How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Requesting sup.

Hello De728631, I am requesting the suppression of all the uploads expect the current version of File:Wildfire Barnstar.png, Thank you. Jerm (talk) 00:41, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

✓ Done @Jerm: I deleted the three previous revisions. De728631 (talk) 21:24, 5 January 2022 (UTC)

Is this really what you intended? Or do they all need to be reverted? Andy Dingley (talk) 02:59, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

@Andy Dingley: Hi there and thank your for pointing this out – it was an error. I wanted to push them into Category:G-BWMF (aircraft) since those are all modern images of the warbird rather than original photos from the times when WA591 was active. It seems that I misclicked on Cat-a-lot. De728631 (talk) 03:05, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

Restore File:Jorge Luis Diaz Granados Lugo.jpg

Hello @De728631, the image rights have been updated in the registry database, you can already use the image and restore, it has no restrictions of any kind, it can be remixed, transformed and built on top of the material for any purpose, including commercially. Updated record link

Please keep this at Jim L. Woodward's talk page. I am watching that page so there is no need to duplicate the topic here. De728631 (talk) 19:08, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
Granted, I just wanted to keep people informed 😑 MichellDasilva (talk) 06:50, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
I have contacted the author again, I suggested as commented by him to do it well this time so that they accepted his photos, he tells me that this time he did it correctly the ticket is 2022021010005814 MichellDasilva (talk) 10:10, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Alright, thank you for letting me know. Once the ticket has been processed and accepted, the file will be undeleted. De728631 (talk) 10:11, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

File transfer help

Greetings,

I need your urgent assistance to transfer image (sabriya.png) to Wikipedia with fair use regulations. I requested undeletion for that and now I have a chance for transfer I hope you can help me Thank you -Film contributor Film contributor (talk) 02:10, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

@Film contributor: Hello. I uploaded a low-resolution version of the file at the English Wikipedia: en:File:Sabriya TV series set card.png. The fair use rules there do not allow high-resolution uploads of non-free files, so I used a small thumbnail. However, you would have to upload the file yourself at the Turkish and Uzbek Wikipedias since I cannot read the languages. De728631 (talk) 07:37, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

I appreciate your help. Thank you so much. But the low resolution fair use is not appearing when I insert it to other languages such as Turkish and Russian Film contributor (talk) 09:33, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Yes, that is because you need to upload the low-resolution file at each Wikipedia separately with a new fair use rationale. Unlike Commons, images stored at Wikipedia cannot be accessed by other Wikimedia projects. De728631 (talk) 09:35, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

PD-New Zealand

Hi there, I see you've protected Template:PD-New Zealand so that only admins can edit it. Looking at the edit history, it's been edited quite a bit by a large number of editors, so making it that restrictive is a bit of an inconvenience. What I don't understand is that Template:PD-New Zealand/en is not protected, yet makes up the majority of the main template's content. Isn't there something a bit less restrictive on Commons so that long-term trusted users don't lose edit access? Schwede66 02:39, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

De728631 (talk) 14:26, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Hi De728631, the file has a source link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqrewCeeHYU) and cc-by-licensed. Puramyun31 (talk) 02:17, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

@Puramyun31: Thank you for pointing this out. There was a typo in the original source link so my check didn't work with that url. However, I restored the file and confirmed the free licence. De728631 (talk) 16:36, 27 February 2022 (UTC)

Bust

By that logic none of the vice president bust should have a picture on here as we have no evidence on who took them if I am doing something wrong let me know but the bust of charels curtis was made in 1934 and that year also doesn't fall into copyright guide lines perhaps you can explained what the difference is better these 2 and why curtis is allowed but truman is not Journey896 (talk) 00:32, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

@Journey896: As with most copyright cases from a series, these photos should be checked one by one. As to File:Charles Curtis bust.jpg, the bust is in fact in the public domain because if there ever was any copyright under US law, it was not renewed when the initial term of 28 years ran out. I checked this in the Catalog of Copyright Entries where there is no entry for this work for the years 1929, 1930, 1934 or 1935 and subsequent renewal dates. For the Truman bust, I guess we can assume {{PD-USGov-Congress}} with regards to the photo, but the copyright of the sculpture there remains unclear imo. De728631 (talk) 01:52, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

The Truman bust was made in 1949 so of course you won't see a note for it on the 1934 page Journey896 (talk) 12:40, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

@De728631 Journey896 (talk) 12:40, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

If the copyright for curtis is unknown as your speculating of there was it wasn't renewed so how is speculation for curtis different than for Truman Journey896 (talk) 12:44, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

The copyright for the Curtis bust is not unknown but it expired because all works prior to 1927 are no longer protected under US copyright law. This is a general rule the year of expiration progresses continuously, so next year all works from 1928 and earlier will become free in the US, The Truman bust, however, does not fall under this rule, but as Carl Lindberg wrote, it does not have a copyright notice attached, so that makes it free of copyright too. For details about US copyright rules, please see COM:Hirtle chart. De728631 (talk) 19:15, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

The curtis bust was made in 1934 though so how is it before 1927 I'm not upset or trying to argue just confused I have read that so many times Journey896 (talk) 00:13, 4 February 2022 (UTC)

You are right, it was me that confused the dates. The Curtis bust was made in 1934 and would have been copyrighted if the sculptor had attached a notice to it like "© 1934 Moses Dykaar". At that time a copyright notice including the © symbol was mandatory to claim copyright in the first place, and all works without such a formal notice were not copyrighted by default. Dykaar, however, added only his name and the year of the first draft, so there was no copyright. De728631 (talk) 05:32, 5 February 2022 (UTC)

Can you check for the other busts as well Journey896 (talk) 00:13, 28 February 2022 (UTC)

I'm afraid I'm pretty busy right now with other things, so this may have to wait. De728631 (talk) 08:20, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Please can you Journey896 (talk) 18:43, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Someone else is annoyed that I asked if someone could check Journey896 (talk) 18:44, 3 March 2022 (UTC)

Your user name or IP address has been blocked.

Hi @De728631: , it looks like you blocked a large range of IP addresses in Thailand. The following message I see when trying to edit something via my home internet.

"Editing and uploading from ‪2001:44C8:4400:0:0:0:0:0/38‬ was disabled by ‪De728631‬ for the following reason: Vandalism This block (ID #424854) is set to expire: 11:48, 18 May 2022."

Please check, Thank you. Pescov (talk) 08:18, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

@Pescov: Yes, unfortunately there is a large range of IPs that is being used for anonymous vandalism, and this occurred not only at Commons but cross-wiki as we call it. So I'm afraid we'd better leave these IPs blocked. If you experience problems editing Commons, please try to reconnect your internet connection so you will get another IP. Coat of arms of Paris 14th

Hello ! I saw you corrected the coat of arms of Paris 14th... You maybe saw that I have been trying to correct this just before you, but with an visual error each time !
I was asking if you could erase the multiple wrong tries that I made so as to prevent the thread from being overloaded... And I add that if you could correct the size of the stars (they are crushed and protrude from the border) it would be perfect !
Thank you ! --534296 (talk) 10:45, 20 March 2022 (UTC)

@Cyygma: Hello. Please note that I cannot suppress the upload history because we need to preserve the edit history for the free licence. Also, those trials are nothing to be ashamed of, and there is nothing wrong with a long file history as long as the current version is useable.
I will resize the stars though since they are in fact a bit large. Best regards, De728631 (talk) 16:42, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
I keep it in mind ! Thank you very much !

Thanks for uploading File:HMS Spey leaving Portsmouth 45169285.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Renewal checks...

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Historical_textbooks_or_works_in_the_US_National_Library_of_Education/bad_license

Any chance of doing Renewal checks on these? Thanks in advance. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:00, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

@ShakespeareFan00: Done. I checked the entire category, and most works were in fact not renewed. I did have to open two DRs though: Commons:Deletion requests/File:Teachers' Manual for Modern Science-Book III Our Environment- How We Use and Control It (IA teachersmanualfo00wood).pdf and Commons:Deletion requests/File:Essential Language Habits- A New Edition in Color. Book One (IA essentiallanguag00char).pdf. De728631 (talk) 16:28, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
Template:Ping:De728631 Excellent news, Can you recat and update the licenses on the unrenewed ones then (unless already performed?) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 16:40, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
I did change the licenses while reviewing the files, and I just moved the good files back to the main "Historical textbooks" category. However, when I wrote that I checked "the entire category" above, that was actually only the first subcategory. I'll get to the second part later. De728631 (talk) 16:50, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

There is also Category:Books in the Library of Congress/unchecked to examine. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 20:51, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

Wörk, wörk, wörk! As a result of my latest check, there's a new section in Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Historical textbooks or works in the US National Library of Education/bad license/1930. De728631 (talk) 15:53, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

I've tried to move around a bit in Category:National flag of Afghanistan. I admit, i'm not the best at it. Thoughts?--Trade (talk) 19:35, 5 April 2022 (UTC)

@Trade: Hello there, and thanks for your effort. This template is meant to be placed on individual file pages, but not into an entire category page. Please try to find files of the current Afghan flag (i.e. the Taleban version) and mark those with the template. De728631 (talk) 11:33, 7 April 2022 (UTC)

Flags of political parties in Ethiopia

Hi, I think we need a coherent decision about these flags. There are more flags here: Category:Flags of political parties in Ethiopia. See also VPC. What do we do about these? Thanks, Yann (talk) 12:01, 29 May 2022 (UTC)

Hi Yann. I think most of them are PD-simple except for those with an emblem. However, as with coats of arms, heraldic depictions are left to the imagination of the original artist as long as they follow the blazon. This one though, appears to be a copyvio where the logo was directly copied into a background image. What do you think? De728631 (talk) 15:56, 29 May 2022 (UTC)
Category discussion warning

Category:03-8154_(aircraft) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

John Fred Pierson

I just noticed that every document lists him as "John Fred Pierson" and not "John Fred. Pierson" and not "John Frederick Pierson" as everyone assumes. His obituary, his tombstone, every entry in the census, and his marriage record all use the same "Fred" and not "Fred.". I had the same problem with a family member "Eddie Schneider", people assumed it was short for "Edward Schneider", and would write that in news articles, and he even addresses it in a published autobiography. Do you have a free account at Familysearch? --RAN (talk) 20:13, 12 June 2022 (UTC)

@Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ): Hi there, I've been quite busy lately, so I'm responding now. Well, I think renaming the category was a good idea then. I don't have an account at Familysearch but I remember when I was looking up that one photo, I was eventually reading something about Pierson that also mentioned how everybody used to call him Fred. Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

Subcategories of Rockharz Open Air 2022

Hi, please could you stop the removing of the Rockharz Open Air 2022 category from all the subcategories I create? It is a lot of work, to undone your un-categorizing. S. Bollmann (talk) 17:33, 20 July 2022 (UTC)

@S. Bollmann: Hallo. Hi, noticed your deletion of File:HanaZagorova.jpeg.webp as copyvio. Not sure, what source was indicated, but I guess that source was this YouTube video, which is cc-by (see its complete description). Please undelete the file. Thanks. Jklamo (talk) 19:03, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

@Jklamo: Hello. Thank you for this note, but I'm afraid the image was not from that video but from Novinky.cz where I couldn't find a free licence but three different copyright notices at the bottom of the page. Maybe you could find a Creative Commons by-sa 4.0 licence for the second image there? De728631 (talk) 09:14, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Hi, if it was from Novinky.cz, I'm sorry to bother you, it was totally OK to delete it. Fortunately I already found image from that video, it is File:Hana Zagorová - Show Jana Krause (30. 5. 2014).png. Jklamo (talk) 09:41, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

history-splitting

Update request

Hello.

Can you update File:Daylight saving time in Asia.svg by coloring Iran in orange and remove Iran in File:Timezones2008G UTC+430.png, because on 21 September 2022, Iran abolished DST and will observe standard time year-round?

Source: Daylight Saving Time Ends in Iran. Livingintehran.com (21 September 2022).

About Huawei Image Deletion

I was wondering if there would be any solution to the image? I say this because I'm not so sure at the moment if it can be claimed as a derivative work of an image that is not for free use. It's Huawei official, a free way to view Huawei and user-created themes officially for Huawei devices That's why I uploaded it, because I didn't see a problem, I thought it's even better since it doesn't have much information Can you explain me? Ezequiel 449 (talk) 18:32, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

Remember that it is not a derivative work made by me, to clarify some doubts I put it that is from Huawei, as a format for theme design Ezequiel 449 (talk) 18:34, 20 October 2022 (UTC)

@Ezequiel 449: Well, it was a derivative of the software display. You are right though that you didn't create it in the first place. Anyhow, unless there is a free licence at the Huawei source page, which I couldn't find, such images are still copyrighted and non-free. De728631 (talk) 15:06, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

it is more precise to say that it is of a theme. It is not a derivative, it is official, it is unique. Ezequiel 449 (talk) 19:35, 22 October 2022 (UTC)

In the end it doesn't matter whether it is a derivative or an original image by Huawei. Unless they explicitly published it under a free licence, we cannot keep it here. De728631 (talk) 15:11, 23 October 2022 (UTC)

Updating PD-Canada/de

Hello, I see that you created the translation Template:PD-Canada/de many years ago. Could you please help with updating the point 3 in that de translation? (Unless someone else already did it before my message reaches you.) The updated English text can be seen in Template:PD-Canada/en. Thanks in advance. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:21, 10 December 2022 (UTC)

Ok, someone did it today. All is good. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:07, 11 December 2022 (UTC)
