Hello, CalvinSays!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Verifying identity/permission[edit]

Hello. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid that there is some unavoidable red tape in verifying license when copyright owners whose works have been previously published are uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. This is because Wikimedia Foundation projects are not set up in such a way that we can verify identity of account holders. In order to protect the rights of copyright holders (as well as protect the Wikimedia Foundation and our content reusers), we do need you to verify that you either are Konstantin Dimopoulos or are authorized to act as his agent in releasing copyright to his work.

The images above have been tagged that identity has not yet been verified; they will be deleted in about a week if none of the processes above are followed. The images hosted at Wikipedia have been removed pending the following of one of these processes. The ones that I removed (which are not duplicated here) are:

The simplest way to do this is to put a statement somewhere on the website acknowledging that CalvinSays and Konstantin Dimopoulos are one and the same (assuming this is so). A link to that statement placed on each image uploaded will insure that there is never any confusion about your identity and that the images are not challenged on copyright grounds. Alternatively, if you aren't one and the same, if Mr. Dimopoulos puts a statement somewhere on the website indicating that you are a designated agent permitted to license content on his behalf, that should also serve. If Mr. Dimopoulos does not wish to give you such open-ended permission, he can also list the works that he is releasing under the Creative Commons Attribution Unported license.

If he chooses to alter the website, please let me know at en:User talk:Moonriddengirl. I'll make sure that the images here are appropriately tagged so that they are not deleted and that the ones hosted on Wikipedia (save those duplicated here) are promptly restored.

Alternatively, he (you, if you are he :)) can contact the Wikimedia Foundation from an email address associated with the website and release content in that way. See Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials and especially Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Declaration of consent for all enquiries. (The address to contact is easily located at the latter page.) Any of the above options should work. The volunteer responder who addresses his email should guide him through the process if there are difficulties.

Again, I am sorry to have to bring this red tape to you, but I'm afraid that with questions of copyright we have no choice. If you have any questions about how to follow through with any of this, or if I can facilitate the verification procedure in any way, please let me know at en:User talk:Moonriddengirl.

I will be leaving you a note on your user talk page on the English Wikipedia as well.

Thanks. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 12:30, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Konstantin Dimopoulos.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.
