First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Order of St John[edit]

Hi,

Great Job making those photos of The Duke of Glouster and the Order of St John insignia. I kicked myself a while ago for not taking a photo of a man wearing the insignia and your photos really help the article. I have put the two Order of Saint John photos in a page for Venerable Order of Saint John and put them in Category:British honours system. If you have any more photos from the investure ceremony I would love to see them. Dowew 00:57, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Boven!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Wikimedia Commons POTY 2010 ineligibility

Boven, You recently voted in the 2010 Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year contest. It appears that you are ineligible to vote, likely because:

 • Your account failed the rules, as it was not registered before 1 January 2011, does not have at least 200 edits on any single Wikimedia project before 1 January 2011, is a duplicate account, or an IP address.
 • You voted multiple times in Round 2. You may vote only once in Round 2 (the Final).

Your vote has been struck and will not be counted. If this is in error or if you have any questions, please post a query at our Questions page. Béria Lima msg 21:07, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CAP seal[edit]

Hey Boven, I've got bad news. On File:Civil Air Patrol National Vice-Commander's Flag.png and the other flag, you wrote that the seal was created by the Institute of Heraldry, but the seal was actually created in 1977, from what I can tell. I believe TIOH stopped producing material for CAP in the 1950s. If you have information that says otherwise, I really need to know, otherwise those two images will have to be deleted or changed around. I'd appreciate if you could respond as soon as you can, as I've *got* to start removing these images currently credited to CAP. Thanks! Huntster (t @ c) 06:06, 22 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you on this. I don't check my commons talk page very often. I've found the following link which shows an image from World War II. The CAP emblem is clearly visible on this poster which, if memory serves correctly, was created by the federal government for the Civil Defense program that included the CAP. I'm not a copyright expert, but it seems that something as simple as a ring with words on it would be eligible for copyright protection, even if it was drawn up in the 1970s. I may be wrong, but it looks like this image might be alright after all.--Boven (talk) 18:29, 19 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your account will be renamed[edit]

20:06, 17 March 2015 (UTC)

File:Image-Marcel van Rossum and Themba Mabaso.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Please just clarify that the original author ("Jo"?) did explicitly agree to CC-BY-SA not just "for Wikipedia/for Commons". Thanks. --Nemoschool (talk) 06:39, 25 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
