Hi. I love your photo of General George Washington in Boston, and would love to use your image to honor General Washington as my hero in a quilt. I know that you freely have granted permission for the use of your images in the past; however, I know that I need your permission in writing for the organization sponsoring the exhibit I am entering.

Thank you for your time and attention. Cathie Hoover

Hi Cathie, I am very happy that the photograph is useful to you. This image is in the public domain, and may be used for any purpose, whether commercial or nonprofit. Public Domain, authorship, templates, etc.[edit]

Hello Daderot. Thanks for your many contributions. I notice you've been putting yourself as "author" of some works of art you did not originally create (e.g. example 1, example 2, example 3). This is misleading: you should not put yourself as author, nor use the templates {{Own work}} or {{Self}} for works you did not paint, draw, or sculpt yourself. If you take a photograph of a 2 dimensional painting or photograph, you should use {{PD-Art}} if from a distance, or {{PD-Scan}} for mere flat scans. If your photograph of a work of art has unique creative elements separate from the original work (e.g. a photo of a public domain sculpture in which the camera angles, composition, etc. are distinct from the original work and thus eligible for copyright), you can use {{Licensed-PD}} or {{Licensed-PD-Art}}. Scanning and uploading in itself provides the uploader no claims to ownership, authorship, copyright, or license. Accurate identification of the artist and source is crucial to establishing public domain status, avoiding deletion discussions, as well as increasing the educational & research value of Commons: countless machines and humans across the internet mindlessly copy information from Commons and Wikipedia almost as soon as it's posted, we should do our best to get the initial information right.

Lastly, please note that, unlike many other countries, works in the United States do not automatically enter public domain 70 years after the death of the creator, as described at Commons:Licensing#Material in the public domain (and see also Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States). The date and circumstances of initial publication are critical for U.S. law. {{PD-old}} explicitly states you must also provide evidence for why the work is in the public domain in the United States. Establishing the time or place of publication for gallery paintings or 3D sculptures is admittedly difficult. If you have any specific questions, you can ask me or post to Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Cheers, and thanks again for all you've done so far. --Animalparty (talk) 02:01, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Categories of works of art[edit]

Please, please, please, when you make a separate category for a work of art do not forget to include at least the category of the author of the item. That is very important. I think it is easier for you if you cut and paste the categories from the file that has more. Thank you! --Sailko (talk) 06:58, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sailko, Thank you for your note. I've admired your work for years. Yes, I will do that. Here is how I work: first I upload all the files for a day, then I do back and fill out the categories for each. It may take me another few days to finish uploading the photographs that include Galleria Borghese, but then I will put in all the categories. with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 09:30, 5 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request to rename media for correct address[edit]

Hello! Would you please rename your photos of the B and B Chemical Building in Cambridge? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:B_and_B_Chemical_Company_building It's actually 784 Memorial Drive, not 780. (I know the NRHP listing is for 780 but the centerpiece building is 784.) Even in your photos - which are wonderful by the way - the number 784 shows above the door. I'm happy to update the two pages which link to one photo if you would please rename them. Thanks in advance!

Dinosaur State Park[edit]

Hello Daderot, thanks for uploading and sharing so many great photos! I wanted to ask your permission to use two of your photos on a book cover: “Dinosaur State Park (Rocky Hill, CT) - prints.JPG” and “Dinosaur State Park (Rocky Hill, CT) - dome.JPG” The photos would not be modified, but they would have the book title and text put on top of the images. If that usage is okay, I can use whatever attribution you prefer on the copyright page inside the book, but was planning on using this: “Dinosaur State Park (Rocky Hill, CT) - prints.JPG” (front cover) and “Dinosaur State Park (Rocky Hill, CT) - dome.JPG” (back cover) © Daderot/Wikimedia Commons CC-BY-SA-3.0/GFDL

Greetings! Please use the images in any way that you wish, with or without attribution. That said, I'm perfectly happy with your proposed attributions. I hope the book is a great success! with best wishes, Daderot (talk) 14:22, 28 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comment - You should identify the fossil as much as possible in your file description. For example, here's the first phrase in w:Heliobatis: "Heliobatis is an extinct genus of stingray". I think you should identify it as a fossil of a Heliobatis specimen and mention that it was a kind of ray. -- Ikan Kekek 04:42, 11 October 2019 (UTC)
