I'm a bit puzzled about your change of category on the above file. As I understand it, a lantern is a raised architectural structure, whose surface is not parallel with the roof. A skylight is a glazed part of the roof which is parallel with the roof or flush with it. See this definition. Confusion has been caused by the en.Wikipedia definitions of w:Roof lantern and w:Skylight, where the two are not differentiated clearly from each other. I think that the light in the above picture is a lantern, using the contemporary terminology of that C19 building. Note that a cupola can be a lantern if it allows light through, but lanterns do not have to be cupolas or domes or round or octagonal - they just have to be a raised architectural structure which lets light in. So please could you explain why you changed the category to Skylight? Thank you. Storye book (talk) 18:50, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have just googled "roof lantern" and all the pictures are like the light in the above image file. Google search for roof lantern. Storye book (talk) 18:58, 21 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Update. As you have not yet replied, and because of the information which I have found, I shall take it that your edits were a mistake, and I shall undo them. Storye book (talk) 09:35, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Storye book: Oups, sorry, You may find the answer in en:Daylighting#Skylights
skylight = part of the roof. Framed element fitted in a roof construction ; horizontal or slightly sloping glazed panels facing the sky and providing direct daylight ; variants with two horizontal frames raised with vertical panels on the side are raised skylights ;
lantern = roof appendage. Superstructure erected on a roof or dome and rising steeply above the roof ; vertical glazed panels facing the horizon providing indirect daylight ; see → lantern ;
not to be confused : lanterns # cupolas (décorative elements, no lighting function) ;
That is the understanding in french and german. I am specialized in history of arts/architecture, in french and german, but not in english. I hope this helps. Kind regards, --Bohème21 (talk) 12:18, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your reply. I have no wish to argue with you. I think part of our problem here is that we are dealing with British 19th century architecture, which had/has its own terms, many of which were taken from older terminologies. How about we retain your use of the terms for French and German roof lights, and British use of the terms for British roof lights? Storye book (talk) 14:50, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Good morning, you are welcome. I am pleased to leave the british roof categories to you. Go ahead. Sincerely, --Bohème21 (talk) 05:44, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cone roofs[edit]

Hi Bohème, I hope you don't mind this revert, there are two reasons why I did it:

  1. Strictly technically speaking, it's not a cone, but a hexadecagonal pyramid. I believe it's not wise to put polygonal pyramids into cones, it's like putting various polygonal towers into the round towers category. It may look weird to have specific category like (for example) 32-gonal towers, but there's related material and even an article, so why not. The same can be done with roofs, i.e. opening Category:Hexadecagonal pyramid roofs.
  2. Another reason is that I tend to keep building-related categories outside of architectural elements-related categories, in other words I prefer to make Roof of [building name] or Dome of [building name], and then put it under roof-related or dome-related categories. Alternatively, I put specific files directly into Cone roofs [in Iran].

Anyway, soon I'm finish with organizing Towers in Iran and then I can focus on making roof-related categories, I know where cone roofs are. Is that fine? :) --Orijentolog (talk) 20:58, 30 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour @Orijentolog: . Thank you for your message. It is just perfect! :). I appreciate the clever explation, making me wiser ... The cones and pyramids are up to you ! Have a good time. --Bohème21 (talk) 19:57, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

HotCat moving and copying[edit]

In regards to File:Bundesarchiv B 145 Bild-F052000-0012, Bewachung von Flugzeugen durch BGS.jpg and File:Bundesarchiv Bild 102-08771, Berlin, Beinamputierter Mann.jpg

These files were moved which removed them a category that they should have remained in. Using copy instrad will just add the new category.

Please check the files affected by Moving from Category:Black and white photographs of men wearing hats to Category:Men wearing hats for in Germany. Thank you. Senator2029 03:45, 15 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour Senator2029, thanks for your message. See new Category:Black and white photographs of men wearing hats in Germany. Sincerely, --Bohème21 (talk) 09:24, 19 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cat sorting[edit]

I don't get the reason for this edit. What am I missing? - Jmabel ! talk 16:51, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Jmabel: bonjour. « |(space) » behind the file name is a way of sorting out the files showing "xy hats" in order to separate them from those showing "people in xy hats" and (remote) "crowds of people in xy hats". It places the files at the top, showing first what the category name promises : hats ! It avoids creating new sub-categories for "people with xy hats", "xy hat wearers", xy hat holders etc. You are welcome. --Bohème21 (talk) 18:30, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds almost hopeless to maintain that over time. Why not section out a "people in xy hats" category? - Jmabel ! talk 19:14, 24 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Case notes[edit]

- Bien cordialement. Siren-Com (talk) 23:22, 24 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thank you for looking for a solution to the problem encountered on the photo of the reading session table.. (I will also modify the title to correct this spelling mistake : Scéance --> Séance !), but it is the tab Add a note located below the image as seen on this File:Toulouse 1905 marché des Carmes.jpg file for example. So I'm going to pour the B&W version I have of this table (in the Illustration) and hope I can define the people. The notes line in the description is useful though and I'm surprised that its code is so complicated, it looked like it was defined in the template at first? - Best regards.

Bien cordialement - Siren-Com (talk) 01:05, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
