Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Yes Cordless Larry. I noticed after sending the message. Sorry for inconvenience (if any). I took the photo during my then visit to Pakistan. I really liked the discussion as very logical and excellent collaboration. I checked some users' pages. Many PhDs are there. I am also PhD student in Sweden. Hello Cordless Larry, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. Simon Cohen Speaker and Broadcaster .jpg - deleted

Hi Cordless Larry it seems the photo I've uploaded and licensed has been deleted, what is the reason for this? I tried looking at the 'up for deletion' discussion but I'm not sure why it was removed, as the last entry reads 'Kept: for now, leaving it with the OTRS process'. It seems from the discussion at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Simon Cohen Speaker and Broadcaster.jpg that there is confusion about whether the copyright is yours to donate, or whether it belongs to the photographer. Oldest Cat

I recently updated the oldest cats list, we celebrated my cats 21st bday this week and you removed it a few hours ago. According to rules and regulations it was posted fairly. Could you please re-add her to the list? There is not a news article to site online. Is there anotherway for citation if citation is required? I've had her since I was 7. Restoration of Monday Morning (newsletter) page

Please restore the Monday Morning (newsletter) page. You could at least have suggested changes before deletion. It has been in existence since 2006 and is the second-largest student media body in India. The previous authors might have written it in a different tone but had we been warned about it, we'd have changed it and added references. I request you to restore it and tell us what all policies were violated (I really don't think we had any major violations).
