Inactive administrators[edit]

Hi villy. According to the criteria at Commons:Administrators#Inactive admins, User:Ilyanep is inactive. A total of 6 edits, all 9 months ago. I think this user should be de-sysoped. Dbenbenn 01:13, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Commons:Administrators#Inactive admins rules about inactivity on Commons for a full year. Regarding User:Ilyanep, last edit is 24 Sep 2004. Let's talk about him on 24 Sep 2005 :) villy 08:20, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Actually, it isn't "no edits in the last year". The rule is
  1. less than 50 edits in the last year (Ilyanep has only 6 edits total, so only 6 edits between June 11, 2004 and today), and
  2. no edits in the last 6 months (Ilyanep hasn't edited for 9 months)
Ilyanep definitely satisfies these criteria, and has since March 24. (No other current admin is "inactive". I checked them all!) dbenbenn | talk 16:49, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Wikimedia Commonplace[edit]

Hi Dozenist. Welcome to the Commons! I notice you've been uploading a lot of photos. That's wonderful! I just want to point out that your work isn't done once the photo is uploaded. We need as much information as possible about each photo, including what it depicts and where and when it was taken. Also, many of your categories need to be fixed. For example, there is no Category:TN, and there never will be. You need to go through and change it to Category:Tennessee. I'm sure there are other examples. Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 16:59, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hey, it was good to get a welcome message from you. I am absolutely certain the catagories need to be fixed on some photos I uploaded last nite. I have contributed other pictures before, but they were one at a time and were done directly in the internet browser. Last nite, on the other hand, I was using a program (is it called wikimedia commonplace??) to help me upload huge bulks of pictures and, as I am sure you would know, writing a lot of text for all of them at one time can get very tiresome. I figured I can go back to fill in more information if I need to. Some catagories (for example, any of the two word catagories) I did not know how the program would interpret them. I will go back and help fix some of them, and I am sure there will be other helping me too. Other catagories, such as the one named "Changing of the Peruvian National Guards", I thought would be appropriate to be created because of the number of photos and its importance. Let me know what you think. Thanks. -dozenist 18:29, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)
I'm glad you're planning to do some work categorizing your photos! Sometimes we get people who don't bother to do that final, important step. I definitely approve of Category:Changing of the Peruvian National Guards. It would be good if you could add more information about it at the category page. dbenbenn | talk 19:06, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Original title[edit]

When you copy an image from Wikipedia, please indicate what the original title was. See Image:Anacardium occidentale.jpg for an example of how to do this. If you can find it again, please indicate where you got Image:Anacardium occidentale1.jpg. Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 00:39, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I did what you asked me to do. Is it good now? But tell me why should I state the name of the original picture. I thought that it is enough if I tell copyrights and everything that has to do with that information. --Lemmikkipuu 01:05, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Thank you! It simply allows others who see the photo here to check your work. By the way, you can sign your name by typing ~~~~. dbenbenn | talk 03:31, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Yes I have been sined it like that, but I did have in my preferences checked "raw signature" so it did not do a link to my userpage. Now I have changed it and it should work like you suggested. Lemmikkipuu 09:12, 12 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Deletion policy for images on both Commons and another Wikipedia[edit]

Asimov[edit]

Hi JoJan. Do you remember how you found Image:Isaac.Asimov01.jpg? The link you provided to the Library of Congress doesn't work. If you could find the image again and provide more information, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! dbenbenn | talk 22:23, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

That's the trouble with links - they move or disappear. Luckily, I found the link again : it just had moved. Now it should be OK JoJan 14:27, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
No dice. Notice the word "temp" in your link? Anyway, I've tried searching for "Asimov" at memory.loc.gov and couldn't find anything. Could you write how you found the image, including as much information as possible about how you searched, what you clicked on, etc? Thanks a lot, dbenbenn | talk 19:36, 15 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Downloaded from Library of Congress: Prints & Photographs Online Catalog - In the search box : fill in "Isaac Asimov" and mention "match words exactly" JoJan 08:00, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)
BTW I edited your picture somewhat by brightening up your face. In case you rather have a dark face, you can always revert to a previous version. JoJan 08:09, 16 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi Mendalus, and welcome to the Commons! Please indicate at Image:Thorhild widvey.jpg where you got the image from (a URL). Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 22:53, 11 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I request a deletion for that picture. As most of the mathematicians photographs you uploaded, it is most certainly not in the Public Domain, which is not good enough for Wikipedia. Same for Image:Kiyosi Ito.jpeg, Image:Vaughan Jones.jpeg. --DaTroll 07:18, 20 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Fuzzy operator + photos with unknown status[edit]

Hi Marc, and welcome to the Commons! When you tag an image as {{GFDL}}, you need to indicate who the copyright holder is, for attribution. For example, I suggest you re-tag Image:Marc W F Meurrens Island 1994@133x177.jpg as {{GFDL-self}}. Also, is there any reason to think that Image:Lofti A Zadeh@110x160.jpeg is under the GFDL? Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 19:51, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi David,
  • I just send a mail to the 2 concerned persons to ask them their agreement. I found your mail (thru your key) and CC you @ cornell. If you didn't receive it, let me know. Let us wait a few days before removing the 2 photos?
  • I'll remove anyway (and immediately) all personal photos from the Category:Fuzzy operator but, if we get the acceptance, I suggest to leave them on the article where all images are shortly presented Fuzzy operator. The idea is that some writer, teacher, contributor, etc may want to use them when using the other (more interesting...) 3D images.
  • Btw, I am in the process of updating my uploads (both my few personal photos and my personal teaching material) as to include everywhere {{self2|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.0}} as found on your own uploads.
  • Thanks for your effort to make things running. I am new to the wiki project, so I'll try to do my best... but I may still need your advice in the future.
Regards, Marc M., Bruxelles (be) 22:53, 2005 Jun 22 (UTC)
Don't worry, I won't delete the photos, and I don't think anyone else will any time soon. Hopefully they'll agree to release the photos. Thanks for being so conscientious about sorting that out. Good luck! dbenbenn | talk 23:45, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hi my friend, please read [1] for my ideas about chess boards.

Congratulations for your transparent idea!!! Is there a template where you used it?

Image:Wikinews logo Large.png is not redundant. It is a high resolution version of the current Wikinews logo. Please remove the {{Redundant}} tag. NGerda 17:18, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Actually, if you look again, you'll find that the two are the same resolution. In general, we prefer to avoid having modifiers like "large" in image titles, since we should have only the largest version anyway. dbenbenn | talk 17:58, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Actually, if you look again, you'll find that the two are not the same resolution. The current logo is much smaller. NGerda 18:26, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Ah, I see someone replaced it :) My mistake. NGerda 19:19, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hello, and welcome to the Commons! I've listed Nichtlustig and the cartoons at that gallery for deletion. You tagged them as PD, but didn't give any justification for that. If they really are public domain, please indicate why at Commons:Deletion requests#Nichtlustig and images. Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 27 June 2005 19:33 (UTC)

Hi, I refer to your deletion request for Nichtlustig.
Yes, a justification IS GIVEN. In german, because the copyright-holder is a german SA:

After an email contact I got the reply "Diese Cartoons dürfen frei verwendet werden - Sylvia Schuster - Rechte & Lizenzen -"

If you are able to understand "Alle Grafiken, Animationen, Texte, Inhalte © Joscha Sauer", you should understand that too. It means: "All Cartoons in this mail can be used for free." and is equivalent to a PD-License. I wasn't sure at the beginning but after asking, my correspondant told me, that a copyright is NOT given on these cartoons she sent me. I hope this will fit. Greetz --Mifrank 27 June 2005 20:23 (UTC)

Image compression[edit]

How can I find and use pngrewrite? Also, how do I use jpegtran? I always tried to find ways to compress images, and I thank you for listing these programs on here. Zscout370 (sound off) 2005 June 28 01:06 (UTC)

See [3] for pngrewrite. It and jpegtran are both command line programs. At a prompt, you just type
pngrewrite input.png output.png; advpng -z4 output.png
and output.png has the compressed file. (Pngrewrite followed by advpng beats any other combination I know of. I ought to write a script to test that on a few thousand PNGs, though.)
For jpegs, you just write
jpegtran -optimize -copy all input.jpg > output.jpg
(The "-copy all" is important. Otherwise you lose your EXIF header. Also, note that sometimes the result is bigger. Why the program doesn't automatically check that is beyond me.) Let me know if any of that doesn't make sense! dbenbenn | talk 28 June 2005 03:08 (UTC)

How do you compile pngrewrite under Linux with GCC? It refuses to compile, giving me error messages. Andrew pmk 29 June 2005 01:57 (UTC)

Just do "gcc -lpng pngrewrite.c -o pngrewrite". The Makefile is broken.  :( dbenbenn | talk 29 June 2005 01:58 (UTC)

Mountain icon[edit]

JPG is the wrong format for Image:Icone montagne.jpg. It should be PNG instead. Could you re-save it (starting with your original file, not the JPG version!) and re-upload it? Then tag the JPG version with {{Delete}}. Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 30 June 2005 22:07 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. It's done ! —Pseudomoi 30 June 2005 22:35 (UTC)

Mumbai[edit]

Hi Guety, do you know what happened at Image:Mumbai Skyline.jpg?

(Warning: unlink(/mnt/wikipedia/htdocs/commons/upload/thumb/f/f1/800px-Mumbai_Skyline.jpg): Is a directory in /usr/local/apache/common-local/php-1.5/includes/Image.php on line 943)

I reverted. Try uploading it again? dbenbenn | talk 2 July 2005 21:33 (UTC)

Hi, I got the error message mentioned in the summery when I opend the image. This seems to happens when there is an error transmitting the images, opening and saving it with the Gimp usually fixes it. See [4] an early version of Image:Photo cathedral 01055 Vid na kupola Krestovozdvizhenskoj cerkvi.jpg for an example that is not displayed at all. But there is no problem with the current (your) version, so the error was probably on my side. -guety July 2, 2005 21:46 (UTC)

Multi-language Wikinews logos[edit]

Hi again, NGerda. I tagged Image:Wikinews Spanish logo.png as being redundant to Image:Wikinews-logo-es.png. We only want the largest possible images here. Also, we have a naming convention for Wikimedia logos. Image:Russian Wikinews logo.png should be Image:Wikinews-logo-ru.png. Could you re-make that Russian logo, starting with the large Image:Wikinews-logo.png? Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 3 July 2005 18:31 (UTC)

I'll re-upload a high res version; I didn't know that's what you wanted. I actually created the high res Wikinews logo, so it'll be pretty easy for me to do. One hurdle I have to overcome is replacing the current logos on the Wikinews sites with the new ones. NGerda 3 July 2005 23:14 (UTC)
I don't know how you do that. Presumably you have to get the attention of someone at the Wikinews project. dbenbenn | talk 3 July 2005 23:29 (UTC)

Codrington's email[edit]

You can now read yourself at : http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Komencanto/Codrington_permission_email . I'll have to check with him about that particular license, but it seemed to be exactly what he was saying. Cheers, --Komencanto 5 July 2005 10:17 (UTC)

Flag vectors[edit]

I read in the v.pump that flags are being converted to a vector format. Do you know who is undertaking this task? w:User:Brhaspati (currently inactive) has converted the Indian flag into code using w:MATLAB. See w:User:Brhaspati/indflag. It might be useful to anyone involved. (the HTML equivalents are sightly off colour, but it is a minor problem.) Nichalp July 4, 2005 10:37 (UTC)

SVG still isn't allowed, though it might be soon. Sodipodi.com has a good gallery of public domain SVG flags. dbenbenn | talk 4 July 2005 17:12 (UTC)

SVG[edit]

So, while other formats are being debated at Commons:Village pump#What file formats should be allowed?, can we get SVG turned on, as that seems completely un-controversial? Do you know how to get that done, or who can do it? Thanks, dbenbenn | talk 4 July 2005 18:14 (UTC)

Hi there - I agree that we should get SVG enabled as soon as possible. This can be done easily by adding svg to the $wgFileExtensions array in LocalSettings.php - if you find someone with access to the servers and a little time to spare. The only one I can seem to catch is brion, and he has a lot of other stuff to do, all related to the move to 1.5. If you feel like it, ask at #wikimedia-tech, I will too in a few days (I just asked yesterday after putting my suggestions on the village pump)
And thanks for all the good work on the commons - wherever I go, your name shows up ;) -- Duesentrieb 4 July 2005 19:03 (UTC)
I asked Brion about SVG last weekend on IRC. He said that although SVG is now "safe", the software isn't installed to render SVG as PNG. I suggested we could allow SVG uploads even though they can't render yet, but he said that would leave broken thumbnails all over the place. dbenbenn | talk 17:44, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Dan. I noticed Image:Wikimedia logo for newsletter (small).png, which you scaled down. I suggest it would be better to upload the original size version, then use a link to the automatically-generated 135px thumbnail in your CSS code. I think I'll do this tonight if you don't object. dbenbenn | talk 5 July 2005 21:47 (UTC)

I would have done that, except I can't figure out how to specify the dimensions of the image in CSS. I'd be grateful for any help you could give in that regard. — Dan | Talk 5 July 2005 23:37 (UTC)
Actually, I don't know how to make a good transparent version of the large logo. If you could upload one to Image:Wikimedia logo for newsletter.png, I'll do the CSS for you. dbenbenn | talk 6 July 2005 00:01 (UTC)
I uploaded the transparent version. — Dan | Talk 6 July 2005 15:42 (UTC)
Thanks! Why don't you give the CSS at Image:Wikimedia logo for newsletter.png a try? It doesn't work right in Internet Explorer, but Image:Wikimedia logo for newsletter (small).png isn't any better. dbenbenn | talk 6 July 2005 15:48 (UTC)

I think it can be PD, because I drew it by my self based upon a similar official logo on a letterhead. I didn't put it unter CC, because this are just a few paths filled with a color. --Caterham 6 July 2005 09:05 (UTC)

Although you drew it yourself, you didn't make the design yourself. The design is what's copyrighted. Similarly, you could't upload a drawing you made of Mickey Mouse. dbenbenn | talk 6 July 2005 13:23 (UTC)
The question starts at the point if the logo itself is potected by the German Urheberrecht (copyright). The Urheberrecht applies, if a so called "Schöpfungshöhe" (creative worth) is reached. This should not be the case for logos like de:Bild:Kralle.png or de:Bild:ARD Corporate Design-duet!.jpg. I can't see any higher creative level for the logo of Siegen University. --Caterham 6 July 2005 14:53 (UTC)
I think both those logos at DE are copyrightable. But I could be wrong. You might consider asking for more opinions at the Commons:Village pump (or the Commons:Forum in German). dbenbenn | talk 6 July 2005 15:30 (UTC)

Image with same name on commons and wikipedia[edit]

Recently I tried to include an image from the commons into an article for the pt.wikipedia, but there was already a different picture there with the same name, which was called instead. Is there any code I can use so that the image is called from the commons and not the local image bank? Thanks Salvadorjo 15:27, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

No, there isn't. You have to upload one of the images with a different title. dbenbenn | talk 17:12, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions[edit]

I see that you deleted Boston 1871 H. F. Walling & Orm Gray 25% and Boston 1871 H. F. Walling & Orm Gray 50% about a month ago. I made these because the image is rather large, large enough to be a bandwidth or memory problem, and the full detail is not necessary for all applications. I have recreated them. --SPUI 19:12, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree about the bandwidth concern, but you don't need separate pages for that. For example, anywhere you'd use the link
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Boston_1871_H._F._Walling_&_Orm_Gray_25%
you could link directly to the 25% thumbnail instead, with
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/de/Boston_1871_H._F._Walling_&_Orm_Gray.jpg/2138px-Boston_1871_H._F._Walling_&_Orm_Gray.jpg
Do you agree? dbenbenn | talk 00:22, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Does the software keep those around indefinitely? It seems they'd be deleted if they're not embedded on any pages. --SPUI 18:53, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, thumbnails are kept forever. I guess the extra disk space is cheaper than the processing power it would take to identify unused thumbnails.dbenbenn | talk 19:00, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. The page still has to be created in the first place (if only through preview), and using the separate pages makes it easier to get to the full size image. --SPUI 01:08, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Flag template[edit]

Does this template, which you did, http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:PD-Flag&oldid=264894, apply now or does the old one? If it does, I would try to revert it and explain what is going on. Thanks. Zscout370 (sound off) 05:08, 2005 July 12 (UTC)

Well, the two versions say basically the same thing. The current version of Template:PD-Flag is simply more verbose. Naturally I think my version is better. dbenbenn | talk 13:25, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sudoku[edit]

Please do not remove copyvio tags from images that were stolen from other websites. Particularly when there is still an ongoing discussion about the status of the image. This puzzle is someone elses creative work and that person hasn't given you permission to use it. If you want to have a sudoku puzzle on your site, then the honest thing to do would be to make your own. MattKingston 06:06, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Image:Sudoku.gif was nominated for deletion already. If you disagree with the result of that discussion, feel free to bring it up at the Village pump, for example. dbenbenn | talk 15:45, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'd like to see some consensus for having only one image per flag. Is there somewhere? Not in my knowledge. Now it seems to me that you just like to have one image/file and refusing idea that there can be different verions of same "object".

Our earlier talks about this have been died out (see Image talk:Germany flag 300.png, Image talk:LocationIndia.png as well your talk page) If you strongly opinioned to have only one file per "object" then please start voting etc. instead of overwriting other's work. It's not personal about this Hawaii flag, it's just I want see general agreement behind your activity, as oppose your approach, there are good reasons to have different size for using different purposes. Regards, --TarmoK 07:34, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've replied at Image talk:384px-Hawaii state flag.png. You're right that general agreement is important; if this issue is being discussed anywhere, please let me know. Commons:Village pump#Disallow images that start with 600px- was somewhat relevant; 3 people expressed agreement with my opinion, and no one disagreed. dbenbenn | talk 16:10, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I left answers to both.
Village Pump is nice place, but how many really has the energy and time to keep all the time eye on it? There messages there, and also in other talk pages unfortunately "disappear" in the huge amount of activities happening here. I may be wrong, but as much i know here is no "projects", similar to Wikipedia, where this kind of issues can be centrally discussed and voted.
About the 3 people answered, unfortunately in my opinion these were just personal opinions, not based in some experience or skills of image handling etc. (outside commons), as well there was no talk about (clear) separation of different type of images, flags/maps vs photos which should in my opinion handled separately. --TarmoK 08:04, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

For the english help in The Village pump, about "user graphics" capacity. We really need good names before to expand this idea. Thanks ;] ~ Yug talk 00:11, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the protection. I've since updated the English Wikipedia Main page so protection is no longer neccesary. (MacGyverMagic) - 131.211.210.15 09:51, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Maps as SVG[edit]

Hi - I just saw your comment on the village pump about making maps. That would be great, good maps are always needed! Please remember to keep any vector files you created, best as SVG - they are very useful to others who want to change/translate your maps, and we will (hopefully) soon be able to upload and display SVG directly. Thanks! -- Duesentrieb 15:23, 14 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, I know that we don't have SVG just because it has not been set up. We need to get someone to install the required software (SodiPodi or Inkscape) on the servers - that's all. But the onlyone I can get hold of seems to be brion, who is very buisy with a lot of things... -- Duesentrieb 10:32, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

COM:FPC[edit]

Hi Dbenbenn, you reverted the edits of user:Aleksis Q. Kivi at COM:FPC this morning. Why did you do that? In my opinion, the nomination of Image:Norway in satellite image.JPG was legitimate. Regards, norro 11:11, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Aleksis copied Image:M&M's Spender.JPG to a hoax title. He nominated it as a featured picture, and in the same edit opposed it. And that user has only 3 edits. It looks to me like some Commons user was just having a little fun on Friday night. dbenbenn | talk 15:42, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Incomplete license[edit]

Hi Quadell. Who is the photographer of Image:Legs constained Iyengaar Yoga.jpg? Who has to be attributed? I've tagged it {{Incomplete license}} for now. dbenbenn | talk 22:46, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I took this photo. Is it required (by Wikimedia, or by the GFDL or cc-by-sa-2.0 license) that I explicitly say that I took it? If so, the upload page should say to include that information. Quadell (talk) 13:11, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Well, GFDL requires attribution, so we have to know who to attribute. And Special:Upload says "Provide detailed information in the summary field, including the subject of the image and the source of the file." Perhaps MediaWiki:Uploadtext could be improved. dbenbenn | talk 15:42, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
