are minor, they add up, and can help Commons in the long run. If I am unblocked, I will continue my good contributions whenever I can, and work my best to drop any bad contributions.
I also promise that I will stay away from FP voting for quite some time to avoid causing further disruption, which encompasses that six-month period someone mentioned.

ADDENDUM: I also have an account on the Simple English Wikipedia & 'tionary. At the Wiktionary there, it obviously needs improvement, so I've added more definitions. I also did some work on astronomy-related pages on Simple English 'Pedia. Although these may not be big contribs, they still add up.
I also use my main account on the English Wikipedia, I used to welcome users a lot (about 50+) before time constraints in real life got the best of me. Along with this user welcoming, I designed a new welcome template Template:Welcome v2.0, which has been reverted quite a bit. After that huge welcoming spree, I added info to games I used to play. A few welcomings here and there between article editings. I attempted to participate in the 2008 Main Page Redesign contest, which again, was not completed because of time constraints. Through this whole time I also edited articles, mostly minor edits. I can't do much every night, though, so please don't overlook the minor edits, because again, they add up. 04:18, 7 January 2009 (UTC)

I've asked for community input. Once some discussion has taken place, we will determine what to do. Please be patient. If you wish to add to the discussion, for example, by posting an apology or something, feel free to email it to me (which I will get faster than posting it here) and I will place it there for you.  — Mike.lifeguard | @en.wb 15:08, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unblocked

[edit]

You have been unblocked on the condition that you abide by the prohibition outlined here. You are restricted to one account and are prohibited from taking place in community discussion/vote areas like FP, POTY, RFXs etc. We can, of course, take a look at lifting these restrictions some time in the future after some good behaviour. Other than that, you're free to go. Have fun editing. :) Giggy (talk) 04:17, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

archived. 22:56, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I think it would be more appropriate, if an image with the aircraft highlighted is desired, to upload this under a new filename. I've therefore reverted your upload of a new version but would invite you to upload this edited version again if you wish under a different name. Adambro (talk) 23:29, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Deathgleaner!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Panorama

[edit]

Hi there!

I re-edited two of you panoramas: this one and this one

hope you like them :-) Both were a lot of work. I strongly suggest that you use a tripod and that you wait for the car to leave. It is completely out of proportion doing an edit like that for the two minutes you would have had to wait for the car to leave ;-)

Amada44 (talk) 09:36, 27 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there!
No, I used only your images :-) Amada44 (talk) 07:22, 28 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
