Distance road signs in Virginia[edit]

I made a subcat for those. When moving stuff out of the main signs cat, can you remember to tag them in that one if they have both a route shield and a distance sign? Thanks. Famartin (talk) 15:37, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. I've been focusing primarily on the shields, but an extra category is always better. ----DanTD (talk) 15:39, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Checker Model A11W Aerobus[edit]

I wondered why I'd added this category to Checker Model A11 and deleted it. Now I find you added it. Can we talk through the structure of the Checker categories?

Right now it looks like this:

A
Checker automobiles‎ (4 C)
► Checker Model A12‎ (1 C)
► Checker Aerobus‎ (1 C)
► Checker Marathon‎ (3 C)
► Checker Medicar‎ (1 F)
B
Checker buses‎ (1 C)
► Checker Transit Buses‎ (3 F)
C
Commonwealth Motors Corporation vehicles‎ (1 F)
T
Checker taxis‎ (7 C)
► Checker Model A4‎ (4 F)
► Checker Model A8‎ (10 F)
► Checker Model A9‎ (4 F)
► Checker Model A11‎ (72 F)
► Checker Model H‎ (4 F)
► Checker Model T‎ (5 F)
► Checker Model Y‎ (1 F)

I think I'd better put this on the Category:Checker vehicles talk page.

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. FYI, this image is mine, and I couldn't fix the license in the process of transferring the thing from Flickr. ----DanTD (talk) 00:37, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All fixed. Flickr bot has now approved page. Flickr had made things very difficult with two PD options, and we can only accept one - see User:Ronhjones/PDMreply for more info. Ronhjones  (Talk) 16:04, 6 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Checker Marathon estate cars[edit]

Should they be Checker Marathon station wagons or just Checker Marathon wagons? Your thoughts please. Eddaido (talk) 08:25, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If anything, I'd like to go with the category "Checker station wagons," and put the Marathon, Aerobus (I could swear there were sedan versions too), and any Superba station wagons we find in that category. ----DanTD (talk) 16:02, 10 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We could afford to have a category for Superba station wagons. Superba and Marathon adding together into Checker station wagons.
Aerobus. This is really an airporter. I know there will be many that will say its a stretch limousine. Is that your thinking? (if you're anxious you should be able to find a photo of an Aerobus with a sedan tail in amongst the many brochures.) Why put Aerobuses with station wagons? I think that would be a mistake. They are quite important enough to stand on their own.

Bridges on Interstate 75[edit]

I don't see a category for Bridges on Interstate 75. Can we make one similar to Category:Bridges on U.S. Route 341? Not sure what category to put it under, U.S. Highway Bridges also? --Mjrmtg (talk) 12:01, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see any categories for bridges on specific Interstate highways at all. Maybe we should consider doing that. ----DanTD (talk) 13:14, 10 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Jasper County I-95 NB Weigh Station[edit]

I took 2 shots of this area while going up I-95, do you happen to know if this was a weigh station or not? Is it ok for the category to be called Jasper County I-95 NB Weigh Station? We don't have any former weigh stations, not sure if it is a former, just closed for now, or what it is. https://www.google.com/maps/@32.2559876,-81.1016727,552m/data=!3m1!1e3 --Mjrmtg (talk) 15:46, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not entirely sure about the closing dates, but both the northbound and southbound weigh stations have been closed for a long time. As far as I know, the only one that has been open has been the northbound one in St. George. Any trucks that park there have been parked illegally, unless they're construction trucks. Do you have any pics of the southbound weigh station? ----DanTD (talk) 16:20, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
There is Google Street View of the northbound weigh station, thought that was cool. I was only able to get 1 pic of the southbound weigh station, just uploaded it. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:50, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

not an Advance Guide Sign, its an Exit Direction Sign[edit]

I think you might be confused here. The wikipedia page spells this out clearly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road_signs_in_the_United_States#Guide The signs at the interchange, with arrows, are Exit Direction signs, not Advance Guide signs. Famartin (talk) 23:35, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I thought that was still in the same class. And BTW, some of them had both. I'll fix that though. ----DanTD (talk) 01:49, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
They are all guide signs, but as implied by the name, "Advance" means they come before the exit (i.e., 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile, 1 mile, etc). So, those can stay in that cat (and I think I left the appropriate ones of mine). Famartin (talk) 01:52, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

West road signs (and other directionals)[edit]

What do you think about putting the category - West road signs on for example? (and every photo that has a directional like this sign above a road number sign) --Mjrmtg (talk) 13:29, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Briarcliff Manor[edit]

Hi Dan,

I uploaded and categorized the photos within Category:Briarcliff Manor, New York. I organized it so that general images of the village still stay in the main category, like photos of the downtown. There aren't enough of them to warrant yet another sub-cat, and some would not be findable if they're only in date categories and the like, not by their primary subject. As well, I created sub-cats to organize photos by date, but I did it for concrete dates I knew the photos were taken. I don't feel comfortable with categorizing photos with dates marked "circa 1910" in a category for 1910 photos. For those reasons, I am going to revert your changes, if that's alright. ɱ (talk) 21:07, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In principal, I get why you're doing some of them (circa 1910, 1917, etc.). But others seem pretty specific. ----DanTD (talk) 21:16, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Trust me that the archives are not in a great shape - some photos have dates written in, or estimates like c. 1917, and some I placed "c." on due to the photos accompanying a document (usually news) published on the date given. Nearly none of the 19th/20th century Briarcliff photos can be given an absolute year for when they were taken. ɱ (talk) 21:52, 7 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Geneva Erie Railroad Station[edit]

I thought the Erie passed well to the south of Geneva? Mackensen (talk) 14:35, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Is this Ohio, Illinois, or where? ----DanTD (talk) 19:45, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This one: Category:Geneva Erie Railroad Station, for New York, though I'm seeing now that you didn't actually create the category. I'm pretty sure that station was LV-only. Mackensen (talk) 19:53, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I realize that now. The most I imagined was that LV and Erie had some arrangement with one another in order to compete with New York Central Railroad. That's clearly not the case here, and this map is the evidence. ----DanTD (talk) 19:59, 8 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
