Sorry

Sorry, I don't often come on Commons, so I saw your message on my talk only today... Thank you for your reply. Now, I have a new versions of the file, but I don't know how can I upload it instead of the file... Have a good day, Gruinc (talk) 08:00, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Gallery in Commons

Thank you for your note. I had started to use "List of mango cultivars" Gallery that you had created for me some time ago. I think this concept of Gallery in Commons would work out for me real well. I might need your help in creating the next one. Thanks. Thaumaturgist (talk) 08:21, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Copyright

Stai sbagliando: Io ho appena fotografato l'immagine, non l'ho assolutamente copiata da lì. Te lo giuro veramente.--Dr Claudio radio signal 12:23, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Ciao, Ma dove ti viene che l'ho copiata?? L'ho fotografato personalmente, mi rispondiiiiiiii??? Non è copyright, lo vuoi capire??? Ciao Dr Claudio radio signal 17:16, 30 September 2010 (UTC)
Mi ha spiegato tutto trixt, ma ricorda che io pensavo che mi cancellavi le img perché erano copiate, ma sono miei ;) Ok ti saluto e sorry, Dr Claudio radio signal 12:25, 1 October 2010 (UTC)

Duplicate

Hello!

You have deleted File:HMS Cornwall (F99) in 2010.jpg because it is the duplicate of File:US Navy 100419-N-1559J-027 The Royal Navy frigate HMS Cornwall (F99) maneuvers alongside the Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195) .jpg and then you moved File:US Navy 100419-N-1559J-027 The Royal Navy frigate HMS Cornwall (F99) maneuvers alongside the Military Sealift Command fleet replenishment oiler USNS Leroy Grumman (T-AO 195) .jpg to File:HMS Cornwall (F99) in 2010.jpg. Is it the complicated way you prefer or is there any other sense behind it, I did not notice? --High Contrast (talk) 13:59, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Normaly I chose this way only when the old file is in use. But this file was not in use? Not sure why I took this way. Maybe too lazy to create a redirect manually? ;) -- Common Good (talk) 19:08, 5 October 2010 (UTC)
I would think it would make more sense to keep the older file, even if it's less popular -- secondary files are the duplicate ones that should be universally delinked and replaced with previously existing images. Just my $0.02, though, as there is no actual standard procedure on Commons for how to pick which duplicate to keep and which to delete. LobStoR (talk) 10:31, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Re: Please use lossless cropping tools

Excuse me? Please don't leave such cryptic demands. I can only guess you are complaining about the filesize (which is kind of preposterous). I hate all of those programs...basically, I either use Paint Shop Pro or CropBot. CropBot doesn't always get it right when in lossless mode, so if you can show me how to achieve the same result with PSP, I'll gladly do it. Huntster (t @ c) 21:17, 19 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi Common, I tried the XnView program you suggested, but could not find the lossless option for JPG. I could only find it for JPG-2000, which uses a different file extension. Any suggestions? Huntster (t @ c) 04:03, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

File:Kit body rkberlin.png

Hi mate, I've added a licence to the file, as you requested, however I'm a little unsure about the situation as a whole, maybe you can help. I've fully created the file myself, its not a copy as such of anything. However, I've created it to resemble the official club kit, which I found on a picture on the teams official website. And the club kit as such would probably be copyrighted. Is the licensing I placed therefore correct? Thanks for any answer you can give, Calistemon (talk) 11:30, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the clarification! Calistemon (talk) 08:33, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

I am contacting you to discuss the block you gave me. I format the picture, and not copied from NOWHERE! I never knew this site had this image as I did. Even I put my signature on the paint. Actually, I'm disappointed and I'm thinking about quitting the Commons, 'cause I do not want to suffer more such threats. Thanks for all, OriginalKratos (talk) 10:18, 11 November 2010 (UTC)

Dupe handling

Hello!

I find it a bit strange how you handle with dupes here.

This example:

  • this file was uploaded by me in 2006 and had proper source, author and licence information
  • The Multichill-Bot uploaded the same file in a worse resolution more than 3 years later
  • you deleted the file uploaded by me (that was widely used through many Wikimedia-projects) with this reason "Deleted to make way for move"
  • as a consequence you moved the multichill-Bot-file to the "old"-place
  • as a consequence we had a file of lower image quality (lower resolution instead)

As a consequence I had to restore the old file back. Well, such things happen...
Dear collegue, why do you act like you act. If I handle dupes I just delete the file that is not used (or has less usage on other projects).
Greetings, High Contrast (talk) 23:50, 19 February 2011 (UTC)

Sorry. Pixel size is exactly the same. I simply did not noticed the slightly larger file size. -- Common Good (talk) 19:04, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
Slightly larger? The old one is around 30% larger (file size). But one question about the way you deal with dupes remain: you delete files in order to move the other ones above the old, deleted ones? Why? It is much easer to delete the file that is not used or has inferior source/author/licensing information. --High Contrast (talk) 20:41, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Not always but sometimes. Possible reasons to move a file over another file are (incomplete list):
  • higher resolution
  • better description
  • uploaded by original author
  • interest to keep the old file name
  • ...

question

You deleted File:Fireboat Alki puts on a display in 1950.jpg in favor of File:Fireboat Alki puts on a display in 1950.gif with the justification that the later image was "Tremendously higher resolution."

First, the flickrreview robot uploads the highest resolution version on flickr, when it confirms the image was properly liscensed. An unknown technical problem caused a long delay in flickrreview getting around to doing its stuff, (1) uploading the highest resolution version of the image, (2) then checking it was properly liscensed. I am concerned that your deletion will impede detecting and fixing whatever technical problem was causing the delay.

Second, it is my understanding that there are a limited variety of images where a gif is superior to a jpg. It is my understanding that if this was a line drawing then the gif would be preferable. But, this isn't a line drawing, so wouldn't the highest resolution jpg be preferable?

Given these two reason do you think this deletion should be reversed?

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 00:03, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

The file has been universally replaced by File:Fireboat Alki puts on a display in 1950.gif by CommonsDelinker. The replacement was issued by DieBuche with the following comment: Tremendously higher resolution.
I found the file in Category:Universally replaced by CommonsDelinker (speedy deletion) ca. 10 hours later.
I saw no reason to revert the already fullfilled replacement and DieBuche's decision.
-- Common Good (talk) 19:14, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
OK. I am going to assume that you are telling me that, you still see no reason to restore the image.
Would you be so kind as to respond to the point I tried to make about .jpg being preferable to .gif for an image like this?
I saw nothing on the note DieBuche left on the page indicating he or she was requesting deletion. Maybe that was the meaning of the note. If so it was far from clear.
I wrote to DieBuche that day, and DieBuche has yet to reply. Geo Swan (talk) 03:57, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
To make it clear: This was a normal speedy deleton for me. Not a question of JPG vs. GIF.
The original flickr file (http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5281/5282945657_9e4c556cc2_o.gif) is a GIF. I do not see a reason to convert this file to JPG. If there is any good reason I will of course undelete the JPG immediately. That's fine with me. -- Common Good (talk) 19:41, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
