This page is for discussion of issues related to maps for the WHO 2012 death data, Estimates for 2000–2012. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chris55 (talk • contribs) 18:42, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Initial Topics for discussion[edit]

  • Should a figure of "." or "-" be treated as "no data" (grey) or simply left blank? (There is a consistent difference between - or . and 0.0 ignored in earlier maps.) I favour the latter, leaving grey for "no report". (In 2004 it was treated as "small".)
  • There are a number of conditions where the total deaths is small. What should be the cutoff point? e.g. Diptheria is 2,600 whereas in 2004 it was 37,400 (and polio has disappeared). The number of countries reporting (total 172) is also important so I suggest the condition of total>2,000 and countries_reporting>50. This reduces the number from 150 to 121. It cuts in particular the number of deaths from mental causes which are only counted in rich countries, but also some regional diseases such as Chagas disease (local to Latin America).
  • These remaining 120 disease categories are also broken down by sex and age group giving 12 x more possible maps. It is clearly impossible to include all these, but what specific instances are interesting? e.g. there are 19 categories in which males have twice as many deaths as females and 14 in which females have twice as many as males. These include some (prostate cancer, maternal conditions etc) that are almost entirely one-sex issues. One can do similar calculations on age groups.
  • Translations. I'm not sure how these are organised in Commons. It only applies to the description in this case. The main thing is the naming of causes and the WHO pages should give a ready list of at least 6 languages.

Statistics available[edit]

This table shows the deaths/million for the different statistics in the WHO tables. The main concern is to choose appropriate colours for different gradings. The simplest way is to divide the difference between min and max uniformly with sensible rounding. But I suspect there are significant "tails" in the representation which is why I've printed this table. Perhaps the top and bottom 5 or 10% should be treated differently.

  • Take the highest single cause on the list: cardiovascular diseases. Min: 318, max: 10,233. A simple representation with 11 colors splitting by values equally would be 0-1,000, 1,000-2,000, ..., 9,000-10,000, 10,000+. If we used the 5% and 95% cutoffs you'd have <700, 700-1,300, ..., 6,000-6,700, >6,7000. The effect is to put many more countries in the top category and also give greater discrimination in the middle ranges.
An alternative which is probably easier to explain is to use deciles throughout so the bottom category would be <900 and the top would be >5,500. Chris55 (talk) 10:03, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Take the alcohol related deaths. The way other wiki maps are done (e.g. Lokal's) one would divide the range of values 0-255 into 10 equal groups so that only Russia was in the red group and France was a mid orange. What I've done is to divide 200-odd countries into 10 groups so France is also red.
That's a deliberately provocative example. It also demonstrates other issues. About 30% of countries score 0 so it jumps from light yellow to orange (there are only 8 colours in that map). Whether the stats for Muslim countries are honest I don't know but I guess that's politics too.Chris55 (talk) 08:17, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Another concern is to weed out maps which are of less importance. The final column shows an initial stab at which stats should be left out. I can easily adjust the criteria to produce different choices.

Some of the "min" entries are missing due to a problem in the script. I'll try and correct this before hand corrections to this table are made. Chris55 (talk) 22:24, 17 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This table shows total deaths by sex in '000s and shows P to include the Persons entry, F for Female only, M for Male only, P + M for conditions where there twice as many male as female deaths but there are still over 50,000 female deaths from this cause, 0-4 for neonatal conditions and - if they don't meet the criteria on the previous table. (There aren't any P + F cases.)

The totals are:

The only age group I wonder about is stats 49-53, neonatal conditions. Does it make more sense to have the numbers as "per million children age 0-4" rather than "per million people"? I’ve now put up the neonatal figures with both population bases and it makes an noticeable difference. China, India and Pakistan all move up a notch and Mexico goes down one.
The numbers are appreciably different. The range changes from 5-1,794 to 121-10,064. I suppose the conventional base is "per million live births” but I can’t get those figures. It’s not even clear to me how stillbirths are treated. Chris55 (talk) 08:45, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Stats by age[edit]

I've copied the above table for other ages, except that I've left out the lines marked "-". It's not the intention to use most of these, they're for information.

This doesn't cut out any statistics. The coverage seems appropriate. Chris55 (talk) 11:02, 13 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I've now posted five samples in the gallery. There are a couple of differences with previous graphs:
  1. The groupings are now approximately equal in population rather than number of countries. There are two countries (China and India) which usually now have categories to themselve as they each have more than 1/10 of the world population.
  2. Zero incidence (a rounded figure) is now shown in green rather than yellow. Chris55 (talk) 10:53, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
