Could you check with author of File:Autógrafo de livvro.jpg about this file. It seems to me he is trying to rename a file by filing a DR. He seems to need help but writes only in PT. --Jarekt (talk) 17:05, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
- Hi Jarekt, I believe it is as you say, and already renamed the file and left a message on his discussion. Thank you for the warning. -- Darwin Ahoy! 19:14, 30 November 2015 (UTC)
Hello. Could you clarify the request? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 09:37, 3 December 2015 (UTC)
- Hello Zhuyifei1999, I wanted to propose the inclusion of that website into the whitelist, in order that images could be directly copied from there while using the basic upload interface. I believe that's a new thing that was implemented here, as I can't remember it from the last time I uploaded files. Is it clearer now?-- Darwin Ahoy! 09:57, 3 December 2015 (UTC)

Pinus pinea in Spain[edit]
You are removing category:Pinus pinea (cultivated) from individual pines and adding to the whole category Pinus pinea in Spain. That's wrong, since Pinus pinea is native of some parts of Spain and therefore not all Pinus pinea there are cultivated. Furhtermore, you are adding redundantly the Spain category. Please revert.--Pere prlpz (talk) 00:12, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
And the same goes for France and Italy, at least.--Pere prlpz (talk) 00:15, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
- And also for Portugal, certainly. But all those categories were already inside "cultivated". I created the category "Pinus pinea in Spain" and placed it there in "cultivated", where the others already were, and all the files I added there were previously inside the category "Pinus pinea (cultivated)", so it's impossible that I've moved something that wasn't already wrongly classified. At best, it needs to be improved by further creating the category "pinus pinea (cultivated) in Spain". If you know which are cultivated and which are native, and you feel the need for that category, please go ahead and do it.-- Darwin Ahoy! 00:19, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
- According to Commons:Categories#For_more_appropriate_categorization: "Pages (including category pages) are categorized according to their subject, and not to their contents, because the contents are generally not a permanent feature of the category page." The fact that now there weren't any cultivated image of Pinus pinea in a country's category is just about content, not about category subject, which also includes all wild Pinus pinea in the same country. Therefore, your changes are wrong, although creating categories like "Pinus pinea in Portugal (cultivated)" may be right and useful.--Pere prlpz (talk) 00:28, 4 December 2015 (UTC)
- Look, I only moved files that were already inside "pinus pinea (cultivated)", so I really don't know what you are speaking about, bring in the subject of the wild specimens. -- Darwin Ahoy! 00:30, 4 December 2015 (UTC)

-- Darwin Ahoy! 21:47, 19 December 2015 (UTC)

"Altarpieces" vs. "Altar pieces"[edit]
I agree that the former is preferable, but then rather than just change the parent category on, say Category:Altar pieces in the United States I would think you would move it, as well. - Jmabel ! talk
- Hi Jmabel, there are zillions of child categories named "Altar pieces", I can't rename them all, at least in a short time. And most of the items inside do not refer to "Altarpieces", but to reredos. It was - and still is - a huge mess here between altarpieces, reredos and "retablos", all meaning precise different things, but being used interchangeably without any logic, the mess extending to (or emanating from) a number of different wikipedias. I consulted with a national expert on ecclesiastic history, and she said the authority for the ecclesiastic definitions was the Thesaurus, a very expensive book of which, thankfully, there is a version online at http://151.13.7.25/thesaurus/home/index.jsp which clarifies a lot of things. Anyway, worst than it was, its impossible to get, and now at least the top categories are correctly named and placed. The others will be corrected as time permits, by me or anyone else... All the best, -- Darwin Ahoy! 20:42, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
- For an uncontroversial renaming of a category, User:CommonsDelinker/commands (or, if you are not an admin, User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands) is pretty quick; you'd mostly just need to make the list of categories to be renamed. Reredos and retablo are more specific than altarpiece, and I agree that it would be nice to subcat them where possible, but there is nothing wrong with calling them altarpieces. - Jmabel ! talk 00:08, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
- No, no, reredos is not a specific type of altarpieces. At best, the opposite could be true. Reredos means the frame or architectural structure behind the altar, generally providing a context for the altarpieces. In sensu lato it means everything behind the altar, which could be a single altarpiece or statue or an extremely elaborated and complex architectonic structure. Check the definition here. Retablos is the Spanish word for reredos, meaning precisely retro tablum, whatever is behind the table, the altar. That word is used across the countries which languages derived mostly from Latin. In English, however, and specifically in Wiki-en, it is not used with the Spanish definition, but with a different one only used in Latin America for a specific type of folk art which derived from the true reredos, but are not reredos anymore. What seems to have went wrong here is that at eons ago someone assumed that retable ou reredos is the same as altarpiece, which is wrong and nonsense, but unfortunately was replicated ad eternum through the child categories. Recently, apparently, more knowledgeable people began using and creating the Reredos category, creating a third level of confusion, adding to the "altar pieces" and retablos. It was that mess that I attempted to resolve using the proper definitions from an authoritative source, which were actually, in general, what already was in the wiki-en definitions. The problem now is the Spanish and French regions and divisions, which have hundreds of categories named "altar piece", while the contents of them are actually reredos, not altarpieces at all. That's a huge mess to resolve, but that thing can be done by a bot, and I don't plan to lose more time doing it manually. I've already gone through all the non-obvious cases, what remains can be easily automatized.-- Darwin Ahoy! 10:43, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Imagens Wiki[edit]
Meloaraujo (talk) 00:34, 23 December 2015 (UTC)

- Internet Explorer 8 will no longer have JavaScript support. You will still be able to browse and edit Wikipedia if you use Internet Explorer 8, but will not be able to use some features. This can be solved by upgrading to a newer version or switching to a different browser. [7][8]
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 12 January at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [9]
- The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [10][11]
- There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [12][13]
- The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

Recent changes
- You will be able to find or mark bugs and suggestions in Phabricator that are specific for your language or wiki. [14]
- Notifications have been upgraded with more detailed and easier-to-access information. See the documentation. Cross-wiki notifications will be available soon on the two test wikis. [15]
Changes this week
- The visual editor uses the TemplateData extension to make editing templates easier. You will now get a warning when you edit a TemplateData form and leave it without saving. [16]
- MediaWiki will get a new authentication and authorization system called AuthManager. This is planned to happen in a month or two. Some bots will need to change how they log in. Two new and more stable authentication methods will be available now: Owner-only OAuth credentials and bot passwords. You can read more about the change. [17]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 January. It will be on all Wikipedias from 21 January (calendar).

Recent changes
- You can now follow when pages are added or removed from a category on German Wikipedia. The plan is to add it to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedias this week. [18][19]
- Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [20]
Changes this week
- You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [21]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 26 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 27 January. It will be on all wikis from 28 January (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 26 January at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [22]
- The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [23]
- Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [24]

Copyright status: File:Netmadeira Webcam Faial - 2013-06-29 15-20.png[edit]
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Netmadeira Webcam Faial - 2013-06-29 15-20.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

File tagging File:Netmadeira Webcam Faial - 2013-06-29 15-20.png[edit]
This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading File:Netmadeira Webcam Faial - 2013-06-29 15-20.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you. |

Problems
- Sites with a
wikimedia.org
address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [25] - Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [26][27]
- Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [28]
Changes this week
- The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [29]
- Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [30][31]
- The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [32]
- The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [33][34][35]
- The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [36][37]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the VisualEditor team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 2 February at 20:00 (UTC). See how to join.

Future changes
- The
rest.wikimedia.org
domain will be shut down. This is planned to happen in March. You should use/api/rest_v1/
at each individual project domain instead. [38]

Classified aqueducts in Portugal has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Good evening Mr. DarwIn
My name is Sean Hurwitz. Recently, a user created an article about me and contacted me in order to supply her with a picture. I supplied her (AmyPFiztgerald) with this picture of me which was taken by Candace Horgan (as you can see in the details). Candace gave me her permission to use it in any way I want over the net. I have that in an email which I believe you saw.
My question is, what can I do to make sure the pic gets used correctly? I've even asked candace herself to upload it, which she said she'd be happy to do. So, we created an account for her...but since it isn't verified, she can't upload anything yet. haha
We have taken the picture down for now out of respect for OTRS rules and regulations.
Help? I just want to know how to do this correctly. Amy went through a lot to get it all done, and she really wants a photo up there, as do I :-)
Please advise Your help is greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Sean Hurwitz
- Hello Sean, I apologize for taking so long to answer your request. I see Jenmedia below is also dealing with the same situation. You just have to send the permission you have from Candace Horgan to OTRS in order for the upload to be accepted here.
- As for your question - "what can I do to make sure the pic gets used correctly?" can you clarify what do you mean by "used correctly"?-- Darwin Ahoy! 17:06, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
Sean Hurwitz (under review; verification; to rectify image lic.)[edit]
Hi there, am currently checking over this new entry material and image to rectify any errors and the image licensing tag (am also verifying data/cite acceptable per bio of living person guidelines - I am not the original article writer). Was hoping you could check my recent update regarding the image lic. tag and steer me if wrong? The photographer is not a logged in Wikipedia user here; yet has released image; form / authorization has been submitted; I believe another user uploaded a duplicate image file in error subsequent to original; just trying to verify my actions (or next action). Again, am monitoring and trying to rectify (make sure all checks out) here. Again, I am not the original user/contrib who uploaded. Thank you.

File:Sean_Hurwitz_Smash_Mouth_Red_Rocks.jpg Jenmedia (talk) 10:35, 27 February 2016 (UTC)
- @Jenmedia: I apologize for taking so long to review and answer this. I see that upload needs a permission, have you sent it to OTRS already? -- Darwin Ahoy! 17:01, 7 March 2016 (UTC)
Additional submission email has been provided, sent to OTRS; one of which is referenced herein (new ticket). Just trying to confirm the status, acceptability for such and help resolve issues. There was some previous activity and history on this image including prior (or perhaps duplicate) uploads and permission correspondence... Not sure why I'm unable to view access such now. At any rate... additional email / attempt has been sent to OTRS via [Ticket#: 2016030910025467]. Any insight you can provide is appreciated. Thanks for your time.
Você poderia me ajudar? Obrigada.— Preceding unsigned comment added by BillyPilgrim2 (talk • contribs)

Recent changes
- The mobile web interface no longer suggests HiDPI thumbnails. This is to take up less bandwidth on slow or expensive connections. [62]
- The search engine on wikipedia.org has been updated. [63]
Changes this week
- Wikimedia has a new backup data center in Dallas. Because of planned work on this, you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for a short period of time on both 22 March and 24 March. This could be postponed to April 18. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. Because of a test, there will also be a couple of minutes where you can't edit the wikis on 15 March starting 07:00 UTC. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
- Administrators and other users with advanced permissions will need to have an 8-byte long passwords. This change takes place on 15 March. Users with too short passwords will be asked to change password the next time they log in. This was decided in a discussion on Meta and is because they can use tools that can hurt the wikis. [64]
- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 March. It will be on all wikis from 17 March (calendar).
- The buttons in interfaces will be simplified. Instead of white, red, green and blue buttons, in future there will only be white, red and blue ones. [65]
Meetings

Corrections
- Last week Tech News said the new MediaWiki version would come to wikis from 21 March to 23 March. The right dates were 22 March to 24 March.
